Tonight: The Obama's Overseas!

Posted: 06:50 PM ET

Tonight, the Obama's cross the pond and take England by storm – and meet the Queen!  The U.K. appears to be wild about the Obama's.  art-obamasqeii1 Today was about the fashion, the food, the frenzy!  And the gifts!  What gifts?  The iPod of course.  The president and Mrs. Obama gave Queen Elizabeth II an iPod and the queen, in return, gave the Obama's a framed autographed picture of herself and Prince Philip.  Seriously, that's what they gave each other.  Seriously.

William Courtland   April 1st, 2009 7:58 pm ET

Your political system:

It is all about the President: but your nation is not run by a President: it is run by you the people.

How can a nation be run by its people if your representative is covering a population the size of some small nations?

So as the party began the Clerk of the House of Congress was nominated from the party: and the party has not stopped since.

They have allocated most of the duties of a Representative to a secretary: with the secretary removes the burden of office: and replaces it with the ability to grow a district beyond the Constitutionally required size: and since the Clerk responsible for correcting the number of districts to the population census is also a representative: why would they strip themselves of salary and power just to correct the system for the sake of the government by the people: they won't.

A member of the legislative branch of Congress is only meant to be reimbursed for the true duty which is provided to the Nation by that individual member... but things changed: the house stopped growing and so now the nation needs to fit inside of a building far to small.

You the people are now represented by a secretary: and the representative could never truly represent an individual in the House.

You nation is failing because of this: yet the President has no power to correct this: it is the duty of the House itself: he can only ajourn the house until they agree to correct the problem...

So your tax dollars pay for the secretaries and staffs of the Representatives: and thus destroy the true expectation of a representative democratic government. To be represented at the discretion of a secretary.

The house is no longer of the people: it is now a bureaucracy of pure constitutional irresponsibility: so they party on... dude. And go ahead and complain to a Representatives secretary: they will not even tell their employer as it will threaten their own jobs.

The representative is meant to afford their own secretary: but one should not really be required if census apportionment was true to the Constitution; as close to 30 000 without going under for each district as divided by the State.

Your nation is no longer a nation of the people, it is still elected by the people: but not controlled by them, it is for government first and the people second, and only of people willing to party.

If your nation does not respect the house rules: as declared in the constitution: the nation will destroy itself in the endless party. A party is unconstitutional: as it question the oath of office taken to the effect of serving the President: in representation of the people: democratic party president: republicans are in violation of that oath. Parties do not belong in the federal house: they have balls for such things.

So they take a salary illegally: they do not correct to the Constitutional census standard without amending it: then they afford secretaries to do the jobs they can no longer manage as an individual representative because the district are too big: so what is the point in even electing people: do you elect their secretaries as well... no?

So when a secretary feels like blowing off an individual: who is accountable? Yes please make the citizen make up for the irresponsibility of representation: so when it is a valid idea: they need to convince a secretary and then restart with the real Representative?

But of course what music I would give the queen is more important? Than reporting to the people about the true functionality and the dishonest controlling of Congress... she has Elton John on call... and people of high calibur musical artistry find their highest calling in musical playing for the pleasure or for the entertainment of the royals. What higher stage could a violinist reach?

Alex   April 1st, 2009 7:59 pm ET

If it was given to royalty shouldn't the iPod be called a "We-Pod"?
As in, "We are not amused by this type of gift!"

Travis   April 1st, 2009 8:04 pm ET

For the queen's iPod: ABBA's "Dancing Queen"

Future (hopefully)Kidney Donor   April 1st, 2009 8:30 pm ET

Dear Mr.King,

I am a proud wife to a wondeful man in his 30's whom recently received a kidney after being on dialysis. Unlike Natalie, he developed CKD through natural causes, NOT from years of substance abuse. Also, because of his age, there is a strong possibility that he will require another one, hopefully from me.

I watched your show w/Natalie Cole & was extremely upset w/the whole "sales pitch" to plead for a kidney, how dare your show solitice for her when there are so many other "non-celebrity" people out there also in dire need for ALL organs, not just kidneys (maybe you should look at some of the waiting lists throughout the nation)...

Your show failed in that it should have concentrated on the need for more to participate in organ transplants in general & NOT on Natalie's plead for help.

Don't get me wrong, I do feel for her, but I also feel for all the others whom are part of our support groups that has much worse stories.

I just wanted to drop a note to let you know of my frustrtaion; Try not to be so narrow-minded, understanding that there are thousands others in the same boat as Natalie whom are not fortunate enough to be one of your guests.

Very poor taste on your show's (and CNN's) behalf.

Extremely disappointed!

@William Courtland
Will you ever STOP with the novelette sized blog entries! PLEASE! Enough already!

President Obama is on a diplomatic mission that includes the G-20 summit. I don't need to read a lecture on your governmental philosophy. You are absurd!

gewe   April 1st, 2009 8:45 pm ET

Jo Ann, Ohio   April 1st, 2009 9:08 pm ET

Anderson is wrong. If Obama thought carefully before saying things he would not have made that comment about the Special Olympics or the "Typical White" person comment and too many others that I don't have the time or patience to list here.

