Elton John helping Eminem through drug addiction battle

Posted: 02:06 PM ET

By Eric Ditzian via

In the run-up to the spring release of Relapse, Eminem spoke openly about the drug addictions — from Vicodin to Ambien — that had kept him from putting out a studio LP for almost five years. The rapper revealed in May that he often leaned on Elton John to help him through his difficult times, saying, "[H]e's somebody who's in the business and can identify and relate to the lifestyle and how hectic things can be."

Now the Rocket Man himself is saying that he continues to counsel his pal. In an interview with BBC Radio over the weekend, John said, "I've been helping Eminem over the last 18 months and he's doing brilliantly.

"I'm there if people want my help," continued the singer, who has battled his own addictions over the years. "If people ask for help you tell them where to go, but there's no point advising people if they don't want to do it."

In a interview last spring with Vibe magazine, Eminem admitted he almost died from a methadone overdose. He also estimated he took as many as 20 prescription pills a day, mixing and matching pain and sleep medication, before realizing he was suffering from addiction.

When he decided to get sober, he reached out to John.

How Elin Nordegren spent the holidays

Posted: 01:33 PM ET

By Peter Mikelbank via People

Ideally, the situation should have been relaxing: A New Year's Eve celebration coinciding with a birthday. Spent with family. In one of the most fashionable ski resorts in the world. At a favorite restaurant known for casual and informal dining.

Except for one mitigating factor: The guest of honor was Elin Nordegren. Mrs. Tiger Woods.

After an isolated Christmas, Nordegren surfaced in the company of her twin sister Josefine in the French Alps. The pair, along with Josefine's husband, Daniel Lönnborg, arrived last Sunday, Dec. 27, at Switzerland's Geneva Airport, according to reports, and spent a largely unobserved week with friends in a rented chalet in Les Houches, just outside the ski resort of Chamonix.

A five-man French security team, hired for the week, assured the group's privacy on the slopes.

Terror Investigation

U.S. officials say they knew as early as August of communication between extremists in Yemen and a person called "the Nigerian." Could the dots have been connected before the Christmas Day terror attempt? Would that have prevented Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab from getting on a flight to Detroit with explosive materials? Have we learned anything from 9/11? We'll ask Thomas Kean, chairman of the 9/11 commission. We'll also talk to three people who lost loved ones on 9/11.

Trouble for Charlie Sheen?

An EXCLUSIVE tonight: The lawyer for Brooke Mueller, Charlie Sheen's wife. Mueller called 911 on Christmas morning and reported her husband had a knife to her throat and was making threats. Now, she wants the restraining order against him modified so they can work things out. What's going on? We'll ask Yale Galanter, Mueller's attorney.

And we want to hear from you!

Do you think security in the U.S. has improved since 9/11?

A 'frantic' attempt to save Brittany Murphy

Posted: 01:03 PM ET

via TMZ

Brittany Murphy's husband and mother made a frantic attempt to revive her before paramedics arrived ... this according to notes written by an investigator from the L.A. County Coroner's office. And, there were a shocking number of strong prescription meds on Brittany's nightstand.

TMZ has reviewed the documents, written by Investigator Blacklock. According to his notes, Brittany Murphy "had been complaining of shortness of breath and severe abdominal pain" for 7 to 10 days prior to her death. According to the notes, Murphy went into the bathroom at around 7:30 AM Sunday and shut the door.

A half hour later Brittany's mother, Sharon Murphy, went to check on her daughter, opened the bathroom door and "discovered the decedent lying on the floor unresponsive." According to the notes, Sharon yelled for help. Brittany's husband, Simon Monjack, who was in bed, heard the screams and ran to the bathroom.

According to the notes, Sharon called 911 and Simon "attempted to revive the decedent by placing her in the shower and running the water."

The notes continue - "The decedent remained unresponsive and purged her stomach contents prior to the arrival of the paramedics."

When the paramedics arrived, Brittany was "without signs of life."

Paramedics moved Brittany from the bathroom to the master bedroom, where they found a slew of prescription drugs - "A check of the nightstands revealed large amounts of prescription medication in the decedent's name. Also noted were numerous empty prescription medication bottles in the decedent's husband's name, the decedent's mother's name and unidentified third party names."

According to the notes, the medications included Topamax (anti-seizure meds also to prevent migraines), Methylprednisolone (anti-inflammatory), Fluoxetine (depression med), Klonopin (anxiety med), Carbamazepine (treats Diabetic symptoms and is also a bipolar med), Ativan (anxiety med), Vicoprofen (pain reliever), Propranolol (hypertension, used to prevent heart attacks), Biaxin (antibiotic), Hydrocodone (pain med) and miscellaneous vitamins.

