Obama says no regrets over ground zero Islamic center comments

Posted: 01:36 PM ET

Columbus, Ohio (CNN) - President Obama said Wednesday that he has "no regrets" about his comments last week supporting the rights of Muslims to build an Islamic center and mosque two blocks from the site of the September 11 terror attacks in New York.

"The answer is no regrets," Obama said when asked about bringing up the issue Friday at a White House dinner commemorating the start of Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

At the dinner, Obama said that those wanting to build the Islamic center and mosque have the constitutional right to religious freedom. On Saturday, he clarified that he was talking only about the right to build the center and not the "wisdom" of doing so close to "ground zero," where more than 2,700 people died when planes hijacked by terrorists slammed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

The remarks sparked a national debate on the emotional issue, with many Republicans condemning the president as insensitive to families of victims and out of touch with the views of most Americans.

He should have no regrets. He said nothing wrong. These people have a constitutional right to have a mosque near ground zero. What is he supposed to do, turn his back on the constitution of the United States. I don't care who you are, I am not going to turn my back on the constitution for anyone. If you don't like the constitution then change it, but there is no getting around the fact that this is their right. The builders should consult with the families of the victims and the survivors, but I could care less what the people NY think. What kind of country are we turning in to? You can't take away that right, period.

David Kaas   August 18th, 2010 1:53 pm ET

Absolutely, positively NO!
However in the second half of September 2015 the center of this planet will do a 180 degree flip which will result in North America and South America rotating East-West on the equatorial line. New York, as well as California will see 1000 foot waves on that special day of readjustment in September of 2015, to be followed by a seven year drought. Better prepare for that one now!

mariam   August 18th, 2010 3:59 pm ET

Finally America has a decent president.
Kudos to you President Obama for supporting people of all faiths. You are a great leader and wish other leaders would learn from your wisdom.
Your respect will improve foreign relations with all countries and build more bridges between east and west.
Not only are you a great president but you seem to be a great husband and father and the whole world admires that. Well done on your first term.

Smith in Oregon   August 18th, 2010 5:43 pm ET

The Poll is rigged. While many would be opposed to a huge Mosque Dome and Minaret's calling the Muslim faithful over loudspeakers to pray, that is not what is being proposed in a old run-down building some two blocks from the twin towers location.

The proposed building is a COMMUNITY CENTER which includes a prayer room which could be used for Muslims as well as visitors.

This old run-down building is not some 'Mosque' with Minaret and Domes which the Faux news network has been spewing out to divide, confuse and mislead the America people.

This old run-down building is TWO CITY BLOCKs from the Twin Towers site. Next to a Strip-Bar and a Burger King. Are the Faux news network thinking the Strip-Bar is also on 'sacred ground'? Of course not, they don't want you to know it is simply a community center located in a old-building next to a Strip-Bar and a Burger King.

Lucy   August 18th, 2010 6:12 pm ET

I thoroughly agree with President Obama's statement.

I wish more politicians would be leaders. Talk to the country about what is right rather than say what will appeal to voters. And, sometimes there's a huge gulf between what is right and what the public wants. And, the gulf gets wider when demagogues/fear mongers step in and fan the flames of fear and intolerance.

Cajazz76:24:8   August 18th, 2010 6:29 pm ET

It should be self-evident that those who oppose the CORDOBA CENTER being built are insecure and extremely ignorant of history, religion, and the roots attached to their ancestors. I suggest anyone opposing its construction get a DNA profile on themselves and go back to school and learn that your nebulous assertions have clarity between the pages of history..that is considerably recent, as well as, ancient.

IKHAN   August 18th, 2010 6:37 pm ET

Hi Larry,

A president who is striving to bring sanity in an acrid atmosphere of hate & intolerance deserves all support.
Its important that sanity prevails & the spirit of America & its Constitution triumphs over those forces trying to destroy this society.
Hate, intolerance, religious persecution bordering on Fascism & racism are scourges to be fought at every level.
The proposed Community Center which would have a swimming pool, auditorium, restaurants in lower Manhattan, not on Ground Zero as is being falsely reported by propagandists, this project would be good for rebuilding lower Manhattan

Carly Baker   August 18th, 2010 6:47 pm ET

Obama did the wrong thing again.........as the leader of this country, he needs to be more in touch with the sentament of the PEOPLE. He does more to divide the nations that anyone before him. He is all in it for himself......period. He truly believes he knows what is best for all of us and that we are stupid. He is the first president in my lifetime that is a complete embarrassment.