Jo Ann, Ohio   April 1st, 2009 9:10 pm ET

Those ridiculous gifts the Obamas gave to PM Brown and Queen Elizabeth lacked imagination and thoughtfulness.

chandra   April 1st, 2009 9:11 pm ET

Tell Anderson that the Queen had requested the I pod containing the videos of her State Visit to Washington DC last year.

James   April 1st, 2009 9:11 pm ET

The Obama simply, truly are Kennedy-esque. There is no denying it. I believe these scenes we see from London today will become a part of our American story as the old black and white footage of the glamorous Kennedy's have.

Jo Ann, Ohio   April 1st, 2009 9:13 pm ET

Wow they are sure laying it on thick about the Obamas on LKL tonight!

Karthik Boominathan   April 1st, 2009 9:14 pm ET

Ita nice to see that The White House Family gave the queen an ipod. A little bit of America given to Britan.... even though ipods are sold world wide!

Paul   April 1st, 2009 9:14 pm ET

Dear Mr. King,

Why are we more concerned about Michelle obama's dresses or the diplomatic relations of an ipod, then the real facts and purposes of the summit. What is really being accomplished?

Rick   April 1st, 2009 9:15 pm ET

Politics aside, the Obama's represent a major milestone for our country and it's good to them on the world stage.

Kelli from Tampa   April 1st, 2009 9:16 pm ET

Jo Ann, Ohio   April 1st, 2009 9:17 pm ET

Greg (Columbus OH)   April 1st, 2009 9:20 pm ET

I am once more proud of our country and hopeful for the future despite the current economic crisis. President Obama is the person we need right now.

Marlene Green   April 1st, 2009 9:20 pm ET

I am so proud to see Michelle & Barack Obama represent the United States so beautifully! Bravo to them both! No matter your political persuasion you must admit that they make us look great!

Kathy   April 1st, 2009 9:21 pm ET

It is wonderful to see great representation for our country.

Georgia   April 1st, 2009 9:21 pm ET

President Obama and his wife, Michelle are a wonderful representation for the United States and what we stand for. I think the Queen would say the same!

Larry from Chicago   April 1st, 2009 9:21 pm ET

This president is someone that understands the world we live in, and can use that understanding to better our position on the world stage. Isn't it nice to have a president we can feel proud of....for a change?

JoAnn   April 1st, 2009 9:21 pm ET

I am so proud of my President and First Lady! They look beautiful and really give America a good go for a change. I think they will make a difference in this world!

Gail Zanger malibu, ca   April 1st, 2009 9:21 pm ET

A great idea for a gift is a sterling silver photo frame whti an emblem of the whitehouse , and a signed photo of the Obamas inside.
Learn from the Queens gift and then no need to think much, it works for all . gail

I LOVE MIchelle, I really do, but that dress she wore to the dinner did not work for her. The top wasn't flattering to her body, and it was inappropriate for the occasion. None of the other women wore anything that was so bare . . .

Jo Ann, Ohio   April 1st, 2009 9:22 pm ET

Jackie never wrote a racist thesis, that is the big difference.

JAMES   April 1st, 2009 9:22 pm ET

President and First Lady Obama are tall.....the Queen should have purchased an elegant milk crate and stood on it so they could see eye to eye.

Simeon Peter   April 1st, 2009 9:22 pm ET

Fabulous ... like the President said, "his story would have not happened anywhere else than in the United States", we all need to be proud of the president ... 100% representation!

loretta Goldstein   April 1st, 2009 9:22 pm ET

I think the President and Michelle Obama are doing a great job.
I am so proud of them and so happy he is our President.

Shirley   April 1st, 2009 9:22 pm ET

The Queen should point out to the Obama's that she often vacationed in Kenya in the 1950's, and she was in Kenya when her father died and she instantly became Queen.

Li   April 1st, 2009 9:23 pm ET

President Obama and Michelle look fabulous! Unfortunately, to the shock of the critics, everyone loves the Obama's. They are doing an EXCELLENT job!!!!!!!

Zaynub   April 1st, 2009 9:23 pm ET

I think this meeting was very sucessful, especially compared to Richard Nixon! One thing

wendy sullivan   April 1st, 2009 9:23 pm ET

Our world needs healing and I believe that the Obama's will be instrumental in beginning the healing process by listening and challenging others to cooperate with the US and each other!

angela   April 1st, 2009 9:23 pm ET

Obama has a way of just warming people up, because he is unfiltered and makes charming little gaffs, it makes him likable. He is likeable, he is authentic. Its not about looks, but I am so down with Michelle wearing JCREW, I could scream in happiness. It is just so unpretentious, we dont have to wear a stupid celeb knock off, she is one of us for now at least.

Ruben   April 1st, 2009 9:23 pm ET

Listen right before the camera's start clicking, Her Majesty mutters 'It's the same thing every time, isn't it?". She doesn't seem to eager to stand around and take pictures, does she?

Jo Ann, Ohio   April 1st, 2009 9:23 pm ET

Jackie Kennedy made her mark without the Internet and all the modern communication devices that we have now.

Aaron   April 1st, 2009 9:23 pm ET

I feel that this was a must-have vacation/trip for the Obama's. I also feel that the iPod was a wonderful gift for the queen 🙂

Well congratulation dear neighbor Americans finally because of your new President and his lovely wife you have now a change to become popular or let us say liked internationally.

Again congratulation.

