Report: Tape captures Gibson threat

Posted: 09:00 PM ET

(CNN) - A new audio recording released online Monday purportedly captures another profanity-laced argument between actor Mel Gibson and former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, in which he threatens her life and verbally abuses her.

RadarOnline released the audio on its website Monday - the second such recording since another tirade was posted Friday. The site claims the male voice is that of the 54-year-old Gibson. CNN has not independently confirmed the authenticity of the recording.

In the audio released Monday, the man on the recording can be heard repeatedly using sexual slurs and profane insults as he grows increasingly enraged throughout the phone conversation.

At one point, the man says, "What, what are you threatening me?" after the woman tells him he is "going to answer" for an alleged physical assault against her in which her teeth were broken.

"I'll threaten," the man says. "I'll put you in the f***ing rose garden."

The man also says of the alleged assault: "You got what you f***ing deserved."

I tried to listen to this recording and it was frightening. I had to shut it off. There really isn't a situation where I would get as angry as Mel Gibson seems in that tape. He is screaming at the top of his lungs. I hope he gets some help.

onlylogic   July 12th, 2010 10:01 pm ET

Where is the help for Americans? We are on our knees. Why do you not talk about America?

flex   July 12th, 2010 10:51 pm ET

I say there are 2 sides to this story, maybe this woman is a real .....maybe she is using him, maybe a gold digger & he is just pissed off like any person would be! maybe he has every right to call her names..she is probably taking advantage of him! so i side with mel...

Cajazz76:24:8   July 13th, 2010 1:08 am ET

If his recorded tirades aren't terroristic threats I don't have a clue what the meaning applies to and where the law draws the line. At least his feed bag is not going to be filled any time soon.

Lee   July 13th, 2010 5:01 am ET

It amazes me how quickly we look at an attractive woman and go "Oh poor her" It amazes me more that we will crucify a person in the media and then say "It might be him" This 'innocent victim' is boo hoo'ing to the press and she is getting you to feed out of her hands. Who is she really and who knows her personally. Fact: people can drive each other insane.. Anybody who would get a person so angry.. be it Mel or not.. I have to wonder what part she played to cause it. No fight is one sided and I seriously doubt she is innocent. I do not condone domestic violence, however I refuse to judge and hang a person without knowing all the facts and will tilt my hat to our judicial system. I am sure many of your viewers have said worse things than this in the privacy of their homes or on an answering machine. As for the missing teeth... Where is the conviction? Please let it play out in court before giving Mel his walking papers.

Jacquelyn   July 13th, 2010 8:08 am ET

You know what, yes Mel was wrong but so was she. If you tape someone you know you will use it in some kind of way in the near future. She wanted him recorded so she can get a big payday. Especially since it was reveal she signed away her rights to his fortune. Sure she could have been scared, but really who asks for money instead of a situation like this instead of justice?

Kathie   July 13th, 2010 10:20 am ET

Mel Gibson is one sick man and his rants have no place in civilized society. His true colors have come out. He is a threat to the health and safety of those around him. I have destroyed any DVD I had that he was in (lethal weapon, braveheart, etc) and will never waste a dime to see any movie he might be in. No wonder he has been dropped by his agency–he's toxic! If he was not a celebrity he would already be in jail!

John H   July 13th, 2010 11:39 am ET

I agree with flex that there are usually two sides to every story although I don't approve of the profanity and uncontrolled anger. Have to wonder what she may have said or done to get Mr. Gibson to go off like that.

@ Cajazz76:24:8....Sorry to burst your bubble Cajazz but Mel Gibson is wealthy in his own right and has the money to produce his own movies. While I don't approve of his tirade, I will not boycott his films. He is a very talented artist and I will continue to enjoy his movies. I might just point out the Alec Baldwin had a similar episode and he can still be seen of television and movie screens.

To Mr. Baldwin. Please seek professional help. I don't want to lose your talent. We were soldiers once, and Young!

