Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy dead at 77

(CNN) - Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, the patriarch of the first family of Democratic politics, died Wednesday at his home in Hyannisport, Massachusetts, after a lengthy battle with brain cancer. He was 77.

"We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever," a family statement said. "We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice."

I mourn the loss of a truly great American who fought for the underdog. I hope his legacy will be honored, and that those who care about the common man will work even harder to pass a single payer health care plan or one with a strong public option. My sympathy goes out to all of his family. He will be greatly missed.

Tonight Larry King had Kate Gosselin on his show. As if she were important in some way. Now I learn that Sen. Kennedy has died. I can't believe it. Candy vs. Substance. I am so sorry for the loss of these young peoples' father and uncle. My heart and prayers are with you all.

As a child born in '61 JFK was iconic and RFK was our hope snuffed out to soon.
Teddy was often overlooked and marginalized- just the brother left behind.
Yet in the end it was Teddy who shaped this country and made such great leaps and progress for all people.
He will never be remembered as larger than life, as his brothers and nephew are.
But to me he is a Hero and he was an American Treasure.
And he will be missed and we are the lessor for his passing.

There's no one to replace him. The Dems needed him badly at this moment to rally the Senate and get their reforms passed, since Obama is too wobbly and uncertain to do that on his own. For some reason, bad luck always seems to haunt the Kennedy family.

And of course, his death is going to bring out all the worst of the Republican town hall trolls, who will be gleeful for weeks that the last Kennedy brother is dead. We understand that very well.