Eric Munson   April 1st, 2009 9:24 pm ET

The image of the Obamas meeting the Queen is simply for the ages!!!

penny   April 1st, 2009 9:24 pm ET

I think the Obama did a great job, meeting the queen, and i definately think the queen was just as excited to meet the Obamas as they were to meet her it was wonderful to see.

ann   April 1st, 2009 9:24 pm ET

At a quick glance of one of your photos tonight, did Mr. & Mrs. Obama have their elbows on the dinner table? No one else seemed to.

Jo Ann, Ohio   April 1st, 2009 9:24 pm ET

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Michele   April 1st, 2009 9:25 pm ET

What an awesome Job President Obama and First Lady Obama are doing representing America abroad!

Gwen Oller   April 1st, 2009 9:25 pm ET

How wonderful to see two intelligent, elegant world leaders, with their equially intelligent and elegant spouses. It provides hope for all the world that we will survive these troubling times and come out stronger in the end.

Zaynub   April 1st, 2009 9:25 pm ET

I think this visit was very sucessful! The Queen seemed to like the Obamas and they samed to do the samed.

janel from St. Paul   April 1st, 2009 9:25 pm ET

I'm immensely proud of and hopeful that the Obama's are representing our country in London.

Certainly they won't gain everything they wish for, but they will extend the good will of our country and be more conciliatory with other nations. This is a terrific change from the past eight years!

Linet Mckenzie   April 1st, 2009 9:25 pm ET

I think the Obamas is very very smart, and the world would like to meet them she is a very true person and he is a terrific person we could not of chose a smarter President If the media and all the bad mouted persons should leave them to run the country.

Renaldo   April 1st, 2009 9:25 pm ET

I think that Obama will say what ever he has to in order to advance his socialist agenda in the US. And since most of Europe is socialist already he is in his natural enviroment.
Unfortunately, like all of his other social programs, we are paying for his trip to sell us down the river.

Marguerite Batey   April 1st, 2009 9:25 pm ET

I am just thrilled to see the Queen and Prince Philip accepting them so well.
Mrs. O. looks stunning, and it just makes me even prouder of our country at how our First Couple
are presenting themselves over there.
Hope you have more coverage on this positive image.
Thanks for the show, Larry.

Mel Lyons   April 1st, 2009 9:25 pm ET

The President and First Lady have made us PROUD with their behavior and class. They are in the process of bringing not only the US together but making steps to bring the world together. As the English would say GOOD SHOW!

sandra barner   April 1st, 2009 9:25 pm ET

I love the Obama's. I think he is doing a superb job in the presidency and is accomplishing more in his first 100 days than anyone. Who else would have come into this mess with so much energy and assertivness. God Bless him and them.

lionel murillo   April 1st, 2009 9:25 pm ET

we are all being deceived by our president obama. This new world order which is coming is the begining of his deception but its too late because we can not stop him. he also has the biggest population behind him. the signs are in the stars in the bible on tv and in the weather. everyone please wake up

Karthik Boominathan   April 1st, 2009 9:27 pm ET

David de Lusignan   April 1st, 2009 9:27 pm ET

Karthik Boominathan   April 1st, 2009 9:28 pm ET

Kevin thank you for helping me prove my point!

Yvonne Procter   April 1st, 2009 9:28 pm ET

As a Brit living and working in the US, I can only say I am tremendously proud of both of our countries tonight. Forget the idiots, they are buried under every rock. I am completely convinced that HRH loved the Obamas and I thought the Obamas were just perfect. As the POTUS said earlier "delightful!"

It has been a delight for me to watch the fabulous coverage.

PS. The Queen might be old, but she is one hip chick! The ipod was a hit!

kelly armstrong   April 1st, 2009 9:29 pm ET

We voted for You Mr. President and dont understand why our country is going bankrupt and we are as a nation watching the President galivant around the world only to give the queen an I-pod which she obviously can afford! Im a small business owner who employs about 70 people! We are not laying off people yet the bills he is passing is killing small businesses around the country! The big companies are laying off people left and right. Why would you kill companies who are helping not just the educated or skilled? What about the "COMMON MAN OR WOMAN" What about the laborer ? Who is paying for this pilgramage or even the I-pod !THE COMMAN MAN? Figures! Typical politician who writes a bunch of great things in a book and changes when he becomes President! Well Mr. president Im not into politics. Im into people maybe you need to go back to being common never forget your ROOTS! You were suppose to change the world because of the change that has happend by you becoming President. You have forgotten the COMMON PEOPLE! Just when we thought you were the real deal! We found out you are a COMMON politician!!!! How disappointing!

Tara in Spartanburg   April 1st, 2009 9:29 pm ET

I would like to commend the Obama's on a stellar performance! They are representing America overseas at it's truest. The land of opportunity where dreams can come true. That is the biggest statement that they make to the world. And I love that they are real, hardworking, dedicated proud Americans that is what the world should see. Not just the silver spoons.

Paul   April 1st, 2009 9:29 pm ET

bob thompson   April 1st, 2009 9:29 pm ET

i'm so proud of president obama and his family visiting in europe, with their statesman, royalty, and the people on the street......
we couldn't be better represented, and i'lll bet the people across the pond will like him just as much as we do.......he's terriffic......

