Craig Robinson: A Game of Character

Posted: 10:25 AM ET

Below is an excerpt from Craig Robinson’s book, “A Game of Character: A Family Journey from Chicago’s Southside to the Ivy League and Beyond”.

The idea to write this book—as a way of paying tribute to a handful of very important individuals who have shaped my understanding of basketball and of life, and who have contributed to my ongoing search for what it truly means to have character—has been percolating in the back of my mind for years.

But it wasn’t until the waning minutes before my appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Denver on Monday night, August 25, 2008, that I made the conscious decision to put pen to paper. Of course, writing a book was the last thing that I needed to be thinking about at that particular time for me and my family, not to mention in those very moments while standing backstage—where I was attempting to go through the equivalent of my pregame ritual that allows me, as a coach, to remove myself from the hubbub and become the calm within the storm for my players. But this night, for lack of a better description, was a whole other ball game!

Not that I was nervous about stepping out into the glare of history’s spotlight. On the contrary, nothing could have been more gratifying than the opportunity to speak from my heart in introducing my sister, Michelle Robinson Obama, to the thousands of incredibly energized delegates at the Convention Center and to the millions of Americans watching. The weight of the moment, rather, had everything to do with the unbelievable responsibility that had fallen to Michelle. As the headliner of the convention’s first night, my little sister, Miche, twenty months my junior, my only sibling, now wife of Senator Barack Obama—who was about to become the party’s nominee for president of the United States of America—had to deliver the speech of her life. Intended not only to welcome the delegates and help reunite the party after what everyone agreed had been the most bruising primary season in modern times, the speech also had to deliver the most important character reference for the candidate that would be given throughout the general election season to come.

Lance Armstrong dismisses Floyd Landis' doping claims

Posted: 05:20 PM ET

Seven-times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong has dismissed claims by former team mate Floyd Landis that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

Landis, who was stripped of his 2006 Tour victory after a positive test for testosterone, has confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs and accused others, including Armstrong, of doping.

"We have nothing to hide. We have nothing to run from," Armstrong, who was Landis's team leader at U.S. Postal, told reporters before crashing out of Thursday's fifth stage of the Tour of California.

"(The allegations) they're not even worth getting in to. I'm not going to waste your time or my time. I think history speaks for itself here. We've all followed this case (Landis) for the last four years."

Armstrong, who was taken to hospital after a heavy fall early in Thursday's stage, said Landis, had no credibility.

"This is a man that's been under oath several times and had a very different version," Armstrong said.

Dancing alums stunned by Lawrence Taylor's arrest

Posted: 10:08 AM ET

by Scott Huver and Reagan Alexander

Like a tackle from the blind spot, Lawrence Taylor's arrest for allegedly sleeping with an underage prostitute hit his former Dancing with the Stars cast-mates out of no where.

"It's shocking right now," said fellow Season 8 contestant Melissa Rycroft. "I danced with him. He was my buddy."

"It's not the LT that I knew," Rycroft told PEOPLE at the 17th Annual Race to Erase MS gala in Los Angeles on Friday. "The LT that I knew was very sweet and caring and compassionate and he took care of all of us and I never saw a temper. I never saw him mistreating anybody."

Rycroft said she would like to see information come out that shows LT did nothing illegal with the 16-year-old girl. "I don't know how optimistic I am about that, but I can hope."

Tony Dovolani echoed those comments at the event, calling Taylor, "such a cool guy," and opted not to make any quick judgments adding, "I don't know the details, so I can't make any comments either way. I feel for the both parties because this is not a pleasant situation to be in."
