Risk Factors For Prostate Cancer

Posted: 02:04 AM ET

Learn more about the risks of prostate cancer tonight 9pm ET on CNN

From the American Cancer Society

art.gloves.operation.giA risk factor is anything that affects your chance of getting a disease such as cancer. Different cancers have different risk factors. For example, exposing skin to strong sunlight is a risk factor for skin cancer. Smoking is a risk factor for many cancers.
But risk factors don't tell us everything. Many people with one or more risk factors never get cancer, while others with this disease may have had no known risk factors.

Although we don't yet completely understand the causes of prostate cancer, researchers have found several factors that may change the risk of getting it. For some of these factors, the link to prostate cancer risk is not clear, yet.

Age
Age is the strongest risk factor for prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is very rare before the age of 40, but the chance of having prostate cancer rises rapidly after age 50. Almost 2 out of 3 prostate cancers are found in men over the age of 65.

Race/ethnicity
Prostate cancer occurs more often in African-American men than in men of other races. African-American men are also more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage, and are more than twice as likely to die of prostate cancer as white men. Prostate cancer occurs less often in Asian-American and Hispanic/Latino men than in non-Hispanic whites. The reasons for these racial and ethnic differences are not clear.

Nationality
Prostate cancer is most common in North America, northwestern Europe, Australia, and on Caribbean islands. It is less common in Asia, Africa, Central America, and South America. The reasons for this are not clear. More intensive screening in some developed countries likely accounts for at least part of this difference, but other factors are likely to be important as well. For example, lifestyle differences (diet, etc.) may be important: men of Asian descent living in the United States have a lower risk of prostate cancer than white Americans, but their risk is higher than that of men of similar backgrounds living in Asia.

Really need to know the actual number of cases and the differences in that number in the areas being compared. Terms like "greater"does not have significance if the numbers are close in percentages. Lifestyles are a factor in any cases of cancer ad should definitely be advertised and let those groups involved know that their lifestyles need changing as they are "at risk!"

Dendreon's Provenge will receive 2010 FDA Approval becoming the first late stage PC treatment to be approved in over 40 years. Provenge is a new immunotherapy Prostate Cancer designed to boost the immune system to destroy targeted cells and has shown great sucess in Phase III trials completed back in April. It's side effect profile is safe with typcally flu symptoms only for a few days. Quality of life is enhanced with patient able to resume activities life playing golf for example. On the other hand Chemo (current form Taxotere by Sanofi Adventis) destroys the immune system, makes patients very sick, lose hair and robs quality of life.

Dendreon investors will be watching Michael Milken and related Wall Street hedge funds for any corruption involving Provenge- he has tried for years to block FDA Approval and actually succeeded in May 2007 aftef the FDA Advisory Panel recommended Provenge's approval but back office politics changed the outcome. Meanwhile he has supported 3 other drug companies competing for PC space all who had their trials stopped due to deaths. Anyone interested in learning about Milken's illegal tactics should read

Theodore J. Cohen   August 21st, 2009 11:29 am ET

Risk Factors For Prostate Cancer: Good title. The risk, at least for the past 2+ years, has come primarily from the hedge funds on Wall Street (thanks to the SEC, which as usual was asleep at the switch) and a totally corrupt FDA, which the HHS OIG still refuses to investigate Specifically, while 17 members of a March 29, 2007 Advisory Committee (AC) of the FDA's own choosing voted 17-0 that Dendreon's Provenge for end state prostate cancer was SAFE and 13-4 that is demonstrated SUBSTANTIAL EFFICACY (the federally mandated standard), two conflicted members of the panel (who were special government employees), together with several government employees within the FDA and NCI, worked behind the scenes to cause the FDA to ask for more data on Provenge...data that were released on April 28, 2009, and that substantiated what the FDA knew on March 29, 2007: the drug works, it is safer than the current standard of care (chemotherapy), and is more effective than chemotherapy! Since May 8, 2007, when the FDA asked for more data, almost 70,000 men have died of PCa ... many could have been helped by using Provenge if the FDA had granted Conditional Approval until the final data were released! As Joseph Stalin once said: "One man's death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic." Or was that our FDA?! To be sure, the greatest risk to prostate (and other) cancer sufferers today IS the FDA ... of that there can be no question.

Bernie Bildman   August 21st, 2009 12:50 pm ET

Just ask Michael Milken two questions::

#1 Will he (and the Prostate Cancer Foundation) go on the record in front of millions watching your show in support of the approval of Dendreon's Provenge - with no if ands or buts?

