Pelosi makes surprise visit to Baghdad

Posted: 11:07 PM ET

By JACK DOLAN McClatchy Newspapers

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a surprise visit to Iraq Sunday, discussing how the two countries will handle intelligence gathering and fight political corruption as the U.S. military begins to withdraw.

Pelosi's conversation with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and her counterpart in the Iraqi Parliament, Ayad al-Samarrai, came one day after the brother of Iraq's Trade Minister was caught trying to flee the country with a trunk full of cash and gold, seeking to escape corruption charges.

As the security situation has improved, political corruption has emerged as something of a national obsession in Iraq, with politicians and religious leaders of all stripes condemning it as a "second insurgency."

Oh Great! Just what our men and women in uniform need over there; Nancy Pelosi to meddle with the system. Hasn't she done enough over here? Heaven forbid anyone over there takes her advice.

Purple Spider   May 11th, 2009 12:12 am ET

What is Pelosi doing in Iraq? The armed services who are hard working and honest people, do not need this female who's rating is down at the bottom as Speaker of the House. How can she hope to be helpful there when she doesn't do her job here!

What ever happened to the Separation of Powers and guidelines for the various job descriptions of Senators and Congressmen? I have to state that uncontrolled Congregational Intervention in State Department affairs could not only get very expensive but actually harm ongoing negotiations unless House Speaker Pelosi was fully briefed before leaving-which I seriously doubt. My other concern would be that one of our Congressmen could be assassinated on one of these all expense paid by the taxpayer fact finding tours and THAT ladies and gents would top the Obama Photo-op over New York. If our Congress needs information about Iraq or anywhere else, they should call in the State Department-not be the State Department or think they are more important than the State Department-Stop your meddling Pelosi before you cause more grief than even you can handle!

Arcangel-You forgot power to the people and get your hand off of my pocketbook!

I lived in the Middle East and Central Asia for about six years, so I know the number one reason the US is there is because of oil. Britain, France, Turkey, China, Japan, and many other countries are all over the whole region, scrambling to get their share of oil. Everyone knows it.

Now, we're not exactly popular over there in the best of times, especially when they think that Bush and Cheney were trying to control everything like we did in the 1950s. We have seen that that didn't work very well and produced a huge backlash against us, so now Obama is just left to pick up the pieces, He's right to use a subtler, less aggressive and heavy-handed approach, and not take reckless gambles like Bush and Cheney.

Pelosi is trying to get the media, et al, off her back about the "waterboarding" incident (she lied), so in making this trip, she hopes it puts her in a better light – NOT!

Ted   May 11th, 2009 10:08 am ET

Nancy, how about fighting political corruption in Washington, Was not you who flew together with a bunch of other represantatives of the people to Italy to pick up a copy of a birth certificate of your father?
We, the taxpayers had to pay well over $100,000 for this little trip!

Dolce   May 11th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

BOYCOTT LARRY KING AND HIS SPONSORS. THEY PAY FOR THE DEFENSE OF CHILD MURDERERS.

JUSTICE FOR CAYLEE ANTHONY.

Nicole Rosey   May 11th, 2009 12:51 pm ET

Why does CNN feel compelled to provide yet again a platform for the Anthony's? If they are so intent on ensuring their daughter gets a fair trial for murdering their grand-daughter then perhaps you could accommodate that by not interviewing them until after the trial. How about focusing on families that really do have missing children- Adji Desir, Haleigh Cummings, Madeleine McCann. Please provide a platform for these families rather then flying the Anthony's out to CA, hotel and crab puffs all being paid by CNN.

Pietro Sirianni   May 11th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

The last time I saw a republicant near Iraq there was a "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" sign flying.

Noreen Rose   May 11th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Shame on CNN and Larry King for giving the Anthony's another platform. Stop watching CNN. I am !

Melinda   May 11th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Larry, DROP THE ANTHONYS FROM YOUR MAY 13th TIME SLOT. NO ONE WANTS TO SEE OR HEAR THEM.

Here's an idea, how about giving the victim, Caylee Marie Anthony, a voice. Become an advocate Larry. In today's society, you could do a lot of good in this area. Think about this instead of supporting an accused murderers family.

numbersgirl   May 11th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

Nancy Pelosi is a disgrace to America....how dare she show her face to our brave men and women in uniform...ugh!
