I've always enjoyed watching Bill Maher – back in the day when he hosted his own show on HBO. I'm curious to know exactly how the Stimulus Bill will help folks (like me) hold onto our homes especially when folks are losing their jobs. Why was Michael Phelps so careless to engage in smoking – did he think he was invincible?
A-Rod should have never signed a contract if he could not deliver w/out taking "enhancement" drugs. Not sure what the "Octuplets" lady wants to achieve having 14 kids – perhaps start her own "little league"....?

Only in America!!!!!

Peggy   February 12th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

Why would those that voted against the stimulus package "lower" themselves to accept monies for their state? It should be, vote no and your state or district you represent gets no bailout funds. It's a no brainer. This way, if the stimulas package does not work (as your no vote indicates), you won't lose a thing and can hold your heads high that you were oh so right in your no vote.

Rich Worthen   February 12th, 2009 4:42 pm ET

Mr King, I have really enjoyed your show for so many years. Thanks for being my evening entertainment and news show. Your the best.

years ago,the few times I watched Bill Maher show he had an answer for everything let's see what the answer is for the mother of the recent 8 babies.

Wendi Allen   February 12th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

My mother loves Bill Mahar. She is a white woman who marched with Martin Luther king in Selma on 3/21/1965. She was 35 yrs old.We have a picture of her standing behind him. hang ing in her living room. She has recently shown this picture to many African Americans who are shocked to know that white people walked for their cause too. If their are any other mothers who left children and a husband to march with Martin Luther King, it would be great to get them together. My mother believes her time is over and that no one really cares. She is now 79yrs old. I don't believe that. She is my hero and best friend and I know their has to be a story somewhere. She would also love to talk to Bill. Her name is Gwen Gain. She will be watching tonight. Does Bill believe Athieists can be good people without anyone(GOD) telling them to? My mother is an Athieist and afraid to tell people because, she has lost many friends. She is one of the kindest people I know. Please, I can't get anyone interested in her story. She has also written a book about her exprerience. (unpublished) Thanks in advance, Wendi Gain Allen She does not know I have written to you!! What a surprise.

Do you think it's time to legalize marijuana outright in this country, of course having the same restrictions on it that alcohol has? And what would you say to the people that are against it, since they are the type of people that would rather the government think for them, than have to come up with their own conclusions?

Four points I'd like to make,
1. Tax dollars
2. Business opportunity's
3. Less power for street ganges
4. Money saved from incarcerating and imprisonment of people

Terry, TX   February 12th, 2009 6:26 pm ET

How does Bill think about Pelosi sneaking back the illegal alien social programs of the Pork Bill.... what about bailing out California, Illinois, New York, Michigan and Florida....this is free money they fon't have to get back?
How about charging Barney Franks, Chris Dodd, Rep Waters, Rep Meeks, Rep Clay and Rep Davis for being responsible for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.?
Google: 2004 Congressional Hearing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac ...this is from C-Span.

Sebastian Eslava   February 12th, 2009 6:29 pm ET

I am a current high school student heading to college next year. What does this economic crisis and the proposed stimulus plan mean when it comes down to paying for college next year?

Michael Sandler   February 12th, 2009 6:35 pm ET

Hello Bill

A Fan for years (kiss a**), but true. I have an issue with Michael Phelps. If he smoked weed, and weed is not what I call performance enhancing, then so what? In fact I would say he overcame such adversity if he smoked during the Olympics. Maybe that wasnt a finger that won by .001 of a second, it was a joint.

So he is not squeaky clean, At least he doesn't use HGH and other roids like A-roid that cause shrinkage. He needs his private parts like a shark needs his dorsal fin.

Bill some thoughts

Ruby Coria LA., CA.   February 12th, 2009 7:11 pm ET

Bill, other points on marijuana: no one gets crazy like they do when they drink alcohol and thats legal, it helps you sleep & you won't sleep walk like on Ambin,. all I know is that the Bud Man makes a lot of money. On that octopus, I think that all the "pro-life republicans" should pick up the bill for the amount it will cost to raise 14 kids.

Allison   February 12th, 2009 7:32 pm ET

I hope Bill continues to be tough - even on our new president. I don't agree with everything he says, but completely agree with his right to say it.

Titled “Stimulus”

By Dethaniel S. Henry

“One Day, a day will come that we as a world will need to stand together for the survival of the human race, but before we can champion that day we must stand together as a world to practice, hence Science, the next life sustaining planet, the vehicle to get all of us there. What will be our Noah’s Ark?”

Today on The Glen Beck Show (Foxnews)

Michelle Malkin syndicated columnist call us a nation of muchers and followed that up with "Loafs and Fishes multiply , Pork and Koolaid falls from the sky.

I understand that Michael Phelps is dealing with his own personal religion (being 23), that is exactly the point, decisions with himself not the worlds. He must deal with it. It happened now lets move on. What would happen if we drug tested all employees Friday at 9a.m. media networks, newspaper, government, the public. What would happen ? Would we even dare to do so or would the results be worst than Mr. Phelps mistakes

Just food for thought.

lovya show,

Dethaniel S. Henry

joanne osinkowski ontario canada   February 12th, 2009 7:45 pm ET

Bill we love you in Canada:) Do you think the octoplets should be up for adoption to couples who can really give the kids a stable and financially sound life????

Doug   February 12th, 2009 7:48 pm ET

Larry! Bill! Can someone - ANY ONE - tell me WHO will be accountable for the billions paid in this stimulus bill? Politicians? CEOs? Contractors? Local bureacrats? Am i REALLY the only one who doesn't trust ANY of them to do what's right?

Dethaniel northeast nc   February 12th, 2009 8:09 pm ET

Larry, Bill, Will Ferrell does the best impersonation of bush on broadway wish he could have trade places with the real bush

Jacqueline Butler-Wilson   February 12th, 2009 8:50 pm ET

I would like to comment on the Octuplets and their unplanned survival for this life. . . I personally feel the doctor who administered the inplantation of the mother's eggs should be responsible for the livelihood of those children. It seems that their mother is not mentally stable in view of the fact that she requested more children (even if were for only one more) when she is already ready responsible for six children (three of which are developmentally delayed). How could a responsible M.D. allow his patient to under go this impossible life task?

Jacqueline Butler-Wilson   February 12th, 2009 8:52 pm ET

Bill what did you think of Aretha Franklin's hat at the inaugural ceremony? I think Queen Elizabeth would have loved it.

Jacqueline Butler-Wilson   February 12th, 2009 8:57 pm ET

Bill I know this is not one of the subjects up for comment. I just want to say , I think you are one of the sexiest white boys on the planet.

Michael Bowman   February 12th, 2009 9:05 pm ET

Bill and Larry,

As supporters of the arts, how do you feel about the recent cuts in funding to education in the Stimulus Package effecting music and art programs in public schools?

Michael Bowman
Deltona, Florida

Devin   February 12th, 2009 9:07 pm ET

Bill I'm hopelessly in love with you. honestly.

mitch   February 12th, 2009 9:09 pm ET

I understand what is going on in our economy and the hardships we face.what about our men and women fighting our country's war and what is it doing to their families.

Bob   February 12th, 2009 9:10 pm ET

It's amazing to me that when you, as President want diversity of thought in your cabinet, that someone would resign based on the fact that they "think different than you do." Isn't that diversity? If giving money to the wealthy in the interest of supporting the poor is the answer, truly, then the Wall Street CEO's and Banking CEO's will be no doubt, parsing out their multi million dollar bonuses to contribute to the economy. As long as it's an $85,000 rug and a commode with legs. If this stimulus works, the vagaries of tax cuts is dead forever and with it, the Republican message. That's the problem, the Republican party is in it's death rattle, a story too long antiquated and too long over blown. Let me know when the Middle Class March on Washington is, I'd love to be there. I want someone to explain to me how you get any reward for driving an entire component of the financial economy into the ground like a lawn dart.

Trey - Raleigh, NC   February 12th, 2009 9:10 pm ET

Bill – What is your opinion of Ann Coulter? Rumors have it you two are friends. Is that true or is she a complete nutjob?

Brian Scully   February 12th, 2009 9:11 pm ET

Larry, It is amazing to me that Bill blames Bush for the economic problems, BUT says for Obama to fix it the American people have to work with him.

1993 is when the mess began. The American people's greed is what got us here. Clinton and Gore encouraged it. Bush is only guilty of not stopping it.

The STIMULUS plan does not create 1 immediate long-term job. This is a spending bill, not a stimulus.

Jill Ranaer   February 12th, 2009 9:11 pm ET

Regarding the mother of the octuplets...

While I am shocked about the complexity of the situation and wish for the continued health and development of these precious children and their siblings, one thing has truly struck a nerve with me. How dare all the right-wing, pro-life groupies criticize this mother? We are subjected to their countless marches and displays of unborn fetuses, so why are they suddlenly taking issue with eight new precious lives? I guess the best way to silence a pro-life supporter is to hit them with how eight new lives are eating away their tax dollars.

Mike Rose   February 12th, 2009 9:11 pm ET

I agree with Bill, it is Congress that needs the cleaning. That is where the pork comes from, that is where the delays come from. If they had a Website where each Bill was clear and simple, one subject, where registered voters could vote, then the Congress would be under fire for not voting the way their constituency wanted them to. Then come election time they will be out, make them accountable with transparency! Shame on Congress and the good ol boys.

Marcel Gauvreau   February 12th, 2009 9:11 pm ET

I have been listening to Larry King Live since 1985 but you are driving me crazy with your ads of Larry King Live, clicking continuously, on the lower right side of the screen.
You will make me stop listening to the program.

Carlos   February 12th, 2009 9:12 pm ET

With billions of tax dollars being spent on this stimulus package, do you think just giving every tax payer 10 or $20,000 dollars would stimulate the economy? Just imagine people would buy new cars, pay their mortgage and just spend in general. I bet would be cheaper than the one trillion dollar bill.

Sheryl   February 12th, 2009 9:12 pm ET

The Stimulous this time...the politicians can't stimulate even a vote..why? because us little people on Main Street are the only ones who can stimulate the economy.
Give US, the money. There are roughly 300 million taxpayers...thus, $300 million dollars. One million per family, $500,000 single.
We can pay off our mortgage and keep families in their home in not on the street, money back to the turn THEY can pay off their loans to Us via the TARP program..$300 million out of 835 Billion,,,hmmm let's see...the money Main street gets would be enough to pay off bills, in turn to buy a new car, which starts the auto industry back up, enough to pay medical bills, so that the medical services could come back. There would be lots left over to really stimulate the infrastructure...but until those on the hill and white house see that the tax cuts, for next year, and the other so called stimulus items are coming waaaayyy too late, there will be no changes. WE are the ones suffering. We don't need a tax cut when there is nothing to own to have taxes levied.
The Banks...i have a loan with Country Wide, which will go up next year..i am trying to get a fixed rate with them...but until I am late by 4-5 months...they will not talk to me...and they have said this..could it be that if I am late...they could use the TARP money to pay off the soon to be late note...and not use their own for thought...
Thank you Bill for letting me vent...See if you couldn't get a few more bucks for us out here...

Richard & Amanda Vincelli   February 12th, 2009 9:13 pm ET

Bill Maher For President! Can't wait to see you at Gibson next month! Thanks for coming to LA!

