Patrick Swayze Loses Battle With Cancer

Posted: 10:37 PM ET

Note: we will be remembering Patrick Swayze Tuesday night on a special Larry King Live.

art.swayze.giLOS ANGELES, California (CNN) - Patrick Swayze, whose good looks and sympathetic performances in films such as "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghost" made him a romantic idol to millions, died Monday. He was 57.

Swayze died of pancreatic cancer, his publicist, Annett Wolf, told CNN.

Swayze's doctor, Dr. George Fisher, revealed in early March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from the disease.

"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," Wolf said in a statement Monday.

Most recently, Swayze starred in A&E Network's "The Beast," which debuted in January. He agreed to take the starring role of an undercover FBI agent before his diagnosis.

The network agreed to shoot an entire season of the show after Swayze responded well to his cancer treatment

Patrick Swayze is such a tremendous memory in our generation with his movies. His comedic skit with Chris Farley on SNL, role in Ghost with Demi and Whoopi, Road House, Point Break, and of course his graceful dancing talent from his mother shines in Dirty Dancing are my all time favorites. What a beautiful smile and twinkling eyes. He will be greatly missed. Our prayers are with his famiily and loved ones.

This was the last news I thought I would see tonight when I booted up my computer. So sad....everytime "Dirty Dancing" or "Ghost" comes on TV, I am hooked right away and it takes me bacvk to the first time I watched them and how my mom shut Dirty Dancing off when she found me and my friends watching it when it first came out on VHS! We were in grade 7 😉 . Will always remember the joy those movies & soundtracks bring time after time.

Rest in Peace ❤

We heard of Patrick's illness, and cancer is still a major problem in the world. So many have to die from the disease. I loved Patrick to see acting, mainly in Ghost. May God bless him.

Teresa   September 15th, 2009 9:49 am ET

The year of 2009 has been an extremely bad year..cancer has taken many to their graves even my own young pet cat who also died of this evil disease last month! Look at Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, Dominick Dunne, Army Archerd, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Patirck Swayze, and many more. I wish there would be some permanent cure for cancer so we don't lose anymore lives.

Vallary   September 15th, 2009 10:04 am ET

What a nice man. and great movies,, everybody wanted to be the Baby in the corner. When he came in the door. Surely missed.

Sheletta   September 15th, 2009 10:11 am ET

Patrick S. will be missed, I've love his movies, such as Dirty Dancing (my special collection), Ghost – He played this Very Well, and Road House – as a bouncer he was great in that one too. I've even watch his A & E Series, and that is when I notice how small and thin he had gotten. Now, I know the reason why. Actually, when I saw him in this series I thought whatever he was going through that he had gotten better, guess I was wrong. I will miss seeing him playing more movies, he was a really great actor that when the camera was aim at him you gave all your attention to watching what he would do next. RIP Patrick you will be missed.

Raychil   September 15th, 2009 10:33 am ET

Rest in peace, Patrick.

Jessie from Auckland, NZ   September 15th, 2009 10:43 am ET

A Gentleman at peace now.

Jessie from Auckland, NZ   September 15th, 2009 10:49 am ET

Yes, we lost our cat in February of this year too. He was almost 15 years old, and I wonder if we'll ever get over losing him. He was almost human. I still cry when I think of him.

Stu,Hungary   September 15th, 2009 10:57 am ET

And what about the Road disco?I loved that movies...Nobody say a word about it.

Oluwatoyin. M   September 15th, 2009 11:10 am ET

Did he have any issue at all? Because they never mention one, very bad, l felt for him. May his gentle soul find peace with the lord. Anyway, l am very sure he is still with us, he also have let us know that through his film (Ghost). May God be with his wife and mum.

cherubijne, The Netherlands   September 15th, 2009 11:25 am ET

He was a great actor:
North and South, he was a hero for me in that time...Dirty Dancing and Ghost.
In the last years of his life, in my opinion, he looked like his older brother.

