I would like to know why President Obama doesn't request the super-tanker vacuuming system in which Saudi Arabia used empty oil tankers to siphon away a huge oil spill at sea. A flotilla of empty oil tankers pumped the vast oil- and- water slick into their cargo holds, then sailed to ports where the oil was removed and the water then returned to the sea.

Question 1. What was so important in Chicago Mr. President that you could not spend the weekend down in the Gulf to speak with the locals who are suffering from this disaster BP has created. You are supposed to be the anti Bush. Instead of picking up a few tar balls on the beach, you should have went to the people and reassured them you ARE with them!

2. Why are you and your staff making job offers to people to stay out of political races when you know the GOP is ready to pounce on anything you do? Why would you set yourself up like that? Enough of the back room deals. Remember the anti Bush?

Mohammed Konneh, North Carolina, Charlotte   June 3rd, 2010 6:09 pm ET

Can this administration be trusted to handle any future disaster when the oil spill catastrophic engulfed the gulf of Mexico with total lost and unbearable situation and the administration was slow to respond immediately after public criticism before stepping in.

Dr Alan Cornford   June 3rd, 2010 6:20 pm ET

While the president thinks there is only one real solution to stop the blowout - a relief well ... there is another. The BOP may be cut off just above the Christmas tree and a shutoff value sealed to it via cement in a confinement cylinder within a week. We should all not just think of collecting the oil - the BP main aim - but actually stopping the flow!

And by the way ... the new BP cap should not mate with the jagged riser cut ... but with the smooth flange just below it ... for a complete seal ....but will BP listen? ... that seems not to be a strong suit at present!
Good luck - the planet is counting on it!

I would like to know why President Obama wont get the Kevin Costner machines into the water and PUT THEM TO WORK, dividing the oil from the water?ALSO the SUPER TANKER VACUUMING SYSTEM,and get a hold on this DISASTER before its TOO LATE!! If we dont try NEW IDEAS and CLEAN THIS UP,WE ARE GOING TO SUFFER SEVERELY in the FUTURE along with the WILDLIFE!! VERY SAD!!!!

DerrickAnthony   June 3rd, 2010 6:31 pm ET

When people rant and rave on CNN, does the person you're complaining about ever see it, and do they care? What a bunch of idiots you guys are. Bush was no good, then Clinton was no good, the other Bush was no good – now, Obama is no good. Is anyone ever good enough for you idiots? No, they will never be. That is because, America is no good – not any more!

UNEMPLOYED   June 3rd, 2010 6:48 pm ET

Could you explain what's going to happen to the livelyhood of the supply boat companies, support workers and drilling rigs employees thats affected by the closure of the deepwater drilling by mms.

Smith in Oregon   June 3rd, 2010 6:49 pm ET

It appears that President Obama somehow has found the time to learn more about the extensive and very protective Oil and Gas Laws which have been carefully written and crafted by decades of Republican lawmakers in Washington DC.

With Dick Cheney's secret back room deals with Big Oil, nearly all of the past decade of Oil well leases were granted WITHOUT environmental impact study's and contingency study's being made! Including the current foobar in the Gulf of Mexico. This latest Republican laid landmine has exploded on the American taxpayers and the American citizens living along the Gulf of Mexico.

It is typical Republican lawmaker insanity which would allow drilling for and pumping a very toxic poison out of the ground WITHOUT a federal environmental impact and emergency contingency plan already drawn up and completely reviewed. The greedy Republican lawmakers weren't thinking of how many American people 'might' be poisoned, it appears all they were thinking of was Big Oil dollars in their pocket and a slice of the pie to their States most wealthy and mostly white citizens.

In the midst of one of the largest economic slumps in American history, President Obama is busy locating and throwing out the Republican special interest payoff's to the Big Oil industry. One such that was found and being thrown out is Billions of American Taxpayer dollars being GIVEN to Big Oil Corporations as subsidizes. Despite Big Oil Corporations making the largest recorded profits by any Corporation in the world during the horrific Bush-Cheney administration, Bush-Cheney continued giving Big Oil BILLIONS of American Taxpayer dollars in FREE Subsidizes. President Obama is busy in locating and throwing those OUT.