Re: The World Economic Forum- The Obama Administration sent no Cabinet officers and no Congressional leaders. This left the floor to former President Clinton.

Les   February 12th, 2009 9:14 pm ET

So, what's a pundit if they've never been involved? It's easy to sit on the sidelines and 'comment.' Maher and Franken are TV comedians and yet they are regarded as sages in our great society. How low have we gone...

Mark   February 12th, 2009 9:14 pm ET

Yesterday, President Obama suggested, if HR 1 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus) is passed, "said that if Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off."Caterpillar would "rehire" laid off employees. But after the president left the event, Caterpillar CEO Jim Owens said the exact opposite.

Asked if the stimulus package would be able to stop the 22,000 layoffs or not, Owens said, "I think realistically no. The truth is we're going to have more layoffs before we start hiring again"

"It is going to take some time before that stimulus bill" means re-hiring, he said.

The President has to stop campaigning and runining the country.

angela   February 12th, 2009 9:14 pm ET

I can't think of anything I would rather see LESS, than Ann and Bill "having fun" fighting.Somebody sold out

Hesham   February 12th, 2009 9:14 pm ET

It's a comment: i watched religulous last night and i just want to tell Bill that i was disappointed about the was basically just making fun of waht people believe, and making most of the poeple in the movie, look idiots by editing scenes, and putting subtitles that do not reflect what they actually say,or simply making fun of what they say. you made everyone look like a fool in the movie.I'm glad you're not any where in the oscars list.

Sandy   February 12th, 2009 9:15 pm ET

Bill, why do you always blame EVERYTHING on the Republicans? Some of your comments are not factually based. (By the way, I'm not a Republican.)

Yet, I must say you are entertaining!

Peter Bryant   February 12th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

Larry there are 150 million tax payers who are our work force. Instaed of throwing Billions at 4 million jobs why not send each tax payer a check for $200,000 ? wouldn't that kick atrt our economy. P{eo-ple would pay down credit and avoid Foreclosure. The unemployed would be saved and it would start a spending spree that would end this crisis. Plus the banks would end up with the money anyway..

Keep up the great work Both L:arry and Bill

Priti   February 12th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

So grateful to see Bill Maher on the show today, been waiting for it a long time. He's right on it - Republicans following Rush Limbaugh!!!! A pleasure to hear him as always.

Thanks once again for the opportunity to hear him.

Todd M   February 12th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

Bill – Love your show and viewpoint. I am concerned however that even when Darwin talked about evolution, the scientists of the day didn't get it right away. The economists of today still don't fully understand the problem and I am concerned that the over involvement of government, no matter how well intentioned doesn't get to the root cause. For two trillion dollars you could have bought a lot of houses if that was the real problem!

Elle Verona   February 12th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

Who hasn't hit the bong? The way our Country reacts to "bad" things is embarrassing.

Michael Phelps is a successful, motivated man. Marijuana obviously should be legalized. So, it can be my choice if i want to hit the bong and not the Goverment.

leila   February 12th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

Thank you so much Larry for bringing Bill Maher once again to your program. We love him. He makes us laugh and aware of the things that are hidden in politics. Hope to see him more often.

Trey - Raleigh, NC   February 12th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

Bill – did you catch Joaquin Phoenix' interview on David Letterman? Is that an act or is he crazy?

Ivan   February 12th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

It's unfortunate, but the mother of the octuplets needs mental help. and the sad part, i believe she brought to much attention to herself, and Social Services will be stepping in. I give her a good 4-6 months before they come knocking.

Steven US ARMY WAR VETERAN   February 12th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

I am currently diagnosed with anxiety and ocd by the military. The Military has been told to cut down on the diagnosing of PTSD to soldiers returning home from Iraq due to the cost of treatment. Due to the fact the VA is shunning soldiers and the medicine they try to convince you works...DOESN'T!!! Therefore I smoke marijuana and it helps with my anxiety, stress levels, sleeping disorders I've aquired; it just helps me feel leveled.
Do you think it’s time to legalize marijuana in this country, with perhaps having the same restrictions that alcohol has? Most of the people that are even against marijuana are ignorant about it and are the kind of people that cannot think for themselves but rather wait on the government to decide for them. It sure would cut down on the tax dollars spent on keeping MANY people behind bars just for weed. And it would cut the GANG dealers out of the game.
please respond

Bill, you're a bright guy. Which philosopher had the greatest impact on your thinking?

shannon Shostack   February 12th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

Hey Bill and Larry,

You are much loved in Austin Texas. Here's a question, what would you do, if you were Obama, to stiumulate the economy?? This was my Toast masters question the other day and I answered put heavy R&D into sofer toilet paper....

michelle   February 12th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

I love you Bill!!!!

Steve Hall   February 12th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

Never had heard Maher that much. Now I realize why! After the first two minutes of conversation I realized I would not walk across the street to hear him. Just another liberal Republican basher. Wants to blame everything on GW. Economy was fine until we got a Democrat controlled congress. And do you think that he might admit that Clintons plan for everyone to own a house and to send all our jobs overseas might just be catching up to us?

jeff mclaughlin   February 12th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

President Obama is coming to Canada as his first foreign visit. What do you think he will say, or should say?

wendy   February 12th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

I love Bill but would like him to know that Indiana did go "blue" in this year's presidental election!! Proud to say!!

Tammy   February 12th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

Just wanted to say I am a huge fan of you both! I can't wait until Bill Maher's Real Time comes back!!! I listen to the podcasts at work and really miss you!

Yip Harburg wrote brother can you spare a dime. He also wrote the lyrics to the songs of the Wizard of Oz.

Chris Maddox   February 12th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

Why do you think that the Obama administration has resisted so many calls for accountability for the former administration by bringing criminal charges for torture, war crimes etc ( I could write all night)

Jan   February 12th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

Please........who cares what Bill Maher thinks or believes in??? I opened my eyes years ago and left the Democratic party to join the Republicans and not once have been influenced by the likes of Rush L. It is time for the Democrats to put aside the snide and vicious remarks they have spat about since Clinton left office and get a life.

what kind of drugs do you think Joaquin Phoenix was on last night?

Mark Waterbury   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

I swear the republicans are bi-polar, reflective personalities, they messed things up for 8 years and then when they don't get to have their way and keep messing things up the say the Democrats are the ones being partisan. Do they need better meds?

angela   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

So would he tell Angelina she's not normal too. Because I have never thought she was normal, but she gets huge accolades for her brood.

Lindy   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Bill: Solve the economic crisis by decriminalizing cannabis and all drugs. Regulate, sell through liquor outlets or pharmacies, tax it, and free all the hundreds of thousands in our prisons right now. It is a free choice issue. For "harder" drugs, regulate through doctors. Addiction is a medical problem, not a social one.

Heather   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

How do you answer the Republican charge that President Obama is leading us into Socialism? I love your haircut!
Thank you for your time.

Melissa   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Can't wait for the new season of Real Time, Bill. HBO isn't the same without you.

Francisco Ochoa   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

How can we fix Wellfare and uninployment?
I believe that some people need it. But I also believe that there is a lot of people take advantage of it. I think that if you draw any of this services, the goverment should make you take a drug test. I think the goverment should develop something to keep cheap labor in the united estate instead of send it to other countries. and put a lot of the uninployment people back to work.

Joe   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Hey Bill,

What do you think about scrapping the electoral college system and
making presidential elections be based purely on popular votes?

Billy Maher   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Hey Bill,

Marijuana is ILLEGAL. Do you have any idea whatsoever what the word ILLEGAL means? Apparently you don't. Thank God you are childless; I wouldn't wish your parenthood on ANY child at all.

Albert   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Hi Folks... I have been watching CNN like a PA at a Sports Illustrated Bathing suit shoot for months now... I keep asking myself... Where are, and why isn't... every economic expert on the planet recruited to help find solutions to this global economic crisis? Clearly there have to be more intelligent people out there, besides the current so called experts in Washington... that actually can solve problems without fear of alienating others from any particular party, so why are we not engaging these brilliant minds?

george   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

I was wondering if bill agrees that the doctor who delivered the 8 babies and put the more babies in ther lady deserves to go to jail.

antonio   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

1. when the previous bail out plan targeted business, republican senators had no problem rushing it through the spending; When the present bail out plan targeting our nations people, infrastructure etc., republican senators suddenly had a problem with spending.

2. Do Republicans senators have their priorities mixed, are the out of touch?

Trisha Springstead RN   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Dear Larry,
I love Bill Maher, we have kids in jails for pot, why do we not tax it and stop putting people in jail. The South is horrible when it come to criminalizing POT. Too many kids are in jail for a joing.
This is BS

Philip   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Mr. Maher love the show. Just curious to get your thoughts on how people are trying to compare Obama to the religious theory that the world is coming to an end?

C Bedek   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

What should we do about the current monetary system? Its corrupt.

Paul Mancini   February 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

I figure I already know what your opinion will be but I can't pass up an opportunity to hear you talk about religion. What do you think of the recent crisis in the Catholic Church concerning the reinstatement of Bishop Richard Williamson?

Paul in NY

Wendy   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

Bill, Can't wait to see Religuous...but do you have the nerve to ask Ann Coulter about those transgendered rumors?

perry   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

TOPIC: Stimulus

Bill, you stated before that all economists agree that we need to spend more. Well that is exactly the problem, you are reading the people who were wrong about EVERYTHING. The Austrian school of economics which predicted this mess says that spending will kill the economy by destroying the dollar. Why not listen to the people who have been right?

Wilbur   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

What is Maher's thoughts on the legalization of marijauna?

Charlie Stenger   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

I set my phone reminder to make sure I saw Bill on your show! I can't wait to hear his thoughts on the crooks from Wall Street and the Senate trials from yesterday.

Dwayne   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

My question is for bill, do you ever think the republicans will stop playing
politics, and really come up with solutions for the many problems america is facing economy wars...........

Eddie J   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

Hi Larry and Bill,
Bill, would you please tape your debates with Ann Coulter for those of us who won't be able to attend? I'm sure there would be others who feel the same!

Jill   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

I think Kellogg's is totally confused. What better way to increase their munchies to munchers. If anything, it could haven enhanced their immage. Do they really think cereal is for kids?

Vicki   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

For Bill Maher: who would you pick to fix the economy and why?

Can you comment on having a "real" Christian in the White House who actually cares about people less fortunate than he as Jesus did?

Flipping to CNN...Bill Maher!!! Excellent choice Larry! This is better than the Daily Show and Colbert combined! I don't always agree with Mr. Maher, but I'm always entertained. Funny and smart. Thanks!

Iverson   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

Do you still think 9-11 was an
outside job?

Mark Portland, OR   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

I'd like to know just 'what' freedoms you think we really have? And I'm not talking about freedom in the abstract as most pundits would have us believe?

What freedoms do we REALLY have that MOST other countries do not? I contend, U.S. Freedom is the illusion of the ignorant!

Michael   February 12th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

I would like for you to make another movie about the food produced here in America. I have become paranoid about the food I eat after my mother passed away from liver cancer. I would like to share some ideas with you. How can i contact you?
P.S. Not only human food, have you seen the ingredients for Science Diet cat food? It's a shame!!

