After Specter switch: buyer's remorse?

Posted: 10:46 PM ET

By /Politico

Nearly a week after Democrats welcomed Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter into the fold and Republicans got acquainted with Specter’s prospective challenger, Pat Toomey, both sides are showing signs of buyer’s remorse.

Suddenly Specter’s path to reelection as a Democrat is looking far from certain, as progressives recoil at some aspects of Specter’s voting record and two prominent candidates refuse to bow out. On the GOP side, the more Republicans look at the Pennsylvania political landscape, the more questions they have about whether Toomey is the right fit against Specter in a general election.

Specter’s initial warm welcome from his new party has given way to a more tepid greeting, as liberal groups chafe at Specter’s continued opposition to key elements of the party agenda — like the $3.4 trillion budget, which he voted against last week, and the Employee Free Choice Act.

Specter did little to ingratiate himself with his new party colleagues over the weekend, when he disputed a Wall Street Journal report that said he promised President Barack Obama he would loyally support his agenda.

I am an Independent Voter-always have been- and if given a choice of Tom Ridge and Arlen Specter, would go for Tom Ridge. The reason has to do with the quality of the men not political affiliation. My real wish is for Congress to start using all their talents and they are considerable to meet the challenges facing the Nation. I really think that TV should be removed from all Hearings and there should be frequent 15 minute recessions where the sponge bats used to resolve marital issues could be used across the aisle to resolve their personal disputes and get cracking on the National Problems-I really miss the good old days of sweat and backrooms, knock down drag out fights and Congressmen that actually had real emotions about their Country instead of pussy footing around on cocktail parties and getting big checks from lobbyist thatdidn't have America's best interest at heart!

Of course he's not really a Democrat. He's a moderate Republican who was pushed out of his own party by the Red Hots and True Believers. Maybe the Democrats will get his vote about half the time. At best, he'll fit in with the more conservative Democratic Senators from the Rocky Mountain states and the few Dixiecrats we have left in our party. And I'm glad most of them have go over to the Republicans, where they belong.

Specter, however, is not a Dixiecrat, but a man stuck in the middle–not that I'm sure if "moderates" have firm ideas or convictions on any subject, only "inclinations" well tempered by pragmatism and self-interest.

I do think we'd be better off with 3-5 parties in this country anyway. Then, the evangelicals could form a Christian Democratic Party and declaim about abortion and gays all they want; the Republicans could become the free market capitalist party, and we could become the Social Democratic Party. Then we'd have a Green party, and something else for the leftovers who couldn't quite fit with any of those.

Senator Specter was once a Democrat, however in 1965 he become a Republican, because that gave him a better chance to get elected. This man doesn´t care about the people he is supposed to represent, he is a turncoat who will do anything to achieve his own goal. I hope he will loose, what is that old poops doing in the Senate anyway?
Retire him, get some fresh blood into that old people´s club!

Senator Spector is an opportunist. I think he'd switch to the Nazi party if he believed it increased his chances at re-election.
