IMPACT YOUR WORLD: "We Are the World"

Posted: 04:34 PM ET

Tonight, our "Impact Your World" segment will focus on "USA for Africa."  The organization was founded in 1985, and was the beneficiary of the song, "We Are the World," written by Michael Jackson.  Harry Belafonte, Inspirational Founder of USA for Africa, explains the organization's mission below.

Editor's Note: "We Are the World" is currently #70 on iTunes most downloaded songs.

When dramatically faced with tragedy or injustice, people respond in unprecedented ways. They are galvanized to action or compelled to respond in someway. This is why people keep trying to improve the world. Harry-Belafonte

People have demonstrated this in situations throughout history both large and small, be it neighbor helping neighbor during the Depression, or when famine and other natural disasters such as the Tsunami or Katrina happens.

I discovered some time ago that being in the struggle for freedom, to fight against injustice or to end poverty is not a part time job, nor can it be treated as a hobby. I have strongly believed in the importance of artists recognizing their potential role in effecting social change. Public figures have always used their status to help others, by using their public visibility and drawing power to spotlight serious problems where ever they may exist.

Here in America, right in our own backyard, we witness the tragedy of hunger and homelessness. In the world's wealthiest country, millions of women, children and men lack the most basic human needs.

I would like not to be political, but I see no way for the issues of famine, hunger and the lack of adequate medical care for all people of the world to be settled, other than politically. But before any action can be taken, we each must on a global scale, make a commitment that all people have a right to be free from hunger and disease.

This requires the commitment, not only of each of us but governments along with the collective resources of industry and private enterprise to make the difference that is needed. It will also require the continuing and important involvement of artists who can use their art to send messages to audiences of millions. We now have many more artists who truly understand this power and are making their presence felt by galvanizing the public to put pressure on world leaders along with them, so that there can then exist a world where all of humanity can fulfill its potential for good.

Larry and all the CNN news teams:

Enough! I'm sorry about MJ. But does anyone still care about Iran? Iraq? North Korea? Health care? Global Warming? Honduras? Republican sex scandals?

This week it seems CNN has turned into the all Michael all the time channel.

CNN is the best news channel - but don't get overconfident. The others are really bad. Please try to get a bit of balance in your reporting. We need to keep in touch with the rest of the world even as we mourn MJ.

Thanks,
Glenn

Rev. Sharpton is really trying to stretch the impact Michael had on the world ... Just let him rest. He was just a human being!

Henry Branham   June 30th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

When are we going to realize that the Jackson children are innocent
and deserve all the rights of a child that has been adopted, where they came from, who birthed them is none of our business. I sincerely hope that they are not allowed to watch this spectacle that is playing out on tv. I believe that it is the parent or guardians responsible to sit down with the child when the time is right to give them that information–not the NEWS! What are we doing to his children!!!!!!

Gil   June 30th, 2009 9:27 pm ET

Troops leaving Iraq, plane crash. MJ was great but enough already.

sandi krueger   June 30th, 2009 9:31 pm ET

It is so heartbreaking when you love someone's talent and they die.

Let's stop the false accusations. Face it, people wanted his money.

Let him lay in peace, mentally, physically and emotionally. He was the king of the universe. Forever..

what is wrong with this country and world. michael jackson may have been a good entertainer according to some, but it stops there, he was totally messed up. he is no one to be praised. to watch al sharpton dancing on the stage at the apollo theatre is sickening, al sharpton likes to be seen and heard, he likes being in the limelight. according to Christianity account what has michael jackson done for this world. people are dying everyday spreading God's word and you hear nothing of it. i have felt sorry for michael jackson's abused by his father as a child, he had no life, could not enjoy life and then he dies by possibly making unwise choices in his life. i can't believe congress took a moment out in silence to remember michael jackson. what about the men and women that are sacrificing their life for this country in dangerous places throughout the world. wake up america and praise and glorify your creator not a man. when we all take our last breath it will not be michael jackson we will answer to it will be God, our maker. could some people possibly see this as a money making deal and the press is not helping out by it's continues coverage.

This is just the beginning of the terrible lies that are going to be told. This Michael Jackson case will harbor the best liars. People will be creeping out of corners with the most gruesome tales that are absolutely false. This is the media's conspiracy to make sure that a black man doesn't go down in history for being "The King".
Michael Jackson has done enough to prove himself as being King. He has become self-less and gave all that he can give to the less fortunate. Not even the most wealthy politicians can dare to step into his shoes.
His music was influential to all ages and cultures, and became the universal language. He was an icon, and there can never be another to grace this world such as he did.

