Exclusive: Sophie B. Hawkins on Gulf Spill

Posted: 10:32 AM ET

Thank you, Larry King, you are a great human being and you show it by supporting the folks of the Gulf and the beings of the sea and sky, and bringing us all together to heal this hurt created by the oil spill.

I wrote my new song, The Land, The Sea & The Sky, originally to show our connection with the Earth because I have long been an advocate of the Earth and then when I first heard about the Gulf disaster I just knew I had to do something more.  Like many people, in those first few days I felt helpless and didn't know what I could do.  But we can all help, if you can't personally go down and volunteer, we can at least support the people who are.

Every penny of profits from The Land, The Sea & The Sky goes to Waterkeeper Alliance, who is on the frontlines of helping clean up the affected environment and creatures, test for toxicity, work with the fisherfolk to put their lives back together, and train volunteers to help.  I hope your fans will download it from iTunes or my website.  People can click here to learn more about Waterkeepers efforts.

With the help of you and your viewers, it is vital that we keep this crisis at the top of the news every day. It is a crisis of monumental proportions.  Today I heard from John Wathen, Hurricane Creekkeeper who told me that he has "horrid photos of entire pods of dolphins and a Sperm Whale trying to escape the oil slick.”

And the oil is still flowing.  Every day.  We have not even begun to see the havoc it will wreak.  Now is the time for everyone on the ground to raise their voices for all of the creatures and people who depend upon the Gulf for their lives and livelihoods.

I am so proud to be partnering with Waterkeepers, who are the voice for the Gulf Coast's waters.  The Gulf Waterkeepers are our first line of defense against the BP oil disaster. Their incredible knowledge of the marshes, wetlands, beaches and inner-coastal waters make them invaluable first responders.  Their commitment makes them critical and effective community leaders.  Their wealth of scientific, legal and political expertise provides answers to the questions we have about our environment.  Their dedication to a full recovery of the Gulf is unmatched.  Spread the word by sharing on Twitter and Facebook.  You can be sure I will be tweeting about it for many months to come @therealsophieb.  Please support them by downloading the song or donating to them directly, and together, we can Save Our Gulf.

Thank you again, together we can accomplish what separated would destroy us.

Hey Sophie! Is that a leather coat that is sporting those FURRY cuffs??? How do you like your Peking duck, Kobe beef, and Maine lobster tail served up???

Dear Larry:

I was wondering why no reports on progress reports on BARBARA WALTERS' health after surgery sometime in May..

She's such a cherished public figure the paucity of news is troubling.

Do you have any news? Thanks

Jeanne J. Rose

FYI, Sophie B Hawkins is a vegan and it is faux fur, she's trying to do something positive and I applaud her. Her message is positive and inspiring and the song is great.

Have you thought about what a brilliant strategist McChrystal is? He probably already has a publisher and press agent lined up. Why else would an intelligent general make those comments to a Rolling Stone reporter? He saw a future as just another retired general and looked at the way people like Oliver North have turned their notoriety into profit. He'll write a book, hit the megabucks speaking circuit, and Fox News will pay him whatever he wants. If he has political aspirations, he's set. Actually with the kind of strategy he just pulled off, he's a natural for politics.

Doesn't faux fur sorta kinda define your true inner feelings towards animals? You must be her clothier and chef and "damn I wish you were her lover" Of course, that would mean you have a door that swings both ways which is okay, but I get a faux paux sense of indignation that she and her furry cuffs are a teeny bit purported to cause, sorta kinda like an enema given to a cockroach on a starvation diet.

Big Oil's bought and payed for federal judge has already over-ruled the objection to continue the deep sea crude Oil drilling moratorium until the appeal reaches the federal appeals court. However Obama's team of attorneys have countered by issuing another order for a moratorium on deep sea Oil drilling under another legal cause.

The Republican politicians including Bobby Jindal are jumping up and down like Rush Limbaugh at a cafeteria yelling drill baby drill.

I get the feeling a large amount of the crude Oil pumped out from the Gulf of Mexico region in America's territorial waters GOES to nations other than America. In other words a large reason Republican's chant drill baby drill is for domestic Oil for America, and I have the feeling that is a outright LIE. Much of that harvested Oil is sold to over-sea's nations for major Dollars!

Ethanol plants in America however immediately produce usable fuel and are 100% used here in America. ALREADY Ethanol plants in America are producing more usable fuel for America than America receives from Saudi Arabia and Republican politicians have not been helpful in establishing Ethanol plants across America. Imagine how far America could ween itself from crude Oil if Republican politicians were voted out of office.

Smith in Oregon, I totally agree. Big Oil owns America. It has bought and paid for our country. There are to many avenues and people to be paid and called legal. The senators and congressmen are the real shakedown artist. Even our Supreme Court has removed limitations on political contributions. Our judges seem to be paid for. All this money will determine what we hear not what is true during campaigns.

