Study: More cases of autism in U.S. kids than previously realized

Posted: 07:49 AM ET

A study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics indicates about 1 percent of children ages 3 to 17 have autism or a related disorder, an increase over previous estimates.

"This is a significant issue that needs immediate attention," Dr. Ileana Arias, deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday. "A concerted effort and substantial national response is warranted."

The study used data from the federal government's 2007 national survey of children's health. The survey of parents was conducted by the Health Resources and Services Administration, and by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The results are based on a national telephone survey of more than 78,000 parents of children ages 3 to 17.

In the study, parents were asked whether a health care provider had ever told them their child had an autism spectrum disorder. ASD is a group of brain disorders comprising autism and two less severe disorders: Asperger's disorder and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified.

Children with the disorder show impairment in social interaction and in their ability to communicate. They often display repetitive behavior.

I'm wondering if it's the shots.
Years ago in the 40s and 50s kids didn't get alot of shots although thousands were crippled by polio
In the 60s and 70s babies were given one shot each month till they reach 1 year old.
Today they are given mulit meds in one shot which could be too much for their little bodies.

Although Autism has been studied for years it still is a mystery. Ones have stated that it's gene related. If so could it had been pass on from a parent or grandparent that went to war.Sounds kind of stupid but might have happen.Look what happen with Agent Orange
A panel of scientists had stated there is some evidence of a link between a soldier's exposure to the herbicide Agent Orange during the Vietnam War and his children's risk for a specific form of cancer.
Nine diseases, including lung cancer and prostate cancer, are on the list. Adult-onset diabetes is about to be added. The one other childhood condition is spina bifida, a birth defect that sometimes causes paralysis.

These scientists are unsure about who,why certain kids have it.

I worked as a developmental therapist (provided services to children and families with mental and physical handicaps, developmental delays etc), in the 80's in rural Ontario, Canada.

I saw everything-very rare auto-immune disorders, genetic syndromes (downs, praderwillie, williams syndrome, ADHD) physical disorders like Cerebral Palsy , Spina Bifida, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Autism ie Asbergers Syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD).

TRUE Autism, Asbergers and even PDD in children was rare relative to the other types of disorders that came to us for help in the 1980's and early 1990's.

The fact that it is now diagnosed as 1% of the population just blows my mind.

I believe that part of the problem lies in its diagnosis. The checklist and hallmark characteristics of the disorder are vague and general in many cases-If we don't know what it is: It likely falls in the Autism spectrum. They say we are just diagnosing more accurately-I am not so sure.

Secondly, in Canada anyway-most funding resources and respite services over the last ten years or so have gone to programs for children with Autism. So if you need support, your doctor may be more inclined to give your child the diagnosis of Autistic spectrum disorder.

Since special schools and residential programs for children with general mental retardation and developmental handicaps have closed in Canada (I am presuming the US too): No one wants to admit they have a child with mental retardation or significant mental handicap. To be Autistic or to be diagnosed with Asbergers is a much better label. It implies a mysterious unknown condition increasing in numbers-we have more in common with other families.

Parents today often have terrible diets, lifestyle habits, drug and alcohol problems that are not openly discussed with physicians. Or they forget their pre-natal history. Many kids who meet the criteria for Autism,( usually diagnosed three or more years after conception) also meet the criteria for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Narcotics syndrome.
Childhood trauma and parental mental health problems and addictions also are under reported. These factors, especially trauma are scientifically validated as contributing to attachment disorders and other mental health problems-which may look like Autism.

Personality traits and general mental health conditions are also not properly diagnosed (anxiety disorders, early indicators for youth onset schizophrenia and oppositional definant disorders; severe ADHD and Anxiety,ie Tourettes, OCD). Usually, many parents are alerted to problem behaviors in the schools (often over crowed) and its the behaviors themselves that force parents in to the doctors office for some sort of medication to keep the child in the classroom. More and more kids with severe ADHD, who can not cope in class or who respond poorly to medication are diagnosed with Autism. Children with learning disabilities also fall into this category.

Parents and children lead over stimulated lives. The child's brain is very vulnerable to noise, rock music, smoke, televison, loud noises and lack of routine. More and more parents have busy stressful lives and plunk their children down in front of the television set or infront of a video game-take them routinely to fast food outlets, plunk them in daycare, move all the time, have different and numerous unstable relationships and are generally not emotionally or psychologically available to their children. With the rise of overworked, highly stress single parents or parents in general-we also have the increase of Autism cases.

Toxins in the environment-pollution, cleaning products, over chlorinated water, scientifically modified vegetables, microwavable food; antibiotics and chemicals in meat and dairy products also affect children's health and brain development

And yes finally inoculations.

How is it NOT possible that an increase in inoculations and flu shots etc isn't causal in some brain damaged/disordered kids?

I predict there will be an increase in the numbers of children diagnosed with "Autism" unless these issues are not addressed honestly and openly.

Could this truly be caused by the amount and kind of immunizations?

I believe Autism and Asbergers is a combination of nature vs nurturer. I think it is a combination of a genetic chromosome along with toxins in the environment. Because of population explosion and increase in environmental toxins, this will cause a big increase of this disease!