Janice Smith   June 30th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

I think they should re-release "We are the World" in Michael's name and donate the proceeds. There are millions of young people that are hearing it for the first time because they were not born in 1985 or they were very young, yet so many of the performers are ICONS that they listen to on their IPODS and watch on MTV and VH1. I think it is important to remember Michael for all the wonderful things he did for the world. He was a musical geniuis and that is the way he should go down in history.

Stephi, Los Angeles, CA   June 30th, 2009 9:57 pm ET

Just a thought: What if this is Michael Jackson's legacy, to transcend race, gender, economic status, to open ones heart to others, no matter what the difference. Perhaps in his own sad way, he tried to embody this in himself through his protracted transformation over the years. Maybe he was just trying to "walk his talk". Maybe he was just trying to make the collective dream come true.

Harrison   June 30th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

It is sad to be sure... I remember exactly where I was when it was announced that Elvis died – I was a teenager in Gary, Indiana and thought what a waste of real talent. I celebrated (of course not) my 21st birthday the day John Lennon was murdered. Michael Jackson was indescribably talented and our world has lost someone who, while personally tortured (like so many...) changed so much through his talent and drive to make a real difference in the world. We should all just focus on the music, the talent and all that these exceptional human being brought to us... the media should just focus on the talent...

Rhonda   June 30th, 2009 11:43 pm ET

My heart goes out to the Jackson family for their loss. I have a question. When did it become ok for the public to have all of the most private details of someone else’s life and death? Michael Jackson did grow up in the limelight, but when he passed away his business became a heart breaking matter for his family. The public needs to use their God given morals and allow his family time and space to deal with the death of a loved one. Michael was someone’s father, friend and son. The public is just fans of who was on stage. His death is not another performance for our entertainment. I am so sorry for his family. We all need to back off and let them have some privacy. This all just breaks my heart.

george   July 1st, 2009 12:07 am ET

Janice,,is correct,,Re/release "We are the World"....young people today need to learn/hearn that wonderful song...all of should learn to sing it...

Kim Barnes   July 1st, 2009 1:01 am ET

Sorry CNN this crap about the July 4th weekend, how much longer to do you think this family should wait before burying Michael.

If at all possible, please get this message to the Jackson's Family. They DO NOT owe American anything.

This is your son, brother, father, uncle and friend. I think that you should have your family memorial, bury him and try to find closure for the healing of yourselves and his children.

You don't need to have a public viewing and I truly think that anyone who really did appreciate, admire and loved him even though they did not know him will always do so in their heart and mind. Anyone who doesn't understand this is simply sad and inconsiderate.

God Bless and Thank you.

BB   July 1st, 2009 6:06 am ET

Just to comment on Larry and the whole USA for Africa assumption that ALL of Africa was/ is starving. No we are not.

At the time the song was written and performed, Ethiopia was experiencing famine.

NOT the entire Afiuca.
I grew up in Nigeria and we were fine.
in fact we were asked to donate for Ethiopia .
i am always bewildered that the media insists on lumping the entire Africa as starving, naked, crazy, poor etc..i grew up middle class in Africa.
Jeez.
its really condesckendinga nd offensiz,e.

calvin mead   July 1st, 2009 5:31 pm ET

mandy   July 1st, 2009 9:42 pm ET

I PRAY WITH ALL MY PRAYERS FOR THE JACKSON FAMILY,ESPECIALLY HIS CHILDREN, FOR ALL THE STRENGTH OF GOD TO BE WITH THEM AND KEEP THEM STRONG. n8 the gr8   July 2nd, 2009 12:34 am ET

michael jackson was awesome i wish i could have saw him.

alwazmsunderstood   July 2nd, 2009 11:50 pm ET

I appreciated Rev. Al Sharpton’s latest comment with regard to how the Media is not given the respect that MJ deserves. MJ have made insurmountable contributions to the world. MJ’s good deeds and great works far exceeds the controversy, speculations and here-says which are not factual neither proven. Mj was a great humanitarian with wonderful attributes. There are many that are affected by his death and we are hurting. In everything, there is a reason and a season and a time and purpose. Please allow MJ’s family, close friends and global fans mourn him in peace. Thank You Al Sharpton for speaking out today and the media needs to give back to MJ’s family what MJ gave the world….LOVE…RIP MJ and deepest condolences to Katherine, Joe, Jermaine, Janet and the family.