Joe G. (Illinois)   August 18th, 2010 8:09 pm ET

Even the devil himself does everything by the book..
As not even he himself can take possession of your mind, body and soul against your will.

But way all such commotion?
Did not anybody pay attention to his public stance on abortion? You know people get locked up in jail and or mental institutions for torturing and killing helpless animals in this US of A.
But in regards to innocent children in the womb..

art   August 18th, 2010 8:45 pm ET

I disagree with the observation that Obama has done more to divide the nations than anyone before him. He has challenged us to more closely examine what it means to be human as the challenges to being human mount. It's no longer about divide and conquer. It's about loving your fellow man, whoever they may be. He understands that the One, has become the many.

And...isn't it beautiful to see our troops pulling out of Iraq?

-peace

Scott Stodden   August 18th, 2010 9:16 pm ET

President Obama Is Wrong, Wrong, Wrong To Be In Support Of This Mosque Being Built! Thousands Of Innocent Americans Lost There Lives Due To Islamic Extremists! Nobody Is Saying Don't Build It But Why So Close To Ground Zero? If Obama Keeps Supporting This Issue I Will Not Be Voting For Him In 2012!

Scott Stodden (Freeport,Illinois)

Rosaline   August 18th, 2010 9:34 pm ET

I am an 87 year old woman, born in the USA. I am a lifelong Democrat, but if Pres. Obama lets this Mosque be built, I am leaving the Democratic party. I feel so strongly about this.

Maxine Manners   August 18th, 2010 9:51 pm ET

Why the hypocracy? Most people agree that Dr. Laura had the right to use the N word, but that it was in bad taste and she is giving up her show because of it. The same should apply to the builders of the Mosque. The builders have the right but because it is in bad taste to build it near ground Zero, they should give up the idea just as Dr. Laura is giving up her show. Buy the way, who sold the Muslims the property to build the Mosque on??

Sergio   August 18th, 2010 9:55 pm ET

I'm confused... why is people talking about the president... is the job of the president to decide if a building can be built or not? Can he legally block any building from being built in the USA? Shouldn't this be the job of the Mayor or Governor?

Danny   August 18th, 2010 9:55 pm ET

For all Americans and for the WORLD, our politicians should demand that Obama say which Muslim wisdom comment he chooses to withhold about Muslims pushing to build a 911 mosque & center next to 911 attack.

The WORLD knows the comment he withholds can fall under only 3 categories of wisdom. 1. Dumb Muslim wisdom 2. I don't care about Muslim wisdom 3. Praise be to Allah wisdom. So which is it President Obama? A simple question with a simple, yet brave answer, no matter which one it is. So please push our State Reps to find out. To keep our Presidents bravery badge shining.

Consider that gays & lesbians bravely come out of the closet, then joyfully and bravely come out to vote for Obama. So why can't Obama bravely come out on a much less important issue, the wisdom of the Muslim desire for a 911 mosque next to 911 attack?

Obama's no comment simply put him in between a rock and a hard spot. And doing that is a sign of weakness, as the WORLD watches. He needs to get out of that weak spot by coming out.

Obama too often forgets the WORLD watches as he belittles Americans and our ideas & concerns that even remotely have Republican values. Even if it's good for Democrats. I think the WORLD is getting enough, too. The second shoe that Democrats don't want to hear drop.

Marty   August 18th, 2010 9:57 pm ET

If the Muslim community, through their Mosques, condemned the actions of the Muslim "extremists," then non-Muslim Americans would have an easier time accepting their fellow citizens. However, the Muslim community is almost entirely silent on this issue.

Arleen   August 18th, 2010 10:03 pm ET

Dear Rosaline, Iam a 70 year old women and a lifelong democrat. I always thought we stood for compassion and inclusiveness. I really and truly do not understand your hostilitiy? I do get the politicians using this situation to their "advantage". I do not get your position. I hope you are watching and will respond and that this blog will allow me to hear your argument. Thank you.

hey larry,
a great number of catholic priest have been accused and found guilty of child molestation yet no one has vociferously oppose the catholic church of having catholic schools or churches near schools. why is Islam being victimized because of a few radicals who happen to be Muslim. to me thats double standard.

