Mystery Solved: SC Governor was just out on a hike

Posted: 07:34 AM ET

A mystery surrounding the whereabouts of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was apparently solved late Monday when a Sanford spokesman said he was hiking along the Appalachian Trail.

"I apologize for taking so long to send this update, and was waiting to see if (we had) a more definitive idea of what part of the trail he was on before we did so," Joel Sawyer said in an e-mail to reporters.

Sanford's whereabouts were unaccounted for Monday when he stepped out of the public eye following a bruising session with the state Legislature. Even his wife, Jenny, said she did not know where he was, The Associated Press reported, according to The State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina.

"I want to emphasize that this isn't something that either staff or Mrs. Sanford is concerned about," Sawyer wrote Monday night. "As we said earlier today, it isn't unusual for the governor to be out of pocket for several days after the legislative session. We knew that he would be difficult to reach, and that he would be checking in infrequently. Given the media attention this has generated, we'll obviously update you once we have some more specifics to pass along."

Now we know what kind of person South Carolina is dealing with. It's time for a change.

Why wouldn't his wife know where he was?

You can't blame the Governor, the people of South Carolina has been telling him to take a hike for years.

I thought he was out writing another Proclamation of Secession in secret, and plotting to take South Carolina out of the Union. they are all free to go any time they want, with my blessing, and they can take Texas, Oklahoma and Mississippi with them as parting gifts.

Maybe he is Hiking on the Appalachian trail because it was NAKED HIKING DAY Friday and the old boy was there getting his kicks on route Appalachian trail and he met someone on the trail and stayed and missed Fathers Day with his 4 boys man what next will this guy do. Another 2012 presidential candidate bit the dust. Maybe he and Ensign can start a club.

As a married woman of 36 years, I can not imagine my husband leaving for a few hours, let alone an entire day without letting me know his plans!

Something's fishy. Perhaps Sanford & Ensign have something in common..... wink....... wink.

OH PLEASE, give him a BREAK

Judith   June 23rd, 2009 9:50 pm ET

Funny how ones that are Republicans say to give him a break like the Senator from Nevada give him a break and more each day comes out that he paid double with goverment monies when he started sleeping with her and gave her 19 yrs old son a job when in fact ones were standing in line that were more qualify.

Back to the Gov of SC.He was one that the GOPS were thinking of for 2012 for President.Well he mess that up.More will come out on him too.

Judith   June 23rd, 2009 10:05 pm ET

This guy was gone 4-5 days.If something were to have happen in SC he would have found it out after the happening and it could have cost him his job.In fact this could still cost him his job. Many has stated that he was kind of an odd ball.

David   June 23rd, 2009 10:30 pm ET

I think this should cost him his job. The Governor of a State can't simply just vanish like this and have no one know where he is or how to contact him!!!! That is pure dereliction of duty. If he wants to do this type of thing he needs to go find another job.

The SC Governor I heard was on a nudist hike came from CNN the situation room Wolf Blizar. I am glad he is not in the running for Pres. He can not be found as Governor let alone be president of the US in 2012. Another REP who would have ruined this country taking off without telling people . Gov Arnald ruined California now he wants to do movies because his two terms is up. California is in a big mess of no return. GOP party is off to a good start for 2012 .

Okay....a RUNAWAY wants the U S to consider him for president in

If you believe his story then you believe in Fairy Tales, Santa Claus and that a Stork brings the babies. Or simply he was after the tail of a fairy!!!