#2 Why hasn't the Prostate Cancer Foundation not been more outspoken in supporting Provenge?

Thank you

Kerry Donahue   August 21st, 2009 12:59 pm ET

Mr. King

A great advancement for the treatment of late stage Prostate Cancer has been discovered. The treatment called Provenge should have been available to patients over 2 years ago but it was stopped by those that have interests contrary to the patients and who profitted by seeing the treatment delayed.

It is now expected that Provenge will be approved by the FDA by the end of 2009.
Two captured government agencies (the SEC and FDA as confirmed by Markopolis) came together and the result was a severe and unnecessary blow to the war on cancer.

Once this story has reached the MSM the worled will be outraged that this was allowed to happen. You owe it to your viewers and to the war on cancer to look closer at this story.

Tonights show would be a good first chance to look at this breakthrough and a follow up show would be fantastic.

Future guests should include Patrick Byrne, Harry Markopolis and someone from CareToLive.

Thanks!

Jason   August 21st, 2009 1:07 pm ET

I have never witnessed a story so deserving and in need of large media attention than the Provenge story. Please incorporate it into your Larry King Prostate program tonight. In my humble opinion, your show would be incomplete without any mention of the latest PROVEN treatment for Prostate cancer. It's a treatment that not only helps a man live longer, but actually makes the rest of his life (as well as the life of those who care about him) more enjoyable to live.

Thank you,
Jason

Charles Bennett   August 21st, 2009 1:07 pm ET

Larry King do not fall for the fools game. As a physician and patient advocate for end stage disease I have written opeds in numerous newspapers implicating Michael Milken and his billionaire buddies in the prevention of access to endstage treatments so that they may profit including Tampa Bay Trib, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Madison Capital Times, Montgomery Advertiser and others. The link below is one of these recent opeds. If you are truly concerned with the welfare of patients, then kindly ask Mr. Milken about these implications and why he does not respond. And if his response is an expected "I won't dignify these allegations with a response" or some such AND you accept that reply, then you are neither a first rate journalist nor one concerned with the welfare of your fellow Americans.

Charles Bennett, MD

Brady   August 21st, 2009 2:33 pm ET

I would love to know why our government allows Milken to hide behind a non-profit organization that has been used by his buddies' hedge funds to steal money from individual investors by supporting fake drugs/companies while ignoring and fighting against a vaccine that actually proved it extends life. If you have not read the Deep Capture chapters on Dendreon and Milken you really should. It clearly shows the world how corrupt and greedy people can be that they are willing to sacrifice human life for the love of money. Shame on you Milken, but a far bigger shame a known crook is allowed to pull off this sham by our government.

David (proprovenge)   August 21st, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Ask Michael Milken the following:

1) We know that you have been banned for life for being involved with Wall street. Have you violated this agreement?

2) Did you read Deep Capture (Mark MitcheL)about your involvement in preventing Provenge from coming to Market several years ago?
If so why is it that you haven't responded? Are you afraid of disclosure? It seems that all your close relationships with conflicted doctors at the FDA also refuse disaclosure

3) Why has your charity, which has collected hundred of millions for prostate cancer only giving a few million of research to Dendreon?

4) Did you ever benefit financially from keeping Provenge from being
approved by the FDA?

5) Are you allied with any hedge funds?

6) Ask Milken if he will use his influence at the FDA to get Provenge approved. over 65,000 men so far have died a horrible death.

Larry King

The most exciting help for stage 4 prostate cancer is Provenge. I will be very dissapointed if Provenge is not mentioned in your hour presentation.

Doug   August 21st, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Milken would just as soon make a buck thwarting the best late-stage prostate cancer therapy (Provenge from Dendreon) as he would backing a successful drug. The fact that Provenge is the very first cancer immunotherapy proven tor work, did not please Milken who was backing other therapies most of whom have by now failed. That his attempts to thwart Provenge and Dendreon might have crushed immunotherapy for many years did not stop his machinations. Please throw hard balls at this predator.

Bob -North Carolina   August 21st, 2009 3:59 pm ET

If PROVENGE and M Milken's past, as reported in DEEP CAPTURE, is not included in this show .... you may as well have another Micheal Jackson report on. I hope that Mr King has the courage to go for the REAL story of PC treatment and doesn't avoid it and end up with a worthless hour of TV.

