High School Elects Male Prom Queen

Posted: 05:55 AM ET

LOS ANGELES - An openly gay teen is the new prom queen at Fairfax High School.

Sergio Garcia, 18, was crowned queen Saturday night at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

"I feel invincible," Garcia said wearing his rhinestone studded tiara.

A few days earlier, he gave a speech that touched a nerve with students: "At one time, prom may have been a big popularity contest where the best-looking guy or girl were crowned king and queen. Things have changed and it's no longer just about who has the most friends or who wears the coolest clothes," Garcia told a gymnasium full of seniors.

"I'm not your typical prom queen candidate. There's more to me than meets the eye."

What is America turning into. Can Larry King clarify that 'sex before marriage is sin and called FORNICATION. Being a Christian and not according to the biblical standard is Idolatry. We are sick of the claims that having children out of wedlock is okay by Christtianity!!! The Ritchie's should note!!!

eve marson   May 29th, 2009 7:11 am ET

people have been "different" since the beginning of time – jesus himself was supposedly very different ....i am happy to see the youth is not in "fear" of different but are starting to embrace it in many different ways – like this one......good for them – imagin living in a world with harmony ?

Jay   May 29th, 2009 11:37 am ET

Queen means female, that crown is not for him.

Dave of Detroit   May 29th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Shows that being a great "Frencher" is not a sexual orientation based trait. Did you know that all tri-colored cats are female?

Dave of Detroit   May 29th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Jay-You did not see the huge forum on women's new role in the world! Queens are attended only by females. Us males make one viagra induced flight and drop to the earth and die! oh, well, it was fun while it lasted!

Enough   May 29th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

This is the stupidest thing I have heard of yet. Glamorizing and exploiting gayness at it's worst. Why couldn't he just be a Gay Prom King? Guess they need to specify that a Queen should be FEMALE and that it has nothing to do with sexual preference. This country is in big trouble when that generation takes over!!

SLM   May 29th, 2009 4:18 pm ET

With ridiculous displays like this people wonder why there isn't support of Gay marriage. Just love who you want, but these displays like the parades and the rainbow speedos will not make people take their fight seriously.

I've been thinking about what Judge Sotomayor said and I'm beginning to think that the people against are the real Bigots.
What are they upset about?
A Hispanic Woman had the nerve to say she would/could make better decisions than a White male and who is really upset???
White Males....!
Go figure!

Great Shows Larry
I hope to one day read about your journey!

@ Dave from Detroit.

You might be interested in reading the book entitled: Iron John: A Book About Men written by by Robert Bly. Bly's attempt to encourage men to examine themselves, and believe that men's and women's movements can coexist bringing about an equal relationship between them. Bly discusses lessons especially meaningful to men. Bly believes that this fairy tale contains lessons from the past of great importance to modern men.

Daniel Nelson   May 29th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Please tell me what this country has come to when we take freedom to the extreme where people can freely sin without care of what God said was an abomination and would be set up where it should not be. Yes in the United States the first truly Christian nation. He also stated that this would happen in the end times which surely looks like were having the labor pains that he talked about! If the homosexuals think that God has changed they should read the bible again(or for the first time)and realize that he said that he will never change nor will he favor one over another! All will be treated equally according to what they have done in life!

jesse   May 29th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

was he crowned queen as a joke, is this going to be another "carrie"?

Dave of Detroit   May 29th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Dodie-I have a somewhat varied background and hardly shockable at all-Some friends of mine got into the erotic book "The Perfumed Gardens' and were passing out certificates at work upon completion. I loved Greek Mythology and the plight of Telemachius was a beaut-Due to some strange experiences , he had lived as both a man and a woman and the Greek Gods and Goddesses called upon him to say which sex got the most pleasure from intercourse. Both sides promised him equal pain and equal benefits so he was supposed to answer truthfully and he said that women did1 The women Goddesses struck him blind but the men gave him the gift of great storyteller to compensate. Believe it or not , Masters and Johnson actuallt decided to find out scientifically and wired and tested the hormone levels of couples so engaged and it turned out that both sexes were equally appreciative-go figure!

Robert   May 29th, 2009 11:44 pm ET

First, I think it's fair to say that this prom queen boy probably has more guts than most people out there. I can't understand why he would want to be prom queen, but it is not my place, nor anybody else's, to question his decision.

Second, I say to Daniel Nelson: where did you hear that the United States was the first truly Christian nation? Why spew out misinformation as though it is some fact? The first truly Christian nation was Armenia, which claimed Christianity as its state religion in the year 301.

Finally, as far as the bible is concerned regarding homosexuality, I provide the following piece for your reading pleasure. It is a hilarious letter to Dr. Laura, an individual with whom I am sure you are no doubt familiar. You may have even seen this before as it made its way through cyberspace years ago. This tongue-in-cheek writing exposes the hypocrisy of those who like to quote the bible when it suits them, disregarding any other content of the bible which is ridiculous and offensive by pretty much any standard and can certainly not be defended by any decent person.