Hi from NY   April 1st, 2009 9:30 pm ET

I come from Europe and I think that the gift of the ipod to the Queen was perfect! Obama is from America and we, europeans, see America as the Country of the future of the modern tecnology. What Queen Elizabeth needs? a boring piece of antique? of course she won't use the ipod, but anytime she sees it she will smile and thinks of the progress that America did having an Afro/ American President. The Obamas are fantistic and they rappresent the futur, our future, here in America and in my old Europe.

Jo Ann, Ohio   April 1st, 2009 9:30 pm ET

Funny thing is no one is talking about the G-20 Summit. Isn't that what they are all over there to cover?

Diane Leslie   April 1st, 2009 9:30 pm ET

I grew up hearing my parents speak about The Kennedy's and how proud it made them feel when that glamorous couple represented our country in foreign lands. I've never experienced that feeling with a first couple – until today.

robert young   April 1st, 2009 9:30 pm ET

Your sub-title: "Obama meets Queen of England ", is completely wrong. She is The Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I am astounded that many highly paid American journalists get this wrong.

Cheers , Robert Young

Hi Larry:

Great Show: United States could not have had any suitable representative at the G20 in this difficult economic time than Obama. Both the President and the First Lady dazzled everyone in London. Obama started on point, taking a very gnawing but essential question from a British reporter, but addressed the question intelligently. When it comes down to US foreign policy now, Obama Administration is a winner, with time, United States is returning to the Head Table at International Political Arena where it rightfully deserves.

Who is responsible for teaching the Obama's about protocol in the UK? I am a British citizen, living in the US and am very disappointed in the lack of respect the Obama's showed the Queen. Mrs. Obama did not curtsy when meeting the Queen, as other Heads of State wives have done (see clip on Mrs. Sarkozy meeting the Queen). Pres. Obama shook the Queen's hand with both hands instead of one, a big no no. Mrs. Obama also put her arm around the Queen later on. Another faux pas. Who is advising the White House? Did Gordon Brown return the DVD's to the Obama's, since no one happen to know that the TV systems are different(US is NTSC, UK is Pal) in different countries. Couldn't they have given a gift with some thought, other than an Ipod, which she already has? With 500 people going to the UK, not one knew any manners or customs. Maybe they just don't care.

Why in the world all the comparisons of Michelle to Jackie? Michelle is her own person that is obvious has a lot to offer other than what and who's designer dresses she wears! She's more "down to earth" than I ever remember Jackie K. being! As for the Queen, how would she not immediately like Michelle or the president? They are a breath of fresh air!!!

lela morgan   April 1st, 2009 9:36 pm ET

Larry, I love the look on your face! Ican tell you are chewing nails right now! You are a John and Cindy man, as all of CNN is!
I think Michelle is beautiful and what is more important, is she is geuine! CNN has tried to rip Michelle apart> She is strong, and I respect women that are strong. I think Michelle does not need expensive clothes to make her look good! She would look good in anything!
Larry I like this love fest, it usually has been a love fest with the Republicans like Limbaugh & the McCains! CNN has went so mean! You never hear a good word about Democrats! i watched CNN for twenty years. It became so hard and sad to see you guys let the Dick Cheneys and McCains rule your media outlet. Have you heard Ed Shulz will have his new show on MSNBC Monday! MSNBC has all voices on! I love that. Just checked in for a minute! Cheer up Larry, put a smile on your face! The American people are smiling! Can you believe Cindy McCain wearing 300,000 dallors on her body in one night? All programs on CNN stick together also!

Thanks Lela M.

Hats off to two wonderful ladies.

Their pictures today of First Lady Michelle and The Queen were like night meeting with day. priceless!

It reminds me of a time during the Queen's visit to The Bahamas when my daughter was about 6 years old. She wanted to meet and touch the queen. Michelle, thanks you did it for us.

G20 is not American Idol. Fix the economy.

Hi Larry,

it´s really funny how many people talking about Mrs. Obama – she can not be more famous at the moment then Mrs. Kennedy was it in the sixteees. It´s her first trip to Europe and nothing else is coming up toningt what she has been doning today and what kind of clothes she has wearing today.

There are some important facts at she G20 summit then this type of
informations. As a german I like CNN for the best political team on television, but I did wont to here first, what Mrs. Omama trying to do the whole day.

I find it troubling that Michelle Obama had lunch with Naomi Cambell, a convicted felon in the U.S. Cambell assaulted her maid and was given a sentence that included community service on the streets of New York. This was not her first offence and she is known to be verbally abusive and violent. Perhaps the powers that be could have come up with a more suitable guest to have lunch with Michelle.

People are insinuating that President Obama may have bowed to
the Queen. In my opinion, these people don't seem to realize that
it is quite difficult to respectfully talk to someone shorter than yourself with enough show of humility without appearing as if you bowed. Another thing they have failed to observe is that President Obama's charisma is greatly embodied in his articulation, eloquence, sense of humor and above all, his glaring humility. Once you see him, his absolute humility will be written all over him!

Boy…..larry, thank God that Michelle is black and not white…..Ha haa!

Why? Glad you asked.

If she were white, there would have been a lot more subtle and suggestive Budweiser ads plastered all over America suggesting that black men are out enjoying the company of white women while black women are left with her sad self alone and sitting at a table clutching a glass of alcohol for comfort….

