Larry, how is the earthquake in Japan related with the one in Chile?

It looks like the volcanic rim of fire is active, that active fault line sweeps thru the Northwestern Coast of the US and down to Chile.

Active volcano's venting magma excess thermal energy + movement in plate tectonics beneath the earth's surface seems to indicate Global Warming is having an effect on Earth beneath the surface as well as above the surface.

Larry - The Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere, Arturo Valenzuela, he was born in Concepcion, Chile - I wonder about his family – hope they are well

A. Smith, Oregon   February 27th, 2010 10:19 pm ET

Its really unfair for some observers to state that Chile's modern building construction is shoddy. If a 8.8 had occurred directly off the coast of San Francisco, much of that major city and a great many neighboring bridges and highway overpasses would be flattened just as is being now seen in Chile.

Chile's modern buildings are built to withstand moderate earthquakes just like those in California. In other words, Bush-Cheney's crooks in Haliburton Construction had no part in building Chile's modern buildings in my opinion.

Chile exports much of America's Copper and nearly all of the Lithium that is used to produce lithium battery's. I would expect prices for both of those commodity items to raise considerably!

Liliana McCullough   February 27th, 2010 10:23 pm ET

Hello Larry King. Im a Chilean living in Ontario, Canada. My family are all fine. I'm not a reporter. But on line, I've heard lots of reports that are not being talked about in the North American networks. You should try to report on the area of Talcahuano, close to Concepcion, where a tsunami hit the town this morning, devastating large areas, hundreds of homes under the water. The water reached the centre plaza of the town of Talcahuano, I've seen images on Chilean TV on the web of ships in the middle of the city! This is not being reported yet. Also, there's an island called Juan Fernandez about 400 miles off the coast of Chile. Early reports say that most of the population areas have disappeared due to a tsunami there, this island is known also as the island of Robinson Crusoe. In this island, the whole cemetery is under water and children and adults are still reported missing. Thank you and regards, Liliana McCullough- Richmond Hill, Ontario

Paty Urrutia   February 27th, 2010 10:28 pm ET

I am Chilean and my family is in Penco and in Quillon, small towns near Concepcion, the epicenter of the earthquake.

My familiy is fine, but I can not reach my father yet, I assume he is out of the house, because of the tsunami alert in the area. He lives in Penco, the water entered to the main square of the town like 6 blocks from the coast.

My family does not have water or electricity but their houses are in good shape. I am happy just knowing that they are safe considering the magnitude of the situation.
Thank you so much for covering this news, I feel close to home even while recieving this bad news.

John   February 27th, 2010 10:31 pm ET

I have survived several Tornados and one EF5 Tornado, and would prefer that any day to an earthquake. My prayers are with all people that suffer from natural and man-made disasters.

JORGE   February 27th, 2010 10:31 pm ET

Hi Larry, i'm Jorge from chile. well the thing is that we have more of 300 death people, and a lot of cities without ligth. People are a little bit nervious trying to get gas for their cars and we see how bigger disaster was this earthquake.
The access for the south of Chile is very complicated but our rescue team it's doing the best for help all people.
An other thing, in the south of Santiago we have 5 buildings appartments almost in the ground and a lot of people without home.

Thanks for let me share this with the world, and we know that chilean people are strong.

Tsunami. In Japanese means Harbor Wave

michael armstrong sr.   February 27th, 2010 10:46 pm ET

There's going to be a rebound event when the underwater wave hit's the opposite great ridge and its going to create an east bound event .

Denise Vaught   February 27th, 2010 10:49 pm ET

The term Tsunami stood for and it is – Japanese, from tsu harbor + nami wave

Bill Gibbons   February 27th, 2010 10:54 pm ET

For Larry King:
You just asked someone on the air about the meaning of the word, tsunami. It is indeed a Japanese word, written in Japanese kanji as
津波 "Tsu" means harbor and "nami" means wave. So, from an English perspective, we can say it means "harbor wave." In Japanese, tsunami has historically meant "tidal wave" but it has come to carry a different meaning now.

How do you know when an earthquake is an aftershock and not a new earthquake?

Jeff Devlin   February 27th, 2010 11:07 pm ET

My wife and I have been watching CNN all day, thank you for your coverage. I am from Boston and lived for nearly 6 years in Chile. My wife is from Chile, and her father is unfortunately still unaccounted for. He lives in Penco, a small town just noth of Concepcion. She has many friends and family in and around Concepcion, and we would like to learn more about those cities near the epicenter. A lot of the coverage has seemed to be focused on Santiago, but we would like to know more of what is happening in the south, near the epicenter.

