"So You Think You Can Dance" Star Reveals Shocking Story of Abuse

Posted: 02:51 PM ET

1255533997_mary-murphy-290NOTE: "So You Think You Can Dance" judge Mary Murphy will be our guest on LKL tonight.

via UsMagazine.com

In the new issue of Us Weekly (on newsstands now), So You Think You Can Dance judge Mary Murphy opens up for the first time ever about surviving a nine-year abusive relationship, during which she was repeatedly raped and beaten and suffered a miscarriage.

She tells Us Weekly her ex-husband – whose name is being withheld but who says Murphy's claims are "flat-out lies" – raped her for the first time three months after they wed.

"We'd had another jealous fight, screaming, crashing over furniture, and he said, 'I want to have sex,'" Murphy, 51, tells Us Weekly. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me?! We're fighting here!' He said, 'You're my wife, and you'll do what I tell you!' I pulled out a kitchen knife and screamed, 'You're going to have to stab me, because I'm not having sex with you!' He knocked it out of my hands, held me down and raped me."

Her story follows the standard abuse pattern. I am curious if he gave her gifts after the beatings? That's what mine did.

Thanks. Susan Moore

It's the new trend in America.

Get semi-famous, claim you were raped or involved in an incestuois relationship then write a book and have all the "MORONIC IDIOTS" buy your book and get rich on the proceeds.

Lisa   October 20th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Mary, I am a professional woman and have found myself in the same situation as you. It is very devistating ,hard to leave, and is so hard to overcome emotionally. My sister is now dealing with a similiar situation.Every time another woman tells her story he helps us get one step closer to leaving physically or emotionally. Thank you so much for your courage!

SuzieCanada   October 20th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Exactly Gerald Jolly! I am so sick of hearing about all the dirty secrets of these "celebrities". Just keep them to yourselves people. I'm not interested and certainly not going to contribute to making any of these degenerates rich.

Angelgirl   October 20th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Mary;

I experienced a very simular story but faced death with a chainsaw beinging chased in front of my children as the police arrived again from a Lebananese (from Beiruit) as you.

I too hide for many reasons, fear of him finding me, and strong & suspicious to the World Trade Center's 1st bombing that I reported to our FBI who was very interested in the information and contacted me for more information during their investigation. He was a very dangerous man that believed he owned me and could do whatever he wanted to me.

I am sorry you had to experience this ordeal as I remember the terror as if it was yesterday.

Hope he never locates you as I know things about this culture from experience and many of them can be dangerous from my personal experience. His whole family was like this. Even his mother came over here to visit and it was obvious she was beaten down and not only her husband she feared but also her adult sons!

Thanks for speaking out and being braver than I.

While I wasn't there and did not personally witness any of the abuse Mary Murphy is alleging her ex-husband carried out against her, I suspect the husband, despite his denials, did what he is accused of. I can see no realistic reason for Mary to make these allegations unless they really happened. While some of the above seem to believe that it is for notoriety or future book income, I find that highly unlikely. As for Gerald Jolly, I have been seeing his comments recently and he habitually comes up with the most outrageous scenarios and then complains because, he says the folks monitoring this blog cut him out. I suspect he enjoys playing the devils advocate and saying the most outlandish things just to see what kind of a reaction he can get out of it. Similar to the firebug who sets a fire and then hangs around to watch the excitement.

Just curious but is Mary of oriental ancestry? She doesn't look like a Murphy to this tired old irishman.

Angelgirl   October 20th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Gerald;

if you don't have this type of experience as many American women then keep your feelings to yourself. She has empowered many of us that lived and live these lives at the hands of these foreigner's & even American men!

Hope you can research into this fear women carry and are beginning to speak out to other women.

Respectively,

Angelgirl

SusieCanada;

You have a choice whether you watch or read these stories...or don't !

No one is forcing you to. Keep your head in the sand or learn about the content before you judge it.

Gerald Jolly   October 20th, 2009 11:19 pm ET

Why is it the every time this kind of story comes out, that all of a sudden molested women come out of the woodwork.

There is no doubt that many women are molested by their mates.

What I need to know is "WHY DO THEY KEEP RETURNING TO THEIR MOLESTER"

What is that all about??
Are they all reading the BIBLE that tells us to turn the other cheek??

I'm sorry, but I dont understand why any person would run back to the person that is abusing her.

Is it perhaps because they dont know about calling 911?

For every genuine case of women being battered by their spouse, there is ten where the women cries wolf only as a means of getting attention and pity or scaring the beejesus of her spouse so she can ultimately get her way.

I dont say that Dr. Phil is the ultimate person to give advise on this matter, but if you watch his program you will see time and time again where the woman in this scenario is in fact the culprit.

In my final analysis, if Mary Murphy was raped and abused repeatedly some "NINE" years ago, why on earth did she wait till now to disclose it now, just when he book is being released.

GEEEEZZZZ! DO THE MATH FOLKS, Its just a little to obvious would'nt you say????

Angelgirl   October 20th, 2009 11:29 pm ET

OH MY GERALD JOLLY!

You sound like you don't like women? I pray you would support a female victim if you ever knew one .... especially someone near or close to you.