Trish   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

Alcohol damages the unborn baby more than any "illegal" drug – and it's legal. Yes, legalize Marijuana! I'm a middle aged white woman – would not be using it, but let's stop wasting our resources on fighting it, legalize it, and tax it like alcohol!

kevin   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

Obama should just legalize marijuana

John   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

Speaking of "Fruit Loops".... Isn't that the same as smoking a bong?

Matthew Freeman   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

My english profesor at Norfolk State mentioned the idea of National ID cards, what do you think of that and outta curiosity what do you think of the Chris Brown incident . I think it's terrible.

Georgia   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

I am so disgusted with the press reaction to Michael Phelps. All these Wall Streeters ruining thousands of lives and they are ragging on this young man who is a superb athlete for doing something to his own body.

Joe   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

I would like to ask Bill , if he feels that the Republican Party will try to

push aside Sarah Palin for another young Republican for the future.   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

What did you think about the tounge lashing given to the CEO and the SEC??

Sara   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

larry bill's way of thinking is the right way!! <3 LOVE it guys! just had to rush to my computer to blog!

Leo Hansen   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

Hi Bill Maher,

I'm a Canadian listening and watching you tonight. You remind me in many of your sly comments of one of our top comics in Canada – Rick Mercer. Have you heard any of his "rants" or his "Talking to Americans" series?

We loved Religulous. Thanks for your dry humour.

Monica Lillich   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

Hey Bill you are amazing! I love your thoughts on EVERYTHING!

I also loved your movie as a cradle Catholic....I have grown outside that theory...."Religuous" ??? May have the title wrong but I laughed thru the whole movie.

I live in Denver and it was all over the state....yeah!!! Mile High City.

Keep it going!

Steve   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

Bill is misrepresenting good republicans. Rush Limbaugh is not the leader of the Republicans. He is a NEOCON.

The Real leader of the republican movement is the man who the mainstream media ignores over and over agian. The man who came in 2nd to McCain.

Does Bill support RON PAUL and his Campaign for Liberty?

Ckelly   February 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

I am not a Bill Maher fan! Don't enoy him on the show...but oddly, I agree with his comparing the "enhanced fertilization" aka Pieser with cloning! a good ethical discussion...yeah, and I agree with his position on Michael Phelps and being caught with the "bong" what? shouldn't be a crime or anyone's business at least.Isn't the global economy falling apart?

Chris   February 12th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

BIll, what is your take on the push to have the Bush Admin. tried for either war crimes for enhanced interrogation or the politicization of the DoJ?

craig buchanan   February 12th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

as a de-facto atheist (which i suspect you are as well–i've seen your movie), i find a disturbing parallel between my discussions w/ others on the topic of religion and what i sense happens on the 700 club. how does one walk the narrow line between confidence and dogmatism?

Mark   February 12th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

dont you think its time we legalized marajuana so we could tax and ma ke millions in tax reveue

Roslyn   February 12th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

Why does not anyone mention that this woman of octuplets has obvioulsy had facial "surgery" that makes her look like Angelina Jolie? I have seen earlier pictures of her and she did not have the puffy lips .. etc...

I think she is obviously misdirected. I do not blame her mother for abandoning her.

Lisa Heuer   February 12th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

Please stop with the changing graphics at the bottom of the screen during the Larry King show. I can't watch it anymore with all this stuff going on. We do not like it. It gives us headaches. We don't need to see Larry's head popping up ever 2 seconds and text written about what was just said. Please stop this or we will not watch anymore!

Mitra   February 12th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

Your new box in the bottom right side of the screen is very annoying and distractive. Please do something about it.

For that matter, it might stop the killing of innocent people by the South American Cartels if the U.S. would follow the lead in Amsterdam, maybe more people wouldn't die because of the "War on
Drugs" We lost that war a long time ago.

Waleed Hammad (Wally if easier)   February 12th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

If you were the president of the united states (you would have to wait for 8 years though), how would you resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict that's been going on for 60+ years? Do you thing there will ever be a just solutions for both parties, considering the influence that the Isaelies have over the US government? I know.. the million dollar question!!!
Thank you,

carol wanstall   February 12th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

I want to know how many people you think are stimulated over or over stimulated by the $13. per week tax relief. I don't think the DC clan gets "it". We need them to get real and come see how bad things really are in the "states". Get out of the "district" for a reality check.

stefan   February 12th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

Bill: In a country where a man can be prosecuted aqnd jailed for writing a bad check or smoking marijuana, why is it that two ciminals like George W. Bush and Dick Cheney can get away unpunished for all the crimes they committed against the Americans and the humanity? I believe Those two and their cronies should be brought to justice, what do you think?

Les   February 12th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

Larry just announced that Bill would be doing 'Stand Up' in California. Why are we being continually preached to by comedians that charge a hundred bucks or more for a seat? Who empowererd them with the knowledge that they are the sounding board for all of us? I would guess that either L.A. is running out of material or that they think the majority of us are significantly less intelligent than they are.

Layne Myatt   February 12th, 2009 9:23 pm ET

Bill is a typical televison personality. He has forgotten that the real solution to all of our problems is to care about each other and to try to take care of everyone. Even those who disagree with him. We should even care about those people that we dislike. He is the poster boy for how our nation has decayed morally and has no character. Somehow he has the mistaken impression that he he is enlightened when, in fact, he is just as closed minded as those persons he ridicules. Since when has creating divisiveness and hating someone helped a society?

paul von tellrop   February 12th, 2009 9:23 pm ET

would you think though captured on video with a bong, maybe it was not pot being smoked ............but a medley of frosted flakes and rice crispies

Cindy Hiter   February 12th, 2009 9:23 pm ET

Why isn't anyone mad as heck at Bush?
Why does he get off?
Why do Americans allow this without consequences?

Any person wanting to have more than 2 children must prove ability to support and educate the child. Fertility clinics must have more than code of conduct. laws must be in place to handle the new scientific capability.

Carol Reinhard   February 12th, 2009 9:23 pm ET

Love ya Bill (most of the time), but must tell you that aligning yourself with Ann Coulter will probably result in an empty theatre. Would not be PAID to listen to her hateful drivel.

Sniffit   February 12th, 2009 9:23 pm ET

The scandal with Michael Phelps is not that he was smoking weed or that he should've admitted it, the scandal is that he's an Olympic champion and the threat an over-achieving paragon of athleticism represents to the baseless rhetoric spewed by opponents fo legalizing marijuana and the political capital with conservatives they wield and wish to maintain via the "war on drugs."

Benton Williams   February 12th, 2009 9:23 pm ET

The republicans are responsible for the highly successful "No Child Left Behind Policy" and are always known for being the pro-life party. Why were they against the education portions of the stimulus bill? It's like they are afraid of creating a future Barack Obama.   February 12th, 2009 9:23 pm ET

And finally Bill, what is your take on the Haggard Sex Scandal Reloaded?

Bill –

I love ya! You are so on the mark with everything you believe and say. My friends definitely don't agree with me on many of today's hot topics – but you are my "soul-mate" on so many issues, if not all and share my views completely. Keep it up and thanks so much for being so candid when others shy away!

Doug E.   February 12th, 2009 9:24 pm ET

Hi Larry and Bill,
My two favorite broadcasters on TV.
I'm a RN at Kaiser and I love the fact that this woman had 8 children.
First of all she did more for Pro life than any one ever could do.
She single handedly let pro life people realize that being pro life must include families that are single moms and if they want to have 8 babies by in vitro she should be able to do that too and go on welfare too.
Multiply that by 10,000 single family moms on welfare and I will like to see where the Pro life people and the GOP stand on that issue then.

Karen Evans   February 12th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

How is it you are able to stay civil with someone like Ann Coulter who is so overtly derisive, vicious and the closest thing to evil that we know as an author, spokeswoman for the Republican Party, and human being? I find her hateful, and am frankly dumbfounded you stated you have a 'friendship' with her?
You can civilly disagree but Ms. Coulter takes it to such a spiteful place I find it difficult to understand. HELP ME!! ke

Joe Harris   February 12th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

Bill I really like your jokes but, I really don't believe you or I was created by chance...there has to be some intelligence working here, don't you?

Charlie Richards   February 12th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

What do you think about Ted Kennedy's continued role as a senator? He has a brain tumor and seizures, not being funny, shouldn't he step aside and let someone serve our country who isn't impaired?

deb   February 12th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

Lets get this straight George Bush was not a typical republican. Tax cuts does work. This bill is just a pay off to Obama's friends. Both Dems and Repulicans have gotten it wrong over and over again. There is an answer just not theirs. Both parties never stay on message. We will never get this thing straight. The experiment is over time to go home!

Jon B   February 12th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

As one of the most level headed people in the public eye, Bill understands, there should be no left or righ, right and wrong.

I don't really care about A-Rod and steroids or Chris Brown and Rihanna, That goes on unheralded nationwide everyday.

I am curious to hear his take on "non-believers" comment made by Obama. Why does it terrify so many folks to admit that Atheists exist, and even moreso that a large majority of Americans are truly just Deists?

Chris James   February 12th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

Bill, What is your silver bullet for health care?

susan   February 12th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

There is a difference between type 1 and 2 diabetes. Type 1 is not caused by sugary cereals. The children with diabetes caused by poor eating habits, obesity, and lack of exercise have type 2 diabetes.

Faith   February 12th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

Love Bill Mahr!!! He's on the real tip!! What's his take the the politics of the Stimulus Bill.... does the republicians have a point of not supporting the bill or are they campaigning already?

Doug Dickerson   February 12th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

BTW, Brother Can You Spare a Dime was written by Yip Harburg and Jay Gorney.

What are your thoughts regarding prosecuting former Bush administration officials for misconduct, for instance regarding wiretaps or "enhanced" interrogation techniques? (Orwell would be proud of that phrase).

Hi Bill,

How come when approximately 98% of Blacks that voted actually voted for Barack Obama are not considered racist when approximately 50% of the whites that did not vote for the new president are perceived as racist or whatever other term that has been bandied about.

I suppose the 35% tax cuts that were offered in this new stimulus bill are ridiculed by you and many others because of your agenda or should I say beliefs. But, when 30% of the "Little Pork" projects, as New York Senator Schumer stated, there is no outrage, especially since Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi cleaned up. Many of those projects help the liberal rich and not the liberal poor. Keep pandering to the ignorant. Why don't you speak loudly against the tax cuts and champion raising taxes on the rich. Oh, I forgot, you wouldn't want to raise your own taxes.....or would you?

Lionel Anderson   February 12th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

I'm sure there are alot of republicans that agree with President Obama behind closed doors, Will there ever be a maverick republican that'll support him in public other than the few that already supprted him? and all the good football players on my college team smoked weed...

Bill Snapp, Blackfoot Idaho   February 12th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Bill, you don;t seriously think that Michael Phelps was spoking pot while in training and swimming at the Olympics?

david   February 12th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Maybe I just noticed this this past election cycle, but my other favorite politically incorrect comedian, Dennis Miller, has gone as far right as you are left, Bill! Now I've always known that you derived your biting wit from a leftist stance, but what the heck hapeened to Miller!? Did I just miss some clues from his early stand-up & SNL days? Would you ever consider doing a politically incorrect face-off with Miller... like you're planning with Ann Coulter?