Thank you.

A. Smith, Oregon   February 28th, 2010 12:20 am ET

Earlier this month, Kyrgyzstan's president said that his country is ending the U.S. use of an air base that has been key to military operations in Afghanistan, Yep, Kyrgyzstan kicked the US out of its country even thou the CIA and US State Dept. had given them Hundreds of Millions of US Taxpayer dollars in bribes and payments to use that former USSR airbase.

The US Airforce was entirely relying on the Airbase in Kyrgyzstan for its KC-130 refueling tanker fleet to continuously refuel fighter jets flying over Afghanistan. Fighter jets very quickly run out of fuel and have a relatively short range if they are not refueled, thus this latest GET OUT AMERICA is a large blow to the fable of 'winning the hearts and minds' ginned up in some Pentagon backroom.

What to do with the Billions of extra taxpayer dollars that America now has since Kyrgyzstan told the American military it didn't want any more of its money and to get out of its airbase?

Use that money to pay for the unemployment extension in America that is helping to provide rent and food to millions of unemployed Americans during one of the greatest recessions in American history.

Helen   February 28th, 2010 1:18 am ET

A. Smith, Oregon   February 28th, 2010 5:43 am ET

A interesting observation which I share with my fellow bloggers, Larry King and the CNN Staffers:

When the Earth and the Moon are aligned, the Gravitational Forces are greatly increased. These are called 'spring tides' and exerts a strong enough gravitational force to literally pull and lift billions of gallons of Seawater in the Ocean AND these forces do not simply lift up the Ocean but also pull on the earths crust as well.

Spring Tides
When the moon is full or new, the gravitational pull of the moon and sun are combined. At these times, the high tides are very high and the low tides are very low. This is known as a spring high tide. Spring tides are especially strong tides (they do not have anything to do with the season Spring). They occur when the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are in a line. The gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun both contribute to the tides. Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon.

Whew! Ok, so what's the observation?

The Haiti Earthquake occurred during a Spring Tide of the New Moon.
The Chile Earthquake occurred during the Spring Tide of the Full Moon.

Well, isn't there two other Lunar Phases, what about them?
Those other lunar phases Quarter Moon waxing (growing brighter) and Last Quarter waning (growing darker) occur when the Sun and Moon are at right angles to one another and called 'Neap Tides'.

Neap Tides
During the moon's quarter phases the sun and moon work at right angles, causing the bulges to cancel each other. The result is a smaller difference between high and low tides and is known as a neap tide. Neap tides are especially weak tides. They occur when the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun are perpendicular to one another (with respect to the Earth). Neap tides occur during quarter moons.

Ok so Maximum Gravitational forces during Spring Tide Lunar Periods and Minimal Gravitational forces during Neap Tide Lunar Periods? YES

# The gravitational force of the moon is one ten-millionth that of earth, but when you combine other forces such as the earth's centrifugal force created by its spin, you get tides.

# The sun's gravitational force on the earth is only 46 percent that of the moon. Making the moon the single most important factor for the creation of tides.

# The sun's gravity also produces tides. But since the forces are smaller, as compared to the moon, the effects are greatly decreased.

# Tides are not caused by the direct pull of the moon's gravity. The moon is pulling upwards on the water while the earth is pulling downward. Slight advantage to the moon and thus we have tides.

# Whenever the Moon, Earth and Sun are aligned, the gravitational pull of the sun adds to that of the moon causing maximum tides.

# Spring tides happen when the sun and moon are on the same side of the earth (New Moon) or when the sun and moon are on opposite sides of the earth (Full Moon).

# When the Moon is at first quarter or last quarter phase (meaning that it is located at right angles to the Earth-Sun line), the Sun and Moon interfere with each other in producing tidal bulges and tides are generally weaker; these are called neap tides.

# Spring tides and neap tide levels are about 20% higher or lower than average.

The type of gravitational force that causes tides is know as "Tractive" force.

Don't you have a wind-up point here?

The Proxigean Spring Tide is a rare, unusually high tide. This very high tide occurs when the moon is both unusually close to the Earth (at its closest perigee, called the proxigee) and in the New Moon phase (when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth). The proxigean spring tide occurs at most once every 1.5 years.

And could you point out a recent Proxigean Spring Tide? Sure, when the Moon was full on December 26, 2004, the Christmas Tsunami swept across the Indian ocean, spawned by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra.

When is the next Proxigean Spring Tide, are there any this year? Hey, I'm just a blogger, do some research yourself!