Sid   July 13th, 2010 11:44 am ET

Yes on the tapes of Mel voice we do not not even know if it is him yet but not for nothing it may be possible just maybe that she is trying to push his buttons so she can set him up for extortion thought has not been addressed at all or thrown out there & for all we know he probily realize now he really screwed up getting mixed up with hin the 1st place..ecspecially if she already knew he had anger issue & had been in trouble with sobriety i racist remarks i do not trust her iether i am not saying he is an Angel by no means cause but something does not mesh with me ... he was married for almost 3 decades & never heard of such a thing about him abusing his x wife or his other children only had mouth & at times did not monitor to wel be fore he spoe & had a drinking problem now all this crap!...My gut is telling me that she is playin these things unfortunately that happen to him & staging this whole thing so lets not judge till we get the whole truth & his side of the story i am still willing to keep an open mind until facts & the whole story is told from both sides but i do strongly believe she isused him & its just a possiblitie she stage for her own gain & some were along the line she could be taken advantage of that fact!!!! If he is guilty shame on him & deserves whats coming & hope he gets the help he needs & i apoligize to his x girlfriend Oksanna but i do not feel she is on the up & up iether !!!!!!!! Sid

John H   July 13th, 2010 11:44 am ET

Sorry! Correction to my last sentence. To Mr. Gibson not to Mr. Baldwin.

LE   July 13th, 2010 11:58 am ET

Most of us don't know what we are until we are angry, he learned that he was racist and sexist.

Lauren   July 13th, 2010 12:30 pm ET

Mel Gibson needs to get into rehab or some other serious help. His drunken tirades have got to stop. This woman entered into a relationship with him ignoring the fact that he is a serious alcoholic. A fiesty Russian temper is not a good mix with an alcoholic temper, and no excuses for Mel, but she was shameless in releasing that tape. To tape that to begin with proves that she was gathering evidence for someone, but it should have stayed with the authorities. Mel may have met his match and I hope it forces him to join AA and give up the bottle for good.

Susan   July 13th, 2010 12:41 pm ET

She probably had some part in it and probably has before. But he is out of control and a madman for (AT THE VERY LEAST) the second time. He's going down.

James   July 13th, 2010 2:06 pm ET

Mel obviously needs some anger management help. And this woman needs to address her passive aggressive behavior. Both need help.

Quincy G   July 13th, 2010 2:26 pm ET

Sure, there may be 2 sides to this story but, what kind of person would terrorize and humiliate another human being the way Mel Gibson has? There is no excuse for this and a resonable person would simply walk away form this type of confrontation. Maybe she baited him. We'll never know, but my point is 2 wrongs don't make a right! Mel needs an intervention and serious therapy. His ex wife has remained silent but I wonder what she went through in that marriage. They had a very large family and were devout catholics, but we'll never know what went on between them unless Robin speaks out publicly . The fact is Mel & Robin had according to reports been living apart for 2 years although the entire family attended Mel's church as a united family unit faithfully every Sunday. He had already hooked up with Oksanna before his wife filed for legal separation. Let's not forget That Mels' own father denied that the halocaust happened. I'm sure that a lot of Mel's background has impacted th man he is today. I'm not excusing his behaviour. I think he needs therapy at this point in his life more than he needs a career.

Maria   July 13th, 2010 4:16 pm ET

His comments were wrong. His actions were wrong. Mel should be excommunicated from Hollywood Society since this is not his first such incident. The line has to be drawn somewhere. People need to understand that even if you have MORE money than God, it does not give you the right to ACT out however you wish. He should still be held to the same societal standards as the rest of us ... certain things just AIN'T done – period. As for her, she was wrong in recording these conversations. I feel that she was defintely leading him on, saying certain things that she knew would provoke him to ACT A FOOL and say what he did. Blackmail or leverage, it just seems dirty. She knew what he was going in and he knew what she was going in. What did he expect from a woman who would carry on an affair with a married man? What did she expect from a man that would carry on an affair behind and in front of his wife? They DESERVE each other. The physical abuse is UNACCEPTABLE. I have been abused in the past, and that's NEVER acceptable.