Tim   February 12th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Bill did you know that we Atheists are thought of as less than blacks and homosexuals by average americans. We are opressed even more than those groups, isn't that ironic. Americans would vote first for a black person or homosexual for president before voting for an Atheist.

Sniffit   February 12th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Bill, I know you'd rather not give them advice, but you recognize the benefit to our society of having different opinions and positions vigorously defended in a responsible, if you were wearing the Republicans' political clown shoes right now, what would be your first ideological step?

Maria   February 12th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Bill, looking forward to Real Time being back. But doing a gig with Ann Coulter? Does she care about or have empathy for anyone? This is one woman who really lives in her own nasty self-absorbed head. You can do better than that.

Larry, what is happening now is more of spiritual deficiency than physical problem. Except America turns to God, no human being can fix this economy. The bible says that If my people who are called by name shall humble themselves and pray and turn away from their wickedness, I will hear from heaven and heal their land. So America should turn back to God.

Is it fair to grade President Obama every day and every moment? Did the journalist/media did the same with president Bush, when he raged the unnecessary war and did nothing for days for victims of Katrina?

Jan Rozich   February 12th, 2009 9:28 pm ET

Comment re Kellogg's by Bill Mahr–insinuation is that children get diabetes from eating Fruit Loops. Bill needs education on this subject. My daughter and grandson both were diagnosed with diabetes at age 6–neither of them got it from eating Fruit Loops or a high sugar product. One does not get Type I diabetes from eating sugar–the pancreas stops producing insulin. To all those young children with diabetes, Bill owes an apology!

Marlene Murat   February 12th, 2009 9:28 pm ET

Hi Mr. Maher I am proud of you,as an actor you show on your comment with
Larry King compassion for people that's suffering that the President
wants the stimulus for the country.People or Congress people they
seem to agree on spending money for war and others more than investing in the tax payers. In then past no president wants to invest in any things in the country. They focused most of them to outsiders.
By the way I would love to play in a movie. I am a beautiful black woman, you would be proud ofme.
Buy God bless you.

dave in FL   February 12th, 2009 9:28 pm ET

Larry, still can't figure out how you repeatedly give this stand up comedian the air time to spout his liberal trite........if he wants to do comedy then perhaps he should head over to comedy central....but to legitimize his opinions as 'important" by giving him the "floor" on your show is pathetic..........
senator Judd Gregg likely withdrew from the commerce sec appt because he disagrees with the stimulus plan and the white house's attemtpt to assimilate the census bureau, not because there are no moderate republicans.......listen to the people in business who really know our economy and not the morons in Congress who conducted that laughable hearing yesterday........they say spending a trillion dollars may get the economy in a lot more trouble than it already is.........and its no surprise that a man who abhors religion would think that a world where representatives don't pay taxes, athletes use PED's, and smoking marijuana is all ok.......bill, i can't wait for your next pearl of wisdom oh great one.......

Larry, Please ask Bill why he is opposed to Obama's tax cuts? These cuts are not backed by the Republicans. Most of them are for people who do not pay any taxes. These are backed by Obama. Why would you be against this for people in need. Joan, Richmond, Va.

Sharon Riley   February 12th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

What do you think of the dems & Obama trying to kill the e-verify bill?

sharon, cape breton   February 12th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

Hi Bill,
I live in a small city on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. We are lucky enough to have a flim series here and because of it I got to see Religulous last week. I am not a religious person, though I do believe in God. (in terms of a univeral conscious) Anyway, I didn't know what to expect seeing it, but I went with an open mind. I am soooo glad I went. I really enjoyed it. No, it didn't make me want to convert to the "other side", but I got what you were saying and I enjoyed the way you said it. I actually agreed with a lot of it and you gave me some stuff to think about. You are right, we are the creators of out own demise and if we don't wake up to that fact soon, we'll be kissing ourselves and our planet goodbye.   February 12th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

Sorry, one more question Bill–what do you think about the Republican party picking Steele as the head of the party. And his new scandal–paying money to his sister co. I think...

deb   February 12th, 2009 9:30 pm ET

Whats the difference between eight kids at once or having them one at time. Both ending with lets say fourteen. We in the end have to pay for the welfare single moms. selfish, vanity...consequences for the born and unborn...thoughtlessness and lack of responsibility that diminishes the value or meaning of a human life . What happened to our "freedoms!" Im not talking about the S. Carolina law against washing a horse in a bathtub... What do you think of it being a felony to play poker in your home(Indiana)?

Brad Fairchild   February 12th, 2009 9:31 pm ET

Larry, clearly Bill was bothered by the rejection of his movie in many parts of the counrty and the lack of support the stimulus package received from Republicans. It seems the root of his problem is his perceived lack of tolerance for views he is in agreement with. However, his sarcastic remarks about only 40% of Americans believing in macro-evolution serving as an indication that it still isn't a very bright country demonstrate just the kind of intolerance he is offended by. My question is why is Bill so fond of President Obama considering the President's professed faith in the Christian God? Does Bill believe the President's faith is authentic or simply a ploy to gain support from the Christian community?

Julie   February 12th, 2009 9:31 pm ET

I think Bill Maher is funny but one thing I disagreed with him about was his comment about the octuplets being "unnatural". My belief is that no Soul comes into this world without God's plan and purpose for their life. What if one of those eight babies grew up to cure cancer or became president?

Hugh Alex Bascom   February 12th, 2009 9:31 pm ET

For 8 years the country was bullied by the BUSH Regime. Using FEAR on a regular basis to scare people into an illegal WAR and host of other unethical decisions. Protesters have been viewed as "LEFT LIBERAL FANATICS" when voicing their opinions on War and the Environment.
Now Rush & Hannity are shaping middle Americas views. I am of the opinion that they are Wild Eyed War Mongers. Fanatics of HATE. They seem incapable of preaching anything but...

Being someone who has and will be touring live, what are your feelings on TicketMaster's and LiveNation's abuse of their oligopoly and the potential of them merging to form a monopoly?

Carma   February 12th, 2009 9:32 pm ET

I completely agree with Bill's stance on the Michael Phelp's issue. Although Phelps may be somewhat past the age of college age experimentation he most likely missed out on his chance to do such things because he was "marinating in chlorine". I would actually be proud not offended if Phelp's decided to become an advocate for marijuana legalization as opposed to apologizing for his actions.

vickie slogrove   February 12th, 2009 9:32 pm ET

To Bill Mahar

Do you ever regret some of the things you say – for example you said really awful things about a tiny baby unable to defend himself, i.e. the son of Sarah Palen.

Wayne   February 12th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

Mr. Maher,

As a Liberal why did you take such a cheap shot at Ross the Intern on Jay Leno's show the other night.

Leo   February 12th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

Do you think they should go after the Bush administration for crimes committed.

Shirley Schley   February 12th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

If you don't eat anything sold in a supermarket what kind of store do you shop in for food and what do you eat?

Pat S   February 12th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

I have tried many times to call into your show, but have never been succcessful. So I have decided to try blogging instead. I have to tell you how upsetting it is to listen to various of your guess put down the Canadian health care system without being well informed. We don't have to wait nine months to have surgery if it is an emergency.

My Mom fell ill one morning and I took her to the emergency at 8:00 am, by 4:30 pm the hospital had run all necessary test and had the results back that she had colon cancer. Surgery was performed at 6:30 pm that same evening. She under went 16 weeks of chemotherapy and this did not costs us one cent.

bill's opinion on our government's involvement trying to bring down barry bonds, et all for "lying" about steroid use and all the while spending tax payer money to do it.

joan martin   February 12th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

Hey Bill, The tax cuts are for people with low income. They need this extra money. Why are you against this?

Tony   February 12th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

What does Bill think of Obama relaxing the dress code in White House? Wasn't GW a little uptight on his rules

dawn   February 12th, 2009 9:34 pm ET

do you think weed should be legal and then taxed to help balance the budget. It would cost less and people would not be jailed and cost the tax payer 52,000 per person per year .

Anita Lesko   February 12th, 2009 9:34 pm ET

Imagine............the government already "taxes" and tracks the sale of alcohol and about the goverment adds, lets say, $0.10 (ten cents) to every sale of alcohol and cigarettes and it is then taken off the top of that tax when it is collected and injected back into the would be interesting to do the math and for someone to contemplate the could also do it with gas until the price gets out of control again..............I doubt anyone would even notice until it hits about $3.00/gal............

Regina   February 12th, 2009 9:34 pm ET

To Bill and Larry:
Do you think the expectations of Obama are too high and the media is too critical of him..or do you think inhereted too much of a mess from Bush and the republicans. A mess that is just too much for him to sift through in 10 days?

What do you think of the Banks, who have laid off thousands of people that are now seeking visa from the U.S. government to bring in oversees workers to fill jobs at those banks?

mary elizabeth kessel   February 12th, 2009 9:35 pm ET

Take out ALL the pork from the stimulus pkg. so the American people can see who NOT to vote for in two years. Personally, I haven't seen any politician we can be proud of. They are not in touch with their constitutents(sp?).

Linda   February 12th, 2009 9:35 pm ET

I agree that people are taking the steroid thing to seriously. Bond, A.Rod, Clemens not going to be admitted to Hall of Fame. What about during the times Aaron, Mays and those guys during the 60's were using uppers and pills to perform, none of those thing are considered performing enchancing. So I sick of those sports reporters want to be players with their holier than thou comments need to be judging these players. There were so many players using steroids so I would guess these guys were on a level playing field

Caro   February 12th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

Wall street CEO should be embarrassed by the fact that they are miss-used money from the relief package that was provided by the government, makes think that they are becoming idealist list Chavez, which by the way should be more conscious of the way he speaks about his country and the US.

Gloria Ellis   February 12th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

I saw Religulous at the Traverse City Film Festival last year and really enjoyed it. The tickets sold out soon after they were offered and luckily I got two. I am going to see it again, it was so outrageous and fun. Thanks for taking more chances.

About President Obama's nominees not paying their taxes.......
Many liberals have had a hard time paying their income taxes, especially after GWB started bombing babies in Iraq and we had to pay for that. How can these christians supporting the war in Iraq justify all those innocent young lives taken? But they speak out of the other side of their mouths when it comes to what they say is the killing of an unborn child. How many pregnant women in Iraq have our bombs killed? I didn't pay my taxes and gov finally put a lein on my home, so I got a loan and payed them off. It didn't sit very well with me though.

Just heard Bill Mayer say chickens are grown using steroids and hormones. This is absolutly NOT true, at least in Canada.
I would suggest Bill check into the facts on this.

Chickens are grown for meat in 5 to 6 weeks by using good genetics, feed rations without steroids or hormones and good conditions in the barns.

Thank you from Rika in New York

Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Kenneth Wu   February 12th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

In Oct 08 I sent letter to Editor, Washington Post but was not published. New SecTreasury does not yet have a plan. As in WW II we should have "Victory Bonds" so citizens can buy them to create a pot of bail out cash (not tax payers money to be doled out by Congress. These should be in an array of targeted bail outs: (Rehire unemploywed, already experienced, trained..who can reboot the crashed economy. Obama's plan to creat new jobs that will not come on line in next 4 years or more will not produce immediate results.
Congress and President should not condemn bonuses that were employment and incentive contracts already committed by investors in annual meetings and adopted by the board of directors.
Auto execs that flew in by corporate jets should not be crucified. Should they lay off the pilors and crew and sell of the aicrafted already owned at a loss - thus causing more employment – considering that major airlines are already laying off flihgt crews?

