Seven-year-old boy raises $160,000 for Haiti

London, England - He's no Wyclef Jean or George Clooney, but that hasn't stopped seven-year-old Charlie Simpson from raising more than £100,000 ($161,000) for the Haiti earthquake. Simpson from Fulham, west London had hoped to raise just £500 for UNICEF's earthquake appeal by cycling eight kilometers (five miles)around a local park.

"My name is Charlie Simpson. I want to do a sponsored bike ride for Haiti because there was a big earthquake and loads of people have lost their lives," said Simpson on his JustGiving page, a fundraising site which launched his efforts. "I want to make some money to buy food, water and tents for everyone in Haiti," he said.

And with that simple call, messages of support flooded the site. "Such a big heart for a young boy, you're a little star!" wrote one supporter. "Well done Charlie. A real celebrity," said another. More donations began pouring in after the story caught the attention of the British media - with many cheering Simpson on towards the £100,000 mark. Even British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is spreading the message. His "Downing Street" Twitter alias said: "Amazed by response to the great fundraising efforts of 7 yr old Charlie Simpson for the people of Haiti."

I salute you charlie!! A child, innocent with pure mind and good heart, he aims for nothing but to care. How may of us adults could initiate such without behind objectives?......shame on us!

Cocovelvet   January 25th, 2010 3:27 pm ET

why didn't such a nice and simple way of raising funds cross so many people's minds, including mine ?? Surely there could already be more than the requested amount for the relief programme......

The sweetness and innocence of childhood. No hidden agenda, no telethon, no fanfare, and no government. A sweet, young person just wanting to help those in desperate need. God bless you Charlie

Hello Larry. My husband is a Chicago dermatologist, who is suing the estate of the late and great comedian Bernie Mac. My husband started treating Bernie before he reached stardom and Bernie consider him his big brother. I would like for you and the world to know more about this suit against the estate of Bernard McCullough, aka Bernie Mac, that is now in the downtown Chicago court system at the Daley Center. It has to do with the condition and state of health care in our country and how even the rich can fall victim and prey to large insurance companies. My husband has remain quiet, patient, and hopeful that this case could have been resolved by now. He is being attacked on all sides. Sylvia Earles

I imagine the Donald Trumps of Corporate America are attempting to contact and recruit Charlie to add to their corporate bottom lines as we speak!

Don't worry Charlie, as long as you can make 1 Million US dollars a year for a corporation in your future employment, they'll continue to pay you 10 dollars a hour!

Hiding behind children is kind of like the last resort of cowards. Not to undermine children in any way. But we will all be judged one by one. I hope that donating money and putting such child upfront is not the best we can come up with.

@Maria....I couldn't agree more! Children have a much higher consciousness than adults, and so did MJ....he "got it!". He fulfilled his mission here on earth in a miraculous and astounding way, but left us much too soon....Everything is conscious. When we understand consciousness, we understand one another and the world, and our separation to it falls away....Its all for LOVE....L.O.V.E.....: )

Charlie Simpson is quite an inspiration. And it is great to know that adults will support the efforts of young people such as Charlie. Such a sense of giving can make a young person feel valuable and hopeful and seeing the great results of hard work speaks to Charlie as to what commitment and dedication can do. Kudos to Charlie!

I watch cnn about 15 hrs a day and it is ambarassing to hear you keep saying what a great job the actors did collecting almost 9 million. You know larry canada with 10%population compaired usa and we collect 68 million.
The big names on that show alone could have donated more than 9 million without a bling.

the earthquake has been a real humanitarian disaster for these poor people. I feel the US should allow as many Haitians as want to immigrate to the US to try to start a new life. We live in a global village. That will be worth more to them than any amount of money.

jan   January 26th, 2010 1:51 pm ET

charlie met simon cowell in london as a result of his efforts and asked him for money straight away.

Expat American   January 26th, 2010 3:43 pm ET