In my opinion–Chile must have building codes since it doesn't seem to have as much damage as Haiti had. 8.8 is massive, destructive. I pray for the ones who have died 0r not recovered & also for the survivors. This occurrence is happening more often– frightening!!!

Doug   February 28th, 2010 7:26 am ET

Larry, you had a so called tsunami expert on your show last night but when you questioned him about the meaning of the word tsunami, he only knew it was a Japanese word. I was wondering if you was as shocked at his response as I was?

Cajazz76:24:8   February 28th, 2010 7:38 pm ET

Very good you noticed that...seems they have been there before....They'll survive..if only we fare as well....given the eventuality....of the event...

Doug   February 28th, 2010 10:19 pm ET

Larry, the earthquake in Chile is a tragedy. As Americans and Canadians watch this terrible situation unfold, they should be reminded that exactly the same thing WILL happen off the West Coast of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and Northern California when the Cascadia fault ruptures as it has done some seven to eleven times before in its geological history. The last major earthquake there was an estimated magnitude 9.0 in January 1700. As we witness the tragedy in Chile, we as residents of the West Coast and our governments must be mindful that we too will suffer the same devastation some day. We must be aware of the risk and prepared to cope.

Christine Pakan   February 28th, 2010 10:36 pm ET

I watched the health care summit off and on throughout the day. It was interesting that both sides used the fact that health care represented 17% of the economy in their arguments. For the Democrats, that is why we need reform. For Republicans, that is why we can only have limited changes.

We cannot afford the status quo. I want universal coverage. I want a plan that will bring health care costs down to 10% of our GDP in 10 years. To me this issue is not complicated.

The White Race Losing Control of America?

Black President

I would like to start this off by stating I am not a writer. I am an American Indian. Every culture has taken advantage of what America has to offer and the Indigenous people of this country suffer the worst of every bad thing. This is not meant to be a perfect paper. This is meant to be an open source effort for all to enter what they think is well; what ever they think is meant for this effort?

Now there is a black president in the “White House”. The white race in congress and senate doing every thing they can to destroy him? Why? Bush stole the presidency. This has never happened in American history. He literally stole the presidency illegally. This was the worst travesty in American History. Yet it went buy with out a blink of an eye. If it was a black person or any person of color this would have been; let me stop and think? This would have been absolutely chaos! A white man raped, pillaged, and plundered this country while his wife and himself became richer beyond their wildest dreams.

There is a man in Presidency trying to do good for all, and every white person is now trying to destroy him?

Illegal in America

There is a white man in my town holding up an American flag with a sign saying “ They jumped the fence send them back”. In the days of immigrants coming to America that was a different time. It is 2010 and people are coming to this country in many different ways from many different countries to seek what ever? I am and Indigenous person from this country and all of you are illegal! The Jews will never let the holocaust die. There was a holocaust in America and it was the genocide of the Indians that were here. Yet we still suffer, as it was cowboys and Indians?
Bottom line thought. You white people have nothing to say because all your ancestors are from another country! All of you came here on a boat!

Police Brutality

Give a man a badge, a gun and an organization to hide behind that will condone behavior so brutal and horrible that the laws of this country do not apply to these men and women who enter in to law enforcement.

Becoming a police officer is the best job in America, next to becoming a politician, because you can get away with murder, rape, giving phantom tickets, you name it? It is a job that comes with absolute amnesty! Especially if you are white!

Please add more?

The only state where a person can bear arms. It is a constitutional right to bear arms. Since the American Revolution. Texas? A white stronghold. Let Indians, black’s, Latino’s, Asian’s and so on bear arms any time and any where? You white people would loose your minds?

I could go on and on and on. This is a simple paper. Everyone add to it and let it move forward……………………………..

A. Smith, Oregon   March 1st, 2010 1:38 am ET

@ william, do you approve of President Obama giving monetary reparations to the Native American people as he has stated and working to do?

A interesting note of spirituality which the indigenous people often tried but failed to convey to the European settlers was the view that no one owned the land, the Creator was the landlord, they were the caretakers.

The European settlers didn't seem to be able to grasp that esoteric concept. The fault might have been the linguists involved in failing to communicate such spiritual concepts OR the European settlers were long before ingrained with fiefdom and serfdom ownership.

Native people accepted a large amount of money for various land sections and valleys here in Oregon. They were paid well by any standard. There were also many battles and fights with the many tribes that lived thru-out Oregon. One of the Oregon rivers that often ran red from Native and Settler blood was named 'Rogue' from the French settlers for Blood Red.