I support President Obama's stoppage on all BIG OIL DRILLING offshore while his administration add's legislation which was stripped out by the previous Republican administration to strongly regulate Big Oil leases, require federal environmental impact study's, require federal contingency plans in case of emergency and stop the insanity of giving Billions of American taxpayer dollars in subsidizes to Big Oil corporations whose profits are Billions per month.

Jeff S   June 3rd, 2010 6:52 pm ET

BP could have stopped this weeks ago by setting off explosives to implode the well. It is painfully obvious that the objective is to save the well, not the environment. All of the methods they have chosen do not cause damage to the well. Profits first, baby, profits first!!!!! Why didn't the government force this?? Because big oil is in bed with the government.

Cathy   June 3rd, 2010 6:54 pm ET

On a topic other than the gulf spill, I am wondering why President Obama chose to give Paul McCartney a life-time achievement award. I do not recall hearing about his honoring another performer with this award; if I'm wrong, please correct me. Paul was a member of what most would call the greatest group ever; of course, we'll never know how his life-time career would have gone had he performed solo the entire time. I have no problem with Paul receiving the award; I'm just wondering if there was no American performer who might have been honored first.

Janice Connett   June 3rd, 2010 7:22 pm ET

I am proud of our President not giving "knee jerk reactions" to problems. People who want this type of reaction do not understand it takes a balanced demenor to deal with high crisis under pressure from all sides. He has been gathering information from the best minds in the business to try to understand the best way to solve this problem.

I would like to ask: WHO was it in which administration (Bush's or Obama's) that signed off on this type of drilling? The President should hold them accountable, not take the blame (unless he knew about this himself.)

I ask those who are railing against President Obama: What solutions do YOU have and have you presented them to the right channels?

With great restraint, I simply suggest that BP to get this CEO out of our sigh & out of our countryt. Surely he is replaceable, and should be fired. He has no credibility and only creates discontent among all of us having to witness this greedy tragedy.

mcmargie   June 3rd, 2010 7:35 pm ET

What do you want Obama to do? He is doing everything he can except putting on a diving suit and diving down to plug the oil hole himself? It wasn't his fault and I'm sure he and his administration is concerned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The blame is on lying BP. Can you believe BP Exec. Hayward stated the other day that he "wanted his life back"? What a narcissistic creep! No thought at all to how the lives of the fishermen and their families, restaurants, eco-sytem, etc are effected.

Lorna Teske   June 3rd, 2010 7:57 pm ET

I must have said something big business wanted to censor. What happened to freedom of speech CNN ? I still say, President Obama is a great president. He has been on top of the oil spill issue from day one. Anyone who went to his web site from day one would have seen that. He is a great leader. I continue to be impressed with him. He is articulate and intelligent and can think on his feet. He has been doing all that he can do with regard to the oil spill crisis. I agree with him that "yelling does no good." That is the mark of a true leader. He amazes me staying calm during such stressful times. I am glad that he is our president. I agree with most of his views. I agree with the 6 month stopping of deep water drilling, but would extend that to never again. I agree with him on having rules and regulations. That is what keeps things fair for everyone. Thanks. I hope I was able to censor what you did not like from my first message.

Smith in Oregon   June 3rd, 2010 8:20 pm ET

On Sanjay Gupta's toxic childhood, the role of Big Oil, and its connected toxic poisonous Petrol-Chemicals wasn't stated enough. Well over 90% of ALL the toxic poisonous found in ALL infants, pre-natal bloodstreams, city water supply's, in the air, across North America ALL originally came from CRUDE OIL pumped out of the ground by Big Oil corporations.

Refined into pesticides, creosote and a host of plastic chemicals which have a toxic quality to them which have directly contributed to the deaths of MILLIONs of American citizens, and many more Millions are directly suffering from the Cancers caused by Big Oil's chemicals released into the water table and spewed out of the exhaust pipes of countless automobiles into the very air we breathe.

Crude Oil contains countless poisonous chemicals and yet thru the insanity of the Republican lawmakers they allowed and encouraged drilling and pumping those toxic poisons without federal environmental impact study's and federal emergency contingency plans being filed beforehand, go figure!