Bud   August 21st, 2009 4:23 pm ET

Show us you are still the King! Go after the Denreon Provenge story
of manipulation and corruption by Milken and hedge funds.
Good honest men are dying each day because of people like this!
Dig in and go after the reasons why the Milken lead Prostate Cancer
Foundation isn't supporting a trial proven procedure that increases
the life expectancy in prosate cancer patients.
Larry, the cover, Prostate Cancer Foundation, Milken and the list
of hedge funds that shorted the Dendreon stock are all dirty!

Sick em, Larry

Peter McGrath   August 21st, 2009 7:02 pm ET

As a prostate cancer survivor, I have been very interested in the latest advancements in prostate treatment. My research has led me to an immunotherapy development called Provenge developed by a company named Dendreon. This is the development closest to final FDA approval and has shown much better results than other known drugs in the development stage with far fewer side affects.

(The actions by the FDA, and others, to how they have failed to support this treatment would be a great story for another show)

Although, this treatment option has been ignored by Michael Milken will it be discussed this evening? If not, why not?

Thank you,
Pete

Mike Malsbary   August 21st, 2009 9:05 pm ET

Heard on PBS today: Very common in today’s Health Care environment with any patient issue. During routine exam, a doctor finds mass on leg of patient. The patient is covered by a top quality insurance plan. Doctor orders an MRI in order to establish definitive diagnosis and course of treatment. An insurance person, a non health care professional, calls the doctor to avoid a non MRI course of action. Insurance person only allows x-ray, then an ultra sound and finally a visit to an orthopaedic doctor, all inconclusive. Insurance person finally, after persistence by the primary doctor, approves an MRI. Total time taken was about eight weeks and far more expense than the MRI originally ordered. . Eight weeks in the case of a malignant carcinoma, wasted on behalf of insurance profitability, not the patients life. This is a good example of an Insurance Company stepping between the doctor and patient. Not an example of the government meddling in the doctor patient relationship. Heard on PBS- Moss Coane-8/21/09

Kerry Donahue   August 21st, 2009 9:09 pm ET

Mr. King

Milken is a con man. He has profited at the expense of patients and has sold them all out for the almighty buck.

Wake up to Mike's scam.

Shame on you for glorifying the crook.

Kerry Donahue   August 21st, 2009 9:46 pm ET

Mr. King

Late stage prostate cancer parients have been begging Mike Milken for help for more than 2 years and he has ignored their pleas.

Some "philanthropist" he is.

If there is not money in it for him, he is not interested.

Bob -North Carolina   August 21st, 2009 10:05 pm ET

CNN seems to have joined the club also , oh well I can do without either ... Maybe a boycott of the advertisers would get some attention.
I think I know just the place to suggest that path

Theodore J. Cohen   August 21st, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Wow! It's good to alert me that they need to do something, Larry, and for that I applaud you.

But man, you blew it. By this time next year, the FDA will have approved Provenge, an immunotherpy, for prostate cancer. It's the equivalent to the discovery of penicillin or the Salk vaccine. Where is your research staff??? Doesn't anyone read your blog before the show? Who screens your messages sent on the CNN Web site...others and I have been sending you material on Provenge for almost 2 years, and nary a word on what is supposed to be THE cable news network.

Larry, you did a lot of good with this evening's show. But what if you had told people out there that by this time next year, there would be a treatment for prostate cancer that (1) required only 3 withdrawals and refusions of processed blood, (2) that had side effects no worse than 2-3 days of mild flu symptoms, and (3) that had far better survival rates than the current stand or care (Taxotere; BTW, 2-3% of men treated with this drug die from the drug!) I'll be that a lot more men might be willing to be tested, knowing that if they did have PCa, there was a treatment out there that didn't have the potential to destroy their quality of life or outright kill them.

Kerry Donahue   August 21st, 2009 11:21 pm ET

Milken sounded just like his buddy former FDA commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach. They were both complicit in delaying Provenge so that Milken could make millions.

He dare say he is a prosate cancer advocate. Families of those patients would love the chance to spit in his face. Miken and von Eschenbach conspired to deny patients a life changing treatment (Provenge).

I can get you ten families of late stage prostate cancer patients for your next show that will help you understand that Provenge is not available to their loved ones BECAUSE of Milken's greed and lust for money, fame, and power.

Please alow me to have patients and families...just ordinary folk...not rich Milken butt kissers to tell you the truth!! The PCF is a sham as it is currently run.

Milken is an obstacle in the war on cancer.

