Fmr. Amb. Joe Wilson on Dick Cheney: Torture Hypocrisy

Posted: 08:10 AM ET

By Former Ambassador Joseph Wilson

Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s reemergence on the political stage after his ignominious departure on Inauguration Day, eschewing the traditional handshake with his successor and the new president, is nothing if not ironic.

The most secretive individual in American politics is now calling for the selective release of documents that remain classified in one of his own files marked “Detainees.” We have also learned that a principal reason for having tortured senior al Qaeda detainees was not, in fact, to defend the Homeland, but rather to build the case for war with Iraq based on alleged ties between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. Despite literally hundreds of waterboarding sessions, there was no evidence developed that such a link existed. But that did not stop Cheney. He and others in the Bush administration simply asserted a link even though they knew one did not exist.

I know something about Cheney’s disinformation. When I, and a number of others, including a four-star Marine Corps general, Carleton Fulford, and the then-U.S. Ambassador to the West African nation of Niger, reported to the CIA that there was no evidence to support the assertion that Iraq had entered into a contract to purchase 500 tons of uranium yellowcake, our conclusions were ignored by the Bush administration. Instead, the president, in his State of the Union address in 2003, proclaimed a falsehood: “Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.” Then National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice was trotted out to assert that we could not afford to “wait for the smoking gun to come in the form of a mushroom cloud,” and Cheney himself asserted that Iraq was reconstituting its nuclear-weapons program.

Following members of a criminal association: Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Stern, including countless others, lied to the nation and fabricated false information to start a war. The real goal was not the security of the USA, but to get hold of the oil Iraq has under its soil.
This war costed up to now about 4,500 american soldiers dead, over 10,000 maimed for the rest of their lives, and over 100,000 dead iraqies, women, children and old men. We spent up to 1 trillion dollars on this war and we are still counting.
If you kill a person you either go to jail for a very long time, or you will be put to death. What kind of punishment is earned by those people who caused the death of over 100,000?
If we want to regain the respect of the world, then this affair must be thoroughly investigated, the truth published and all participants arrested, charged with mass murder and judged accordingly.
After the second WW the responsible german politicians and generals were tried and hanged, (too few for my liking!) It is time to clean up our house, noone should get away with mass murder.

In 2001, Cheney's company Halliburton was selling for $11.43 a share and facing a massive Asbestos Class Action Suite that could bankrupt the company-The U.S. Treasury, on the other hand, was enjoying a surplus from the Clinton Administration balancing the budget. After 8 years of Bush-Cheney, and a War In Iraq that saw Cheney's Company getting exclusive Defense Contracts totaling billions, Halliburton has a strong market rating and selling for over $40.00 a share and the U.S. Treasury and the Country are facing Bankruptcy. I have repeatedly asked for the media to explore whether or not Halliburton or a member Company has a lucrative Contract at GITMO Base because the only thing that can get Mr. Cheney on the Hated media and defending the security of the Country is a threat to one of his beloved Defense Contracts. Martha Stewart got sent to prison for insider trading-Cheney should get deported to iraq!

I don't understand the logic of the GOP. They are calling for an end to further prosecutions; but they are not calling for pardons for those who were following orders. Can someone explain this?
All or none of the guilty paties should share the consequences!?
Cheney's memos won't, WILL NOT, prove acts were diverted. It will only show what the victims of torture said.
I guarantee you it would take very little physical pain to get Cheney to say that GB wore dresses in the Oval Office.

The reporters have realised that Gibbs replaces low intellect with a poor sense of humor, smarminess, and have him twisting and squirming. He does NOT have command of the press conferennces.

According to "During a typical year in the United States, 30,000 to 50,000 persons die as a result of influenza viral infection." Google If this is true, what is the big deal about 60 deaths in Mexico?

Cheney invented the war in Iraq for his company Haliburton. War profiteering is an act of high treason. How many young men and women have died for Cheney's own financial well-being? When will the criminal trial begin?

Bill   April 27th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, it's probably a duck. Now substitute war profiteer for duck.

There needs to be a thorough investigation into this war.

I agree that there should be full investigations and prosecutions for the Bush administration. Not the lawyers or flunkies who produced what they were told to. What really gets me is that soldiers went to prison (for up to 10 years) while the Bush administration kept their mouths shut and let the blame fall onto a few select "bad apples" as they were called.
If nothing else, prosecute them fro falsely imprisoning out soldiers who were following orders. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield, Ashcroft, RIce. are treasonous cowards.