Beth L.Messersmith   June 3rd, 2010 8:21 pm ET

How is it that nobody has discussed the Biblical statement being made with this oil catastrophy? We should ALL count our blessings, and ask God's forgiveness. Ask Jesus to be YOUR SAVIOR !! I think the longer it goes, the more it encircles our globe. Once in all the oceans, it is only a matter of time before, somehow the oil will become ignited . Then VIOLA ! The end of the world indeed, as told in the Holy Bible New International Version Malachi 4:1 & Isaiah 34:9&10. Isaiah even specifically states "Streams will be turned into pitch. Dust into burning sulfur. Land will become blazing pitch. It will not be quenched night and day; its smoke will rise forever. From generation to generation it will be desolate; no one will ever pass through it again . "

RAE   June 3rd, 2010 8:41 pm ET

Is it illegal for BP to ask workers to sign confidentiality agreements? Can the federal government vacate them, and/or ban their use? It's like "legalized blackmail" to ask workers to be quiet, since BP is the reason their livelihood is in jeopardy.

Kevin N.   June 3rd, 2010 8:46 pm ET

Good Evening Mr. President,
If an organization or group had purposely or inadvertently set off a dirty bomb, we would sieze the organization, arrest the leaders and use what ever means to clean up the mess and then try the leaders to recap our costs with penalties and damage. I think the gulf disaster qualifies as a dirty bomb, what do you think?

HAYDEE DIBBLE   June 3rd, 2010 8:50 pm ET

Hi Larry,

I am sure the only ones that can help on the oil issue are the Engineers involved in the past manufacturing the platform. ("Deepwater Horizon"). BP needs to find all those retired Engineers and see if they can come up with a solution.

If they cannot find a solution, try to hire some of the best Engineers from other countries that might have experience on this type of issues.

Michael Armstrong Sr.   June 3rd, 2010 9:13 pm ET

Mr. Obama theres a company called super suckers that will collect the oil off the ocean please hire them and send B.P. the bill or else sell the oil they collect to pay for the project .

Teresa Green   June 3rd, 2010 9:30 pm ET

I wish the media would remind the public & the politicians that this was on immigration is NOT a racial war against the Hispanic people. It is a war to keep illegal immigrants from entering this country illegally. It would be the same if Japanese immigrants were flooding the borders & taking up residency, eating up America's citizens tax dollars & resources intended to help other Americans. It makes no difference WHERE they come from ! The term immigrant does not imply Hispanic. It means non-American individual !

Betty   June 3rd, 2010 9:30 pm ET

It is amazing how people cannot see that BP is trying to stop this how easy it is too critize where you sit. But what goes around does come around.

Michael Armstrong Sr.   June 3rd, 2010 9:42 pm ET

B.P. is trying to keep there well alive to make a profit I would not be surprised to find out later that a total shut down was possible but was not done to save the well these people are evil with greedy intentions .

Arabella   June 3rd, 2010 9:46 pm ET

I have read that European countries have a law that a well cannot be drilled offshore without a relief well being drilled simultaneously. Why doesn't the US have such a law.? Seems to be a simple answer to a possible disaster.

Betty   June 3rd, 2010 9:47 pm ET

We got best President!!!

Cheryl Noel   June 3rd, 2010 9:51 pm ET

I think the President is handling the situation as best as he could.I 'd rather, he had spent the long weekend at the area instead of Chicago, and encourage the rest of the country that the place is all good to visit. After all,I have a gret understanding of compassion for President Obama and his staff. He's been dealt a lot since being into office. As for the people in the region MAY GOD continue to bless everyone,i'm praying for a quick recovery.WE CAN'T GIVE UP.CNN and MR. KING please keep up the good work. TORONTO/CANADA

Michael Armstrong Sr.   June 3rd, 2010 9:58 pm ET

I think the president is blind folded by lies .

Scott   June 3rd, 2010 10:01 pm ET

Enough about the emotionalism, already. I am just fine with a president who spends more time coordinating real action and less with camera-bluster. He's not an emotional guy. He doesn't have to be. Emotion WILL NOT SPEED UP SOLVING THE PROBLEM! Historically, it only clouds rational fact-based action.

Scott   June 3rd, 2010 10:14 pm ET

For those who've submitted ideas:
Setting off explosives and imploding the well is dangerous because the structure of the well, well shaft, and surrounding geological structure could be fractured into a multitude of leaks that could never be plugged. And the "super-sucker" tankers are ineffective against a dispersed, multi-depth spill like this. They really have thought of these things.