Rest in peace

With love

Teresa   September 15th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

To Jessie from Auckland, NZ–Yes, even if it is a pet dying who was suddenly diagnosed with end stages of cancer and you paid alot of money to get the best medical care for him and still lose him, it is so very painful. I had my young cat since he was a little stray kitten who just wandered in my front yard on a very cold rainy day who grew up as the most affectionate kitty. He loved to just jump on my lap and put his paws around your neck to give me a tight hug. He also loved for me to cradle him like a baby on my lap before he falls to sleep. I hope someday we'll find a cure for this wicked cancer to save the lives of people and animals. When we lose someone (pet or a loved one) , it is a very horrendous experience.

Luckily, Patrick Swayze was given a chance to live 20 months longer whereas the late actor Michael Landon (Little House on the Prairie and Bonanza) only lived a few months before death claimed him. I pray his wife and mom will pull through this painful ordeal and they will in time.

Cindy   September 15th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

RIP Patrick. Much of your beautiful work will last forever. We were lucky to of had you for the short time we did. My favorite movies of all time are Ghost and Dirty Dancing and there is no doubt that those movies will always be loved and enjoyed. Patrick you HAD THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE and You Will Take The Love With You (lots of it) and we thank you for it.

Deb P Lafayette, IN   September 15th, 2009 12:50 pm ET

I went to sleep with tears in my eyes last night after hearing that Patrick Swayzee had passed.
My heart goes out to Lisa, I hope her pain is eased quickly and she finds eventual peace that now he has no pain.
A line from ""Ghost"" helped get me throught the recent loss of my mom and maybe it will help some of us with the tragic loss of is ..."All the love inside, you get to take it with you". I am so hoping this is true, believing he left us with all our love.
He was such an amazing talent on screen and an incredible dancer, and appears that he was a good man and a loving husband. He will be terribly missed not only for those things, but we can smile and say he was a pretty nice bit of eye candy as well.
Rest in Peace Patrick.
You are Loved

Sory, not Road disco, but Road hous.Nobody talk about it,but it was a cool movie!

Jean   September 15th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

Patrick Swayze was one of my favorite all time actors. I have been following the news reports and I have not heard anything at all mentioned about his starring in the miniseries North and South. This is when I first saw the young and talented Patrick Swayze and have followed his career ever since. Please give him credit for that great mini series. Rest in peace Patrick.

Nurse   September 15th, 2009 4:47 pm ET

I loved PS in North and South but my favorite was Dirty Dancing.

FYI PS was an admitted alcoholic and chain smoker. Either one could lead to pancreatic cancer.

Jacquelyn   September 15th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

We seem to be losing everyone this year.

Dirty Dancing and To Wong Foo were the best to me.

Honorine   September 15th, 2009 6:19 pm ET

Patrick Swayze was a fighter.

Terrie   September 15th, 2009 7:23 pm ET

Patrick Swayze was too young to go..only 57 years old. I feel for his widow, mother, and the rest of the family. It is not easy to watch someone dying painfully and slowly of cancer and I do have tremendous respect for Patrick Swayze's widow for being so courageous to be by his side to the end.

Patrick Swayze's spirit has left his sick body and now is a very healthy man who is no longer suffering. God finally called him Home...God saw Patrick has suffered enough and took him to a much better place.   September 15th, 2009 9:00 pm ET

But, what is the point in electing more democrats in 2010 if
the devil damn democrats we now have do not have the guts
to pass some kind of health-care bill; and maybe we should be
thinking Clinton for 2012. Just trying is not good enough, Mr. President.

Anne   September 15th, 2009 9:45 pm ET

Patrick was superb in the 1980's miniseries North and South! I haven't seen any mention of this wonderful work in all of the coverage of his life's work. May God be with you and your family. You will be missed.

shelley   September 15th, 2009 9:59 pm ET

I want to say Patrick was a very special man even not knowing him. He fought the fight with his battle with cancer and is now in heaven with God and the Angels. My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife, Lisa and his mother. God bless you all for taking such good care of him.

Denise   September 16th, 2009 12:30 am ET

Patrick Swayze lived life to the fullest.! Just this past year I lost my
mother and aunt both to stage 2 pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, they both died within 3 months after their diagnoses. We all loved him as an human being, actor and dancer. His portrayal of a woman in To Wong Foo was sophisticated and classy better than any man that has portrayed a woman on tv or in the movies. Ghost was the
ultimate. I admired his courage and his fight! He will be missed!