Ground Zero Mosque: Do Muslims Reciprocate Christians' ('foolish') Tolerance at all?

Whenever Christians magnanimously allow Muslims to build their expansionist mosque in strategic location of the West, Muslims don’t consider such magnanimity of Christians as exemplary tolerance. They consider it as POWERS OF ALLAH who, they believe, makes kufrs (infidels) stupid. So, if any Westerner thinks that by allowing Muslims to express their propaganda presence at vintage locations of the West will make them emulate such tolerance he is being stupid. Even if American politicians allow Muslims to demolish the Capitol Hill and build a giant mosque there, they will NEVER stop killing Americans nor allow Christians build Churches in Arabo-Islamic cities. There believe is that Allah will always make “infidels” stupid to the advantage of Islam--but they seem to be right. Don’t they?

IKHAN   August 18th, 2010 10:14 pm ET

Hi Larry,
It was the Bush presidency during which we saw the nation divided on many issues besides Iraq war.
@Scott Stodden
perhaps it would come as news to you that American Muslims were among those who died in that attack. And that tens upon tens of thousands of them have died as an aftermath when we invaded Iraq. Innocent Moslems are dying in Afghanistan & Pakistan fighting alongside us.
It would also come as news to you that a surprising number of Americans in the military, law enforcement, first responders of 9/11, aviators, architects & engineersdo not believe for a moment that the Twin Towers were brought down imploding by those two aircraft.
In fact about 1200 of these professional led by Richard Gage of California are trying to petition the Congress to re-open the invesigations into 9/11 attacks.
We do not to this day know who destroyed the buildings.

Elaine   August 18th, 2010 10:16 pm ET

PLEASE BE SENSITIVE NOT Politically correct. Victims are real people -those lost and those still too shattered to have wounds reopen or further pain inflicted- it is not cowardice, Gov. Patterson is correct- sensitivity over rights is common sense and peaceseeking. Not just Americans lost loved ones, not just religious believers, and even Muslims -can you foster tolerance by hurting your fellow brothers, citizens and the global community.

Barbara Kalb   August 18th, 2010 10:17 pm ET

Larry: I think that a mosque can be built near ground zero when the christians are allowed to return to prayer in the school and sporting events, and when nativity scenes are allowed in malls. This country was founded on christianity and it seems that all other religions are being allowed to express themselves because this is the land of the free, but the christians are not allowed to continue to express in God we trust because it is considered insensitive to other religions. 68% of the people are opposed to building this mosque so close to ground zero. What happened to the majority rules?

Gerald Jolly   August 18th, 2010 10:20 pm ET

LacrosseMom(the real one)   August 18th, 2010 10:29 pm ET

I am correcting CNN for their misleading headline. The Mosque WILL NOT be built ON Ground Zero. But TWO CITY BLOCKS AWAY.

Again, I quote Elie Wiesel, holocaust survivor & human rights activist:

"No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior. All collective judgments are wrong. Only racists make them."

The President of the United States swore to protect and uphold the U.S. Constitution, he spoke courageously on behalf of FREEDOM. People sadly, are living in fear of Muslims. There are billions of Muslims in the World, we can not judge them all, because of the sins of the few!

Irene Marshall   August 18th, 2010 11:12 pm ET

For those who are concerned about the sensitivities of those who lost loved ones in 9/11.... why is Ground Zero still in the state it is? There is no memorial, no park, no places of worship, or other ways to respect what happened. Why is there no consensus after 9 years? It is appalling that the government, people and organizations that are involved cannot find a way to create a beautiful and respectful memorial. I can only assume that it will be in the same disgraceful state on the 10th anniversary.

I work for airport security and I think they need to run the news footage from that day, because everyone forgets the toll it took on americans. I believe that all these other countries get to have their beliefs and religious statues displayed in their countries, but we always have to conform for everyone...what is an american? I no longer know .I understand we are a melting pot, but would they build a church in Iraq where Sadaams statue was torn down or next door to their mosque. Ground zero, yes it affected all walks and races of life, but let us(americans) have a place to call our own, and reflect on our loved ones. I would hate to be crying over a loved one and look up and see an islamic symbol..... I would never visit that area, if that happens, we are more vulnerable and they have one...what a slap in the face!