Be advised, Michelle is only ONE of the many black women as beautiful, sexy, super mother, woman and wife, educated and NOT aggressive according to popular belief….Lol

My question is, why does the media always show as if MOST black men are with white women? Are there no white men with black women?

How many secretly lust after black women but fear what friends and family would say if they date one?

Maybe the next person or company who make such suggestions should ask who unashamedly throws whose self at who….ha haaaa

I do not drink and if I did, as a black woman, I would boycott Budweiser beers.

Of all the respected members of British society that the wife of the President of the United States could invite to dinner during her early tenure asa first lady and brief UK visit, she chose Naomi Campbell, who's standing in the UK sits on the level of Paris Hilton. This a disgrace to the United States and an insult to the people of the United Kingdom. It shows terribly poor judgement at a time when the world is looking to the United States to begin exercising good judgement. Is she on official duty or just satisfying personal whims?

There is something cold about Mr. Obama. I truly believe he is the anti-christ. With a car nicknamed the beast and such a rise to power as quick as he has. And everyone thinking he is the savior of the world...He is screwing things up in the U.S. and I think the rest of the world better watch. His lack of courtesy to their HRH's and those gifts he gave no thought behind them....

Marina   April 1st, 2009 9:53 pm ET

Mrs. Obama does not know how to dress appropriately for formal meetings. While I love going sleeveless myself, I would consider it highly inapproriate for a formal business occasion. I am much younger than Mrs. Obama and I know that, moreso because it is not yet the season also to be going sleeveless.

Also pushing out the host (Prince Phillip) for a photo op with the Queen is also highly inappropriate as a guest.

The Obamas need to learn some etiquette before meeting with heads of public from other countries.

Now I dare CNN to publish this comment, since as usual, they are busy going RAH RAH with the Pom Poms where the Obamas are concerned and rarely if ever publish any criticisms of teh Obamas!

Apparently what was in the iPod was something the Queenn concerned a nice gift. Video presentation of her trip to America, that was the context of what was involved in the iPod and the gift. Why do people make such a big thing over that, they also gave her a signed copy of music written by one of her favorite songwriters, why isn't anyone mentioning that. All you people who think you know better don't know squat, and need to stop saying what is appropiate and what isn't when YOU won't know what to bring.

Michelle Obama should never have worn a sweater, with pushed up sleeves no less, in meeting the Queen of England. Why does the news media ignore this fashion faux pas? A suit jacket would have been the appropriate choice. Who the heck is advising her? This was not a casual affair and sending a message, when meeting the Queen, that it is "casual Friday" was the wrong venue. What would be the reaction if President Obama had shown up at Buckingham Palace wearing a sweater cardigan?

Absolute nonsence that the UK and France don't deal with diversity as well as the USA. I am mixed race and was born and raised in London, I moved to the USA last year and more racism in the USA than I ever did while living in the UK for 30 years.

Affordable Clothing??? Not sure what your definition of 'affordable' is but that J Crew outfit is well over $500! Not sure if that's part of the American woman's recession fashionista budget! AND, the Toleda & Wu pieces are well into the 1000's.

And on that iPod gift - an iPod?? Come on! When will they start giving more gifts that have unique American meaning? How about a special something crafted by artisans from New Orleans and survivors of Katrina? Or some special something crafted from the stone of Mt Rushmore?

I love this couple but they've got to step it up on the gift giving...first DVD's now an iPod? Seemed better suited for Prince Charles' sons!

Nathan Goad   April 1st, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Larry, touching the Queen is a FOPA an Australian PM did once and here is what was said about that. "Australia's Prime Minister, John Howard, has denied making a protocol blunder by putting his arm around the Queen. It was in the capital's Parliament building that Mr Keating earned the nickname "Lizard of Oz" with his touch of the Royal back during the Queen's last tour to Australia. So Michelle Obama is I assume the "Lizard of Oz" as well?

i think the people should riot like that outside the whitehouse demanding hemp legalization...henry ford made a car entirly out of hemp...body and all...look on you tube its 10 times tougher than steel and lighter...he hits the car with the axe to not reveal scratch.

As early as the 1500s this had become an obvious weak point in Britains defensive and offensive ability. The obvious solution was to look to the west where the New World of the Americas had been discovered and was being settled by an increasing number of European peoples. All of the European powers with settlements in the New World were particularly interested in growing hemp and laws were made stipulating that the recipients of land grants in the new colonies must devote a portion of their land and labour to growing hemp. All trade depended on it and all naval military strategy was equally reliant on a steady and secure supply of hemp.

Sure .

You invest in new Industries that provide jobs – research – manufacturing – and spin off industries – and all this economic activity generates income flows to the Treasury.

America needs a new power grid – I studied this in the late 1970's & early 1980s – it'll save electricity and fuel costs from lost power during transfer – it 's huge.

Hybrid Vehicles are THE World Class for Transportation – we need Detroit poised to take advantage of Lithium Ion Battery Technology – which has held up Electric Hybrids all along.. we HAVE the car technology in Electrics – Not the Battery Power Storage – until now .

Leveraging Health Care Insurance Providers & Pharma to open bid contracts that provide Competition – lowers costs.

Stem Cell Research – which is poised to make Medicine as we know it Obsolete – so we Invest in these Research Technologies – generating jobs & profits & income to the Treasury.

Get the Idea ?