Michael Jackson made such an impact on this world, but ironically didn't seem to feel like he was understood or accepted by it. I think it would be fitting for Michael and those who loved him, to allow him to be the first man to be laid to rest on the moon. After all, he is "The Moonwalker".

marie zustin   July 6th, 2009 7:45 pm ET

That's so awesome! Thank you Kathy for getting involved in such a truly great cause. Man's best friend can make all the difference every single day in life of a disabled veteran. I wish everyone involved in this project the best going forward.

Anna Watt   July 7th, 2009 3:48 am ET

If only WE would have let him know how WE feel about him now that he's gone, WE would have given him the medicine his soul longed for. Why must WE wait for people to pass through OUR lives before WE begin the process of appreciation? In honor of all those who have become no more than a memory in OUR hearts let's welcome the process of appreciation NOW by expression of LOVE, COMPASSION, UNDERSTANDING, and RESPECT for one another. May Michael Jackson's kind, gentle, loving spirit live long in all of US. May his memories remind US all to take a better look at that man in OUR mirrors. May his BODY rest profoundly and his spirit shine forever more.
Thanks You, thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts. CHEERS!!! Here's to Michael Jackson!

RUFUS IYOHA   July 7th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

I believe God so loved this world that for every generation he gives an ICON for the world to cherish and love. In my generation, God gave us Michael Jackson, i don't think that there will be any other ICON that will be loved like Michael Jackson. Forever he lives.
I love you Michael Jackson!

JOY   July 7th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

We pay our service men and women very little and when they give their life for our freedom they may get a minute's attention. We have spent the last week honoring a man who made millions because he could sing. SHAME ON US.

Erika Trinkle   July 11th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

Michael Jackson,
is and always will be the world's greatest entertainer
i love Michael Very Much and i am devastaed to hear about his passing.,
Every sense the day of his death i have been watch every news coverage availible to me on CNN to MSNBC. what i have learned from watching it is that. Michael Jackson's Cartioligist wasnt very smart. I agree with Mr. Joe Jackson that there was foul play. here are the questions i thought of when i heard the news about MJ.

I was asking myslef, Why would this doctor wait 30 minutes before calling 911 to get help? and doesnt it seem kindof weird that Michael was in a room without a phone in there? and if the Doctor was smart Why did he try to Revive him by doing CPR on a Bed? And why would this man hire a Criminal Defense Lawer?
i can tell there is something wrong here. When his lawer was talking to CNN he was studdering and had to stop and think about what to say before he answered some of the questions and he seemed VERY nervous.
I strongly believe that Michael's doctor that was there with him mabey have murdered Michael. i am only making this judgement by what i have learned by watching the News 24/7 about Michael.
But what do i know? I'm only 14.

I hope Michael is no longer in pain, i love him VERY VERY Much.
and i think what people put him through was Childish of them.
Michael would NEVER hurt a child in anyway. Everyone heard what he said on Via Satitlitte. He said,"i would never hurt a child, if i ever did i would slit my wrists!" Doesnt that say anything?

But then i'm only 14 so i'll just leave it up to the proffesionals to find the cause of his death.

Iloveyou Michael Joseph Jackson! you mean the world to me!
R.i.p.-Michael Joseph Jackson

Michael Jackson was gifted by God, and that gift he returned back to God, by means of all his Humanitarian aid and his charity. for worth $300,000,000 he donated so far, and on his last will, How could some people hate him and destroy him. i really don't understand.
Michael was an extra ordinary gentleman, his sweetness, kindness, and generosity will live forever. Not only because he is the king of pop, but KING OF CHARITY!!! ...
michael if only i could turn back the clock, i will let you know how much the world love you..
It doesn 't matter some people hate you.. WHAT MATTERS MOST IS YOUR KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY..
May God keep you in heaven and give you everlasting happiness.

Arefat   July 14th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

i would very much like to hear and see some more , a lot more regarding micheal jacson's humanitarian contribution. Since this 24 hours news cylcle and headlines mostly trashing there was not much information regarding his contribution to several charities. This outstanding, gifted and phenomenal artist has been one of the biggest humanitarian peson in our world.