Shannon   August 19th, 2010 12:40 am ET

Muslims build a Mosque to celebrate a victory. The building of this Mosque the closet to ground zero that they can is not a coincidence. I live in Atlanta and Muslim's celebrate Islam on Sept. 12 at our local theme park (Six Flags). Hum, why did they pick Sept. 12????

cynthia   August 19th, 2010 12:42 am ET

Totally agree with President Obama! "We the People" Equal! Some politicans invest so much time spreading fear, that no one notices the real issues r not being addressed. We,re talking about "terror babies" one week & this week "mosque a slap in the face for 9/11 victims?" What is this country going to look like if we continue to let ignorant people dictate society? We need unity. Not division! I'm proud that we have a president that stands up for what's right.for this nation!for this world! We, as a country, could be striving, working towards a positive purpose. Yet instead this is what we put our energy into. Democrats in 2010!! If republicans get enough seats, they will screw us ALL over! AGAIN! Don't 4get the Bush yrs America!! Keep that American spirit & let's me great again!

tasha   August 19th, 2010 12:47 am ET

THATS ENOUGH BENDING. and please stop comparing religion to GAY everytime its a debate that is not a race or religion, ..... THE TERM GAY IS A GROUP OF PERVERSE UNGODLY INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE CREATED A LIFESTYLE THAT IS AGAINST EVERY RELIGIOUS FAITH!! SO PLEASE STOP COMPARING THAT DISGUSTING LIFESTYLE TO , RELIGIONS , TO THE AFRICAN AMERICAN STRUGGLE, ITS NOT ITS JUST A GROUP OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PERVERSE SEXUAL OPINION. GOD has nothing to do with it!!! Being gay is just about sex and that is what also needs to be stopped allowing them to confuse and raise children in a same sex household and worst with 2 men, those poor kids aren't pets they truly dont have a chance to form an opinion, its so unfair this world is severely out of control!!! God bless us that Revelations hasn't came to pass...YET!!!!

A lot of people are uptight and angered by the ' alleged mosque"
mother of evil spawn by the Muslims and the pants of fire lies
that the Muslims are wanting and eager to annex the U.S.
Little or hardly known is the fact that China just became the
number Two(2) world power and that China is not interested
in building a mosque in U.S. soil -China wants to buy all the
viable real estate availbale for sale in the United States.
China don't want to build -they buy the building that are already
built.. China even wanted to buy the Port Authority bjuilding ,
the Port of Tampa and the Panama Canal. If you we don't
watch it China will buy the Brooklyn Bridge, Route 80, Route 10,
Route 75, Route 66 and U.S. 95. It may even buy the major
U.S. airports. And it may already have rights to all these
properties. We owe China a great deal and we may have to
borrow more to pay for the war in Afghanistan and for
the BP oil disaster.
If you are concern is the " stupid mosque" then you are
more stupid that what I thought to think that our number
one priority is to live in the past while China, Russia and
Iran steal our future.

We do not have a party in Washington that is trustworthy. That was tossed out with the bathwater and wads of money stuffed in all their pockets. Change can only happen outside of the system. If you look to a party or anyone in Washington to protect you....think again! Corruption is everywhere. Congress and the group that is really in charge in Washington is sucking us dry. End of story!

Hi all,
I think that bush put America in a bad position globally as he invaded Iraq for no reason and then Afghanistan. I think that America will be a great nation once again under the leadership of President Obama. He has fixed foreign policy. He also has bought the innocent young men home and I pray for their families. He has also showed tolerance to people of all faiths. Bush's Administration made a lot of mistakes and you all know that and brought the country to economic mayhem. Now unfortunately, its Obamas job to pick up the pieces and fix what has been damaged. I also applaud president Bill Clinton for his very democratic leadership. America needs people like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Presidents who have strong wisdom and plan long term rather than short term planning.

Susan Bernal   August 19th, 2010 5:30 am ET

Really i don't buy the idea of a mosque to built .