Dianne   June 25th, 2010 9:07 pm ET

Larry, I have been reading more and more articles on Jindal especially and other gulf coat politicians are not using the resources available to them. There is a large amount of National Guards just sitting there waiting for the states to use them. I also have read articles that Louisiana donot want to use the voulenteers to help with the animals, by saying those people donot know how. The voulunteers are willing to do whatever and be trained to help. Perhaps Jindal needs to take some advice from those not in the area. They keep complaining about nobody is listening and to understand you must be from that area. Maybe the problem is Jiindal, who cannot listen and use what he has. The yelling of outrageousness and complaining gives him an upper hand for higher elections. All we hear is what the government and others are not doing. When the gulf gets what it wants it is still unhappy and it seems to be very little anger at BP. Everyone knows the US government does not have oil drilling equipment and this area certainly knows the laws and contracts of oil and gas. This area has always wanted limited regulations for oil and gas. The politicians of this area makesure of that fact. However, the area holds the government more responsible than BP whom the gulf to continue with business for oil and gas as usual But it is the governments fault although you donot use some of the resources offered to the gulf area. Maybe to a certain extent it is political because this area has the nations sympathy and politicians will use it for votes and higher political office. Nothing is impossible when it comes to politicians and big oil.

Nice work, Sophie B. Hawkins.

Smith in Oregon   June 25th, 2010 9:32 pm ET

@ Dianne, thank you for your kind comments in insights.

Recent legislation requires BP and Big Oil to entirely pay for the spill cleanup, and what that entails. Big Oil company's are not used to doing that. It is a tug a war between BP and the Federal Govt. over getting the people and resources needed to respond to this disaster. Republican Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal is the one standing up demanding deep sea crude Oil drilling continue while this single enormous mess continues!

The Republican politicians are so utterly corrupted by Big Oil, they could be seen as a Heroin addict so hopelessly addicted to Heroin they'll gladly sell their family's heritage for another bag of Heroin no matter what that costs their family or neighbors.

The investigative reporters at MSNBC appear to have rolled up their sleeves and found ALL of the Big Oil company investments the Federal Judge that ruled against the deep Ocean moratorium was involved with. And showed how that impacted his net worth, retirement fund etc. I hope that CNN will do the same in a more in-depth look than the superficial scan done and reported on by Anderson Cooper (a good first step nonetheless).

Just imagine would be terrible if we were all forced to stop eating seafood. Imagine a world without seafood........hard to.

Maybe they need to STOP all oil-sea-drilling NOW!!!!!!!!!!! The risks are just too high. The oceans can't take another disaster.

I think I just heard that BP is going to start drilling off the sea of Alaska. Is it true???????

Saw Barbara Walters being interviewed on Entertainment Tonight after she had her operation to replace a heart valve. She was walking along the street while talking and said that she was feeling great and she was looking quite good to me too.

Jessie from Auckland, NZ   June 25th, 2010 9:58 pm ET

It's clear that Sophie wants to help in anyway she can. She comes across as genuine and not looking to promote herself but instead the gulf. Her new song is fantastic, is she going to be Larry King soon ?

june   June 26th, 2010 9:33 pm ET

Read Revelations the 16th chapter about the gulf, it will not get better

Cajazz76:24:8   June 27th, 2010 1:47 pm ET

I do believe Revelations 16 was referring to the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers or were you referring to the Gulfs of either Aden, Oman, Persia, Aqaba, Bahrain, Suez, Sidra or the Gulf of Paria? I am confused by your convolution theorem of time domain, as well as, your geography. Perhaps you should fully realize that the bible is a purely bastardized literary work and of zero value to assessing the 'man made' disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Duh!!

louise   June 27th, 2010 7:06 pm ET

Its a cord coat and fauz fur cuffs.... Ca Jazz you need glasses...Go sophie keep up the good work sorry some people chose to be a critic instead of saying thanks! Lou

Citizen Jane   June 27th, 2010 10:45 pm ET

Larry –

Will you PLEASE interview Retired Army General Russel Honore who intervened with his military strategy to save New Orleans after Katrina and now has a possible workable strategy to clean up and save the Gulf from the oil disaster? What ADM Thad Allen isn't doing, Gen. Honore may be able to. We owe it to ourselves and our country to give him some air time.

Forget all the glitzy celebs for a bit and lets focus on anyone and everyone who can save our ocean and marine life until we get the disaster under control!

Thank you,
A Heart Sick Fan

Congratulations on Turkey's decision to close ALL Turkish Airspace to Israel. Turkey would do well to purchase several Russian made S-300 anti-aircraft missile batterys for protecting it's country in case Israel decides to retaliate against a NATO country again.

Attacking a NATO flagged ship in International Waters is in International Law and NATO treaty's the same thing as an attack upon the very country of that ship's flag, namely Turkey which is a NATO member. The NATO treaty calls upon all other NATO countrys to hold Israel fully accountable for its attack upon a NATO member.

Turkey should now warn America that any further killings of Turkish civilians by Israel and Turkey will close it's airspace to America and it's borders to the US Military convoys carrying war supplys to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Kyrgyzstan should follow with closing it's airbase to America's refueling tanker fleet used to refuel fighter jets over Afghanistan.

i am from florida and it is starting to come here the oil.Can you maybe believe that maybe this was a disaster set by someone who wanted the oceans and the animals gone and destroyed?I'm starting to think maybe someone maybe did this on can such accident happen .i think something is very wrong and it should be investigated now. From every angle.our poor sea's our poor fishermen, our poor fish animals wild life and out poor people who live on the ocean and near it.May god save our sea's wild life and fisherman and people who are suffering.may the president do something more than words to help us all.and congress because it effects everyone

Jessie from Auckland, NZ   July 17th, 2010 11:20 pm ET

Yes, it does seem sinister the oil spill. On the other hand accidents do happen or it was an accident just waiting to happen. God is watching though and he sees and knows everything.

Hope the new cap is working and if it is, wonderful. Just makes you wonder why it couldn't be done in the first place.........

All the best with the clean-up work and restorations, etc.......