Indie   July 13th, 2010 4:25 pm ET

Mel's girlfriend is a professional at this game.
The alleged tapes sounds like she set him up (if indeed it is him.) If true he might be able to sue her.
Mel Gibson is not a racist person, I like Mel Gibson as an actor and Mel has contributed many excellent and memorable movies.

Mel Gibson needs to get help with his drinking. If he gets that under control, he'll at least be able to keep his anger under control as well.

Joe G. (Illinois)   July 13th, 2010 4:39 pm ET

How far would the average woman go if she had a shot at truckloads after truckloads of money? Not to mention getting out it with “Oh.. That poor woman?!”

Amanda Roche   July 13th, 2010 4:44 pm ET

Okay, Larry, I understand that Mel Gibson’s verbal attack has a lot to say about the man as the bigot, but he is not the only actor who has a propensity for violence. If you are willing to report about him, why not mention other Hollywood actors and other famous people with the same propensities. Why not make your talk show about famous Hollywood people who are no different from the common lot of people, with the propensity for violence and criminal behavior. One is example is Charley Chin, I believe that’s how the name is spelled? After all, people should not forget that famous people can be just as dangerous and criminally inclined as the regular Joe-Do?

Ceciliana   July 13th, 2010 4:58 pm ET

Why are we so judgmental when it comes to celebrities? I don't see Mel Gibson movies because I approve of his choices. He"s a good performer as is Alec Baldwin, Michael Jackson, Chris Brown or any of the other superstars we love to look down on. They are people who screw up and make mistakes just like us. If you don't like them, quit buying their movies or music.

Plagiarism is Immoral   July 13th, 2010 4:59 pm ET

@John H

It's okay to pop my bubble. I need to escape once in a while. Yes, many will continue to watch his reruns and future films, but many are walking away from him that are necessary to garner market share to be profitable in that industry. He assailed Jews that, part and parcel, offend all in that faith and Jews have a lot of influence in Hollywood and across this nation in the distribution of film.

I would think that most women would take a strong and protracted evaluation of him before they would take a second look in his direction. Of course, money talks and bull poo walks.

My biggest concern was why law enforcement, having recordings of his tirades, did not act more responsibly...There is alcohol and behavior modification programs that can help him and I am sure, if he changed for the better that most would put it behind them.

Also, I would not be so vain to say I wouldn't watch a new release of his. I like the advice to gave to smart Alec Baldwin, but why not direct it to mellow Mel Gibson at the same opportunity availed yourself? Just curious and tossing the ball back..

mervyn-joel   July 13th, 2010 5:41 pm ET

Mel was raised 'tough' and abusively and so has been angry at the world all his life. The result ... he has a trashed and distorted view of the world around him. His work and attitudes have always reflected a disturbed, even twisted, mind . Why would anyone think his own personal life would be different? What you have known is what you are. Forget about him – he's not worth the thought.

Largo Barbara   July 13th, 2010 5:57 pm ET

This man needs some anger management classes. – maybe a year's worth – he just doesn't hold it in. Stop drinking Mel.

gerald Jolly   July 13th, 2010 8:18 pm ET

When a woman marries a man for his money, she has to be prepared to take the FLACK if she wants to wear the HAT

She got angry at Mel when he told her.

You're just another stop along life's long lonely road.