Irshard   August 19th, 2010 5:47 am ET

Two parties two views .Those opposing need to realize that the plan is within the American laws .
Secondly ,As per Sharia there is also a view that if by doing a deed and if it is to cause trouble among the people ,The learned could avoid doing such a deed .Specially in a non Muslim Country .

lostemperor   August 19th, 2010 8:06 am ET

For those who think Islam is a violent religion, it is nothing compared to what Christians did for centuries!

Just look at the last century alone. We killed millions colonizising and enslaving people and nations. Then six million Jews were murdered in thee heart of Christian Europe. We killed 2.5 million Vietnamese. Bombing the country flat. All for the sake of our superior Christian principles! Now we invade Afghanistan and Iraq. Just because a small group of Muslim radicals, Al Qeada, attacked us. For every civilian of us killed we kill 100 of them. And this happened all thoughout history! Which country have invade other countries? We are almost always the invaders/aggressors!

It is probably the same hypocrites conservatives, with one hand on the bible and one on the trigger, who are shocked about a mosque being build near geound zero. I would be shocked if they build a church in such a sacred place!!

Gail   August 19th, 2010 8:42 am ET

There are so many reasons not to build the mosque in the area of world trade center, but the most prevalent one is the rights of the survivors of 9/11. Everyone is talking a bout the legal rights to build there but what about the legal and emotional rights of the survivors. Shouldn’t the builders take into account the needs of the community?

Gerald Jolly   August 19th, 2010 1:26 pm ET

12% Dont care either way

20%' mostly Muslims, are in favor of building the mosque

I think that supercedes any and all objections PRO& CON

I dont want to question President Obama's decision or comments on the mattter "BUT"

The buzz now is.

Given that he was born into the Islamic faith and his father was a devout Muslim.

Could it be that there are some lingering feelings towards the Muslim faith.

You decide, I have already decided.

Irene M   August 19th, 2010 5:32 pm ET

This is a direct request for Larry King. Ask some of your guests who are concerned about 9/11 families and victims – why does it seem as if nothing is happening with Ground Zero? Is there lack of consensus on what to do? Funding problems? Overlapping territorial problems between agencies? I would really like to have at least one guest be invited who can actually talk about what has happened over the past 9 years and what are future plans. One time I saw some architectural drawings, but I have no idea what happened. What is going on behind the scenes? Maybe discussion on Larry's show can provide a spotlight and actually help make something positive happen. What is the hold up? Maybe if something had been done since 9/11 to create a proper memorial – , there might not be so much controversy about the mosque. Thanks.

Patricia Reynolds   August 19th, 2010 6:30 pm ET

Why don't we just vote on it as America? Elections are coming up and we can just include this issue for the Voters to decide by majority, or out of decency, donate the land and make it a place for every belief. There are many solutions for such a heated issue. Why add fuel to the fire?

Jessie from Auckland, NZ   August 19th, 2010 6:42 pm ET

@mariam August 19th, 2010 4:40 am ET

Well said and always like your comments.

Judy   August 19th, 2010 7:40 pm ET

President Obama should not have voiced his opinion on the proposed Mosque near Ground Zero, period. Whats done is done.

As the saying goes "fool me once, shame on you" (Pearl Harbor), "fool me twice shame on me" ( Sept 11 )

We are debating ...this because we do not want to look like idiots to the rest of the world should their be another attack. "How come no one was watching the store"

Every LEGAL AMERICAN has their right however, where does RESPECT and HONOR come in? It is as if "who cares 3,000+ people died in 9/11 plus countless FIRST RESPONDERS who are not able to get the health care they DESERVE. Whats done is done and we move on ? yes however, we need to RESPECT and HONOR our fallen AMERICAN brothers (and sisters) ALWAYS AND FOREVER.

In this situation, there are those individuals who are worried about "their rights" and not about the rights of those who gave their lives for THIS COUNTRY. The developers of the Mosque are stating "how dare you challenge my choice of location?" We have a right to CHALLENGE everything dealing with our SAFETY.

If you are in AMERICA and want to stay, HONOR OUR FALLEN AMERICAN HEROES AND THOSE WHO SERVE TODAY so we can ALL have the freedoms our ancestors have fought so hard for all these years.

