New Detroit scare declared 'non-serious'

Posted: 07:31 PM ET

(CNN) - A security alert aboard a Northwest Airlines jet ended Sunday after investigators determined the incident - the second in two days involving a Detroit, Michigan-bound flight - was "non-serious," federal authorities said.

The crew of Northwest Flight 253 reported a "verbally disruptive" passenger Sunday and requested police meet the plane when it arrived from the Netherlands, the airline told CNN. The man was questioned by police after the plane landed in Detroit early Sunday afternoon.

The Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight is the same one targeted Friday in what prosecutors called a failed attempt to blow up a jetliner. Sandra Berchtold, a spokeswoman for the Joint Terrorism Task Force in Detroit, said Sunday's alert was caused by a passenger who "spent a lengthy time in the restroom."

"This raised concerns, so an alert was raised," she said. "JTTF investigated, and the investigation shows that this was a non-serious incident and all is clear at this point."

The passenger spent about an hour in the bathroom and got upset when he was questioned by the crew of the flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, according to government sources. Law enforcement agents questioned the man Sunday.

The jet had the same designation - Flight 253 - as the one on which a Nigerian man is accused of attempting to set off an explosive device Friday, said Scott Wintner, a spokesman for the Wayne County Airport Authority. Winter told CNN the flight "requested emergency assistance and was pulled aside upon arrival in Detroit."

The jet was taken a long distance from the terminal and "completely engulfed" by emergency vehicles and heavily armed police once it landed, said Don Graham, who was waiting for relatives to arrive at the airport.

The flight arrived about 12:34 p.m., said Susan Elliott, a spokeswoman for Delta Air Lines, which owns Northwest. The 257 passengers were allowed to leave the aircraft about an hour after the jet landed, she said.

Another angry Nigerian man. He was probably upset that his fellow Nigerian Muslim butt-bomber failed so badly.

Nigeria is virtually a cash economy, most people don't carry credit cards, which would make these so called experts non starters in issues about Africa.
I feel so ashamed that the culprit is Nigerian, most Nigerians are far from sharing this ideology.

Anyone with 10,000 American dollars can buy a totally genuine visa in Nigeria with your name or someone else's name from Nigerian Govt. officials that are eager to take your money.

One hundred billion taxpayer dollars later, Homeland Security didn't know that?

Common sense tells me you don't give a Muslim a machine gun.

When Osama bin Ladin was fighting the Russian troops in Afghanistan, WAS he on the CIA payroll?

The CIA was heavily involved in training the original Taliban fighters, creating Pakistan's hated ISI agency which is directly modeled after America's CIA.

How about it CNN Investigative Staff, WAS Osama bin Ladin on the CIA payroll during the 1980's?

A. Smith I don't deny their is corruption but what exactly has that got to do with how the guy got his visa. From all the articles available, the guy has spent a great deal of 4 years away from Nigeria.
News report in Nigeria indicate he hardly spent more than a day in Nigeria before taking a flight out. Which indicates to me he already had his traveling documents prior to entering Nigeria.
I am not Muslim but Catholic, but attitudes like yours will only worsen things. Take note in most recent cases The parents and siblings of these culprits have been the ones to tell on them, how many times did this happen during Bushes time.
Obama is doing things the right way, Show understanding while holding the big stick behind you.

This latest act of terror brings up one way of screening people that people don't like talking about . Just screen any body that is Asian looking or in this case this guy was from Yemen...if they are on the list of people to watch and they are of colour or look like their ancentry is form the middle east ...might be a way of narrowing it down....then they will all be diing their hair blond ...I don't think so...people won't like this approach because it is racial profiling and that is not what people like to talk about now a days....For the most part it is a certain race that is involved......can't say it ...but is it true?......darker fellow from Yemen and his father reported him......not hard to check....

Well said. The guy was studying in England.
My question is why did he chose America to vent his hatred?
What hasAamerica done to earn such hatred?.
if it comes to cruelty, Israel has done much worse to the Muslims than any other nations.
Did the FBI, in their investigations, come out with the reason why the terrorists chose America to ignite bombs?
Sure the CIA and FBI have detected the pattern of the terrorism out after interrogating all the suspects since 911.
I honestly thought with Bush gone, the so-called acts of terrorism will be over.
Hi A. Smith. Dude I am glad that the guy is a Nigerian.
If he is Kenyan, that will be a fodder for Obama haters.

America is the greatest country ever, and a fling group can't bare that fact. Truth be told, there are more folks that love America than hate it, deep inside.
I will say this again, I have achieved more in 5 years in America than over two decades of what my country offered me.

To win this war on terror, America needs to tap into its deep well of goodwill it has all over the world. Culturally and socially America fails to see the massive impact it has had on the world.
I was socially American before ever I came here, I listened to RnB, Soul, Jazz, etc, dressed American, and even tried to talk American. So socially their are many socialy Americans all over the world even within this fling.
Obama is playing this right, what the world needs is reassurance and things will start happening. Look at the recored, almost all the recent arrests have been enabled by people reporting siblings , and sons to the Authorities, even the latest one.
This never happened during the Bush era. Ppl know their kids at least won't be tortured or killed while in detention.
Look at Pakistan and the unprecendented moves they have made this past year in actually fighting these terrorists, unlike the Bush era where they just stuffed all the funds from US in private pockets.
We need to play tough but fair.

America will be victorious.
