Doctor: 'Sheer will' saved Bret Michaels

Posted: 04:00 AM ET

(CNN) - Bret Michaels' "sheer will to live" kept him alive long enough last week to allow doctors to stabilize his condition after he suffered a massive brain hemorrhage, his neurosurgeon said Friday.

The rock singer and reality TV star was in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, a week after he suffered the rupture.

His sister Michael Sychak told HLN's "Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell" that Michaels was watching television at his home near Phoenix when he was stricken by an excruciating headache on the evening of April 22.

"Bret's fight to stay conscious during the hemorrhage and get to the emergency room" was key to saving his life that night, said Dr. Joseph Zabramski, the head of the medical team treating Michaels.

"He has an unbelievable fight in him and told me what kept him alive at the moment of the hemorrhage was that he 'did not want his family to wake up and see him lying unconscious in the middle of the floor,' " Zabramski said.

His recovery is complicated by "a few roadblocks," he said.

Michaels has hyponatremia, a lack of sodium in the body, which leads to seizures. He also suffers severe cranial and back pain from blood drainage, he said.

It was not sheer willpower that saved Bret Michaels.

If he had not of been wearing both of them together his pea brain would have oozed out through his nose.

All the young demeened, degraded abuse insulted women in America are saddened today because of his recovery.

it's so obvious that you are so jealous of Bret. He is the coolist guy and I can't get enough of his good looks!!

I check on his condition every day.

Get well Bret

You are an amazing fighter and good for you to overcome many desperate medical issues that so many other succumb to. I wish you nothing but loving genuine intentions to repair both your body and soul.

Gerald Jolly- Why the anger? You are disgruntled because Bret had a brain hemmorage? That is so absurd. Time to take inventory on your morals and standards...

@ Morning Moron and Lest Fortunate Osbourne.

If you codone how this puke degraded and demeened women on his stupid prgram to find a new girlfriend, then all I can say is that if I was your dad/mom or brother I would never acknowledge that you're related to me.

Cover up, get a stupid cowboy hat and kerchief, and go hide somewhere where no one can see you.

To Gerald Jolly...sounds like you have some serious issues. Bret is a beautiful man!! Did you ever think his act on his show was just that an act??!!?? . Gerald you need to focus on your own life instead of being such a hater!!
I totally agree 100% with MourningMJ.

Christopher Reeve was a man of sheer will and fighting for his life also, so what's the point here?

I have no doubt a toxicology exam was performed on his blood at the hospital. I also have no doubt the results of what Bret Michaels had in his bloodstream in terms of legal or illegal drugs is not going to be publicly disclosed unless a hospital worker smuggles out that report to a national scandal rag.

Gerard Jolly,

If you're so desperate to judge someone, look in the mirror.

Not only is your attempt at moral commentary worded like a teenager's temper tantrum, it is cowardly directed at someone who is unable to hear you. You've certainly put enough time in on this considering the "who the frig cares" comment...

Your disingeuous crusade is misplaced, mistimed, and unwanted where human beings possessing souls are simply trying to express sympathy for an infirmed and possibly dying man.

If you insist on continuing this poorly worded rant, have the courage and the common decency to have it with him when he wakes up...although I doubt you possess either quality.

Get Well Bret!!!! You ROCK!!!!

Good for Bret and his family and friends, I hope he continues with us for a long time. Regarding the nasty comments above, why does people feel the need to bash somebody they know nothing about? They watch a TV show and believe everything its presented to them. First of all, any human being that overcomes a serious disease deserves support, too bad not all of them are celebrities with succesfull tv shows and a career in entertainment. For the one that bashes Bret for "diminishing women" in his show, come on man if you think those women are forced to behave the way they do, you are dilusional, there are women like that and we should all watch the show to learn how not to behave!!!

It has been confirmed by Bret Michaels own sister, that his brain hemmorage, was nothing more that a publicity stunt, in her words.

how do you like bret now "gals".

What's with the nasty comments. Can you prove all that you are insinuating. You would have to prove it yourself, with your own eyes, I'm afraid........before you can judge. Do you have any humanity or not?

As the Michael Jackson song goes..........look at yourself in the mirror and make that change.

Another great song to remember is "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" sung by Elvis Presley. Just beautiful.

...."Before you abuse, criticize and refuse, walk a mile in my shoes."....

Having the likes of Charles Rangel as a guest does NOT enhance the listener appeal your program !!

Sorry, correction to my post above. Should read accuse instead of refuse.

Gerald, I"m so sorry you suffer from such low self-esteem that you seek attention to fuel your emptiness in places like LKL blogs. I literally have to LOL at that one. You often misquote and bring bad information to the Michael Jackson blogs as well. There have been several occassions where you misquoted bad or just wrong information, just like you did with Brett's sister quote as well. What you failed to mention is that Bret Michael's doctor is quoted multiple times reporting on Bret's condition. Are you suggesting now that the doctor and Bret are pulling some kind of hoax- like Murray and Michael Jackson? Is this the new trend now? I hope you find some happy company soon; must be lonely blogging in front of virtual reality all day finding people to start trouble with.

Get well soon Bret!

Beverly - Chicago   May 8th, 2010 8:40 pm ET

I think that Bret Michaels is very lucky to have survived such a dire medical crisis. He seems like a nice guy. I don't know too much about him but I wish him all the best for a full recovery. He is very lucky as I think most people do not survive something as serious as this.

I think that a certain poster on this blog has displayed a horrifying lack of feeling and empathy for Bret. That is really sad, How would you feel if something like that happened to you and someone showed such a total lack of sympathy and ridiculed you instead?