IKHAN   August 19th, 2010 8:14 pm ET

Hi Larry,
if polls mostly manufactured, were the criterion for the 'majority rules' then the Iraq war would have been wound up not long after we invaded Iraq & Bush & company would be standing trial.
As for 18% of Americans taking the President to be Muslim, big deal & so what?
His Chief of Staff is a Jew & from the Israeli army. His latest nomination to the Supreme Court is a Jewish lady. And so are many in his administration , even a Hindu or two.
So where do we see these lingering feelings towards Muslim religion. The dinner that the President hosted for Muslim ambassadors is a White House tradition during the Muslim month of Ramadhan started by President Bush.
The Imam leading the lower Manhattan project of Islamic Community center is a well known inter-faith advocate who worked closely with the Bush administration.
This is a community center and has to be built in that very community as a part of rebuilding lower Manhattan.

James   August 19th, 2010 8:44 pm ET

Any one of us can have his/her opinion on the mosque controversy. Obviously those in favor of the construction location will support President Obama's comment. The problem that President Obama has is that regardless of our individual opinions, he doesn't seem to care what the majority of Americans think. And while some just point at Republicans for stirring up any and every controversy, 2/3 of the population obviously represents many more than the Republicans. It may be that he feels he needs to give his opinion regardless of what others think. He can do so. However, there is nothing in life that doesn't have a price tag.

I feel the Muslims are entitled to freedom to worship as they please and where they please. However, I think they are also entitled if you will to the responsibility to show some sensitivity in their decision making. If the majority of Americans are opposed to the site, then perhaps build the mosque elsewhere. Most are not opposing the Muslims (other than the terrorists); they are opposing the location of the mosque. Both they and President Obama need to be cognizant of the opinion of the majority.

Brenda   August 19th, 2010 9:11 pm ET

You wonder why more people now believe Obama is a Muslim? I don't think he is, but a Christian is to witness of Christ and spread the Word. He spends all his time "witnessing" of the goodness of the Islamic faith and very rarely mentions Christianity and never mentions Christ. The entire Christian religion is based of Jesus Christ being the only way to salvation. Who is he witnessing for?

Congress shall assert by law the establishment of a single religion, and prohibit the free exercise of all others, and abridge the freedom of speech, and that of the press, and the right of people to assemble, except the Omnipotent Conservative Christian extremists, and only they can petition the Government, of their making, for a redress of grievances, and quell any and all in opposition to their destruction of this nation...under their Indolent and Obedient God..that reverently serves them....

Right on target. We had better watch out... you turn the US over; it will have 'made in China' stamped on it!

Thanks Jessie
I also like to read your comments about this issue. They are real.

No...I do not think they should build an islamic mosque anywhere near ground zero. The moslims only want that mosque there, so it can become a "shinning shrine to islam" for all the world to see!

Kind of like the tower of babel. When our forfathers started this country, all we had was Judao-Christain religions, but now we have, islam, buda, hindu, etc, ect. type religions all with the right to worsip as they see fit. I don;t think our forfathers had that in mind when America was formed! The more defferent our religions are, the more conflicts & war we will have!

President Obama is a caring man and he did not say anything wrong. He told the truth and we sohuld respect all religions even if we don't agree with them personally. I understand that building the mosque will be difficult for some people because of the sensitivity of the losses and in this case, I say they should find another location but this in no way states any form of discrimination but rather respect. I am blessed that my family members made it out the twin towers alive but what about those lives that were lost and their families are reminded each and every day? It will just be too close for comfort

In a nutshell the american public since the Obama administration have tried to find faults in the president. He's done his best picking up the pieces after the bush typhoon and the economy is getting better. He's a great father and good husband. I think thats someone you can trust.

Perhaps the people that are building the center should make a gesture to those victims of the 9-11 attacks and their families. Build a small monument at the center that says that Islam is a religion of peace and specifically states that those that perpetrate such acts are not muslim but rather enemies of Islam. Have a book at the monument that has all the names of the victims of the attack including those that are Jewish.

Having a book at that center dedicated to people of other religions especially those that are Jewish would be a huge gesture. It would help people trust.

If those that are building the center are unwilling to something like that, then explain to me why the world should trust them. Those that are building the center need to show that Islam is truly a religion of peace and show that they are truly sad and understand the sensitivity of the issue and offer something tangible.

Islamaphobia is about a lack of trust. Show the world that they can trust by condemning those acts and honor those that lost their lives even if they are a different religion.

It needs to be more than words though!
