Adam Lambert Shrugs Off Controversial AMA Act

Posted: 05:40 PM ET

By Michael Y. Park via People

Everyone's aflutter about Adam Lambert's racy performance at the American Music Awards on Sunday – except Adam Lambert.

"I'm not a babysitter, I'm a performer," Lambert, 27, tells Ryan Seacrest in an interview on the latter's Web site, adding, "The spirit of rock and roll is alive and well."

Not on ABC, which apparently didn't approve of Lambert's stage show in which he French-kissed a band member and simulated oral sex. The network has made it clear that Lambert won't be performing on its morning program. It cancelled an appearance on Good Morning America slated for Wednesday after receiving over 1,500 complaints about the Sunday broadcast.

The network says it doesn't feel he'd be appropriate for a morning audience. After the GMA cancellation, CBS asked Lambert to perform on its Early Show on Wednesday instead.

"I think the adrenaline kind of took me over," Lambert tells Seacrest. "I admit and I'm kind of proud of the fact that I did get a little carried away. I had a good time and I was merely interpreting the lyrics of my song. It wasn't meant to piss anyone off, it wasn't meant to hurt anyone or cause any problems."

But the reaction, he says, is far out of proportion to the offense.

"I don't feel like I owe anyone an apology," he says. "I did something female performers have been doing for years. All of a sudden a guy does it, and it's crazy. I do think there's a slight double standard."

His fans seem to agree. On Twitter, the topic #shameonYouABC has been a hot topic since the GMA cancellation was announced, with many fans accusing the network of homophobia and discrimination.

Though he doesn't hold any grudges against the network, Lambert says that at least people have more realistic expectations since his days on a reality-show competition.

"I'm sexual person, and maybe people didn't see that on American Idol," he says. "But now ... they do."

Lora Ottawa Canada   November 24th, 2009 6:53 pm ET

That's right who care...he's a screamer...very irritating!!!!

still me just a new name   November 24th, 2009 8:41 pm ET

Not a fan.

His performance was way to raunchy for television. And his attitude about the whole situation is very arrogant. He did make a good point women have been crossing the line for quite some time. Look at Beyonce, I find Single Ladies very offensive. She's spreading her legs directly in the camera, the bumping the grinding. So he does have a point when he says there is a double standard. BUT Adam Lambert went WAY to far!

I don't like adam lambert. he is all about screaming. his performance was a nightmare to me.

lola   November 24th, 2009 9:41 pm ET

This guy is a disgrace. He is just trying to be as shocking as possible and it isn't working. He'd be fine performing at gay bars and clubs, but not prime time TV during family hour. Absolutely disgusting! Horray for ABC for having the b**ls to tell it like it is. I agree that women have been going too far as well. What these entertainers lack in talent they try to make up for it with raunchy sex antics. I hope this guy crawls back under the rock he came from and good riddance.

I thought it was embarrassingly weak. Vulgarity is nothing new, its so tired and uninspiring. Yawn.

Jennifer   November 24th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

I Feel the same about most of the performances. Soft porn faux dance is such a cop-out now. ITs not pushing the envelope, and I fail to see the creativity. The best performance was Timberland and his dancers, too bad Nelly and the other one had to act stupid as well.

sam   November 24th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

this was not a performance this was gay porn on live tv! including screams from a guy who thinks he is the new Prince in town. he is the male version of lady gaga even though she is not gay. they are both outrageous. also agree with the women going too far with their sexy scenes.

di   November 24th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

sexually provocative act, vulgarity and a lot of screaming is the only way they could sell there albums because they are noooooo way talented at all..all for the money and fame .little that they know they're selling their soul to the devil

Beyonce did not kiss a man on national television, being a man, shes not a man. Besides, lets face it, majority of women are so beatiful and effortless at presenting that beauty that people are usually in awe, but when that mini armageddon did what he did is simply disgusting, and people should put a stop to that movement before it is to late. they should be locked up like criminals if ever should they exhibit themselves in any manner. Im disgusted by those people, yet no one cares to separate them from our society because of political correctness, shame on political correctness. When will the exposure of these people end? Why has it not ended? Long live Bill Clinton for his love and affection for our female counterpart, for his influencing of refusing to let these people into our society.

I loved hem at Idol, but i didnt like the AMA performance...

Kara   November 25th, 2009 10:52 am ET

What ever... it was late in the evening and kids should not have been up at that time anyway... second, performance, so not entertaining and what was he thinking with that song?

Deborah   November 25th, 2009 11:17 am ET

I'm Adam Lambert's brazilian fan. I love him on American Idol and I love him on AMA. His voice is so amazing! People, please, don't judge his performance. He's just a talented artist who wants to work and entertain people.

lola   November 25th, 2009 2:22 pm ET

AMA was came on at 8pm in hour! This guy is disgusting.

Lea   November 25th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

Do you honestly think the producers didn't know what was going to happen? They hinted at his performance all week. Adam is a great talent. If you don't like him, don't watch. I love the fact that Adam just does his thing and shrugs off the critics. I laugh at the tv show that cancelled his act because they lost out on a lot of viewers. Go Adam. You rock 🙂

Vallary   November 25th, 2009 4:37 pm ET

You can be daring and you can be down right nasty. This guy is way better than this. Now true he is keeping his name and face in the media for he has done. and Madonna has been daring to. Give me show, I stay up to see him and I knew they were going to save him until last, and I know why. The show is called American Music Awards, (key word music) no porn. You want to give me shock and awe then sing don't cover up with this kinda of trash.. I don't care if swing both ways guys, girls, don't put in my face

Candice   November 25th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

Why does it take something like this for people to speak up about how the media is becoming to much and this country..Its all about being an exhibitionist these days..Where are the regular people...He did this on a Sunday..I thought Sunday was supposed to be a family day..but then again thats not the way it is anymore..What people don't get is that its not just him...I don't have children but if I did I would not let them watch any tv..Whats on tv these days is what someone else said "soft porn"...When I saw his performance I spit out my soda..and Im an adult..Its gone on too far..not just men..but women too..It needs to stop..Oh but let us talk about ABC..its not an innocent company..its owned by Disney which is pretty much gay owned..So im shocked they spoke up about it..No one is talking about how on one of ABC's shows they tried to push gay marriage down your throat "One life to live"..they had children on there being for it..I don't want these shows to push their political views down my throat..Im honestly sick of tv these days

Karen   December 4th, 2009 12:32 pm ET

Since we are all entitled to our opinion; I thought his performance was lousy vocally, disgusting, raunchy, and it is evident that he has no taste or class.. There was no warmth or connection to his audience, but rather it seemed he was up there only to prove his point'. Immaturity, insecurity, and stupidity, are a dangerous combination. GET THE CANE OUT AND YANK HIM BACK TO OLD BROADWAY!!!! In addition, I thought that it was very arrogant of him to 'compare' himself to Michael Jackson at the 'This is It' Movie Premiere... please! Don't insult our beloved MJ!!!!