Kerry Donahue   August 22nd, 2009 9:33 am ET

Okay. A little more research and now we have it figured out. Larry and Michael are good friends. So last nights love fest was to counter some of the bad PR he has gotten from DeepCapture.com.

So what happened Larry you lost all your money with Madoff and now you are taking investment advice from convicted felon Michael Milken. Did you know that Milken and Madoff were connected through the same group of hedge funds who conducted bear raids to try to manipulate stock prices and destroy companies trying to bring prostate cancer treatments to patients.

Did he have you invested in one of his pump and dumps schemes or did he just have you short in Dendreon through his network of hedge funds?

You should not be taking investment advice from someone banned from the markets.

Save the footage of the show though so that when Milken is prosecuted again, and is back in handcuffs where he belongs, you can pull it back up and say you knew all along he was a crook.

Theodore J. Cohen   August 22nd, 2009 10:21 am ET

One last note, Larry…

With all due respect, if and when a cure for prostate cancer is found, it will NOT be called the Milken Cure!

Instead, it more likely will be called the “Gold Standard”, after Dr. Mitch Gold, the President and CEO of Dendreon Corporation, the developer of Provenge, the first cancer vaccine that will be approved for sale in the United States.

David (proprovenge)   August 22nd, 2009 11:18 am ET

Larry King

After watching your show on prostate cancer praising Milken you are
now placed in the same class of those considered a disgrace to the human race.

Hank Carson   August 22nd, 2009 12:09 pm ET

Dear Mr. King; It may be hard for you to believe that Michael Milken is the biggest financial criminal in history but that is in fact the case. Read Den of Thieves and then Deep Capture and it will become clear that his greed has no limits. To add to his wealth justifies any means whatsoever. Keep this in mind because he will skin you worse than Bernard Madoff did. Hank Carson

antoinette lee, rn   August 22nd, 2009 12:39 pm ET

I applaud you for bringing prostate cancer to the forefront. However,
I am saddened that you didn't explore any new treatments on the horizon. I would think that would have been the next step.
As written here before, a new immunotherapy is on the horizon, called Provenge. It is in the process of submitting trial results to the FDA and should be approved in early 2010.
Maybe you should Milkin about this after reading deepcapture.com.
I urge you to do so to open the kimono and expose the truth, you woud be doing the public a great service.

Charles Bennett, MD   August 23rd, 2009 9:12 am ET

This much commented on story centers around a prostate cancer vaccine called Provenge and billionaire Michael Milken, founder of the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Milken is a convicted felon who controls an insidious labyrinth of financial networks that is well documented and includes prominent FDA physicians as well as a few select captains of finance, including the recently disgraced Bernie Madoff. It is these financiers who are destroying America from within and in this case costing many American lives.

The Provenge vaccine is about to make it to market in a few months because of recently released results of another expensive trial that Dendreon, the manufacture of Provenge, was ordered to complete back in 2007 by the FDA, which controversially went against the recommendation of its panel of non-FDA experts and squashed Provenge. The FDA action came after a prominent physician, Dr. Howard Scher, led an attack against the vaccine. As a direct result of this FDA action, Dr. Scher gained millions of dollars through his positions with both a Provenge competitor and Milken, who likely gained hundreds of millions of dollars.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife flew to Dallas to visit a friend of ours who is in hospice for prostate cancer and who has tried unsuccessfully these last few years to get the Provenge vaccine. He was a Special Forces type in Vietnam. He's in his 60s. Up to a couple years ago he was a kids' soccer coach, still working. Now he and his wife are literally writing his obituary. I point him out as an example of the 60,000 men in the U.S. alone who have died since the Provenge vaccine was first squashed by the FDA and the likes of Milken and Madoff in 2007.

Provenge is an innovative and possibly curative therapy for cancer, as cancer immunotherapy may ultimately prove. The Provenge debacle alone has delayed investigation into cancer immunotherapy for years and has single-handedly increased the cost of investigating these drugs.

Still think it will be called the Milken cure?

arnold   August 23rd, 2009 11:57 am ET

Larry

I am extremely interested in prostate cancer treatment that is effective without severe side effects. I have read an informative review of a drug that was given an outstanding review that was approved by a panel of experts and apparently was denied approval due to political considerations. Please read the article in deepcapture.com

A major boost in ratings for your show and informative for people like me would be a show featuring the writer of that article, Patrick Byrne, Michael Millican and Dr. Scher

david knight   August 23rd, 2009 12:39 pm ET

Great show Larry ,,Maybe you could include a member of care to live on your next show. always great to have the cancer advocates perspectives.