******

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness – Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? – Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted fan,
Jim

I'm only 50 years old, but from a small country place. I had 77 graduate in my high school class, which was large. All the surrounding communities attended my school. The school had about the same number as my town.

So, I have a different perspective on about everything. There was one year that a teacher begged me to be a cheerleader. To bring up the GPA. I declined. It seemed silly. Everyone thought it was a little silly. I got to be the school paper's editor. That had more clout. Odd values back then.

We voted on queens for stuff. Some wanted me to be one, which really made me angry. It was not my thing. Regardless of appearance. But I had a good friend who wanted to be a queen of homecoming badly, and told the football players to elect her as a favor, and we were all like brothers and sisters. She was not great looking, sweet, and they did. The gals voted for her too. That was one of my best memories ever. People are sweet. If they try. I remember standing around and discussing with our class, who should be what and seeing who wanted what the most. The pretty, popular girls wanted a lot so that was fine with most of us. I never wanted any of that stuff. Still not my thing. A pain in the backside if you ask me.

People have their places. That's about all I know. Mostly we know our gender. Very young.

G.   May 30th, 2009 1:34 am ET

Robert – that is sooo funny! I can only tell you that I think the Old Testament was written, by a knowing entity to address that time period as needed. Then, when needed and ready, the New Testament, the Good News! Stuff is forgiven. That is pretty major. Weightless. We all mess up but it happens. We have now reached the point, the next step, where we know we are messing up. But there is a kicker, we now really start creating and thinking and know that we are a little God like. That's a huge responsibility in a way. So it's not about how I judge you, but more about how you judge your self and your life style. God said a man and a woman will make children and support them, way back. We dare change that? That's pretty gutsy and funny too. People are just entertaining.

G.   May 30th, 2009 1:37 am ET

No offense. Perhaps society is better off with same sex marriage and single parent homes. I'm no judge of that stuff.

MACDONALDBANK   May 30th, 2009 3:01 am ET

Homophobia and religious extremism. When one studies civilization and finds that the Irish people are 60,000 years old; 54,000 years older than the Jews/Palestinians; Egypt or Greece and that the myth of Catholicism or Christianity is a mere 2009 years old; one soon realises that there is little evidence to prove any of the cross related bogus elements of that cult. In the year 300 AD when Emperor Constantine who to some was the first pope; went on to fabricate Christianity – a fantasy – which turned out to be one of the most hateful & evil concoctions ever perpetrated on the world. The Vatican supported Hitler and religion is responsible for more corruption and violence in the world. Pope Ratzinger was involved in the Nazi youth. The Pope & Vatican with its blatant witchcraft related to the bible and its hateful beliefs; tries to rule with extreme prejudices against the world … that may fall victim to religions' absolute evil. To think of Matthew Sheppard choking on his own blood after being savagely beaten; virtually sanctioned by the church ... is beyond comprehension … yet is the same as boys being bullied into suicide; most likely being supported by their parents’ religious beliefs. What ever happened to … "Love Your Fellowman?” Perhaps the evil preachers should be told to take their cult out of America. Didn't Thomas Jefferson say that church and state should be separated by a wall and it's written in the Constitution that there must be separation of church and state. Bigotry and hatemongering against gays should be banned. Tell them to take that cross and shove it where the sun don't shine ... and pay their taxes along the way before they take that cross down forever ... with its final station; extinction. It is written; so therefore it shall be? We are the chosen people? Who wrote that crap? United States is supposedly fighting for democracy? It is suppressing gay rights and following an extremist religious & bigoted family values path according to a basic cult riding roughshod over the rights of gay people. Canada and Britain are more civilized with its military and basic dignity. We must respect that these fine dignified gentlemen … His Excellency Governor Schwarzenegger, The Honorable Attorney General Jerry Brown, His Excellency Mayor Gavin Newson, Assemblyman Tom Ammiano & The Honorable Rep. Barney Frank (D) who is personally openly gay … are trying to guarantee equal rights and reflect the respect shown to all; as stated in the American Constitution. To see the religious lunatics manipulate government and our lives … is shameful.
This bogus religious filth should be banned. It exists as a tax exempt structure which discriminates against human rights. The pope, bishops and mormons are cult members promoting discrimination against minorities. That bogus black book called the bible should be banned. Religion and the churches should now be exposed as a bigoted structure that gets away with hate mongering. Love between two guys or girls existed long before these cults existed. By enjoying their tax exempt status and benefits from the state ... it also puts them at the mercy of America; to be forced to adhere to the human rights laws. Religion is thriving like a cancerous growth on society that should be stopped in its tracks; outlawed & banned. Interesting global occurrence … Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien told the Vatican that there was to be no cross erected over the Canadian Parliament buildings … figuratively speaking; when the Pope demanded the Prime Minister go against gay rights. An Alberta bishop had the audacity to say that The Canadian Prime Minister would go to hell for going against the church. Such outrageous evil threats; the religious extremists force upon us trying to multiply … with their control over birthing like animals at the pulpit. With reference to protecting the children. The Right Honourable Prime Minister … in return; basically told the Pope to go to Hell. The Honourable Hedy Fry, member of the Canadian Liberal Parliament, who happens to be a doctor spoke eloquently to defend the rights of babies being born and stated that she was in fact defending their rights by speaking on behalf of equal rights for the children and youth of the future; defending their integrity and dignity.

