NEW YORK — New York's iconic Empire State Building will light up red and yellow Wednesday in honor of the 60th anniversary of communist China.

The Chinese consul, Peng Keyu, and other officials will take part in the lighting ceremony which will bathe the skyscraper in the colors of the People's Republic until Thursday, Empire State Building representatives said in a statement.

The upper sections of the building are regularly illuminated to mark special occasions, ranging from all blue to mark "Old Blue Eyes" Frank Sinatra's death in 1998 to green for the annual Saint Patrick's Day.

"Two thumbs up for the People’s Republic of China! A wonderful people and a country we could learn from!

This is another example of how misguided we are (Empire State Building representatives), as we honor a corrupt, civil rights abusing totalitarian regime. Good Job.

Our country has sure been kissing a lot of butt lately.

Could we "light up" for Michael Jackson Day then ?

Why is a United States landmark celebrating a monumental date for a country other than our own? The building has nothing to do with China. Honestly, what is the rationale behind it, because it makes no sense whatsoever.

I don't understand–why? Does China light up one of its Landmarks with our colors–on July 4th?--give me a break

Mark My Words   September 29th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

gord – you are one of those who think that somehow America wouldn't exist without some sort of ethic group. Don't be so naive.

China has a horrific human rights record. We cannot be blinded by its material advances with total disregard to human beings. The brutal and oppressive generals of Burma (Myanmar) continue to hold power against its own people's desire for democracy. They do this due to China's support of them by depleting Burma's oil and natural gas reserves and rewarding the totalitarian Generals. No one will lift a finger to help the Burmese due to Chinese influence.

There is no honor in lighting up the Empire States Building. Splashing it will red blood would be more accurate coloring.

The US owes China about two trillion dollars in debt. That would explain the light show to "honor" China in New York on Wednesday.

California could create its own money by making it good only in the state of California and exchangeable with the dollar in California. Since the Federal Government has a stupid money policy, there is no need for California to be broke when money is only a medium of exchange for good an service. California could withdraw from the United States and become a new country. It could then create its own money supply like 191 other countries– which would be good anywhere in the world. This would get the USA of the off of a gold standard mentality.

Article 1, Section 8, Constitution gives the Federal Government the power to keep a balanced money supply. New money should be made available to all the states without any matching funds required for creating jobs and funding new businesses which produces new jobs. Goods and services have real value. Money is only numbers on a computer chip which exchanges goods and services.