Jake   February 12th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

What is your take on the arrests made in association with the Michael Phelps incident. I am a South Carolinian and I'm embarrassed that our law enforcement has nothing better to do.

Trish   February 12th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

America cannot lead until we become scientific and logical, shed that conservative religious right that won't even believe in evolution. I wish evolution could speed up and weed out those old white Republican men who are going down with their money tightly gripped in their fat white hands that are covering their ears so that they cannot hear science or logic, while keeping their drug-addled brains in their skulls?

Hey Dave in Fl great answer. You should be on TV.

Michael Bowman   February 12th, 2009 9:37 pm ET

Why is nobody making mention of Ted Kennedy not upholding his senate duties but you can be sure he is making sure he is getting his salary? I realize I am risking insensitivity, but does his oath of office not matter? He promised to fullfill his "duties of office", but when he may or may not even make it to the biggest vote of the year, I cannot see how he is doing his job. I am sorry that he is ill, but if Pres. Obama had this condition, he would not be allowed (by us Americans) to show up maybe one day every few months!

Anita Merrigan   February 12th, 2009 9:38 pm ET

Why do the anti-abortion advocates refer to themselves as "pro-life"? It is very funny how the "pro-lifers" are many of the same people that vote against environmentally friendly laws. They are actually "pro-fetus" because the only life-form they are concerned with saving. They typically could care less what happens after the fetus comes out of womb.
Fetuses are hardly an endangered species, and, no, all of them are not special. Fetuses can eventually grow into criminals that will use up the earth's resources. Few people make a real difference in the world, and even when they do, there are typically other individuals with similar ideas emerging around the same time period. Pro-lifers need to expand the range of lifeforms on which they expend so much emotion and energy.

Dear Bill,

I would like to commend you on your movie, Religulous. You took the chance and made people think. So kudos to you for putting yourself out there. There are a number of other disclosures that I would add regarding the history of religion. But, I must say that I do believe in a supreme Creator and as I have had five life-after-life experiences, including one when I was declared dead for 2 1/2 hours, I can provide first hand insights on eternal life.

joan martin   February 12th, 2009 9:39 pm ET

Bill, Tim Geithner was the guy working for Bush that gave the banks the money. If he did a bad job for Bush how in the world can he do any better for Obama?

Bill, thanks for that response to the question about what you think of the government giving money to the banks who used it to pay out exhorbitant bonuses to their executives.

We seam to forget that since the Reagan admisnistration, democrats have been cleaning up the huge messes craeted by republicans. T

Question for Bill Maher:

1. Why is no one talking about and tracking the amount of wealth accumulated by the Bush family and his advisors through the military actions and oil iondustry.

2. Why is no one tracking the wealth accumulation of these same people through the bailout programs?

Arianne   February 12th, 2009 9:39 pm ET

There are alot of things that Bush did that Obama has already started trying to undo (for example Gitmo) or is attempting to undo (contraception in the public discourse). How successful do you feel he may be in the face of still pervasive uber-Right control in the Congress, on Wall Street, and other policy leaders?

Bill Maher   February 12th, 2009 9:39 pm ET

Bill – You are a one-sided, arrogant left wing person who is not willing or able to see two sides of an argument. Can you explain why you are so anti Bush? It's absurd.

It's true that Bush was not up for the job, but it's the average American who voted him in......just as they did with Obama. The same Americans......maybe a little younger and persons with darker skin pigment.

I love Larry King and Bill Maher together. Tonight I couldn't watch it,
I could only hear it.
because the background on the show kept moving and that kind of movement causes me to have seizures at most and nausea at the least. Please. I know I am not the only person watching the show who has these problems.
Does this minority deserve to watch Larry King instead of just hearing it?

Why would you rather believe in evolution which according to the Smithsonian Magazine this month (200 birth of Darwin and Lincoln on the same Day), is still a mystery in interpretation than the fact that you or I came from the first man and woman according to the book of Genesis. Please do not reply with your usual comment about being created in 7 literal days when you do not really know what the Bible's time period is..

Jon Byers   February 12th, 2009 9:42 pm ET

As a lay person, not an economist, it seems we fall into our most severe recessions following extended periods of Republican control of the White House... 1974-1980 following Nixon and Vietnam, 1990-1991 following Reagan and Bush and Iraq 1, 2007-current following GW Bush and war in Iraq.

Seems Democratic policies seem to actually stimulate real economic growth and fiscal responsibility vs. war/military spending and massive deficits.

Roger Cochern   February 12th, 2009 9:42 pm ET

What will be the direction of this seasons... keeping them honest? Giving a voice to the American people?

Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Kenneth Wu   February 12th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

Congress is not helping to revive the economy by forcing Goldman Sachs to cancel the Vegas off site event. Airlines will lose revenue, hotels and workers there will be laid off...thus more depressed economy and loss of jobs in the service industry. The off site meetings are designed to recover from a sick economy. Politicians know little about solving economic problems. Markets will perish or recover not because of political machinations but only because of the creative and deliberative plans and actions of those that creat wealth in the market place. I am willing to come on your show to expound on concepts and action plans that President Obama and the Treasury Secretary can consider for a viable and achievable plan.

Kathryn   February 12th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

On your view on the funding of arts in the school system, i would have to disagree. Being a senior in high school myself, the arts are a major part of any teenagers or child psychological advancement. You say you don't think we should fund it, but i have a question for you. Do you think that when they say "education first" they mean "education first to get cut"?
I will say, however, I do agree with you on the Michael Phelps drug scandal. Majority of citizens in the United States do use marijuana. Students that walk into my school come high and drunk, but the ones who smoke marijuana and don't care are the ones who go far in life. Granted there are those who do fall and never get themselves together, but some of the most intellectual people have smoked marijuana. You don't hear about people who overdose on marijuana.

Jose Andino   February 12th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

hello larry...i'm from paraguay and i'm a big fan of your tv show and a fan of bill as well.........Ernesto Zedillo of Mexico, Cesar Gaviria of Colombia, and Fernando Henrique Cardoso of Brazil are former presidents of their respective countries. The trio is urging that South America, and the rest of the world, re-evaluate the war on drugs. "The problem is that current policies are based on prejudices and fears and not on results," Gaviria said. They are also advocating legalisation of question is think mariguana should be legal????

In todays society business screams a disaster is coming and the government gives away our money without even knowing if they really need it. The businesses are caught paying out bonuses, buying jets while at the same time laying off workers, but why shouldn't they, we payed them enough money so they are getting rid of high salary employees, cutting their cost . We the people are paying for our own job loss. Until our government starts governing for the people instead of for the money this situation will get worse not better no matter what they do.

Michael Lebowitz   February 12th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

Why does Bill say that the Republicans have been in charge the last 8 years? That is not correct. I seem to recall that in 2006 the Democrats took control of Congress and things really went south in these last two years. In all fairness you need to acknowledge that the fix we are in is from years of incompetence on both sides and to say and think that George Bush alone could bring about the current situation all on his own is a thought that only an uninformed and uneducated person could espouse.

Avery   February 12th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

I could care-a-less if Michael Phelps smoked a little weed one night at a party or not. What I do care about are all the registered sex offenders living amoungst us, in the same communities as our children. What do you think should be done with these perverts, Bill?

Ckelly   February 12th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

PAT S: YES!!! we have a first rate free medical system...there are some waits depending where you live but my 79 mother has received the best of medical care in BC...CT scans, wonderful follow up ANY test she needs and meds almost covered 100%...From what I understand in some states there are shortage of doctors, waits and problems EVEN with a high premium private insurance company...We are indeed very lucky!!

Diane Tokarz   February 12th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

Bill Maher consistantly insults the american people by saying we are not so bright...and yet he expects us to watch his show or see his movie...? Bill Maher is nothing short than a waste of time...the only "not smart" americans are those who look and listen to him.

I watch Larry King no matter who he has on.

Excited to have you back on air next week, missed you a lot Bill! There was a theory discussed recently about what if the stimulus package was to distribute a million dollars to each person in the U.S. and allow them to pay off their debt and spend that money only in certain areas sort of like coupons for an automobile or something to that effect. Think this would be the better way to go?

Take Care!

I would just like to point out that I'm annoyed by Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh acting like there needs to be a republican "Revolution." As if they haven't had the country for the last 8 years... and this is where we are.

shannon Shostack   February 12th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

Obviously the new stimulus package is on everyone's minds. Do you think that there are parites out on the media ie. Ruch Limbaugh who would rather see the country fail over their own egos than to support a common effort towards the common good? How deep do some egos run?

Roger Cochern   February 12th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

Randy M - SLC   February 12th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

Lets get this straight....Tax cuts are "spending by other means". The exponential increases in the natl debt over the past 30 years have ALL come during GOP regimes (starting with Reagan). You are the party of a lawless few that turn a blind eye to Democracy in favor of the military industrial complex.

Your policies have systematically destroyed the working class, and for my part, you shouldn't be allowed a voice in this debate at all, let alone the power to affect it's outcome. Get out of the way GOP, and let those that "think well" fix your mess.

As a moderate republican I don't always agree with Bill Maher, but if there's one thing the "right" is RIGHT in the US is in combatting aggressively against the most dangerous force today against humanity, that is 'radical Islam', whether its Palestinian Hamas (though they are masters in fake "victimhood", including creative tactics of killing their own kids in order to blame Israel for it) , or Iran's Hezbollah, Ahmadinejad, Al Qeada or Iraqi militants, Taliban or Lashkar Jihad.

PeeOde   February 12th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

Don't you find it strange that Ashley Judd could attack Sarah Palin on shooting wolves when Ashley Judd supports abortion on demand; in short, Judd supports the welfare of a wild dog over that of a unborn child.

Michele McCowan   February 12th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

I would like to know what Bill is doing at this time towards animal rights, as he is on the board of peta, but I don't hear a lot about what he is actively working on. Thanks!

Mike   February 12th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

PLEASE enlighten those of us who get most of thier political info from television, what exactly is this stimulus bill going toward? Politicians seem to always sidestep the details.

ken   February 12th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

What do you think about that sheriff serving warrents and searches on 7 of the 8 people arrested for possesson of pot in the mike phellps case

Dobby   February 12th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

The current economy is like a kayak on a deep lake with a punctured hole spewing in water. Obama and the Democrats solution to fix the problem is to drill a much larger hole in the bottom of the kayak to let all the water drain out.

Paul Krugman is upset because he wants an even larger hole drilled in the bottom of the kayak.

mark   February 12th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

OK let me throw this at you, you can stimulate the economy just by capping interest rates on credit cards to 10 – 15 %, that puts money into peoples pockets and stimulates the economy and doesn't coast anything nor is it any kind of spending, a stimulus bill does not have to include spending guys, I guess Obama didn't figure that out yet you too Maher

Jill Smith   February 12th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

What happened to the money Bush and Paulsen gave the Banks?? Why don't the Republicans ask that question?..

