Liz Cheney launches group to oppose Obama's "radical" policies

Posted: 11:20 AM ET

By Ben Smith via Politico

Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s eldest daughter Liz will launch a new group aimed at rallying opposition to the “radical” foreign policy of the Obama administration which it says has succeeded only in undermining the nation’s security.

The new group, Keep America Safe, will make the case against President Barack Obama’s moves to wrench America away from Bush era foreign policy on issues from detaining alleged terrorists at Guantanamo Bay to building a missile shield in Eastern Europe.

“The policies being proposed by the Obama administration are so radical across the board,” Cheney said. “Whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat, you want the nation to be strong and so many steps this president is taking are making the nation weaker.”

The new group will add institutional heft to a scathing critique of Obama articulated first and loudest by Liz Cheney’s father, and fills a void left by a Republican Party made skittish by the Iraq War, and apparently more eager to engage the president on domestic issues like health care. Its formation marks the end of an unusual partisan truce on America’s central national security challenge, Afghanistan, and after a presidential campaign in which Obama and Republican John McCain agreed on many security issues from Central Asia to Guantanamo Bay.

Has she lost her marbles?

Anne   October 13th, 2009 11:47 am ET

She should call it the US branch of Taliban al Qaeda United.

Jeri   October 13th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

After the immense damage caused by her father to the U. S. Liz Cheney is not in any position to criticise Pres. Obama. On her last appearance on LKL, Liz Cheney spoke many, many lies about health care. She is just the continuing voice of a man (Cheney) who lost respect with Americans a long time ago. Pres. Obama is trying to fix the mess left behind by Bush/Cheney's policies. Liz needs to shut up and admit to her father's evil deeds rather than launching this stupid group.

Ted   October 13th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

I think a great part of our nation lost their marbles. We have great financial problems, the dollar keeps losing its value against all currencies, we owe billions to the Chines, yet they have nothing to do, but bash our President.
Liz, you want a missile shield in Eastern Europe! Did you ever ask those people living there if they want your missiles in their country?
What would you say if they recommend putting those ugly things in your own backyard?
Those hundreds of millions would be better used to pay of a small part of the national debt.

The world is tired of the USA defending itself in other countries, you Liz, be patriotic and donate your own property. Besides, we already have hundreds of missiles in several NATO countries perfectly capable to stop any such attack.
This idea was from Bush who tried to guarantee millions of profits to the manufacturers of those missile sets, good friends of Cheney and Bush. By the way, Liz, how much did your father profit from all those contracts he placed by friendly defense contractors?
I would be happy with 5% of it.

Ted   October 13th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

Liz, are you the muff diver of the Cheney family?

Rose   October 13th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

Right on Ted. Dick Cheney made hundreds of millions of dollars (via his company Halliburton) as an Iraq war profiteer. Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld and others ensured their weapon manufacturer investors received billion$ in return. His shameless daughter Liz can find her lost marbles firmly lodged under her father's greedy ass.

What's the matter Liz? Are you annoyed at Obama turning off your family's cash flow by pursuing more peaceful and less destructive methods – radical is it? Go roll around in your father's money that is blood stained with our young American soldiers' blood.

Swastika carved into green at Lakeville golf course with the name OBAMA

The first black president was great leap for the US in race war but it also has brought out those who have hidden their prejudice and who still have a deep hatred for minority. Recently there has been a resurrection of prejudice in our society. This is fueled by a the frustrated republicans who will stop at nothing when attacking President OBama. It sad that such a great victory against prejudice is being attacked in such a way. It's one thing when you attack a president on his policies but it's pure hatred when you attack using method illustrated above.

John

Michael C. McHugh   October 13th, 2009 1:39 pm ET

Dick and Liz Cheney are radicals too–just on the Radical Right.

It's normal for the Republicans to play the Wimp Card on Dems in foreign policy. Everything is political to them, and we on the progressive side have to think the same way.

I am one of the few progressives who still supports the war in Afghanistan because I have been in that part of the world and seen the enemy myself. Nevertheless, i don't trust the Republicans on this issue, and have always thought they'd like to sucker Obama into a long conventional war–a quagmire–all the better to attack him later.

