Swine Flu No Risk to Cats, Expert Says

Cats and dogs do not appear to be at risk from becoming infected with the swine flu virus that’s in the news for making 91 people sick in the United States as of Wednesday.

LKL Producer's Cat Yuckles is glad to know she's safe

Sharon Hietala, a professor at the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, headquartered at University of California, Davis, said that the H1N1 influenza viruses “have never been shown to transmit to dogs and cats.”

Hietala, an expert in clinical immunology and diagnostic techniques for infectious diseases in animals, added that at this point, humans only need to be concerned about protecting themselves from the swine flu, but there’s no need to worry about their pets becoming ill.

“The novel H1N1 influenza virus in the news right now is being transmitted from human to human; there have been no findings of this virus in any animals,” Hietala said. “Pig populations often have H1N1 influenza viruses, but not the particular novel H1N1 flu strain that is currently in the news.”

Good followup on the news that Farmers are worried about their pigs getting the "Swine" flu from humans. One Country is killing 300,000 pigs and India wants the vaccine from the U.S. that will protect their pigs from the flu. We live in a strange world!

First, CNN gotta get their act together on how to do a blog...go to USweekly and you'll see how easy they make it...i can't seem to figure out how to comment on a story on the CNN mainsite...Gawd!....anyway...as for the H1N1 flu(swine flu) people calm down...its gonna be fine...why are they closing schools in the States....and as for the students unable to graduate with their class...total paranoia!...do you really think there won't be any people in the crowd that traveled to Mexico, really!...who made this call, Joe Biden?....i'd demand a years tuition back for that foolishness...go to the Pub and have your own shindig!!....Congrats!

While the Administration is spending time renaming the flu, because of people getting offended by the name, they are also putting forth negative messages, causing a flu panic. Come on – it has not been proven that it is different than any other flu strain. If Mexico is the culptrit, then why hasn't the government closed off the border? This Administration might consider sending medicine of some sort to Mexico to help the needy, instead of "blowing off" with propaganda!

Let me get the picture here-One, the Administration did not change the name, it was requested by several countries after one Country decided to kill 300,000 pigs to prevent the infection. Two, the World Health Organization and CDC do not send out Pandemic Warnings lightly. Three, If you think we have paranoi here, travel to China, one degree of temperature and you are locked in your hotel room until the next plane ships you out-something to do with the "Bird" flu....Finally, I have a double question about schools. Would you send your child to a school that had a confirmed case of the flu? and What would your response be if your child came down with the H1N1 virus through th einaction of the school? Honest answers please-I am aretired teacher who has seen parents rail at principals because their kid was told to sit down on the bus!

The H1N1 Flu infection, also known as "Swine Flu", has been the subject of many reports in the media. Some questioned whether all this attention has been necessary. I looked up the data published by the CDC from April 23 until May 8, and according to a mathematical model derived from the data, the number of cases may reach 200,000 by May 23. The model also predicts that by June 8 almost 10% of the US population could be infected with virus. Was the media wrong initially in over-broadcasting the Swine Flu? I do not think so. I fear that the media, under pressure of not to over-broadcast, is playing down this infection that may potentially infect millions of people a month from now. Of course, like any other mathematical modeling, the prediction of it depends on the assumption that the natural history of the disease does not change in the future and its mode of spreading remains the same. For those who are interested in math, this is the equation that may be used to predict the total cumulative cases of H1N1 Flu in the US: log (Number of Cases) = 0.7830886 + 0.1464803 Time (Days). I hope I am wrong.

I recalculated the equation for predicting the total cumulative cases of H1N1 Flu in the US based on new data reported by the CDC since my last post. The new equation can be viewed as good news since it scales back the estimated cases by half, however it still predicts million of cases in the US by June 8, 2009. Here is the new equation: Log (Number of Cases) = 1.0005377 + 0.1349313 Days. It predicts that if the course of the disease remains the same, there will be about 16 million people infected with the virus by June 8, 2009. Why is the media silent about H1N1 Flu? Their silence is deafening.

The swine flu is scary! I hope no one else me the virus.
I feel bad for the little kids and elderly people who died
of it. Will the swine flue return during the flu season
this upcoming winter?