Lucy   July 13th, 2010 8:19 pm ET

I took the poll and answered YES that Mel Gibson can recover. Sadly, money trumps everything today, and he's got lots of it. He'll go to "rehab" and then spend his money to make movies. If he has a hit, he'll be back in Hollywood's good graces.

gerald Jolly   July 13th, 2010 8:19 pm ET

Dont you think that OKSANA looks a lot like

ingrid paterson   July 13th, 2010 9:03 pm ET

Hi Larry,
Ya what Mel is saying is horrible,I can see that. What I don't get is when Oksana was hit while holding her baby why she didn't go to the police at that time? Was she not worried about the safety of her baby and that this was a bad inviroment for her child to be in or was she more concerned about money? Every show is talking about Mels tape no ones even brought this issue up.
I hope Mel And Oksana both get the help for the bbies sake.

alienated parent   July 13th, 2010 9:24 pm ET

before you people put the noose around Mel Gibson's neck you had better check out parental Alienation ! Just ask Alex Baldwin !

Maria   July 13th, 2010 9:25 pm ET

Well; First of all, Mel's Fiancee is Russian(???) She is young and she's nobody. I do not trust Russian womens. I think she framed him with this phone call, cause#1; she was too calm talking back to him, cause she knew she was recording him(That was so dirty from her part). She is playing now the victim. Think about it , if you know that someone is recording your conversation? would you talk the same way she was talking back to him????Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! She wants millions from him, she is a very smart cookie!!!! Listen very careful how he talk to her over the phone!!! She was using him!!!

Marie McMartin   July 13th, 2010 9:25 pm ET

Get Mel's wife some acting lessons, she sounds like she's reading a script. If you listen to the tone and inflection of her voice it just doesn't sound natural, it sounds like she's trying to put emphasis on key words and it sounds a bit too contrived. Mel's supposed voice does sound natural, and we know he's an alcoholic and has anger management problems in the past, so maybe his reaction is real, but there's no way that the wife is – she's clearly reading from a script of some sort – you can hear it in her voice.

oliver   July 13th, 2010 9:29 pm ET

We have one of the biggest oil spills in decades, worldwide every 3sec. a child dies (no food/water/medicine), but yet the biggest story is some comments on tape.

now i understand why "half the word" hates us...

Kurt   July 13th, 2010 9:33 pm ET

Golddigger? I don't agree with Mel Gibson abusing his wife, physically or verbally. But... as a wealthy individual, I can see how she is or could a golddigger, used him. Using his weakness, alcoholism to profit. His alcoholism does not excuse his abuse to her, but let push his buttons and record it. Her voice, is so scripted. He called her "using"... I think Hollywood isn't responding because they understand golddiggers that will do anything for a buck, even if it means ruining a career, or cause a man to lose his sanity.

steve Fontaine   July 13th, 2010 9:39 pm ET

This is a private argument people. And this woman obviously provoked this situation. She was the one making the recording so she was on her best behavior. I'd like to hear a recording of one of their arguments when she didn't know she was being recorded.

This is a private argument! Mel does not have to apologies to anyone.

The Media should be ashamed of yourself for allowing this woman to manipulate all of you. And more ashamed of publicly ostracize Mel Gibson without fully understanding the situation.

All this while OJ Simpson still walks free. Why no more talk about that?

I hope she gets nothing from Mel.

Harrobene   July 13th, 2010 10:09 pm ET

I will watch his movie over and over again. I don't believe this woman is a saint. She has a case in court, so why didn't she leave the tape there especially when a judge is already handling it. She just wants to disrupt his career. As far as I am concerned, it is not working. Listen to the tapes. Like she was reading a script.

film11   July 13th, 2010 10:09 pm ET

I think it is shameful that personal arguements between couples has top be splashed all over the media. I've heard couples have arguements that were even worse than what I heard from Gibson. No, that does not condone the words or possible physical actions. But we don't know this woman, nor what led to the outburst. Golddigger? Maybe...after all, this is not her first child. What I find equally as reprehensible as this invasion-of-privacy is how so many are quick to judge. Look at how people paint some kind of monster. Again, his crime was vile...but he was not a repeat offender, and certainly not a "pedophile." He did make one terrible mistake over 33 years ago...and, as far as we know, never did so again. More than one can say about some members of the clergy. Yet, despite even the woman's pleas to forgive him...people are screaming! I wonder how many hidden skeletons all these judgemental folks have hidden in THEIR psyches!