We sit on our Hands like the Republicans want – we get deeper in Recession from no activity – and come out the other side in a less than Optimum Condition to compete Globally.

Maximilian Bravo   April 1st, 2009 11:00 pm ET

@ Brian Tourville
That would all be fantastic, but you're living in dreamland. Wake up my friend. Government has never been the answer. You speak of income flowing to the Treasury? There's no need for that when the Treasure can arbitrarily dip into the pockets of coming generations. Power grid? Sure, that's a good idea, but let's get real on the timeline. We need to pump our own oil for now, while we develop these technologies. It's akin to having buried treasure in our own homes and borrowing money from one neighbor (China) to buy gold from other non-friendly neighbors (the middle east). Health Care and Pharma, good luck lowering costs and Stem Cell Research I'm sure you're referring to embrionic and it has been far less successful than "ADULT" stem cell reasearch, that's why the private sector has not invested in embrionic cell research. Are YOU? GETTING THE IDEA?? ...This is not about Democrats or Republicans. President Bush was fiscally irresponsible and Obama is following that lead. STOP THIS OUTLANDISH SPENDING!!!!!

Someone questioned about the protocol of do the Obama's bow or curtsy to the Queen of England or not. As Americans we do not curtsy or bow to any head of a Monarchy. Think about it. Ever hear of the war of 1776? American blood was shed to free us from being British subjects. Only British subjects curtsy or bow to the Queen of England. In addition, the President of the USA is far more powerful then the Queen of England and we don't bow/curtsy to our President. George Washington adamantly opposed any kind of monarchy in this country.

Cyrus   April 1st, 2009 11:21 pm ET

Can you shed some light on why President Obama's opinion and/or prediction on the March Madness outcome was met with ridicule by some Americans?
It seems to me that everyone has a right to express their opinion, especially in the free world and on something as exhilerating as US college basketball.
In my opinion, I feel that the coach firstly was out of order to say that the President should worry about the economy and not about the March Madness outcome when we all know that the economy is the President's top priority.
Larry, what is your take on this situation?

A bit of help needed by MIchelle Obama on the diplomatic front. All of those first ladies of the G20 in town at once, a lifetime opportunity of 'ladies to lunch' and help relations, impart wisdom, and well...the First Lady dines with Naomi Campbell, the convicted felon rebel supermodel who the British believe to be lower than Paris Hilton. What?????!!!!

As for my comment – Shades of JFK and Jackie! All we need is President Obama at the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie or What is now Kennedy Platz giving his "Ich Bin Ein Berliner" speech to the people of Berlin. To the British Lady who commented on who coaches the President and First Lady about etiquite; while we have the greatest respect for the British Monarch and the British People, we have our own etiquite. We dip the American Flag to no leader of a Foreign Nation and we do not bow or curtsy to any monarch. Having said that, I have always appreciated the close relationship of our two countries and have the greatest regard for the British People.

What was he thinking borrowing all that money, what was it used for? All of this economic down turn is not the fault of Mr Obama who is barely two months in office, I think he needs to be given a chance to do his job and we should not expect him to turn around in two days what we have give useless....sorry I mean President Bush eight years to do

I am all for our President to go and discuss world matters with his counterparts and hope that some good comes from it all, but the way you all are covering this trip seems to be ignore the fact that millions are being spent on the dinners, meetings, pomp and circumstances, etc. Those monies could help alot of the common folks, charities who are struggling due to the failures of their respective government's policies. I would think as our President has been chastising the CEO's of Banks and GM, and telling everyone that we are all in it together, that maybe he should exercise the same restraints that he is telling American's to do. Did the American taxpayers have to pay for Ms.Obama's side trips as well? How many American's are clipping coupons for dinner, while he is eating at 10 Downing? Seems like the there is a disconnect from Pennsylvania Ave. to Main Street. I believe Marie Antoinette said it, Let them eat cake. CNN you are quick to jump on the excesses of the Financial executives, what about the use of tax dollars for the Govt. excesses?

This from the "Telegraph" U.K. about the event immediately following the G20 meeting ...

"And if any leaders have some time to kill after Thursday, they could perhaps do worse than stick around. From Friday, ExCeL hosts Millionaire Mind Intensive UK Live, a seminar by T. Harv Eker, a “bestselling author and multi-millionaire” from Vancouver.

Eker promises that his audience will “walk out with a brand new blueprint, set to achieve massive wealth and all the success you've only dreamed of”. Perhaps the G20 could arrange for him to drop by a day early."

Hey ... who needs this more than the G20???

Everybody's wondering about Michelle Obama – First of all, she is amazingly tall, and everyone is fascinated with tall women! She is attractive, highly educated, had a career (before she began campaigning with her husband) of substance and prominence in Chicago. She is a happily married mother. She has so much going for her – of course people are intrigued by her!

Josh   April 2nd, 2009 12:58 am ET

I am curious as to why Jenny McCarthy is viewed as a reliable source of medical information. Her anti-vaccination conspiracy theory is not backed up by any credible evidence in any study. This should be even more apparent after the recent revelation that Dr. Andrew Wakefield, who first started this vaccine scare, was either a very bad scientist or an outright fraud.

There is nothing credible in what Ms. McCarthy is saying, but there is an actual body count attached to it. As the numbers of vaccinated kids drop, we will see (as has already happened in other countries with low vaccination rates) outbreaks of diseases like measles or polio. Kids will be hurt, or possibly killed, by parents who listen to McCarthy and her fellow anti-vaxxers.