Bernie King   June 3rd, 2010 10:15 pm ET

Dear Larry,

I submitted a theory to the BP Oil Engineering department in Houston on how to shut down that oil spill, by sealing the entry point at the bottom of the pipe rather than trying to cap it or block it from the top. The idea is to design an umbrella shaped device approximately half the diameter of the damaged pipe, and proceed to attach it to a drill, similar to the one that bored the hole in the first place, insert it in closed position through the center of the pipe until it reaches the the bottom of the pipe and into the oil well itself. The umbrella shield can then be deployed thereby allowing the natural upward pressureof the rising oil and gas to compress the umbrella against the entry point of the pipe to seal itself off. The umbrella vanes would have to be 15" in length and designed to open with a 30" diameter in order to seal off the 22" diameter pipe, and streamlined so as to create minimum resistance while it is lowered down the center of the pipe. This would allow the rising gas and oil to pass along the side of the umbrella shaped device until it reaches the lower end of the pipe where it can be opened up and positiond for maximum effect. Once the pipe is sealed, it can be filled with cement as originally planned. Engineering will have to use some ingenuity in the design, type of metal or other super strength materiel used, and the mechanism to deploy the umbrella shield at 5 – 6,000 feet below sea level, and release the drill connection from the umbrella stem.

I believe that if BP continues to attempt to bore relief holes that may not be completed until August, this could compound what is already a disastrous situation with oil spilling from three pipes instead of one..

Please run this idea by President Obama if you think that there is any chance of success. Only he can put the pressure on BP to look at this idea as an option. Everything to date has failed with no end in sight and is reaching a point of being catastrophic.

Thank you and G_dspeed in resolving this tragedy.

Bernei King,
Montreal, Canada

Smith in Oregon   June 3rd, 2010 11:30 pm ET

Where the HELL is vice president Joe Bidden? Hiding in Dick Cheney's former bunker?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is working her ass off dealing with the Middle East peace negotiations despite the crass, illegal and callous Israeli commando raid on a flotilla of civilian ships carrying Hospital beds, wheelchairs, medical supply's and 100 tons of food. Resulting in 10 civilians machine gunned to death and another 50 wounded. AND Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is busy negotiating with China over reigning in North Korea, and she is busy negotiating with Russia over reining in Iran.

Step Up to the Plate vice president Joe Bidden!

He needs to be pushed out of his cozy vice presidential bunker and help President Obama deal with the enormous crude Oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico while Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is called upon to help deal with the numerous international issues.

J.T. Hart, Monterey Bay, California   June 3rd, 2010 11:37 pm ET

How many are really aware of what we are doing to each other.
We cannot leave this planet until we die. Why do we continue to pollute our only source of life. Cutting corners on safety, responsibility, and overall concern for one another has shortened our next generations' life. Why do we let greed, power, and ego control our planet?

Smith in Oregon   June 4th, 2010 12:09 am ET

The Best Way to help the birds in Lousiana is to VOTE OUT Bobby (Captain Drill) Jindal and the rest of the Republican lawmakers in that entire State that pushed Louisiana into placing Big Oil's special interests far and above those of the Louisiana citizens and ecology who are now being destroyed as the result.

Rosemary C.   June 4th, 2010 1:02 am ET

Thank you J.T.Hart, Monterey Bay, CA. My sentiments exactly! The addiction to money, property and prestige by those in power, is destroying everyone's daily lives including them as they, are imprisoned by greed. The results of their addict choices impact all of us. Those of wealth and power cannot relate to masses. They can only relate to our tax dollars that they often spend foolishly.

The illnesses that will result from this tragedy in the Gulf Coast will be for generations to come. BP and the wealthy few that run this country will not be there for those whose lives and livelihoods have been and will be destroyed over time.

The human beings who need jobs and are going out to clean up the oil spill do not have on protective gear to prevent them from breathing in all these toxins. The lightweight coverage they have will not protect them well. These toxic chemicals will easily transfer through that lightweight gear. I imagine the reason that they don't wear the gear that will truly protect them, is because BP believes that would make them look bad. Once again, the masses are sacrificed for the wealthy few. Economic slavery.

Addiction knows no limits, honors no boundaries, cares nothing about others and its intent, is to take while pretending it has your best interests at heart.

Mark Borges   June 4th, 2010 1:29 am ET

Where is the Coast Gaurds sense of urgency?