Michael C. McHugh   October 13th, 2009 1:42 pm ET

PS Obama's policies are no more "radical" than the detente of Nixon-Kissinger. We are no longer strong enough to be the Great Superpower of 1945 and boss the rest of the world around. We have many social and economic problems at home that were neglected during the Second Gilded Age of the last 30 years and must be dealt with NOW or we will go under.

Today, we are just one power among many in a multi-polar world and have to accept out limits–military, economic and political.

eJay   October 13th, 2009 2:15 pm ET

Has she forgotten that the last administration is what destroyed America's status in the world. Now she wants the teabaggers to go global.

DeMarques Taylor   October 13th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

I dont understand how Liz Cheney is trying to come up with a foreign policy plan that was similar to George Bush's. In my opinion, it is clear to see that George Bush's foreign policy did not work. I Do not believe there is anything wrong with President Obama's foreign policy. I think Obama's foreign policy plan will be quite successful because I feel it is going to make our nation strong and give us other benefits such as bringing more troops back to the U.S.

LacrosseMom   October 13th, 2009 7:16 pm ET

Cheney, is an idiot. I will be thrilled the day DICK & Bush are brought up on War Crimes charges! The ONLY reason anyone is giving this woman press is that she is a Cheney.

Bush/DICK Regime will go down in history as the biggest disaster our Nation has faced since the Great Depression.

alex lyrics   October 13th, 2009 7:34 pm ET

Cheney has been quiet as a spider on the wall sense Obama/Biden shut his a"'ss up with threat of indictment for war crimes, and now he sends his daughter to open her big mouth with garbage.

alex lyrics   October 13th, 2009 7:37 pm ET

Let us not forget that Cheney's companies have financial interest in keeping the war going in both Afganistan, as well as Iraq

geo   October 13th, 2009 8:52 pm ET

Lynn Cheney is an alcoholic ..

Dodie ~ California   October 13th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

@ Cali MJ Fan and Ted!

Liz Never had any Marbles to lose!

What Liz is afraid of losing is all the billions of dollars her father made off us Americans through striking deals with governments of specific countries.

chaney   October 13th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

What compels Liz Chaney to think that we want to hear her venom... Dick Cheney is a war profiteer, he makes lots of money on the spoils of war........ I thought when President Obama was elected with his smart quiet dignity, the Cheneys would have the good sense to disappear into civilian life...... and write memoirs or something, but nooooooooooooooooooooo.,. I dont want to hear anything she has to say ......period.......

Anthony   October 13th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

Anyone who supports Liz on her attack on President Obama, most likely would be a Tea Party member or of her father's supporters who's benifited from the war in Iraq. What a shame,The father couldn't even be honest with his own daugther.

James31   October 13th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

DODIE – VP Cheney donated all the money he made from his position prior to being VP to charity. You need to get your facts straight; once again you just swipe that broad brush across the screen.

Clause   October 13th, 2009 9:46 pm ET

Liz Chaney is very bright and articulate. It's unfortunate that people are so biased that they cannot acknowledge that about her. Maybe they are the ones with no marbles.

Dodie ~ California   October 13th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

If the USA did not look so stupid to the rest of the world, I could see this as very humorous.

Scenario: President Obama receives the Nobel Peace Prize from an "international committee" for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between the USA and other countries.

Then you hear the extremists from the religious cult right wing group including Liz Cheney who ridicule President Obama. Do you know how that looks to the rest of the world??? Like there are a bunch of crazy stupid Americans in this country!

Here is a typical quote from a Chinese citizen in China on CCTV. " So touching! I approve! I continuously supported him and he did not let me down! So much personal charm! I hope he can really help bring change to America, and also peacefully coexist with us, China, giving the world positive change!"

How can people from other countries see this as positive while Liz and her gang only see it as negative????? This speaks Huge amounts about the USA.

Dodie ~ California   October 13th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

@ James31

And you have no idea how much Cheney made from us Americans!!! I am sure stashed in off-shore accounts in multiple of names. No one really knows!

kenny   October 13th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

hard to believe,,Dick Cheney had 5 deferrments to that he would not go to war ...he does not care if the 2 wars end...he's very wealthy...the rest of us want the 2 wars to end..we're having a diff. time financially ...