We are enjoying your talk with Bill Maher but it seems like you are breating for commercials every 90 seconds. What gives? It's getting annoying.

Bismark   February 12th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

Why is everyone suddenly worried about who is going to pay back the money for the stimulus package! You haven't asked, "Who is going to pay back the Trillion dollar debt the Chinese are holding for a war we should never have been in." Gee, give this guy a break. He has been in office three weeks. The other folks had eight years to screw up the government.

Glen Davis   February 12th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

The Republican disinformation machine is running at full blast. Why is Obama not fighting back?

jenoye roland cole   February 12th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

Bravo, Bill Maher! He has often been the best political commentator these last six or eight years–and again tonight. He's right on on the Stimulus Bill and the one-note Republicans.
How can one person be so right on about the issues and funny at the same time. He's our 21st century Mark Twain.

michael   February 12th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

I Just heard you say that this was not a "Pork filled" bill???
Have you even read this thing? $350 million for STD prevention? Where is the Job in that? (unless your making the China), 35 million for a mouse in California? OH and $5 BILLION for ACORN? Why? so they can hire the $35 million mouse to vote??
This is...well you know.
Please Bill, take your head out of the sand.

ralph Bateman   February 12th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

Regrettably, The stimulus will for the most part fail.

‘Put the money on the street’ was a comment to bankers at the recent congressional hearing…

Great! Give it to the people… We’ll put it in the banks, the auto dealerships and the high street stores.

However, the problem of course is that the majority of American consumers are up to their necks in debt with less than stellar credit ratings. Their debt to earnings ratios are precluding them from being able to take advantage of lower interest rate loans.

We do not qualify for refinancing home loans or credit, particularly as banks are now requiring stellar credit ratings in order to qualify for credit.

In order for us to become ‘consumers’ again, the Government must directly offer ALL American homeowners low (less than 4%) refinancing on ALL primary home loans currently held by citizens.

Here’s how it WILL work:

1. Offer low interest (30 year fixed) home refinancing loans for 18 months.

2. These loans must be available for all (primary) homeowners with a FICO average score of 625 and above.

3. During this 18-month period, new rules and regulations governing the lending and credit markets must be prepared and implemented (to avoid this debacle occurring again) the moment the eighteen month application period has elapsed.

Sanjay   February 12th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

how is the stimulus package going to help an unemployed auto worker become a constuction worker on a highway, are there going to be cross training programs? also, why are still jobs at mcdonalds, dont people want to work?

Mike, Dallas   February 12th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

I have been a fan of Bill's for a long time. I don't always agree with Bill, but do get a good laugh most of the time. I looked over some of the plan online today. What is amazing is the amount of money in some of these proposals and how few jobs each item is estimated to generate...

Sage of Maryland   February 12th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

Regarding the Octomom, she needs to be made to repay the Federal government for the medical bills and the student loans that she has admittedly misused. She is also not only abusing her children, she is abusing her mother who is saddled with a responsibility for helping to raise 14 grandchildren in her declining years. How unfair!

Mike   February 12th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

Bill is funny but absolutely clueless when it comes to politics. The bill is filled with pork. Pork is anything that wont stimulate the economy.

The truth hurts, but lies soothe itching ears. I would like to know why Bill Maher made such fundamental errors in Religulous such as Muslims believe Mohammed is God like Christians believe Jesus is God.

Such uninformed and ignorant statements like this are what you get in the mainstream. Not a single Muslim would ever state that Mohammed is God! Hahaha, such foolishnes!

Ann Kirkland   February 12th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

The media needs to be part of the solution. Given 2/3 of the economy is public confidence, the media should do its civic duty by promoting positive aspects of the stimulus bill to build confidence in the future. I'm calling on Bill Maher, Larry King, Lou Dobbs and even Russ Limbaugh to use their power for the greater good.

And I'm changing the channel on those that continue to spout negativity.

Jet   February 12th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

Dear Bill and Larry-

Here's my take on the Octuplets and who should pay for them. I think that the fertility doctor should bear full fiscal responsibility for these children until they are fully grown. He knew that his patient had 6 children, he knew that she and some of the children were collecting disability.

He was in this for the money, and now he should pay up. Not the people of California. That's just my take. What do you think?

By the way- you both looked very sexy tonight!

Bill, you usually entertain the hell out of me but I am a little sick of you acting like smoking pot is no big deal. It is in fact illegal and I would hope my kids see michael get some sort of punishment for doing it. In the culture my kids are growing up in what they see is people doing illegal stuff all the time and walking away without consequence. My kids are not celebrities, athletes or bank execs so if they get caught doing it they need to know they will get in some trouble.

Amarissa   February 12th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

"Why does Bill say that the Republicans have been in charge the last 8 years? That is not correct. I seem to recall that in 2006 the Democrats took control of Congress and things really went south in these last two years. In all fairness you need to acknowledge that the fix we are in is from years of incompetence on both sides and to say and think that George Bush alone could bring about the current situation all on his own is a thought that only an uninformed and uneducated person could espouse."

Couldn't have said it better!

Jesse   February 12th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

Each one of the octuplets should be named after a failed obama cabinet member.

Mark Hart   February 12th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

Bill must have a split personality; first he wants us to get together and take back some of the controls lost to government, but when the lady joins and back his having the rights to talk he ridicules her like a "Don Rickles" but with a brain! Which way does he want it, or is he really just "riding" the middle and wants to ridicule both sides?

We are spending 10 to 12 billion a year on the war. We are going half way around the world to protect the American people. If that was spent to secure all borders to protect the American people, wouldn’t there be a huge amount left over for the economy?

Why can’t that huge surplus of Iraqs’ be used to help our economy? Maybe trade some oil for the cost of those wars. We need to be paid back for our efforts!!!!

Are these questions too simple or logical that they aren’t even considered?

Please explain why I should consider anything Bill Maher says as relevant. I listened to too many "blanket statements" about people like for example Sarah Palin that are very deceptive in that they contain just enough truth that he can argue them, but they are not really true. Enough already. I am sick of this nonsense and I cannot be the only person in this country who feels this way.

We have devoted fans and religiously watch on Friday nights...but we can't BELIEVE what you said about the role of government and the arts...THAT is the most shocking thing we've ever heard come out of your mouth! Of course we need the NEA...and state funding for arts organizations...not only for all the obvious reasons, but for the very real reason that the arts spark economic activity. Look forward to the return of Real Time and debating THIS issue...

How difficult would it be to investigate these CEO's of the failed banks and mortgage companies etc., OFF SHORE Bank Accounts? Rest assured these guys have not spent all their millions in bonuses and severances......there could be the answer to how to foot the bailout bill/stimulus

Henry Panethiere   February 12th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

My home is paid for – my car is paid for – no debt here. Why as a taxpayer am I going to have to bailout all the deadbeat mortgage holders. If they can't pay the mortgage – maybe they can pay the rent. My grandpa had to in 1930. I'm not getting any help.

And all those student loans – seems like they all go to spring break in Florida and drive newer model cars – then complain about having huge loans to pay back.

Thank you – Hank Panethiere

deb   February 12th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

Hey Bill why don't you take a pay cut and give the rest away. How about all your Hollywood buddies do the same.
Pool all your money and start a health care program. Hollywood can support it all by itself. If you care so much about the people.

reese   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

. Wake up Mr. Maher – Obama is a spokesman for terrorists rights.
And speaking of wealth inequality – what about that of the Hollywood elite? I don't think the Republicans had anything to do with that.
It seems to be politcally correct for you and your show biz buddies to make as much as you like. HOW HYPOCRITICAL of you and your liberal views.

Rick   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

I paid of 40k during the Bush 8 years. It was hard but we stoped our excess spending! Don't talk to me about using credit to live high on the hourse. The American people need to wake up. Credit makes the American people slaves to the bank. Pay day loans, Title Loans, Option Arms etc... just pay off you debt and save your money.

Kelli from Tampa   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

You are right about Afganistan... and did I not hear that something like 89K American weapons are MIA and in the hands of the Taliban today?

DJ Salisbury   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

I'm a fan. Bill, but you got it wrong on arts funding...European nations support national theaters, ballet companies, opera companies...fully funded by the government because the states values the contribution of the arts to the lives of their citizens. We have a pallid facsimile in the NEA, which is significantly underfunded. The arts (unlike the major league sports about which y'all were talking) on the whole CANNOT SURVIVE without government subsidies. Sure, the film industry will always thrive...but regional theaters are struggling...and many have closed. And if the NEA were abolished, 'starving artists' would number in the hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions.

Andy   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

Bill, stay on topic. President Obama preached that his administration would bring the political parties and our nation together. You are obviously a Obama supporter, where in your rhetoric is the same message????
You shouldn't lambast Republicans, and only support Democrats when in fact public opinion is rapidly falling for the stimulus bill-how can that be a Republican only opinion???

MARY MONACO Gales Ferry,CT   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

Can the bills in Congress be posted on the internet IN FULL so we can all read them BEFORE Congress votes on them?...AND have an Accounting of the vote???

I am a senior in college and I am shocked to hear your opinion about legalizing marijuana. You are saying that if sugar in breakfast cereal contributes to diabetes (in kids) and it is legal, than we should just make marijuana legal too?! Does not make any sense.
Lots of people actually look at you as an example and you are saying the most outrageous things...How can you even say that marijuana is not harmful for you?! Medical research has been done and it has determined various negative effects that the drug has on the health of a human being. Maybe you should stop smoking and read what medical professionals think about the issue before expressing your opinion on prime time TV when different type of people (including teenagers) are watching the show.

Mike   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

If my memory is correct, it was a democratic congress that passed the first bail out? I like how Bill tries to blame it on Bush. If Bush was able to pass that bill on his own, then why cant Obama pass this bill on his own? The answer is, in this country it has to go through congress. This means that the President and Congress are responsible for legislation.

Nate Boyd   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

I feel the government should look into the institutions finance's too determing which indivisual credit has been in defaut with these institution. If these institutions receive any part of the TARP money they shall be obligated to wipe only the default portion of one's credit report.
This will make many people credit worthy enough to go out and make purchases without being denied.More people will start spending, which then begin putting money into the economy.

Luke   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

We cant treat our olympic champions like criminals, or any of our non violent citizens. It is time to legalize marijuana to slow the Mexican drug war, and to put more money in Americans pockets, and to put more money in the governments pocket. And to take money out of gangs pockets. Phelps is proof that responsible people smoke marijuana, too. Like Bill said there are many things worse than weed that are readily available to us. If we legalize the one drug that has never killed anyone, nothing will change except we would have more money and less violence.

Mike Kirk   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

Larry or Bill,

Why can't anyone tell us why the money spent on illegal immigrants couldn't be halted and used for stimulating the economy of California as well as the US.

Martin   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

The people providing the most stimulus to the economy are the people who pay the highest tax rate (35%), spend the most, and employ the most people. The stimulus plan shuns those people because the President puts class warfare ahead of stimulus. Now we know: CHANGE means SPEND.

Gerardo Mesa   February 12th, 2009 9:55 pm ET

The $500,000 cap for CEO asking for bailout is all good, but I think they will still find a way to get their hands on the money for personal gain. Don't you think it'd be better to use the $350B bailout on the Stimulus bill instead?