'Family Ties' mom: 'Yes, I'm a lesbian'

Posted: 02:30 PM ET

(CNN) - "Family Ties" actress Meredith Baxter made the media rounds Wednesday confirming the rumors that she is a lesbian.

"It was a later in life recognition," the actress explained to Matt Lauer on the "Today" show Wednesday.

The National Enquirer recently ran a story about Baxter being spotted on a lesbian cruise through the Caribbean with a "female friend," which was then picked up by celebrity blogs. As a result, the 62-year-old decided to tell her fans herself.

"I didn't want some tabloid to take the story and make it up," Baxter said in the interview. "I wanted it to be in my own words."

Baxter was also interviewed on Sirius XM Radio's "The Frank DeCaro Show."

Coming out was a difficult thing for the quiet actress to do. She told Lauer on "Today" that she's always "lived a very private life. To come out and disclose stuff is very antithetical" to who she is.

Chelsea Clinton Engaged to Longtime Beau

Posted: 02:27 PM ET

By Michael Y. Park and Sharon Cotliar

It'll be a first-family wedding for former first daughter Chelsea Clinton. The daughter of President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Marc Mezvinsky, it has been confirmed to PEOPLE.

Clinton, 29, of course, is the former first couple's only child. Mezvinsky, a banker and fellow Stanford alumnus, is the 31-year-old son of former Iowa congressman Ed Mezvinsky and former Pennsylvania congresswoman Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinksy. The two became engaged on Thanksgiving, which they spent in New York.

On Friday, the pair sent out an e-mail to friends and family, saying: "We're sorry for the mass email but we wanted to wish everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving! We also wanted to share that we are engaged! We didn't get married this past summer despite the stories to the contrary, but we are looking toward next summer and hope you all will be there to celebrate with us. Happy Holidays! Chelsea & Marc."

Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie To Design Jewelry

Posted: 01:43 PM ET

via Us Weekly

58559023Add jewelry design to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's resume. The two have completed a limited edition collection of gold jewelry and silver accessories called The Protector — which is inspired by the snake  - for high-end jeweler Asprey.

Women's Wear Daily reports that Pitt, 45, and Jolie, 34, have been working on the project for more than a year and that their pieces will go on sale at Asprey stores in London, New York, Beverly Hills, Tokyo and Dubai this week.

Prices start at $525 for a silver baby spoon with a curving, serpent-shaped handle. Other items in the collection: Silver baby gifts such as the spoon, an eggcup, tooth box and picture frame, as well as pendants and rings made from gold and micropavé diamonds, all featuring curving snakes.

Why the snake theme? According to WWD, Jolie was given a ring (not from Asprey) in the shape of a snake while pregnant with Shiloh and considers the reptile a protector of her family. Proceeds go to Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, which Jolie co-founded in 2006. The organization raises awareness and funds to educate child victims of war, conflict and natural disasters.

The organization raises awareness and funds to educate child victims of war, conflict and natural disasters. Jolie declined to talk about their collection, but said in a statement: "These are the children who most need a safe place to learn, a place to heal, a place to learn reconciliation, a place to build a better future and a place — to just be children. Yet the education for these children is often forgotten. Tens of millions of children and adolescents in conflict are not in school."

It isn't Pitt's first time designing. In 1996, after getting engaged to Gwyneth Paltrow, he gave her a simple diamond ring that he designed with the help of Italian jeweler Damiani. After wedding Jennifer Aniston in 2000, he collaborated with Damiani to design the wedding bands.

Kayne West is NOT dead

Posted: 04:09 PM ET

By Brian Orloff via

Kanye West has gotten some bad press lately, but even this was too much for those closest to him.

art_kanye_west_giContrary to reports that spread online Tuesday, the outspoken rapper is not dead. West instead was the victim a hoax that began on a fraudulent Web site that resembled a Fox News story reporting that he had died in a "bizarre car crash in Los Angeles."

The site has been taken down – but not before West's model-girlfriend Amber Rose responded on her Twitter page, stating that the rumor of his death was "NOT TRUE." The rumor was especially popular on Twitter, and "RIP Kanye West" actually became a trending topic at one point. Wrote Rose: "This 'RIP Kanye West' topic is not funny. He has people like myself and his family that love him very much."

One possible reason for the hoax?

On Sunday, West released an 11-minute film We Were Once in a Fairytale on his blog directed by Spike Jonze which parodied his obnoxious public persona and showed him drunk in a nightclub while his song "See You in My Nightmares" played. At the end of the clip, West stabbed himself, revealing a demon living inside.