Joe, Joe, Joe......come on. Aren't we being a little "touchy" with the former Vice President and his negative comments on the Obama administration with regard to the torture memos and making our country less safe? After all we haven't had another attack on our soil since 9/11. So we sacrafice a few of our liberties and your wife's CIA identity was revealed.........trivialities Joe. So the taliban is regrouping in Afghanistan where we should have been focused in the first place......we "liberated" the Iraqi people!

Joe look on the bright side........oh yeah there isn't one.

This is such a joke..get .Pelosi first…in this bogus witch hunt. I heard on CNN Rep Conyers and Senator Leahy want the “Truth” committees…Is this the same Rep Conyers whose wife is under federal investigation for theft of public funds. Senator Leahy…Leaking Leahy…oh he has a history of leaking confidential material while in a sensitive intel committee….he had to resign from the committee…CIA death was linked to his leak.
These guys are great.

I don't think we have convinced our Arab Muslim Islamic Terrorists of Obama's memos and pictures of interrogation....they are laughing at us..and saying...."another western lie...this isn't torture....the drug cartel tortures...these Americans use water, catepillars, and have Doctors standing by...lying infidels...jihad to the lying infidels in the name of Allah.. Hey Mohammend this is going to be a piece a cake...and they'll give us lawyers too."

Dave of Detroit   April 27th, 2009 7:21 pm ET

I more than like Ike-President Eisenhower warned us to beware of the Hawks in Congress as they would take us to war for profit. When is the Obama Administration going to look into the need for 800 Military Bases around the world. Never mind waiting for Iraq to send troops to Afghanistan, start trimming the Base at Okinawa of Marines-I understand they have doiley making classes to calm these guys down and make them feel useful, How about the Base at Kuwait-Sadaam isn't around anymore? The huge Base in Germany can probably spare a few Divisions.....I really think this "Strategic Reserve" concept needs a rethink, sounds more like places for Pentagon Big Shots to go on Vacation although I have to admit Bloomberg's idea for a place for the General that approved the Photo -Op will get the seal of approval of New Yorkers-Can't wait to hear Letterman, Leno, and Colbert on this one!

ga   April 27th, 2009 7:22 pm ET

Bush and Cheney proved, majority does not rule. If it did, we wouldn't had 8 years of total neglect.

hugh ~ california   April 27th, 2009 7:37 pm ET

@Terry, TX,
What? A "bogus witch hunt," you say? Here you go again changing the subject and running down more Democrats whenever possible!

Terry, TX   April 27th, 2009 7:52 pm ET

hugh ~ california....lighten beats the dead horses you and your celebrity world in California beat on...go back to the Think Tank in California and regroup....and try to fix your state election is bankrupt...and the best you can do is blame the GOP for what... Constipation. Sorry it is bogus....and Pelosi first.

Pietro Sirianni   April 27th, 2009 8:15 pm ET

Don't listen to Terry. He's from Texas and we're selling that state to Mexico for a case of Corona and $50.

The Cheney/Bush administration was a tyrannical money sucking machine that ruined our great nation.

And once again.....

A DEMOCRAT is saving our country.

hugh ~ california   April 27th, 2009 11:22 pm ET

@Terry, TX,
Don't put words in my mouth Texican! There you go again, running down Democrats whenever possible. Also, there are plenty of celebrities from Texas, so don't go blabbing that celebrity crap. You worry about your home state Bubba!

Bush and Cheney were about deception in every way, from the war in Iraq to the deregulation of Wall Street. They lied, cheated and ripped off hard working American taxpayers; They sold out America in every way–took our jobs overseas, cheapened our labor supply, took away our health care, and caused massive fraud on Wall Street by taking away all the precautions that were put into place after the Great Depression. Restore the Uptick Rule and restore honor to the American system of finance. Get Real America, Obama is the only "good" and "smart" thing to come out of the last 8 years. Hopefully it won't take him 8 years to clean up the Bush mess!

Bill   April 29th, 2009 12:32 am ET

After dumping 10 billion dollars every month into this war, you'd think by now the Republicans would know when to shut up about spending. Not to mention the fact that they have voted against every single one of Obama's economic proposals thus far...if they ever want to be able to blame Obama for anything, they better start voting with him, because as of right now all our economic problems are still the fault of the Republicans and the Bush administration.