Many theologians state quite correctly that the birth; crucifixion; resurrection and other elements of christianity actually didn’t even happen! Today’s evangelical extremists are like the nazis who cast others into ovens & are actually supremacists – who practice their bogus hocus pocus – and are trying to suppress and deprive others of their happiness and their legal rights in an open and proud society. Liberty College, Oral Roberts University and others should be looked at as tax exempt terroristic training grounds for evangelical lunatics. It was refreshing in his final weeks; to hear President Bush acknowledge that he didn’t believe in any of that religious bunk.

I am the son of a catholic father who never went to church and a protestant mother who took us to church and Sunday school. Although we as young children would sneak out the side door and play by the cannon from World War One where my grand-father fought for freedom as a Sgt Mgr at Vimy and father who fought at Normandy on D-Day for freedom. Onward christian soldiers ... I think not. Such drivel. To be manipulated by a santa claus; an easter bunny and worst of all a bogus cross. One should appreciate each day of life and not expect another ... and if there is it will be given by a God of Love. Pat Robertson should be taken to task for his grandstanding filth. Einstein stated in a letter recently auctioned that the bible was collection of primitive legends. He said believing in God was childish and he as a Jew is no different than another person … not chosen by God. Do you want to be lambs at the slaughter or be wise and reject religious cultist manipulation? Mean & nasty; run by evil and bogus religious cults from Rome or wherever. Is this the world you want? The pope talks about ending prejudice and hate; what a hypocrite!

A great story … pertains to a boy at a catholic school in Oshawa, Ontario … who wanted to take his boyfriend to his school prom. The nasty catholic school forbid this. The boy’s father is an employee with General Motors Canada and the courageous union leader … Buzz Hargrove stood up for the boys’ rights. The boy took his case through the courts and because the school was benefiting from government funding which demands equal rights void of discrimination; the judge ordered the school to allow the boys to attend together. Their limo arrived at their prom with adoring onlookers … there wasn’t a dry eye to be found.

Daniel Nelson   May 30th, 2009 6:53 am ET

Robert what has happened to Armenia? We were founded by Christians who do not show hatred for others beliefs and this is why I call the U.S. the first true Christian nation. I also want to note that our founders have made it law that there is separation of church and state so as to protect the church from the state not to protect the state from the church!

Demond   May 30th, 2009 9:07 am ET

Daniel Nelson you really need a history lesson. I cannot believe you wrote " We were founded by Christians who do not show hatred for others beliefs" well I think you should talk to some Native Americans, or a few African-Americans, or simply read a history book or two.

C Kelly   May 30th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

Gender identity and sexual preference is a bio-psycho-social process. Teens and young adults may struggle with identity formation until mid twenties. Our society has a role in both being kind and compassionate-AND setting definate but reasonable boundaries in childhood and adolescence. The media and the glorification of decadence and freedom without responsibility has a role to play in the confusion of our youth.

Robert   May 30th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

Daniel, I agree that Armenia is in shambles. Keep in mind the Armenian genocide of 1915-1917 and the fact that Armenia was ruled by the Soviets for some 70 years. (I have visited Armenia, and it is a lovely country, but the standard of living there doesn't compare to that of the USA.) Regardless, my point really was the United States was not the first truly Christian nation.

Further, the good Christians who founded the United States did not find it wrong to purchase human beings and use them as they saw fit (perhaps they thought it was okay seeing as how Leviticus sanctions the ownership of slaves). Clearly the founders had no consideration or love for the African slaves or their belief systems. It is not my intention to attack your belief system, but I think all too often individuals do not question or challenge their own belief systems but follow them blindly.

As far as separation of church and state goes, don't kid yourself. "In God we Trust" printed on American money, and a prayer at the inauguration of America's president, show there is not true separation of church and state in America, no matter how often and how loud it is proclaimed. I am not comparing America to the Islamic Republic of Iran by any means, but let's be real.

Dave of Detroit   May 30th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

P.S. I thought Emperor Constatine put Rome under Christianity before Albania but my mind keeps playing tricks on me-Think we still have a Constitution and leaders that enforce it. Sadly, my nursing home benefits look in jeapardy under Obama's new health plan-Still trying to get my rollaround through=plan to soup it up when it gets here!