MarieAnne   February 12th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

We should have only "advising CIA agents" in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon (shielding from Ahmadinejad's Hezbollah) , Egypt (at the border with the Hamas genocidal fascists) not a real army, think about it.

Scott   February 12th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

Who has been in control of congress since 2006. It has not been the Republicans. I am a freedom loving American. When government gets out of our lives and lets us live our lives that is freeedom. The economy is not a zero-sum game. Because one person has a lot doesn't mean someone else has less. Government cannot create jobs. Name me the last time a poor man ever gave anyone a job. Let the buisnesses in the country be competitive here and overseas and we will have growth. ie cut the capitol gains tax and corporate tax rates. Ours is hight than China for pete's sake.

Scott O'Neal   February 12th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

Bill Maher's mind is sharp, he is just very misguided. He is as obsessed with the conservatives as Rush and Hannity are with the liberals.
My problem with Maher is his dribble about no God. He's a typical Hollywood/TV Celebrity that thinks he can make his own morality just because he does not like that of God. Oh well...I guess his choice is anarchy over democracy, amorality over immorality. Yeah...he's a role model, isn't he.
There's a verse in the Bible that says that it would be better for someone to tie a millstone around his neck and jump into the sea and be drowned than to lead one innocent soul away from God. Bill, if that doesn't bother you at all, then you are sicker than we are.

Ron   February 12th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

hello bill,

what do you think of the e verify being in the stimulus package to let legal u.s citzens and immigrants get the jobs that are created as a result of this stimulus plan? And why is the united states chamber of commerce against keeping jobs in the united states and making sure those here are legal immigrants?

rome, georgia

robert   February 12th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

With the greatest respect and admiration for both of your wonderfully stimulating minds, I'd like to share this idea for correcting the financial hurricane that's happening.
Just eliminate debt completely.
No one owes anything! Everybody goes to work tomorrow like always, keeps everything they have, including their bank accounts.
It would work for me.
This would work for everyone I've asked. Could it actually work?

Sharon   February 12th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

I do not understand what the Republican want. They couldn't even agree with President Bush, who was the same party. These Republicans find it easy to yell "tax cut" but how can anyone utilize them when they do not have a job. Also, the Replublicans allowed Wall Street to go crazy. I hold them for a lot of our economy woes now. I will also remember who voted for the stimulus package. At least President Obama isn't afraid to try "something" instead of doing nothing and listening to the Republicans wine.

Lily   February 12th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

I can't understand why the likes of Limbaugh, Coulter, O'Riley, Hanity, and such....are taken so seriously by the Republicans...let alone be seen as authorities on what is going on, they are dangerous individuals and they certainly do not have the best interests of America and the American people at heart.
They are nothing more than domestic terrorists..creating fear and hate. The unethical rhetoric and underhanded tactics..that is so Bush won't work anymore. Most Americans, including Republicans, want to to be able to work together and do something positive for the country. People like these hateful individuals really have no place in our country's consciousness anymore. We are moving on in a spirit of unity...not hateful dialogs and disparaging remarks against others. I wish everyone would stop making such a fuss over them...if we ignore them maybe they will go away!??!!
I'm not sure I understand their motives...what is it they want? Would they be happy if the country fails completely and never recovers?

Tim   February 12th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

GOP-Grand Old Party or, as we're getting to know them better these days, grumpy old politicians. Now that the people have spoken loud and clear we see the Republicans acting like little children, angry and upset that they no longer control things in Washington. What the country needs now is someone to drive the car out of the ditch–that same car that the Republicans drove into the ditch. Forget bi-partisan support for the new administration because it's just not going to happen. The Republican children are still crying over the 2006 elections and now with the 2008 results they simply cannot function. When you're seeing red it's very difficult to see anything else.

angela   February 12th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

arguements about Evolution are so irrelevant, unless you know the absolute truth in the universe dont go there please, its just so pointless.

kadie georgia   February 12th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

Hi Larry and to Bill – thanks for all the honesty – not enough of that in the media – my question is what are your thoughts on the "no child left behind" situation, and the state of our public schools. In an environment where we place more importance on test scores than actual learning, and have all but eliminated the arts and music – how will our children's education ever hold a candle to ours? Now, with the economy being what it is – what type of aid will be available to those of us that will need it to send our kids to college?

Jesse   February 12th, 2009 9:57 pm ET

Alexander Yousif   February 12th, 2009 9:57 pm ET

Bill, during the primary you said, in Larry king live, the American people should elect a president who is smarter than them so he can lead them, other wise what is the point of electing similar to them, or something like that .
the question is, you think the American people took your advise.

michael   February 12th, 2009 9:57 pm ET

By the way Bill,
It was Barney, and Friends that directed Fannie and Freddie to lend to less than credit worthy borrowers, way back when your buddy Bill was our Fearless Leader!
And I liked Bill Clinton! But How can Barney Franks and Chuck Schumer really stand up there and come down on lenders, when they were the ones that put these policies into place and then stepped aside without any rules or regulations.
Mr. Maher, sorry to tell you that BOTH DEMS & REPUBS are to blame.
When we can get this generation out of office and bring in some common sense, then we'll be ok!

Stimulus package. Gives rights to rats to live in San Francisco, puts money in the pockets of thieves, ensures that the illegal immigrants have secure jobs, and leaves the American citizens right back in the toilet.

Put E-Verify back into the Bill at least. That way legal citizens can have a stab at the jobs that do not require you to be bilingual.

Tim H. Royal   February 12th, 2009 9:58 pm ET

Just a couple of questions: Can we abolish the Republican Party?
Why do Republicans have the Elephant as their symbol when they have
such short memories. Why don't they call themselves the Obstructionist Party. Why does being fiscally responsible always have to cut funds for health, education and welfare? Thank You. Tim.

Josh   February 12th, 2009 9:58 pm ET

There you go! Asked a question about a Democrat and scandal, and doesn't answer, just talks about waht a Republican! C'mon Bill, Why? Why? Why?

Monica   February 12th, 2009 9:59 pm ET

Bill, I'm a rookie at politics, but do you think the restraint from republicans for supporting the "spending bill" has anything to do with the loss of bribes from lobbyist?

James in Atlanta   February 12th, 2009 9:59 pm ET

I think if we could do two things to fix our economy.

What do you think if we end the war on drugs and on war on terror would this save our economy?

Could this help the housing crisis.

employs construction workers or small businesses

Say a city has 1000 foreclosed homes

average payment to banks for all the foreclosed homes is say $55,000.00 which would total $55 million dollars(banks receive this)

Raffle price for each home $150,000 @ $50.00 each with 3,000 tickets issued

raised money on 1000 homes through lotto $150,000,000.00

winners receive home outright.
they are giving enough of the money raised on the house to have it remodeled or repaired
remaining monies go to gov't

City pays $55,000.00 for foreclosed home from bank(in form of IOU till home is raffled off or upfront)
City pays winner up to $25,000.00 for remodeling if needed if no remodeling is needed then give $10,000 for winner to use however they choose.
left with $70,000.00 profit on each property to local gov't.
on 1000 homes that equals $70,000,000.00

City profits total of $15,000,000.00 from raffle (city receives this) plus property taxes plus sales taxes from businesses either remodeling the home or furniture sales. plus a family has a new home with no mortgage equals a spending consumer for the economy with money to spread around.

all these numbers can be suited to individual gov't preferences and purchase price of individual properties. You can raise as much money as you want on each home by selling more tickets. if it was a foreclosed house that was $224,000 to purchase from bank then raise $324,000.00 by selling 6480 tickets or 12960 tickets for $25.00 dollars.

Each home can be purchased by the local gov't and sold off in a lottery system. You can target a specific profit margin you want on each home by tickets offered for it.

So neighborhood benefits with better property values as homes are occupied and remodeled for more wealth.
Winner receives new home with no mortgage. so winner also wins wealth with the paid off home.
City makes profit on home. City receives property taxes. City takes care of homes sitting around doing nothing.
City can also partner with home owners of empty homes that no one occupies to enter home in lotto too and receive half the profit on home.
Creates jobs. People facing foreclosure could also enter home into lotto if unable to save home. (judge can decide this)

But then, you are out of a job because of it aren't you?

I'm neither a Democrat nor a Republican but a father and a husband. I work in public safety and my wife is a teacher. We're middleclass and barely make it living paycheck to paycheck. From what we can see this stimulus bill is on the backs of the middle class again. When we hear that there is even one project that is not needed in this bill and/or previous bills it doesn't sit well with us or a lot of our middleclass friends. We're sick of it!

Not only is it rediculouse that government employees get 14 paid holidays but they also get 5 weeks paid vacation. If we lower the paid holidays and paid vacation it would help our deficit.
How about doing a show on this topic and maybe someone could explain why they would need all this time off with pay.

What do you think of Cliff Arnebeck's narrowing his focus to Karl Rove. Obama can focus on the economy while Eric Holder can bring Karl Rove to justice especially after Karl Rove threatened Mike Connell and then Connell's plane crashed. As long as Rove is allowed to get away with all of his crimes nothing will change.

I used to be a big fan of Bill until I heard him say that the government should not support the NEA. I am the Artistic Director of a ballet company in Florida, that has received funding from the NEA, and have started a school in collaboration with the local school district. We are an A+ school with over 30 percent at risk students who are making great strides because of the arts. We are out performing all others in the state, I have 6 academic teachers with a full staff of art, dance, music, french teachers. This is a free school. Because of the arts these kids can achieve, the education system in this country is broken, as artists we are focused on excellence. I think Bill has obviously forgotten where he came from and that if it weren't for the NEA supporting projects in under served communities we would be stuck with only the rich having opportunity and culture. I am so disappointed with him and want CNN to show the other side, for there are many success stories. Contact me and I will show you what the arts can do in a community for education, the economy and education. I also live in a Republican stronghold in the panhandle of Florida.

Peolpe! How does anyone agree with this man? He is going straight to hell? Has he ever heard of the power of positive thinking? That's not religous, he might find himself a happier man. All he does is talk about negative issues. It's sad. But, it pays the bills I guess, because after reading this stuff, apparently a lot of people trust him

Obama was elected my legal American citizens, some who are unemployed, this stimulus package is supposed to go to unemployed USA citizens, not ensuring that E-VERIFY is included to make sure all the money is spent to give LEGAL Americans jobs is a travesty and an insult to all legal US citizens, so much for the change we were all supposed to get!!

Jon Byers   February 12th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

To Bill Maher......I am an Episcopalian were my grandparents. I asked my grandmother 60 or so years ago "What is God?" She replied, "God is love." She had that put on their gravestone (her's and grand daddy's.... in case anyone else ever wondered....) In a way Bill, if you are correct about love being real but not God....What if God is love as my precious grandmother believed........think about it.

Josh   February 12th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Don't get me wrong....if it is all for show....more power to him! I don't think it is though. He really believes the filth that comes out his mouth.Thank goodness he does not have children!

Jon Byers   February 12th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

God is Love is a beautiful concept and no one should ever take that view from someone, but...

To a Hindu... "Gods are Love" is just as valid.

And to an Atheist... "Love is Life" or a Humanist... "People are Love".