Rose   October 14th, 2009 9:59 am ET

Clause: Liz Cheney has willfully participated in the spread of lies concerning the past Bush Administration, her father, health care etc. How does that make her so bright? She is just another mouth out there using her position and abilities for negative purposes. People are not biased – they see her clearly for what she is and it's not impressive to say the least. That's not biase, that's calling the shots as they are.

Ted   October 14th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Rose and Dodie,
it is great to hear voices like yours, I wish we had millions who would say their minds. We were subjugated too long under the born again christian minority, who clutch the bible in one hand and pull the trigger with the other one. To me Christinaty is something entirely different.

We should take the country back and make sure brain and experience rules it, not bigotry and hate.
In my opinion insulting the President by calling him demeaning names and using Hitler likeness and swastica should be a crime. It goes way beyond of free speach and any private person would sue the propagator.

Ted   October 14th, 2009 11:47 am ET

Michael C. McHugh,

if those poor bastards in Afghanistan are our enemies then it is our own making!!
We built up and armed the Muhajedin so they can fight the sovjet invadors. In other words they did a proxi war for us. After the sovjets left they set up a goverment the way they like it, however we did not like the type of government and started bombing their villages.
You and I may not like their backward system, however it is their country, not ours, and they have the right to live the way they want.
If we preach democracy then we should also practice it!!

The 9/11 attackers of Al Queda all came from Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jemen, friendly arab nations and our allies, and not a single of them from Afghanistan. Bin Laden fled to that country and we found it opportune to hit them hard for something that they had nothing to do with.

If we find that for taking in Bin Laden they deserve to be bombed, then watch out. The USA is harboring a whole bunch of bloody dictators who had to flee for their lives.
Using our on policy, all those countries have now the right to bomb our towns, our wedding parties and call every men, women and children the enemy, as you do Michael.

Rose   October 14th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

Ted you are correct. There is also the issue of the build-up of American military presence in Afghanistan. Permanent bases are being set up. Afghanistan's geographical location is very strategic as it's very close to 3 main world basins of hydrocarbons: Persian Gulf, Caspian Sea and Central Asia. Russia views this as a potential threat.

US military presence in Afghanistan strengthens US position in the region to counter the alliance between India, China and Russia. Afghanistan also holds strategic significance re: its border with Iran.

We are bombing an entire country under the pretext of "hunting for Bin Laden" – for 8 years. Afghani civilians have suffered immensely. Thousands of men, women and children have died via American weapons. Afghanistan is not a "country" per se. It is a number of provinces run by ethnic tribesmen. The Taliban is associated with Bin Laden.

The American excuse of looking for the big, bad terrorists only appeals to the ignorant and simple minded. The US needs to be truthful about what it is doing there. The build up of bases, with the US as intruders, as well as the ambitions of a pipeline from the Caspian speaks volumes.

Rose   October 14th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Anyone who is interested – Google: Right Wing Christian Dictionary. It's funny, smart and unfortunately accurate.

ann   October 14th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

Dodie–how much did Cheney hide in off-shore accounts. Isn't it just that you cannot bring yourself to say anything positive about anyone who thinks a little differently that you? Whether I agree with Liz Cheney or not, I acknowledge that she is a very intelligent woman.

Ted   October 15th, 2009 10:01 am ET

ann,
so was Hitler, Stalin, Dgingis Khan, Mussolini and most bloody despots of this world. They got to power because they were intelligent and ruthless, caring for nothing, but themselves.
Shall we sing a hymn for their glory?

Rose   October 15th, 2009 10:25 am ET

Ann: There are people who think differently, and then there are people who are liars with only self-interest in mind. Many so-called intelligent people were behind the financial scams and corruptions that we are witnessing. They hurt a lot of "average" people. It's the same "intelligence" that can be used to manipulate politics in order to wield power toward a certain direction.

There is no doubt that Dick Cheney profitted excessively from the Iraq war. Money made from lies, war and deaths of thousands of young Americans is not worth making – regardless of that money's final destination or use. It's both immoral and fraudulent. Liz Cheney is an extension of her father.