Brad   August 23rd, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Naming the cure for PC after Milken – you're kidding me? From a criminal who's PCF has touted treatments that are not effective and to be financially vested in them and then to all of a sudden then to back out of them before they fail? What support is that – is he driving for a cure (haven't seen one lately from him) or to line his pockets and the pockets of his buddies? Deepcapture has all of the skinny on this guy. It's all about greed and destroying those companies that get his way that may have better ideas and solutions. My father has PC as well as 2 of my uncles, a third one recently passed away from cancer so I know all about the struggles these men have gone through and to have Milken treated like a PC god is a slap in the face of cancer patients!

Vince Adams   August 23rd, 2009 1:58 pm ET

Mr. King:

If you want to be or care to be a fair and balanced show, like your competitors, why not look into the Provenge and Dendreon saga.

Michael Milken's group will not even discuss Provenge in a positive manner or support Dendreon the company manufacturing the drug. If Michael Milken sincerely cared for prostate cancer victims he would endorse ALL potential drugs to combat it.

However, if you do your homework, his group hates the company and refuses to back it. In fact, his group directly and indirectly attacks Dendreon for their own self-motivated financial purposes. DO your job and investigate that part of the prostate cancer story. Don't be captured like the rest of the American media today and be a disgrace to your industry.

The BEST prostate cancer drug coming quickly down the pipeline is none other than Provenge – none of the drugs Micheal Milken supports even come close to the outcomes of Provenge from Dendreon. Provenge should be discussed much more than Milken-backed companies and drugs that do not even work or has years and years of trials yet to even endure.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post – the WONDERFUL organization that advocates for PC patients. They unquestionably have their BEST interests at heart… “getting better” (unlike another foundation which is well-known) !! Their site is ‘Care To Live dot org’. It’s gives the cancer patients an INCREDIBLE option… and hopefully soon (beginning or mid-2010), it will be available, not only to end-stage cancer patients, but also to earlier stage patients, as well !!

Best to all Cancer Patients and their Loved Ones !! 🙂

FDA ... Approve "Provenge" (vaccine) NOW !!

Tan Tjie Khauw   August 24th, 2009 2:22 am ET

Mr King
I am a regular viewer of your show, and i expect your show to continue to voice important messages for many issues that affect our lives. The Provenge Vaccine story developed by Dendreon Corporation (DNDN) is both powerful and important for all Prostate Cancers around the world to learn about this life saving treatment with very tolerable side effects of flue like symptom as compared to those of Taxotere that are cruel and that can kill. There is no better place to get the Provenge Vaccine story out (before other competitors do it) at your show RIGHT NOW.. No more delay, and nor excuse for more delay please since the story is already out there, and you are a very smart guy and you know what is right and what needs to be done to right the wrong..

Tim   August 24th, 2009 9:52 am ET

Note to the shows producers. Milken is a crook. He will always be a crook. How much money has he returned to the people he ripped off over the years? His entire "Foundation" is just another Bernie Madoff type ponzi scheme funneling money to him and his cohorts under the guise of cancer prevention. Stop parading this crook around.

James Knauff   August 24th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

Very informative program and excellent follow up blog. My dear friend missed the show, but, this gives him the opportunity to read the content. He is currently in treatment. I am a survivor of throat cancer from second hand smoke. Ten years clean. As most of us, i have several friends who have been treated or have family members who have been cured. Talking about the issue and encouraging early detection is most assuredly key to survival. Thank you.

Dominick Saso   August 24th, 2009 5:47 pm ET

Dear Mr King you have done a great disservice to all late pc patients by not mentioning the Provenge vaccine, which should be available by early 2010. It will become the gold standard of Prostate cancer treatment, No thank you whatsoever to Mr MILKEN.

Kerry Donahue   August 24th, 2009 6:04 pm ET

Robert Madden MD   August 24th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

I believe Michael Milikin initially had nothing against Provenge. I suspect that some of his scientific advisors told him that this therapeudic cancer idea would never work. At that point DNDN became an attractive short opportunity. I believe he was probably involved in trying to destroy the company along with others. How much he was involved is hard for me to say. Many posters above fell he was heavily involved.

mhelburn   August 30th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

Back in the 30's there was a doctor.. Royal Raymond Rife and his very innovative way of identifying and treating viruses and cancer was hailed and then squelched. Morris Fishbein was head of the AMA at the time. Fascinating story.... deja vu all over again.