GREG LEWIS   July 13th, 2010 10:20 pm ET

John H   July 13th, 2010 11:12 pm ET

@Plagiarism is immoral...Yes, you are right, I should have directed my advice to Mr. Gibson. I didn't realize that I had typed in Alec Baldwin until after I submitted my comment and went right back and corrected it. People comment so quickly that my change did not show up until around 1/2 dozen comments later. You can see where my mind was but my advice goes the same to both of them.

cindi   July 14th, 2010 12:32 am ET

i wil always watch me, he is an awesome actor. i dont believe i hitting a woman. to me thats all he's guilty of. all couples argue and say stuff they dont mean. we dont no what kind of woman she is. shes probably not innocent eithee. im surw she has said things to him. i think thats why he's so upser. givw him a break, we all get angry. he's only human. i will always lov wm and watch every movie he has and come out with. remember, i dont think it right to hit a woman. but let me ask this? what all has she done and said to him. we only hav her story and audio, of course shes not gonna record anything she says about or to him. let it rest, rheres morw things in this country.but i will always lov mel gibson. let it go, get the important new on here. we dont no hee and and the things shes done. concentrate on our brave solidors riskin there lives for us.

mark   July 14th, 2010 12:52 am ET

I think it it should be left to the courts. not the public to stone him to death. Everyone sounds like the Roman mob.

Cajazz76:24:8   July 14th, 2010 1:18 am ET

Ehhh! Mel was just Roman around drunk and decided to Russian to a bit of a tirade...No need for him to get stoned, drunk does him just fine...and when he enters the courts to play tennis, he'll sober up after a few volleys of vodka laced coffee..

Karen   July 14th, 2010 1:31 am ET

Shame on everyone who thinks has the right to judge before any declaration of the people involved! Shame on Oksana on going so public, if it is the case! Those tapes are obviously so premeditated... just push the right buttons on Mel Gibson, and then press "record"! How calm she sounds while being so threatened... AMAZING!!

Ashley   July 14th, 2010 5:49 am ET

Poor Mel,come back to Australia.America is a joke..

Anna from Moscow (yes I am)   July 14th, 2010 6:25 am ET

It's hard to imgine that even listening to that person's voice some people can still blame Oksana – I guess it is all because she is attractive and you are overweight and jealous.

Good lord, of course she taped him, it's the threats she received to her life -obviously on legal advice – otherwise who would believe her??? She DID get restraining order from him,

Good lord, people, stop being jealous! Just hit the gym and cut on starbucks and bigmacs.

Felix   July 14th, 2010 9:46 am ET

Unfortunatelly I am on the side of Mel. Knowing Russian women, they are really something. They have no feeling, on their mainds is only money money. They are using all ways how to get money.
Rusian in general have very little moral values.
I believe that he was furious , because Iam convinced that she is constantly blackmailing him. The child that she has with him is only to blackmail him for money.
I really feel sorry for him but I do not uderstand that he was so stupid, that he descend into an affer with this woman

SONIA   July 27th, 2010 9:25 am ET

She looks so calm and polite because she was the one recording everything. That's easy. Well, in my point of view, he made a mistake when he decided to end his marriage for this "lady". She used him and then she probably cheated or got cold...and he got pissed. Those tapes are ridiculous, this was private stuff that should have stayed private. He is a great artist and I will keep admiring him the same way.

razs   July 27th, 2010 3:12 pm ET

mel gibson is a good actor but u must relize something when u have been in so many movies for so many decade of years u attending to think u in the movies, and when people get mad very mad they tend to say anything any words come out there mouth, now it was wrong of what he said but his girlfriend that was set up because aint noway a man hit me and my baby and i am calm bullxxxx.. she should have been cursing him out but she was reading all that from a book are a piece paper something is up with her. she had know anger and he broke a teeth. yeah right