I would also like to know why she continues to spout discredited nonsense (the whole "anti-freeze in vaccines" thing comes to mind), even after it has been shown to her that she is 100% incorrect. I would like to see her be asked some of the tough questions, like how is she right when the vast majority of trained physicians have tested and arrived at a consensus that is diametrically opposed to her position. Is she really smarter than nearly everyone who has graduated from medical school combined? Do her "mommy instincts" trump research, testing, and the scientific method?

Another thought, if it were the thimerisol (sp?) in vaccines that caused autism, why hasn't there been a significant decrease in the number of newly diagnosed? Why has the number actually increased when, based on her claims, it should sunk? Can she explain how an ethyl mercury is so harmful, even considering that the human body can process and clear ethyl mercury (methyl is nasty stuff).

Lastly, if shows such as Larry King continue credulously broadcasting this kind of nonsense, then you are just as culpable as she is when children die of preventable diseases. I know that you are ratings driven, so here's a better idea. Why don't you bring some doctors on and let them all debate the issue? McCarthy will be destroyed, but that's too be expected, as she doesn't have the evidence on her side. Present a factual piece of Investigative Journalism for once, please, especially on a topic such as this.

Jacqueline Hester   April 2nd, 2009 12:59 am ET

Darlene   April 2nd, 2009 12:59 am ET

Wow, it's refreshing to see the President and First Lady Obama reshaping how the world views the US. What a difference from how the Washington Post viewed the Obamas (last year) as secret terrorist (stereotypes promoting dying racism).

Maybe once the US critics get over the results of the election can we finally as a nation go forward and repair our economy! We are all Americans and need to back each other – United We Stand!

The political fighting needs to stop... at least for the sake of those who are suffering in the US and out of work! After all, it was the PEOPLE who placed President Obama in office... criticizing the President's every move is actually criticizing the decision of the American people who placed him there! If those across the pond can recognize the value of the Obamas, why can't we?

One of your callers tonight referred to the Obamas as from working class families. I believe the father of the President had a PhD and his mother either a PhD or an MA. In no way possible can that be considered working class. I wish someone would correct that impression.

In addition, with both Obamas having earned law degrees at top schools, that alone would "boost" them above any working class demarcation. (Her parents, I think, had " working class" jobs. )

You can land your elbows in the opponents ribs, or the working table, but on dining table.....NO, NO, NO. Both Prez. Obama and Japanese PM did it.

Beverly   April 2nd, 2009 1:22 am ET

I know the G-20 is a very serious matter but to be really silly for a moment... I just wish I could know what Mrs. Obama was thinking when she met Camilla Parker-Bowles. A majority of us admired Princess Diana so much and haven't forgotten that whole sordid affair. I wonder if thoughts of that crossed her mind as she was exchanging small talk and shaking her hand.

On a more serious note, I have complete confidence that our President will win friends and influence others during this trip. He knows how to relate to people in a language they can understand.

Shawn T   April 2nd, 2009 1:23 am ET

Its nice to have a President that is given some respect and doesn't make us look like shucks by having shoes thrown at him.

Tara , Canada   April 2nd, 2009 2:40 am ET

So many pressing and important issues to discuss and you spend an hour on what the Obama's wore , ate and other trivial things.
Is this really what Americans want and need to hear right now .

James   April 2nd, 2009 3:13 am ET

May I say that all this coverage of what people wore and the gifts they gave is really perverted. It shows how materialistic and shallow these news organizations really are. No wonder people are breaking windows and protesting!

Cealan   April 2nd, 2009 3:29 am ET

Your show is both informative and poignant. However, it is upsetting to watch as the focus of the program shifts from a brief discussion about the political unrest in London to a drawn out discussion of Michelle Obama's wardrobe. Diplomacy is important, and part of that includes making a good impression. However, this dissection of her appearance seems better suited for a Perez Hilton Post. Take better advantage of the multitude of resources you have at your disposal. Tell us something important about what is going on in the world!

What a breath of fresh air! I am so proud of President Obama and the First Lady. They display grace, intelligence, and humanity. It is a great feeling as am American, to have a world class leader!

Kamaile Nihipali   April 2nd, 2009 3:31 am ET

I feel very well represented by President Obama and his wife Michelle amoung world leaders in London. I am hawaiian from a small town of Laie that can appreciate the leadership and "example" that both of them are showing, but also realize that they too are human beings and understand that by keeping things real and entering this political arena with humble yet firm goals to "help" the world is very comforting to me.

My perspective of this so called G-20 event is visual history for me. And I truly understand that the bottom line is to be of help to all nations. But what I love the most of what I see in all the clips of this event of both President and his wife is that the President does place his wife as the nuturing partner of this journey that they take together in leading our nation. You can certainly feel it through the TV. And can only hope for the best. You can see that their ultimate goal together is "Service". This should be an ultimate goal for all of us wherever we live around the world.

Srirach fm Honolulu   April 2nd, 2009 3:42 am ET

I am so proud of our President not because of he was my former neighbor. I think he is going to get the country back on track and even better than ever. America will be the greatest country in the world. People should appreciate his hard work and allow him time.

