Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston have patched things up, and may hear wedding bells chiming. But it's going to take a whole lot more for Bristol's mother, Sarah Palin, to forgive her daughter's boyfriend.
"With her, his actions will have to speak louder than words," Bristol, 19, tells PEOPLE. "And he'll have to get his education and a job and be willing to support Tripp the right way. And then I think she'll come around." What does she mean by "the right way" to raise their 18-month-old son? "Like, not just have him around when the cameras are around but be there all the time and have a legitimate job and be supportive financially and just set a good example for him," says Bristol. According to Bristol, Johnston is really changing. "Tons and tons of progress is being made," she says. "Like, he'll change a diaper without me even having to tell him, or he'll take him when I need a 15-minute break, or he'll come over and help with Tripp, and all that stuff is just so much appreciated." Bristol Palin, Levi Johnston Are Engaged!Posted: 11:48 AM ET
Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston reveal exclusively in the new US Weekly that they are getting married. And, they tell US Weekly, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been kept in the dark about their plans ... until now. "We got engaged two weeks ago," Bristol, 19, tells US Weekly. "It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents." Bristol and Levi, 20 - who famously called off their previous engagement two weeks after welcoming son Tripp in December 2008 - tell US Weekly they reconnected three months ago while working out a custody plan for their 18-month-old son. "I really thought we were over," Levi tells US Weekly. "So when I went, I had no hope. I think we both just started talking — and then we took Tripp for a walk." Says Bristol, "When he left that night, we didn’t hug or kiss, but I was thinking how different it was. He texted me: 'I miss you. I love you. I want to be with you again' ... I was in shock." Now comes the hard part: Getting the blessing of Sarah Palin, who has made no secret of her feelings for Levi. He provoked her fury last fall when he claimed that she had called her infant son Trig (who has Down syndrome) "retarded." She fired back, telling reporters that anyone who posed for Playgirl would "say and do anything for even more attention." Later, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she dubbed him "Ricky Hollywood" and called his "aspiring porn" career "heartbreaking." Says Bristol, "It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board." The Palins released a statement on the Today how Wednesday morning: "Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what's best for our children. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives." As a single mom to baby Tripp and the new owner of her own Anchorage condo, Bristol Palin has become domestic. But when the 19-year-old mentions "dirty laundry," what she's referring to is her past with Tripp's father, Levi Johnston. "He is a stranger to me," Palin tells Harper's Bazaar for its June/July issue about her former fiancé – whose public behavior, including posing for Playgirl, she claims to ignore. For now, there is only one man in Palin's life: 17-month-old Tripp. Still, the young mom does express hope about finding a partner, saying, "One day I will find a nice guy." Recalling the painful confession about her condition to her parents in the middle of the 2008 presidential campaign, the teen says, "I remember sitting on the couch with one of my best friends and Levi, and I just couldn't spit it out. I was like, 'Mom, Mom.' I was bawling my eyes out. She was like, 'What’s wrong?' And I was like, 'I'm pregnant.' And she was like … Oh my God. Holy crap." Filed under: Bristol Palin |