When the US Calvary forced the indigenous people to march thousands of miles in a forced march of tears, many elderly and children died from the exertion, exposure and hardship before they reached their designated reservations. Such cruelty is seldom if ever mentioned in American history found in America's public schools.

Here in the year 2010, more and more of humanity on Earth are realizing there is a great and urgent need for more caretakers of the earth in order to prosper and thrive.

My mom just spent a month in Chile on a mission trip mainly in Concepcion in January of this year. That was just last month. Almost her entire family lives in Concepcion. We have not been able to get in touch with anyone. She is devastated. We want to know if her family is ok. The names of the people are: Mercedes & Carlos Orellana Ramirez & the entire family, Patricia, Ricardo, Carlos, Paola and all their children. Also Ines Ramirez and her daughter Carola. Please help us find out if they are ok!!! Thank you Larry for the coverage!

The Santiago area had relatively minor damages compared to the areas near the epicenter and things are quite normal here. Power was restored within 5 hours of the earthquake and telecommunications soon after. All Metro lines are running and the airport is slowly reopening to commercial traffic.
It is unfortunate that the US government has recommended not traveling to Chile. Approximately 5% of the Chilean economy is based on tourism.
The major damages are 5 hours south of Santiago where, sadly, there were many deaths and there are many people still missing or trapped in buildings.

At this time Chile has requested limited outside aid for the recovery effort. The best way to help the people of Chile is to make sure that people are correctly informed that Chile is open for business despite the country’s current effort to restore the areas affected by the earthquake.
The response of the Chelean government has been efficient and well coordinated and they have dedicated unlimited resources to their efforts. Given its strong economy and fiscal discipline Chile has a tremendous revenue surplus to provide needed assistance.

The situation here is much different than what happened in Haiti. Chile has very strict building codes and Santiago, a city of 6 million, had one building and one bridge collapse. One museum and one church also suffered damage. Many older homes and those which did not comply with the building codes, in the poorer parts of the city, were also damaged.

Chile will recover quickly but will mourn the loss of their loved ones for some time.

Theresa   March 1st, 2010 11:04 pm ET

Even though Chile seems to have better building standards than Haiti-the destruction is massive. Watching the people looting is truly sad. It's too bad they can't make the distribution of the food & products in the stores(if there's anything left) in a more orderly fashion, so more people could share in the products. i can imagine everyone panics(survival of the fittest) but I saw some people with overflowing grocery carts & some leaving with nothing!! I just wonder when the next catastrophe happens -who is going to help? It may sound selfish–but N. America cannot continually do the majority because this fund will run out soon!!!

Navajo Joe   March 1st, 2010 11:11 pm ET

I lived several years where earthquakes happened at a rate of 1000 per year. The aftershocks are just smaller earthquakes after the initial shaker. The tectonic plate's overlapping and sliding either across or underneath one another are the initial big one...the rest are just smaller settlings. I'll say this, it is unlike anything you would ever not want to be near...

A. Smith, Oregon   March 2nd, 2010 12:22 am ET

No matter how prepared a modern city is for earthquakes, the infra-structure carrying fresh water and returning grey water for treatment is nearly always totally shattered leaving residents without fresh water and sewage handling for weeks if not many months.

Fresh bottled water is a very inexpensive insurance against greatly suffering from lack of it!

First of all, I would like to send my deepest sympathies to the people of Chile and those hit the hardest by this terrible natural disaster.

I have heard about and from another blogger about the Chilean Government not wanting to accept international aid.......because they were afraid that Big Countries would use this aid-chance somehow to strengthen their interests in Chile. Find this very interesting. The Chileans seem quite a proud and hardy people.

Recently I saw an older Chilean man being interviewed on TV after the disaster. I think he was a survivor. He said in his own stellar way.........that it was no use going on about things..........that they would put this disaster in the past and behind them........and that the Lord GIVETH and the Lord TAKETH.

Condolences to all affected by this terrible natural disaster. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

This is what I got off an internet site about the "RING OF FIRE".

Ring of Fire –

The large series of volcanoes (some active) encircling the Pacific Ocean, are referred to as being part of the Ring of Fire, and notorious for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

It coincides with the edges of one of the world's main TECTONIC PLATES and more than half of the world's active volcanoes (above sea level) are part of the ring.

Volcanoes of note include:

*Mount Saint Helen's, Washington, USA
*Paricutin Volcano, Mexico
*Mount Pinatubo, Phillipines
*Mt Fuji, Japan