Like Gergen said, "If we fought WWII like this, we would all be speaking German"

Where is Rudi Guiliani when you need him?

geoff ashworth   June 4th, 2010 1:30 am ET

When does this eco disaster become the largest in world history and not just US history? IMO BP needs to be shut down to set an example. They have been so smug and arrogant in regards to this eco disaster from the get go. Their track record in regards to being responsible speaks for itself, TERRIBLE! Bottom line is they care about their money and not the millions of people this effects. This is a world disaster and these are our waters, habitats, wildlife, and livelihoods that have been ruined and the entire world should come down on BP hard!

brian james rozzi   June 4th, 2010 2:29 am ET

larry, i do not no if you are bought and payed for. but, i am counting on you to eliminate this oil spill by b.p. greed is causing too much death to our wild life. b.p. is not from u.s. therefore, could care less. it is quite obvious that if you dig a hole to get oil and you messed up than, refill the hole with explosives. imploding the hole can be done. yes this may kill some wild life but, not more than they have already killed. IMPLODE THE HOLE LARRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you for you dealing with this issue. you will get noted for solving problem and, i can rest with the ignorance of this issue. again, thank you. brian rozzi.

Memorable Republican and Psycho-Babble Comments regarding the Gulf of Mexico crude Oil gusher thus far, feel free to add your own:

BP CEO Tony (soon to resign in disgrace) Hayward, 'The Oil spill was 'tiny' compared with the volume of water in the Gulf of Mexico'.

The Republican darling and Queen of the Tea Potty movement Sarah (Drill baby Drill) Palin, '"Radical environmentalists: you are damaging the planet with your efforts to lock up safer drilling areas. There's nothing clean and green about your misguided, nonsensical radicalism, and Americans are on to you as we question your true motives."

Fox News entertainers and king of psycho babblers Rush Limbaugh and Brit Hume, 'More oil is spilled every year in Africa, and in Nigeria than so far in the Gulf. So it's not unique, its not exceptional'.

Fox News entertainers and king of psycho babblers Rush Limbaugh and Brit Hume,'The Gulf of Mexico annually absorbs crude Oil equivalent to twice the Exxon Valdez spill, the current crisis is overblown'

Fox News entertainers and king of psycho babblers Rush Limbaugh and Micheal (Heckva Job) Brown,'They played politics with this crisis, This is exactly what they want, because now President Obama can pander to the environmentalists and say 'I'm going to shut this down because it's too dangerous'

Even more surprising is the insight offered by none other than Fidel Castro which makes more sense than the previous bobble heads:

Fidel Castro on the Gulf of Mexico Gusher, 'The Oil Spill shows how little governments can do against those who control the capital and money'

Great show, Larry.

It was also good to see commentary inserted between
the topic segments!

Hallo Larry

President Obama is exactly what this country needs right now! Your country is stuck in a consumerist system with little care for the environment over issues with money, and he can ACTUALLY make a difference. His reforms can pull you out of the debt you've put yourselves in and give people jobs and keep you from depending on this oil that is RUINING this world. STOP BEING IRRATIONAL AND BLAMING HIM FOR THINGS THAT ARE NOT HIS FAULT JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE TRYING TO LOOK FOR SOMETHING TO YELL ABOUT ...its stupid

tom yavis   June 4th, 2010 9:52 am ET

if i scored obama on getting things done he says he going to get done, need i say more? i am quite confident he will become the expert oil man of expert oil men.

Jessie from Auckland, NZ   June 4th, 2010 10:36 am ET

They need something like an oil tanker that can go out and suck up all this oil and take it back to land to someone has mentioned before this was done in Saudi Arabia with their oil-spillage crisis.

He needs all the help he can get from everywhere. This is an environmental disaster that can impact all of us.

Also, the oil-drilling legislations and regulations need to be looked into and overhauled.

I wouldn't want to be in President Obama's position at this moment. It will be very challenging. Prayers go with him and for everyone.

SMcMurry   June 4th, 2010 11:55 am ET

As always, President Obama was outstanding and really on top of it! I admire him not only for all the great work he does, I absolutely find his perseverance, good will and class under these very difficult circumstances dealing with the sheer endless problems mostly from the previous administration, while being attacked by envious and backward people (mostly GOP), wonderful! It shows smarts and will power to work for the American people. Thank you Mr. President!