Carol   October 21st, 2009 12:54 am ET

Gerald......1 out of 3 girls is sexually abused by age 18 and most never come out of the "woodwork". More than likely cuz of men/attitudes such as yours. Time and time again, the woman is the the culprit? Really???? Here's a website, by a man, for you to maybe, possibly grasp some facts about personal violence. You are an "a" hole. jacksonkatz.com

JULIE   October 21st, 2009 1:17 am ET

This story amazed and shocked me to my core. What Mary endured was exactly what I lived through for half my life w/my ex also. Everything She said hit me like a ton of bricks&brought back horrible memories. I am happy that She has worked through them like she has. I , however, still haven't. No amount of therapy has been able to help. I have nightmares nightly & can't seem to forget. I wish there was a magic pill that could erase these horrid memories , forever. My Parents were both deceased , so I had no Family to turn to and He kept me alienated from anyone who took an interest in helping me. I have my life back now, thankfully but , I wonder if I'll ever forget &forgive what this controlling Monster took from Me.

justme   October 21st, 2009 1:45 am ET

Thank you for sharing your truth Mary and showing incredible strength. When our pasts holds "secrets" it is like a slow poison to our soul and our lives. Congratulations on letting go of secrets. It is not for sympathy or celebrity but to set yourself free and to move forward. His secrets are not yours to keep.

First there was the Octamom, then J+K + 8. Now there is the Duggar Family.18 kids and the 19th on the way. Parents-Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar. Bible Thumpers and live in a house that looks like a Cracker Barrel Restaurant. Of course they are home schooled and their dining room is a cafeteria. Mystery Meat is now for lunch in yo own home!
One of their sons,Josh just got married to this girl named Anna. She waited to kiss him on her wedding day and she was pictured wearing her "Wholesome Clothing" to para sail in Myrtle Beach. The Farthest Thing From A Thong!!
They also just had a baby and have said that just like Josh's parents say...they will have as many kids as their holy God will give them..
O.K....I know way too much about these folks but they are just wild to watch. Hands Down they beat any reality TV show out there!
Please interview them. At the very least you will get an extra boost in ratings from every Right Winger/Bible Thumper/ Multi Children Family Fan. Not to mention me and all of my peeps !
Thanks...Your'e the Best!

Bobby   October 21st, 2009 4:15 am ET

Why does the rich and famous wait to tell there story?I guess bad new and bad family means more money.Jerry springer of the rich and abused..Ding Ding!!!!!!what a cry for attention....wonder if this is what the men and women that died for are freedom wanted!!!!

Donald McMunn   October 21st, 2009 6:09 am ET

This is a typical Muslim who treats women like they are property, and treat them worse than they would a cow or sheep. What really puzzles me is why Larry King has given this scumbag that Mary was married to anonymity, and even listened to that lying Muddle Eastern halfwit.

ckelly   October 21st, 2009 9:49 am ET

Captain Joe Black-You don't get out much do you?

As a clinical therapist, I appreciate that show's like Larry King and Oprah, Dr. Phil and other's shine some light on the dark secret of domestic violence. Its not talked about enough-If it was talked about enough -there would be a lot less of it!!

It took a lot of courage for Mary Murphy to talk on the program and I could tell that this was a very personal experience-one that was hurtful to her to talk about. Anytime a person, celebrity or not, talks about these kinds of personal experiences-they open themselves up to criticism. In other words, she didn't have to talk about it. People in the dance community would have bought her book irregardless of her disclosure.

But like domestic violence, abusers hide in the shadows, afraid that the light may shine on them.

diane   October 21st, 2009 11:58 am ET

The woman is disgusting and obviously a publicity hound...if I had to listen to that obnoxious laugh every day, I would smack her too.

lola   October 21st, 2009 12:19 pm ET

Gerald Jolly is correct. Wake up people! How many magazine covers did Mary Murphy have before she made these allegations????? NONE. I rest my case.

SuzieCanada   October 21st, 2009 5:17 pm ET

Angelgirl, I watch and read what I want, not what you tell me to. Go ahead and buy her book or whatever she's selling if you like Keep the money going for these poor "celebrities" and they'll keeping coming up with new stories for you.

benny jacob   October 22nd, 2009 7:08 am ET

In this media-dominated generation, we are all suspicious of hidden agenda's of human heart. we all love truth of our inner most being rather than just as is seen on the outside..that is what people like Gerald Jolly
want to know ...why mary is saying IN SUCH A SITUATION? ...truly there are people who think like what gerald accused mary to be....Also we take note of that other victims of same abuse support mary ...let the truth reign...

Ted   October 22nd, 2009 9:34 am ET

Gerald Jolly,
this time I agree with you!! Every time one of these women wants to sell a book, they get on LKL and tell their sad stories and the suckers weep and run to buy the book. Larry is losing his touch, his show is becoming a third rate boulevard show.
As far as Mary goes, you make a good first impression, however when you open your mouth and let that obnoxios laugh lose that sounds like a live pig on the roast, then I can understand your husband. It takes a saint not to smack you one.

benny jacob   October 23rd, 2009 8:21 am ET

Those who criticize mary forgot one fact.....whether such disclosure do any good to future victims of such abuse.....in this fun-loving society many adults are filled with hidden passion of dangerous kinds of fun- experiments...in mary"s case ...that man is experimenting with the principle..... "stolen water is sweeter"....if such programs pronounce the truth that stole water may be sweeter for some time ...then it is going to the sorest later..........which is proven in this case for the man who committed it....considering it , i must appreciate larry king.