Love is love... it is universally real, even if it is too commonly "CONDITIONAL"

I don't view Bill's comments as negative....(although, I can see how a person can)....He is pointing out the lack of common sense and what is happening that we DON'T see in the media.

I do disagree with him at times. (ie tonight when he said: people don't agree on evolution ,however, scientists do.- That is categorically incorrect!) It depends on what area of science the scientist in.

Think of Bill as a watchdog. When the media is lying Bill has the part of the story they don't want you to know.

I hope that helps a little.

Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Kenneth Wu   February 12th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

During WW II there were "Victory Bonds" that patriotic citizens can buy to fund the War Department. I wrote a letter to the Washington Post last Fall but it was not published. The biggest buyer of the Victory Bonds, I was told, was Meteropolitcan Life Insurance Company.

I propose a series of such bonds targeted for bailing out banks, insurance companies, auto and heavy contruction equipment manufactuers to recall laid off or displaced workers to return to viable manufacturing jobs; and to do long term research and development for energy efficient cars aznd trucks; and to develop profitable alternative generators of electricity. Interests earned from these bonds should be tax free or tax deferred and repayment should be by beneficiaries of those being bailed out. There will be less regulation by the government and less abuses from politicians who azre wont to hysteria and theatrics.

Sy not brightlvia   February 12th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

The truth always hurts Diane – many of you – Republicans – are not bright because you have not been taught to think outside the box – in other words you are brainwashed especially to hate anyone who thinks differently. Bill Maher speaks the truth always and he is so right. and that is why you should watch his show – to become educated. Obama is a breath of fresh air – and his brillance is amazing. I predict he will try and try and try to bring the Republicans on board but in the end he will throw in the towel as he learns that in order to bring change he has to be met halfway and with those sickos it will never happen and hey a big percent of the American people voted for Obama and more will vote for him next time. As Bill says – he and Michele are real! Republicans could care less about the american people. As an ex Catholic, happy athiest, Bill I loved your movie. Have him on once a month Larry!

Jon Byers   February 12th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Kenneth Wu...

Why not consider an extension of that idea.

The auto industry is in shambles, and is one of our last major, durable good manufacturing sectors.

Why not allocate funds to motivate purchases of US automobiles?

Govt. secured loans (not unlike FHA) for auto purchases, and rebates for the purchase of existing inventory... as much as 50% of the sticker price.

In exchange, the US govt. exchanges dollar for dollar the rebate money to automaker in exchange for stock. This stock could then be sold by the govt in the form of clustered investment bonds to the general public.

Automakers get much needed funds, Americans get new cars, the govt. has the potential to get a return on it's investments, and those buying the bonds may actually realize a profit on their auto purchase.

John Smith   February 12th, 2009 11:05 pm ET

I realize that there are many people who love Bill Maher, consider him super intelligent, and just hang on his every word of wisdom. Sorry to break with the majority but Bill Maher is not my Guru. I don't find him particularly funny, and as for his form of humor, sarcasm, in my humble opinion, is the lowest form of humor. And no, I did not tune in to your program this evening. I do find it humorous though that Bill Maher and Ann Coulter are planning to appear together on some show. Amazing that two people at absoulut opposite ends of the political spectrum can find something in one another to like. Perhaps they both get a kick out of offering their equally ridiculous points of view and then leaving the stage each thinking they have won the "Debate"?

Dear Wendi Gain Allen,
What a loving and thoughtful daughter you are.

I am a so-called "white man" who spent a day and 1/2 and at least one night on the streets of Selma, Alabama. With Dr. King, Jesse Jackson, comedian Dick Gregory and his wife, Lil, and two little children, and at least four "white" nuns, we braced for another onslaught vowing to remain non-violent. The white racists didn't have the last word in Selma. Your mother's commitment and witness was important.
Now a 72 year-old retired UMC clergyman, I marched in Chicago and spent our last $ 25.00 to send me by train to that great nation-changing March on Washington in 1963. (We didn't want it to be a failure!) Many, if not most, SCLC-sponsored demonstrations were "integrated," black and white together.
Had not all of us risked our lives ( and a number of martyrs, including Dr. King, gave and lost theirs, let us remember) citizen rights for all citizens would be a 144 year old promise, instead of a 1964-1965 reality that led to many other important changes, freeing Americans of all ethnic groups in 2008 to elect Barak Obama as President of the USA.
I was an "atheist" before my conversion experience. Most principled atheists love and honor truth and honesty and show courage in standing up for their convictions. Most have higher ethical standards than average, and many are responsible, compassionate, and kind. People can't force themselves to believe what they don't. Those who try to shame honesty or shun honest persons are ignorant and mis-guided, to say the least. The God of all truth leads us all from truth to truth until we find enough light to live by. Religious Liberty means, in part, no conscience should be coerced or forced to support others' belief systems or enterprises.
I'd love to send Gwen Gain my reflections on the Meaning of the Presidential Inauguration of 2009 (she's in there!), and I'd be honored to correspond with someone who knew the essential meanings of America back in the 1960's when freedoms and rights, denied for 100 years, were peaceably fought for and finally won for all, thanks in part to a relatively small, brave minority of citizens, black and white.

i just think that all the republicans are just sitting around waiting for president obama to fail maybe all the things that are in the stimulus package are not going to work but they are not giving it a chance we as americans need hope right now that is all we have and what really boggles my mind is for the longest time black men have been held down and humiliated and now we have a black man in charged of our country and the only reason they wont pass that stimulus bill is because they still want to hold down and humiliate a black man i think they ought to be ashamed of theirselves and let this bill pass so we can gety this economy back on track as fast as we can the republicans dont care they have a job money in the bank a roof over there head

Betty Bush   February 13th, 2009 9:48 am ET

I used to enjoy watching Bill and thought he was really funny but his current continuous sniping at The Republicans has become BORING, VERY BORING. I didnt even finish watching the show last night..
Both parties have their share of BOOBs, so even up your critcism
You are starting to sound like Rosie O'Donnell. and those other goofy women from The View
And just because you say the stimulus bill is nor PORK doesnt mean it isnt. I think there is plenty of pork in it.

Jon Kissel   February 13th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Bill- how about a Kellog's boycott? I will do my part and not wake and bake with Corn Flakes anymore....

Doug   February 13th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

Bill Maher is just another one of the "infalable people". If you don't think exactly the way he thinks, you are an idiot, you "just don't get it" as he said about the Republicans. Bill Maher continues to attach Republicans that don't agree with him as foolish, idiots and out of touch. This kind of thinking is exactly why politics has become so devisive. If he were smarter, he would realize that there are thinking, intelligent people that differ from his point of view.

He doesn't help to help build bridges.

Susan - Canada   February 13th, 2009 2:54 pm ET

I love it when you have Bill Maher on your show. It's great how he says it "like it is". He's not afraid to state his opinion on anything and you just know that he means what he says. Wish you had him on more often!

Boyd Waechter   February 13th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

What do you continue to give Bill Maher a place to voice his leftist rhetoric? He is so disrespectful to just about everyone he discusses and talks about and Larry King seems to eat it up to increase his ratings. Larry King and Bil Maher represented the worst in our society.

Phil Craven   February 13th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Bill Maher said there was no PORK in the stimulus bill last night. Did he read it because most of the house didn't.

Mathew Owens   February 13th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

Yeah so great how Bill Maher shares his religous beliefs...

kinda curious on Darwin thou, wonder what creative process he used to develope his theory of evolution.

Seems Bill Maher movies has some creative problems in logestics as it trys to evolve a creative outlet. seems he offended so many with his views, they are useing they're creative process not to view it. Maybe Bill Maher can create a way to evolve a way of comunication, so some of us idiots won't find him so unevolved.

yes it seems some do need to stick another joint in there brain maybe that'll fix it.Any ways off to the store for another box of Kelloggs Wheaties, Maybe I'll share another pop tart with friend later...
PS Hi Larry love your show, let'em be all they can be, never stone a friend for that truely makes you KING,

DeeAnn   February 13th, 2009 5:18 pm ET

You let Bill Maher spew his disgusting point of view and you seem to like it. President Bush did not commit crimes...but Bernie Maddoff did, didn't he? I didn't hear Bill say anything about Maddoff's crimes.

Ronda   February 13th, 2009 7:01 pm ET

Bill Mahr should educate himself before he speaks. The stimulus bill DOES indeed have PORK – what does he have to say about the 30 MILLION for PELOSI'S PET MICE PROJECT????????????

Dodie from Irvine CA   February 13th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

Good Evening Larry and Bill!

Why do we need to continue giving the banks billions of dollars and then get angry because they spend it inappropriately?

Why not FEDERALIZE all banks that want large handouts???

Did you know that China just lowered interest rates for everyone in China in order to stimulate their economy? No refinancing … just lowered all rates. I think that is a GREAT idea! By the way, Citi-Bank has banks in Beijing and Shanghai. I understand they also lowered their rates in order to keep their business. What do you think?

As for the picture of Michael Phelps: anyone that uses a bong knows that if there is no smoke in the chamber, he is not smoking. and if he was smoking, GOOD FOR HIM! legal drugs, i.e. pharmaceuticals and alcohol, kill more people daily than marijuana.
i believe that marijuana should be legal and imported like other produce. or grown here. either way it would make the government a lot of money and save billions at the same time!!

I read in the St Paul, Minnesota paper that there will be no checks issued to the people this year as part of the stimulus package. That is will be a tax deduction in 2009 and 2010. What were they thinking. People need money now. What would you say about this?

Matt   February 15th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

What kind of idiot is Bill Maher!? He starts the show by first asking a "rhetorical" question phased as "how many moderate republicans are there" as he intends the answer to be "zero". King responds by stating "three that we know of". Must you continue to be proven wrong Maher? Why don't we talk about the real issues responsible for the demise of my country – like ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION!? The illegals do not contribute to our economy, and as fact leech off our government through wellfare plans. Not to mention they occupy what could be American Citizen's jobs. Let's see if you'll put this real issue up on your show, King.

Hi Bill and Larry,
I love both of you.
Bill, do you know that Plavix is the commercial they are showing inbetween your segments?
I love that you are a proponent of eating right and that you can't control this, but what do you think about this?
Do you know if "pot" has any adverse effects?
Don't you think we should have some non-judgmental studies on the effects of pot?
I mean from what I know, pot has minimal adverse effects, but wouldn't it be nice to have concrete evidence about its positive and negative effects.
Just wondering......

Edwards was not just a guy who got horny as Bill describes him. I think Elizabeth did ignore the truth but he was much worse than just some average guy. He had his friend and advisor take the fall for him, even though this would put the other guy.s family at risk. Also, he had fantasies of when his wife would pass and he could be with this woman. Promising things to her as if they were dating. How completely unreal. Who knows how far he would have gone.

Although I am happy with some of the accomplishments of our president I am a little worried about how skittish the administration appears to be from time to time. On the other hand, I do not feel like America is ready to actually see a Black man's wrath – righteous or not. Bill do you feel that our president is in a "damned if you do or damned if you don't situation"?

Bill: The Army is the wrong tool to use to fight terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Larry: How do you defeat terrorism?

Bill: You don't. It's like crime.

Larry: Violent crime is down in America.

Bill: And we've made terrorism go down.
