Michael Douglas' son gets 5 years in drug case

I imagine a good many back-room discussions went on between Michael Douglas's advisers and the District Attorneys representing the case against Cameron Douglas. A large quantity or weight of Methamphetamine and Cocaine normally brings much longer prison sentences than a mere 5 years.

The blog article appears to indicate otherwise, however a poor layperson or minority nobody would have likely gotten 15-20 years in prison period. A single ounce of Cocaine might result with a good defense attorney and some luck, 5 years in prison, however this article appears to indicate far more than that was recovered along with a sizable amount of Methamphetamine (8 ounces).

A Strong Suggestion of a backroom deal comes from four observations:

1) Cameron Douglas was previously arrested here in 1999 when he was charged with buying drugs.

2) Cameron Douglas was also arrested in 2007 in California on cocaine possession charges.

Cameron Douglas had two prior drug related arrests which normally would weigh heavily against a much more leinet prison sentence.

3) This DEA drug bust on July 28 resulting from what appears to him FedEx-ing the drugs from California to New York between 2006 and 2009. Drug trafficking across State borders automatically triggers a FBI case of Federal criminal liability.

4) Cameron Douglas was charged with sells and dealing. Also found on his person was 10,000 dollars in cash.

Cameron Douglas had been facing a minimum 10-year sentence and a maximum of life however given his two priors the minimum 10 year sentence would have normally been unconsidered. Given trans-border sells and transportation of illegal drugs which appears to have been going on for 3 years and 10,000 dollars in cash translates to a standard 15-20 year federal prison sentence which translates to at least 12 years in federal prison served prior to any possible release.

Maybe if these celebrity parents would have spent a bit more time with their offspring during the formulative years there might have been a better chance the child would not have become what they are today. Parents away on movie sets, nannies closer to the children than their parents, boarding school (the child usually only saw parents on holidays...during the summer camp was a must. Too many material things....too little physical contact. I bet Michael Douglas's younger children see much more of their father than Cameron ever did.

You have a good point Theresa. However, in Hollywood, drugs are everywhere. There is no escaping them there. It is a way of life. The more money you make, the better drugs you can purchase! It is... what it is....

When I see the picture of Michael Douglas and the look in his eyes, I feel for him. In his mind must be the toughts that the family is worth so much money, and considering what his son was making on drugs, he could easily have set him up in his own legitimate business and done so much better than that. Or he could have done so many other things. The reality is that the possiblity exists that the son was making relations difficult with his father, or the other way around, or maybe both of them played a part which is the most likely scenario. Nevertheless it is ashame that it had to turn out this way.

I always thought in California a third crime always brings automatically a life sentence and this was the third for Cameron.
It shows that the saying is true to the last letter: "it is not what do you know, but whom do you know is important in your life"! Cameron has rich and famous parents, grandparents and friends with a lot of influance.

I do not wish that he spends the rest of his life in prison, it doesn´t help anyone. However he should do hard work for five years, it may form his character to the better.
Michael Douglas, I like you as an actor and enjoy your movies, however you must have been a very louzy father.

This is what life is all about now, expanding 'wants' not needs, the lust to own the next gadget, the next car , the bigger mansion, a holiday home somewhere else on & on it goes.
The life is spent in accumulation & paying off debts , the time flies. Kids are neglected, what really is the essence of life- time spent together, sharing sorrows, joys, achievements, little things is filtered out by meaningless clatter of things material.
The same is true on a national level. Lust for power, territories, resources & arrogance which is the result continues to prey on humanity.

Good observations and deductions. I tend to agree with you on this point. The most valuable possession, if you can call it that, is our relationships with others, (family, loved ones, friends, co-workers, other bloggers, our pets and all life forms) Those feelings and experiences carry us through our life. Everything else is inconsequential.

If we just focus on our relationships with others as you wrote, it would do so much for a world where so much is wrong.

How can some write such prose about relationships being all that matters, but then at least once a day crucify some blogger or some person who is the subject of a LKL post. Sorry, talk is great; actions speak louder.

what you say is true but you missed our point here.
To crucify someone for his religion,color,language or creed is exactly what we say should cease.
However to point out those who spew hate in their blogs on the basis of religion,ethnicity or groups or institutions who thrive on hate & fear should be criticized.
Countries which commit crimes against humanity, war crimes, perpetrate ethnic cleansing fall in the same category.
That is the meaning " relationship with others" conveys.I'm sure you & fellow bloggers would agree.

Can't judge the father's life by what the son has done, I don't think. We all have to be responsible for our own actions in the end. Harsh judgements on the father. No-one can really judge another's life. Only God can do that. He knows what is in our hearts.

Yes, bad things happen to the rich and famous also. Fame can be very hard on the offspring or anyone for that matter.

Sorry to hear what has happened to Michael Douglas' son and I just hope and pray that his son can stay on the straight and narrow path in the future. Because how many chances are there going to be?

Please show me one person who was helped by God, but with an undeniable proof!
Praying will have a psychological effect on you, induced by the belief that someone above you listens and will work a miracle. However noone is there and you just fooled yourself.
Just the same way when you drink alcohol or take drugs, although praying is not going to ruin your health. Religion is the cocain for the poor, said uncle Marx. You just make sure people living off religion continue to have a good life at your cost.
I don´t want anybody to pray for me, it is cheap, but help me or if I am hungry, give me something to eat.
That is the true charity for your fellow human being.

@ Ted....just because you don't believe in God or religion that doesn't mean that it might not be beneficial to someone else. I don't don't go to church often but when I do(you can laugh if you want), I feel more @ peace than anywhere else. I noticed as a nurse when one of my patients or their families who believed in God or some type of higher power the majority seemed to handle the situation better. They weren't as frightened or feeling alone as the other patients who believed in nothing.

You just confirmed my point voiced above, praying for someone else does benefit you, but not the person you want to help!!! You feel elated, but you could have the same feeling on the top of a mountain watching the beautiful view or caressing the head of your grandchildren.

Uncle Marx was a smart person, he said it over a hundred years ago, the rich use cocain, the poor the religion to get high.
It is a free country and we all can do what we like within reason, I just don´t like it when someone preaches me all the time or beraves me for not being a religious person.
Please enjoy your high in the church, I do it with a nice glass of scotch or brandy among good friends. A sparrow in the hand is always more preferable than the pigeon behind the clouds.

@ Ted....I won't ever develop a drinkong problem my way...you also didn't read thro,...I wrote my patients also felt better when they believe in a higher power. Just what I viewed. No, I don't like it when someone shoves their beliefs in front of my face.......that their way is the ONLY way.I have relatives like that..I had a minister who informed me I should go back to my alcoholic husband that we should have settled all our problems before we married...my solution...I asked him to leave!!!!!!
