Can the power of prayer stop the oil spill in the Gulf?

Posted: 10:06 AM ET

You've seen the devastation. Now it's your chance to help. Tune in Monday night for a special "Larry King Live, Disaster in the Gulf: How You Can Help" telethon featuring an all-star panel of guests joining forces in the Gulf region. Don't miss "Larry King Live," 8 p.m. ET Monday on CNN.

(CNN) - While cleanup crews and technical teams continue efforts to stop crude gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana lawmakers are proposing a different approach: prayer.

State senators designated Sunday as a day for citizens to ask for God's help dealing with the oil disaster.

"Thus far efforts made by mortals to try to solve the crisis have been to no avail," state Sen. Robert Adley said in a statement released after last week's unanimous vote for the day of prayer. "It is clearly time for a miracle for us."

The resolution names Sunday as a statewide day of prayer in Louisiana and calls on people of all religions throughout the Gulf Coast "to pray for an end to this environmental emergency, sparing us all from the destruction of both culture and livelihood."

Also Sunday, wildlife officials were planning to transport and release 40 pelicans that rescuers rehabilitated after finding them covered with oil. The birds will be moved from New Orleans, Louisiana, to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Port Aransas, Texas.

If such a benevolent supreme force existed It never would have allowed all this destruction to the planet It created and especially not the mass suffering and death of innocent animals/marinelife. Sunday would be better used as a cleaning day and volunteering to save helpless animals.

Is this a real question?

Todd   June 20th, 2010 11:46 am ET

I try to give deference to those with sincerely held religious beliefs, but it absolutely astounds me that we have people living in this country today who believe prayer is the answer to a situation like this. Further astounding is that we have politicians who will propose passing a resolution calling on prayer as the solution.

What do they think? That God is up there in heaven just waiting for us to ask for His intervention? If God has had the power to stop this all along but was only waiting to have His ego stroked by being asked for help, that sounds like a malevolent God instead of a loving God.

But by all means, let the praying begin. When the spill is finally stopped (in 30, 60, 90 days) by the work of engineers, no doubt the faithful will attribute it to the work of the divine. But it will beg the question why the Divine One couldn't just stop it instantly.

The oil spill is bad and everyone is worried about the Fishermen We get plenty of seafoods from the Atlantic coast and the Pacific coast.
not just from the gulf. the old story of Let them Eat Fish ,will now become Let Them Eat Meat. Why are the fishermen in the gulf crying and moaning.Who cared about all the Masons, Carpenters, Electricians, and all the other trades people who are out of work and not of thier choosing WHO. I am a carpenter who has been out of work for over 2 years and nobody has come forward to help me.What are all these fishermen crying about. Only the rich people care about schrimp, lobster and oysters. No one needs these foods to survive.

What makes anyone think tha tPrayer can stop a oil leak . It must be people who know what the hell they are doing. Don't count on the BRITS. If theyknew what the were doing we would not have had to bail them out of World War 2

Let Sen. Adley(and I use the term Loosly.)

Are they kiddin' or they completely lost all of their senses? What man has destroyed, God will not fix!
He (God) has given us a wonderful, beautiful world to live in harmony with, populated by wonderful creatures, surrounded by blue, clean oceans and amazing vegetation ... but he made one only big mistake when he "programmed" humans ... left the option open for them to self-evolve! Guess God was expecting humans to take the right turn and complete in a nice way what he has started.
The problem with it was that humans have at a certain point in their evolution – driven by greed, envy and hate – made a deadly wrong choice which as we see, let to catastrophic events, now even succeeding to put the existence of this world as a whole at high risk. Humans must finally learn, that they are solely responsible for their fate, and that every choice they make will have consequences – for good, or for bad. It's not up to God to save us from our bad choices, it's up to us to respect His Creation and make choices which will secure balance and a good life for all on this (still) blue Planet!

larry,After all the perks given by Bush ADM to oil companies. After all Bush and Cheney are oil men. Why are they so quite? Isn't BP owership owned bt Americans. Why boycott?

The question is can prayer help. The answer is yes. Buy when you pray to God for help (not for a solution), do not put is the form of a bargain such as if you help us stop this leak, we will do something that will please him. Do not put The Lord Thy God To The Test. As some here have stated, God is unlikely to take a personal hand in solving this problem but he can help those of us working to solve the problem find the answer. As you have also probably heard, God help those who help themselves.

Yes, prayer to the Lord will help. "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

President Lincoln prayed. So did Eisenhower. When Apollo 13 were having difficulty returning home, the nation prayed.

Yes, Pray that the Republican lawmakers that are entirely and directly responsible for enabling this enviromental disaster to occur, along with countless enviromental disasters and toxic super dump sites in America and around the world via their special interest corporate dumpers:

Are voted Out of Office!

The Power of prayer coupled with action seems to be the thing to do when action alone is not enough.

Smith in Oregon   June 20th, 2010 11:22 pm ET

The Bush Family Values that Republicans didn't want America to learn about:

In 2001 Bush jr's youngest brother Marvin bought a garbage and waste disposal company for the sum of 12 Million dollars with the sole goal of dumping as much toxic waste and America's inter-city garbage as it possibly could in a landfill in rural Virgina.

The Virgina State permit allowed him to dump no more than 250 tons per day. Marvin Bush dumped 6,500 TONS of toxic waste and inter-State Garbage PER DAY!

By Virgina State law, such enormous abuse is punishable by a misdemeanor charge of 1 year in prison and a $2,500 fine PER DAY of over dumping. The Virgina State Environmental inspector left his job and went to work for Marvin Bush's toxic dumping business! Although the Democratic Lt. Governor of Virgina blew the whistle on Marvin Bush's illegal toxic dump site in July 2003, the Republican State Attorney General appeared to turn a blind eye on the illegal toxic dumping and Marvin Bush continued to dump more than 1,000 tons of toxic waste and various States garbage DAILY for another full eight months!

