Earthquake shakes Los Angeles

Posted: 01:20 PM ET

A magnitude-4.4 earthquake rattled residents of southern California early Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, authorities said. However, police and fire officials said they had received calls from residents awakened by the quake. Its epicenter was 11 miles east-southeast of the Los Angeles Civic Center, the USGS reported. It struck at 4:04 a.m.

"First it was a small one and then a big one," said Chris Curiel, who was working at the Vallejo Mini Market in Whittier, a town near the epicenter. "It felt like the floor was sinking."

He said merchandise on the shelves began shaking, but there was no damage. Because his market is a gas station, earthquakes are a bit more worrisome, he said.

Curiel said he knew immediately an earthquake was happening, and he has felt one before.

Ravi Singh, night shift supervisor at a 7-Eleven in Pico Rivera - the town a mile east-northeast of the epicenter - told CNN he was making coffee when the store's windows started rattling. There was no damage, he said. "Everything is fine."

Have YOU ever experienced an earthquake?

Perhap's a precursor to the recent eruption of event's along the rim of the 'ring of fire'. It's just Mother Nature adjusting her nicker's and not the cataclysm event to the 'end of time's'.

So all the earmarked 'after-truth's' can subside and you can put away your crucifixes and thumped out Bible's and Koran's and curses back into your cranium's. Another day for you, perhaps...just not today...

@Cajazz & Dodie

You both are cute and make me laugh.

Yes, "Puff The Magic Dragon", forgot where I heard that from.

LOL. But the earthquakes not. Lucky wasn't any worse.

Good Morning Jessie from Auckland

You are correct. Earthquakes are nothing to laugh or joke about. In the late 1960s, Los Angeles had such a severe earthquake... I woke up in my bed as it was walking across the room from the waves of the quake. What a way to wake up!!! To stand on the ground and have it give way or roll under you feet is indescribable... eerie at best!

Many baby boomers grew up with songs written by Peter, Paul and Mary.

Californians, start taking swimming lessons, because the day of reckoning is getting near.

@ Ted

So full of fire and brimstone this morning! Did you forget to take your laxative this a.m.? :~)

Ted   March 18th, 2010 10:10 am ET

@ Dodie

Thanks for caring, however I do not need such artificial help, my daily exercise guarantees me a natural pleasant good bye!

By the way, can you swim, it is not if, but when.

Dodie   March 18th, 2010 8:46 pm ET

@ Ted

Check out the volcano in the Canary Islands... The one with the water inside the volcano and half of the entire mountain slowly sliding into the ocean. What would happen to the East Coast should that happen?

I live for today. I do not worry about the past nor do I create unnecessary catastrophizing of the future. Oh and yes, I am an excellent swimmer... can tread water for many hours... Raised in Hawaii... How long can you tread???
