Jim Carrey: The Judgement on Vaccines is NOT in

Posted: 11:38 AM ET

By actor Jim Carrey

Recently, I was amazed to hear a commentary by CNN's Campbell Brown on the controversial vaccine issue. After a ruling by the 'special vaccine court' saying the Measles, Mumps, Rubella shot wasn't found to be responsible for the plaintiffs' autism, she and others in the media began making assertions that the judgment was in, and vaccines had been proven safe. No one would be more relieved than Jenny and I if that were true. But with all due respect to Ms. Brown, a ruling against causation in three cases out of more than 5000 hardly proves that other children won't be adversely affected by the MMR, let alone that all vaccines are safe. This is a huge leap of logic by anyone's standards. Not everyone gets cancer from smoking, but cigarettes do cause cancer. After 100 years and many rulings in favor of the tobacco companies, we finally figured that out.

The truth is that no one without a vested interest in the profitability of vaccines has studied all 36 of them in depth. There are more than 100 vaccines in development, and no tests for cumulative effect or vaccine interaction of all 36 vaccines in the current schedule have ever been done. If I'm mistaken, I challenge those who are making such grand pronouncements about vaccine safety to produce those studies.

Jim & Jenny,

I couldn't agree with you more, but I feel our problems are far large than a few vaccines. Almost nothing we take into our bodies today is safe. But you hardly here any concerns being voiced. The problems:
Profitability of vaccines!, Profitability of food! Profitability period....... This is where the battle is. Apply pressure, make business change the way they are doing business.

Nice work bringing to light an issue few people think about! Too bad there are so many of these types of issues.

Mr. Carrey,

When they give Dr. Salk an Oscar, then maybe I'll take this pseudo-scientific babble of yours a bit more seriously. Until then, it's incredibly dangerous to propagate this nonsense about one of medicine's greatest successes, most particularly when the alleged "evidence" has been so thoroughly discredited. This lack of real scientific understanding is right on par with claiming the dinosaurs died 5000 years ago, global warming has nothing to do with human activity, and beer pong spreads herpes.

In the meantime, children are now getting once-rare infectious diseases due to lack of vaccination, and some of them are dying. Perhaps you should do a little research into herd immunity before mouthing off next time.

They're not exactly giving the head of the American Medical Association a forum at, say, the Golden Globes, so I remain flabbergasted as to why you with your immense medical background are given a chance to spout such dangerous poppycock to an international audience. If people are listening to you, you're a potential accessory to killing a child. I hope to god they are not.

Stick to what you do best, and maybe we can look forward to "Yes Man 2".

It isn't as though the medical profession and pharmacuetical companies are actually being bereft in their duties to patients and customers. The problem is statistics. The "bean counter" syndrome-Why is there an adverse reaction to any medication by a certain percentage of the population? I can honestly say that I don't think anyone has an answer to this-believe me, a whistle blower would make a fortune if any tangible proof existed and that is the problem that Jim and Jenny have. If we can make the vaccines any safer and I understand that mercury as a preservative has been replaced, I would be all for doing whatever it takes. Maybe the real answer lies at a cellular level and a specific gene in Autistic children could be found. I have no idea if research is being done in this area but the growing number of children with Autism strongly indicates that it should be studied and researched!

Prevention of autism by abandoning vaccines is dangerous advice for parents. Millions of children around the world are saved from dangerous diseases by vaccination.

Jim Carey is on a crusade because he's in a relationship
with the mother of an autistic child.Does that mean anyone
should pay attention ot this guy with mental issues of his own?

hugh ~ california   April 22nd, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Jim Carey is a real showman, but he cannot beat the Palin freak-show saga!

Terry, TX   April 23rd, 2009 1:22 am ET

Jimmy Carey writing an article in the Huffington Post on your show. Because you think it's so...doesn't make it so. Too many factors...the most of which is scientific. I come from a huge family...on both sides... 300 hundred at autism...everybody had their autism...breast cancer runs on one side of family...diabetes on the other. I would also have to know of the drug use and alcohol during the pregnancy....hmm. Also what about head fall down all the time....see....too many unknowns. Mr. Carey if you don't vaccinate your future children...don't...but you've not convinced me....and anything showing on Huffington even less. Californians are the only ones who pull up that piece of trash.

One only has to research and do so consitantly to see the repeated pattern and see hat all tha glitters is not gold. Whereas when I was vaccinated many years ago, there were a few vaccines, and I was a sturdy kid, and I did get sick, but I lived just.As our enviorment has become more challenging[polluted] and our foods, water, and gens have become more compromised, the frequency of illesses has increased many times over. Sometimes it takes 30 years for illness to show up, but then there are medical procedures to take care of that eh? I did not know anyone as a child who had had Altizermers[sp] but I did have an Uncle wh woke on Navy ships, necular powered, and died very slowly as his brain rotted. I ate very little fastfood as a kid, it was not aviable and we could not partake, but my kids ate plenty lng wth homecooked meals ,and their bodies look 10 years older than their actual age.
I have a grandson with OMS, even more vague and unual from autism used to be. Why??? Doctors who do not study this have no freaking idea what it is they are seeing manifest and valuable time was lost for this 3 year old. Much brain damage happening....
Get real.Get empowered, as Mr Carrey has, as many parents do. It just might be the key to your health and well being. He and Jenny just happen to be in the entertainment industry; they are never the less human, human people, wo are helping those open to it

Dear Mr Carry,
I respect your view and thoughts. I have a great nephew with a form of Autism, it's called high function Autism. And I do believe it should be the parents' choice. My three children and all my grandchildren were vaccinated, and I never regreted this choice because I have personal seen children in my family go blind, deaf, mentally disabled, and even died from the these diseases.
There needs to be more focus toward research on Autsim because I believe Autsim has been around a lot longer than vacinations, it just wasn't reconized and issolated in the past, therefore missed diagnosed in the past.