The State of Virgina finally ordered the landfill site closed in Virgina on March 2004. It took Virgina taxpayers putting up 8.7 Million dollars to re-open that landfill. The Virgina Republican State Attorney General never fined Marvin Bush nor charged him with hundreds of criminal charges allotted for each day in violation of the Virgina State permit.

During a Larry King interview with Bush sr., it was disclosed how close Bush jr. is with his younger brother Marvin Bush. 'Former president Bush jr. would often go to camp david, call Marvin and have Marvin stay with him at Camp David during his countless retreats and vacations away from the oval office'.

The vast corruption of the Bush Family and in particular Marvin Bush in this posting reminds me of the Steven Seagal 1997 movie, 'Fire Down Below' where Seagal played a federal EPA agent fighting intense graft and corruption by a very well connected toxic waste 'dumper' and 'disposer' who made vast amounts of money by illegally dumping toxic and often hazardous waste in the rural backwoods of nearby Kentucky.

How ironic the utter corruption and absolute disregard of the residents of that State depicted in the movie 'Fire Down Below' would later come to life by one of the Bush Family members in rural Virgina. As depicted in the movie, even the State EPA head was in fact employed by the illegal toxic dumper!

Everyone is so angry, not just about the gulf but about all of it.We play the blame game we shouldn't we should just try to find ways to stop big coops from destroying our world but in all fairness aren't they just trying to keep up with us the people.I mean come on our cell phones;pda's;computers;game systems;cars;big screens;we need oil;we need electricity more energy;we need gas;we need to stop look around our livesand see what we want compared to what we need everything in my house I am so ashamed I can use a hand can opener to open cans, I can wash my dishes by hand, and surround sound for my big screen come on I mean just sitting on my couch looking at things I do not have to have this stuff I wouldn't die without it.So if they stopped just making those 3 things how much would that help our world?I don't know but I can just imagine just those 3 things all the different companys so many different models All the Pollution they put out so are we not to blame to?

Its Really Sad To Read The Comments. Sad That People Have Forgotten The Power of Our God . Sad That People have Forgotten Who Created This World in The First Place. God Did Not Do This. It Was Greed and it is Only The Begining of The Pains That Our Bible Clearly Talks About in The End Times. If We Do ,Not Turn This Discusting Country Around. We Need To Not Only Clean Up The Gulf, We Need To Clean Up The Children and The Morales in This Country. Pray ! Yes You Had Better get on Your Knees and Cry Out To God in Heaven and Hope he is Listening to You, Becuase he Will Close His Ear To Many Who Have Closed Their Ears To Him. God Allowed This Tragedy to Happen and Yes He Can Heal This Mess. We Must Get Our Country Back To One Nation Under God. He Will Forgive Us and Heal This Once Great nation. But We MUST Be Willing To Change for The Good of All Gods People. Vengence is Mine Said The LORD...

It is beyond consideration that the Almighty would answer such a prayer that is not asked in humility or in reverence to Him and His divine authority. Jesus the Son of God made it clear that, "Howbeit in vain do they worship Me, teaching for doctrines, the Commandments of men." Mark 7:7 in the proverb of Solomon it is also said, "He that turneth away his ear from hearing the Law, even his prayer shall be abomination." Proverbs 28:9 the same proverb says also, "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." verse 13

America was opened up 400 years ago. Since then it has provided freedom from monarchial taxation without representation yes, but more importantly to provide the liberty of conscience to them that were being butchered and burned for not submitting to popery in Europe.

This nation has been great not because of the second amendment to bear arms, which seems to be tops in many minds. This nation is great because the 1st amendment says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." This amendment came about I believe because of a question James Madison asked William Bradford of London England, “Is an Ecclesiastical (Church) Establishment absolutely necessary to support civil society and a supreme Government, and how far is it hurtful to a dependent state?” None can doubt that James Madison was indeed a devout Christian, yet he knew well the history and tyranny that comes from men who are in power, that say they speak for God, and then usurp power over their minds of all claiming, "God's will."

For the religionist in America, The Lord God gives the same admonition he gave Eli the priest/judge of Israel, " Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the Lord saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed." 1 Samuel 2:30 and, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the Law of thy God, I will also forget thy children." Hosea 4:6

In regards to man's duty to God, Jesus said, "Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's." Matthew 22:21

God has a Law of Ten Commandments, which includes the Seventh Day Sabbath that honors Him as our Creator. "For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it." Exodus 20:8-11

Messiah Jesus Himself is spoken of as the Word of God who made all things and He also titles Himself, "Lord of the Sabbath Day." John 1:1-3; 14 & Mark 2:27, 28

When men in our day, whether they be priest or politician, take to themselves to say this or that about what we must do to gain the attention of heaven in regards to our current plight in the gulf of Mexico, they must first remember how that in times past there was repentance for ones sins that preceded the hand of God lifting that plague or that illness or that army that arose against His people.

I have no doubt in the power of God for His prophet Elijah stood firm on Mt. Carmel long ago and made certain that that nation Israel understood Who was the True and Living God and that He would not accept Sun worship, its priests, or them that worshipped it. Even after the death of King Ahab and his harlot wife Jezebel, that nation went into Babylonian captivity 70 years for worshipping the Sun (See Ezekiel 8).

Revelation 11:18. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

Be assured that having a day of prayer on the Sun day that it will not give honor to the King of the universe, who made all things, who sustains all things, and who redeemed man at the cross of Calvary. Since that is the case, be doubly assured the He will not honor this prayer.