Sheryl   July 14th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Yes, re-release "We are the World." My children in their twenties were too young at the time. They are now becoming very interested in what Michael did. Keep us all posted on the developments. For those that don't want to see or hear it, get off the couch or change the channel.

Bonnie Bentson   July 18th, 2009 9:08 am ET

Everyone is being taken in with the sly and seemingly harmless message of "SLOW DOWN, we don't need to act hastily on the Health Reform" - why hasn't anyone noted how many citizens are DAILY losing health coverage? This will increase the pressure on our Emergency Services at increased cost. That would seem to be an important factor to publicize. Also an analysis of how much money the insurance companies are putting into legislative pockets would be of interest. A big part of the support for Obama was the hope that his administration would be relatively free from Special Interest group pressure. Why are memories so short in Washington? They aren't in the rest of the country.

Dana   July 23rd, 2009 1:00 pm ET

see what Michael Jackson did for the world he got peoples attention to the human condition
thank you Michael for loving our world

Gloria   July 23rd, 2009 1:50 pm ET

Today I just red so many truthful and kind words about Michael Jackson
that my eyes are full of tears and I feel a warm embrace of Love surround me. He was and is an example of gentleness, kindness, affection, dedication, love and care. He was everything else that embodied good deeds and an unforgettable friend for those close to him and even for all of us that knew him from afar.
To his family, his mother Katherine, his father Joe, Jeremias, Janet, and all the others, and to his beautiful kids all the best there is.

Ilma B.   September 9th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

There will NEVER be another Micheal Jackson..He was such a Loving and Caring individual along with his tremendous efforts in donating money to charities like USA for Africa and many others all around the world...was the Greatest Gift of all..He touched people through his lyrics and songs and was a International Pop Star..The KING OF POP! He will never be forgotten and his Legacy will live on through the decades...and his songs will continue to inspire many people around the world. R.I.P. MJ

This morning at 8:30 A.M. FOX News reported on a scandal involving two employees of ACORN in Maryland, advising two undercover journalists on how to commit a felony. The undercover journalists posed as a prostitute and her pimp. The Tax Specialist for ACORN gave her a new title "Performance Artist", told her about all of her tax writeoffs and told her how she could bring in underage, illegal sex slaves from El Salvador and write them off as dependents. I monitored CNN all day, and there has not been one word of this scandal. Do you call this journalism? I think you need to go back to school. The liberal teachers did not teach you well. Remeber "Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press? The last I heard, we still had those rights.

I'm writing today to ask for help!!..im currently with a new not-for profit organization called "american's ending homelessness, inc.
we are located in pasco county florida..currently we are out in the "trenches" finding homeless camps and recently it came to our attention that the county school busses actually stop at a wooded area and pick up dozens of children to bring them back and fourth to school..these children are living with their families in the woods..we are a new organization and we are trying very hard to help our homeless citizens..but we need donations!...our staff of (3) people are doing everything we can out of our pockets..this includes, outreach, we have gotten training for access to state programs such as welfare and social security and we help expedite these people's applications, we help with food and give referrals..there are other programs that we are enrolled for , but everything is a process and we need operational costs covered.all we are asking for is gas monies, a large printer, and possible help with supplies to renovate a house that is being donated to us for several years, but we have to bring it up to standards..we arent asking for monies for labor just supplies. we intend on opening a mini shelter and resource center. this county of pasco is so underdeveloped and we have virtually no free shelters for all those in need.some folk dont meet the citeria of the very few that are available...please help us , help those who need help so bad!

barbara nardini   November 23rd, 2009 6:36 pm ET

I WANT TO APOLIGIZE FOR POSTING OUR MESSAGE FOR HELP..I DIDNT REALIZE THAT THERE WAS AN ACTUAL TOPIC..I TOTALLY AGREE THAT PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE WORLD SHOULD BE HELPED!..AS A MATTER OF FACT WE HAVE A CHURCH HERE IN PASCO COUNTY THAT IS COLLECTING SHOES FOR THE CHILDREN OF THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES AND NOT EXCLUDING AFRICA.I WISH EVERYONE WELL AND A HAPPY HOLIDAY..BUT REMEMBER THE PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH NOTHING AND TRY TO HELP SOMEHOW!