Hello, My children all were vaccinated 2 are grown and 2 are minors but , years ago they did not have as many vaccination requirements as these recent years. I had always been worried even 27 years ago with my 1st child getting shots....As I refused shots to be given to my 9 yr old.
Reason being, they wanted to shoot him with 7-10 different ones at once. I felt this was absurd. So, I refused any new ones at the time that were reccommended in addition to the normal ones. My children all are healthy and seem to be okay. Their Diet is an important factor for better health. Maybe, problems arise when chiidren are over-immunized. If and when a small child doesn't feel well, or goes to get his/her shots they may be not in the best health to begin with or just infants growing and of course common sense would dictate that his/her body can't tolerate additional toxins injected into their small body. The injected virus might cause disfuntion to the already weakened but, not recognized) body. The evidence that autism (and other problems that happen) can and has occurred should be able to prove this.
Most of the vaccines given today were not given years ago. No chicken pox vaccine, no flu vaccine, no hepatitis vaccines, ect. There were no major outbreaks in all those years with kids not getting these. . I believe there are too many vaccines given too closely in time frames to too small of children and there have been No proof that this is not causing problems. .
We CANNOT stop vaccinating our children but, we need better regulations. Review how they used to give the shots and not so many all at once this all needs to be considered..

New FDA Opinion on Mercury, Vaccines & Autism · 2009-01-27 14:30

To date, a number of epidemiological studies independently conducted by different investigators using various designs in different samples and countries, (e.g., Sweden, Denmark, United States, United Kingdom and Canada), all have consistently provided evidence of no association between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism, despite the fact that different methods were used and different populations were examined. 14 With the exception of the study performed by Fombonne, et al., and reported in 2006, these studies were reviewed by the IOM, which concluded that they “consistently provided evidence of no association between thimerosal-containing vaccine vaccines and autism.“ 15 In addition, a recently published study by Schecter, et al., (2008), evaluated whether reduced exposure to thimerosal has been associated with a decrease in reported autism. 16 The researchers analyzed the California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) data to estimate time trends in children reported in California. The authors “found that the prevalence of autism for children reported to the DDS has continued to increase consistently for children born from 1989 through 2003, inclusive of the period when exposure to thimerosal containing vaccines declined. Moreover, since 2004, the absolute increase and the rate of increase in DDS clients 3-5 years with autism were higher than those in DDS clients of the same ages with any eligible condition, including autism.” (Schechter, et al. 2008). In addition, the authors state that “these time trends are inconsistent with the hypothesis that thimerosal exposure is a primary cause of autism in California.” Id. (emphasis added). These findings are consistent with other recent findings, e.g., Fombonne, et al. (2006).

Not only is there increasing and consistent compelling clinical evidence for a lack of association between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism, in addition, a recent study published by Thompson, et al. (2007), does not support a causal association between early exposure to mercury from thimerosal-containing vaccines and immune globulins and neuropsychological functioning in children aged 7 to 10 years old. 17 The study evaluated a total of 42 neuropsychological outcomes, including speech and language skills, executive function/attention, and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) symptomatology. The study was designed and interpreted with extensive input from independent outside consultants and the data set is publicly available. The study enrolled 1047 children between the age of 7 and 10 years (born 1993-1997) who had received thimerosal-containing vaccines and evaluated a possible association between current neuropsychological performance and exposure to mercury during the prenatal period, the neonatal period, and the first 7 months of life. The investigators concluded that their “study does not support a causal association between early exposure to mercury from thimerosal-containing vaccines and immune globulins and deficits in neuropsychological functioning at the ages of 7 to 10 years” Thompson, et al., 2007. The few statistical significant associations that were detected were equally divided among better and poorer outcomes and may have been by chance findings due to the large number of statistical tests performed. According to the authors, one finding related to motor and phonic tics in boys may suggest that further study assessment is warranted.

In summary, the studies Fombonne, et al. (2006), Thompson, et al. (2007), and Schechter, et al. 2008, all provide further support that thimerosal exposure of children from vaccines is not associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism.

This is not to say that vaccines have no side effects, that is why there IS a vaccine court; or that you should be unconcerned about environmental mercury – but the consequences of mercury poisoning are not at all similar to autism or Aspergers syndrome.

Meanwhile, the consequences of not vaccinating children are very real and potentially far worse than the normal level of AS spectrum consequence. Risking disability and death on behalf of your children in order to indulge your eye-contact fetish is neglegent – and certainly indulgent of hysteria that leads to very, very bad parentiing priorities.