I always watch your program, I have CNN on about 12 hrs/day.

CM   April 2nd, 2009 3:44 am ET

About Michelle's attire: "She want's to be among the people, not above."

Brilliant observation.

Stacey Kelley   April 2nd, 2009 3:48 am ET

STOP IT! Ms. Obama is no J O! Nor will America ever see her as such! I was born in the very early 1970's and i even understand the impact of the media putting her on that platform.......there will only be one Kennedy administration....If it is her wishes to try and fill those will be her alone that takes a ipod.???????....not J O
Besides what woman would want to portray a lady who held and watched her husband murdered! "people like pretty people" that may have got them elected....won't get anything done!!!!!!!!

Kent   April 2nd, 2009 3:56 am ET

FOOD? It's ENGLAND! 'nuff said

FRENZY? It seems to me that not everyone is happy with the way the President and First Lady met the Queen. I am among them. It looked to me like a breach of etiquitte and lack of respect!

GIFTS? An iPod and a photograph? THAT bodes well!

K. Etzel   April 2nd, 2009 4:03 am ET

The Obamas are social elitists. While many of us are taking a salary decrease to keep our jobs, we are not purchasing little known designer clothing. During the campaign, did not "Mrs. O." state that she purchased her clothing from that "little known french store, Target"? While we as Americans are struggling to keep our jobs, the last thing we want to hear about is Michelle Obama's clothing or the expensive beef that they are dining on.

What we need is responsible government that is not simply throwing our money away at their whim!!!!

kate   April 2nd, 2009 4:09 am ET

re: your endless comments on the obamas' style: style follows substance as form follows function.

Crazy_Tribal_Lady   April 2nd, 2009 4:11 am ET

I dont care if the president looks like a bum when he goes out but leave Mrs. Obama alone bad economy or not , let her wear whatever she wants.

Jack Luft   April 2nd, 2009 4:26 am ET

President Obama in Europe:

Beyond the politics and policy issues, the pride I feel in watching the President and Ms. Obama is rooted in their decency, authenticity, intelligence and inner strength which radiates the qualities that Americans see in themselves.

I was excited to see that Larry might have a blog, thinking "wow it's great to see the older generation embrace new stuff"

But when I got here, it's obviously written by someone who works for Larry.

That's not a blog. That's just more media, in a different format.

The key thing about a blog is the 1:1 exchange, regardless of length, editting or whatever.

So: this is not a Larry King blog. It's something, just not that.

Judith   April 2nd, 2009 6:15 am ET

This is the President we voted for. He's a 'think first' kind of guy instead of a 'do first and think later'.We are so proud of him and Michelle as our First Lady.

Aman   April 2nd, 2009 7:06 am ET

Does anyone have an estimate for the US delegates traveling costs to the G20 summit in London? Would the payback from AIG bonuses cover the trip?

I just find it a bit ironic that on one hand Obama preaches for a cut in various costs and a pay back of bonuses, while on the other hand he travel over to London with a big team, Air Force One, Marine One, Stagecoach and all other necessities needed for a trans Atlantic journey

Tina   April 2nd, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Jo Ann, Ohio...You sound SO narrow-minded and bitter! The rest of us are PROUD to call President Obama OUR President...You live here in America? HE IS YOUR PRESIDENT TOO! SHOULD be PROUD !!! President Obama is elegant, gracious, brilliant, ARTICULATE (i.e. he CAN put more than 2 words together in proper order without displaying stupid, arrogant smirk on his face) humble, but self-confident. THANK GOD the rest of us woke up...You still seem to be in la-la land! Poorrrrrrr thing....

debbie   April 2nd, 2009 1:26 pm ET

Lionel you must be a Republican because if you remember we were attacked on Bush's watch and until it happens on the President's watch there is no comparison . President Obama has the Bush legacy on his back and a cloud of doubt for now that follows him around the world after the last administration. After Bush and Chaney would you not question the next President's ideas. Bush and Chaney created these wars and bad economy so attacking President Obama is wrong . I know it is hard for some Americans to get passed that nonsense we were handed for 8 years and then a man with brains takes office it must seem out of this world for Bush followers. What charm and elegance the President and First Lady showed. Finally a President that makes Americans fell worthy again.

Peggy Rush   April 2nd, 2009 5:20 pm ET

Michelle Obama is a jewel. The Queen reconizes this fact also. We are so fortunate to have the Obama's represent America to the rest of the world. I am so proud to be an American.

marcy   April 2nd, 2009 11:48 pm ET

Yes, Mrs. Wilson, I'd say we are definitely in trouble. I don't understand why well intended acts of decency or kindness have come under scrutiny to criticize and blast because it may not be what someone else likes or would choose to do in the same situation. Trouble is, the nice people seem to be the minority today, so makes you wonder if we've reached that robotic state where feelings are passe'. No, we know better, because the bottom line is, that good will conquer bad in the end, so the newish, cynical, critical, and do-it-my-way attitude will be for nothing. The Monarchy may not suit everyone, but it hardly affects us directly, and it's such a small matter in this troubled world today. Being a lady doesn't seem to be popular today because I don't see any in the limelight in most countries, but, I have never seen any footage of Queen Elizabeth being any thing else. I don't think we'll see anyone that can match her and the Queen Mother for dignity, integrity or class, which makes it all of our loss.
