Monday night – LKL 2-hr telethon to help the Gulf coast

I missed this show, and I am curious why BP isn't paying for everything? For example, cleaning up oil off the birds and wildlife. Or lost wages/profits/health/etc. I can understand helping Haiti after an earthquake that devestates their country, but paying for BP's damages? Doesn't that reduce BP's liability? It would be helpful if someone could explain this one more in depth. BP isn't backing out on this now, is it?

Kudo's again to Larry King and his wonderful CNN Staff for helping raise awareness of such environmental and human disasters.

However beyond being unable to save a very large percentage of the dead and dying aquatic life, sea life, mammals and birds that have been exposed to the Hundreds of Millions of gallons of poisonous, toxic and carcinogenic crude Oil, this drill and spill cycle MUST be broken or it is merely repeated faster than the 75 Years it takes for adequate degradation and absorption of the previous Oil spill.

What I sincerely recommend Larry King is to focus and generate an American awareness and telethon on Alternative Energy focusing entirely on Non-Fossil Fuels.

Or we can continue this sad, disheartening and extremely expensive Oil and Coal accidents powering America's energy.

If one oil well leak can do this much damage, what would happen if they all started leaking? I guess we could torch the entire ocean!

I say clean up the mess and then bill BP. We are wasting time! Animals are dying and the environment is being destroyed. People and their money is what got us here. Lets not let this be what makes the situation worse.
I understand that people's livelihoods are being disrupted and I'm sorry for them. But none of it will matter once the wildlife is destroyed in that region. The payouts are a temporary fix to their problem. BP's money will run out. At that point, the people will look to Obama to take tax money to pay them out.
The government is willing to put all of our money into a war (one that will never end, mind you), but prefer not to put out to the cleanup. I just don't get it.

How about a piece on how to pressure Congress and President Obama to force BP to clean up their own mess.. ??

I am growing increasingly angry about this situation with BP, The gulf coast of FL has been hit extremely hard by the recession, I live in the Sarasota area where we have unemployment that is over 14% in many communities. We were starting to see things get a little better down here before this spill. What is BP going to do to help these communities? I personally know of 5 families that have changed thier vacation plans, now not coming to the coast because of the spill. We depend on tourism. I hear that they are paying claims to small businesses but what about the people that those small businesses employed, or would have employed, I am unemployed and have been for 2 years, there is no longer unemployment benfits for me. I can not find work, I believe partially based on this situation with BP. This part of the country is ailing and needs help!!!

Will the media please STOP referring to this disaster as a "spill"? How utterly disgusting and an insult to our collective intelligence!

People on the Coast want to work, not recieve assistance. It seems to me that the states involved and the Federal Government could give tax credits or at least tax deduction for money spent in the affected areas. Tax credits always stimulate spending. Also, people planning to travel to the areas could apply for a debit cards that could be loaded with $100 from the fund and could only be used in the disaster area zipcodes. Wouldn't this be an allowable use of the $20 Billion fund.

Interesting information. It seems the fundraising is based on the idea that right now enough is not being done to clean up/remedy the mess that our oil-hungry tastes have made. BP supposedly is paying for everything–but there are some on here that seem to be saying that they aren't paying quick enough. And because BP is too slow, people/wildlife/environment are suffering. This seems like the fundamental problem here in regard to clean-up and fundraising–aren't we actually saying BP is not moving quick enough, has not mobilized enough resources, and is basically not responsive enough? And now we have to do fundraising and volunteer work to supplement it and make up for where BP is lacking? Fundraising and volunteer work that BP will never pay back.

Sadly, we as Americans let this happen. We close our eyes to environmental problems caused by corporations in other countries all the time–the unseen costs of things we want–and finally it happened in our backyard. Our thirst for more and more for the sake of more and more, and our failure to hold companies and others responsible for their actions (for example, creating plans to respond to oil well leakage before we allow drilling) has caught up to us.

So I'm certainly not opposed to helping out with the clean-up as much as possible, since we the citizens were, and still are, asleep at the wheel. And we should always step up and help our fellow man. But let's not beat around the bush then and pretend BP couldn't do more–they could. They could hire lots more contractors to do the work that volunteers are doing. BP could hire the current volunteers as contractors. BP could transfer money to United Way and others to pay for the losses. They could hire more people and companies to come and clean up wildlife and birds. Instead of yachting, they could be working extra hours to find more people willing to get paid to clean up the mess.

BP could make their top corporate officers move down to Louisiana and live there in the midst of everything and see the devastation every day. Kind of hard to go yachting when you know the consequences of your actions and are reminded of it every day. Those people in the Gulf won't be enjoying yachting any time soon.

If I donate money to this cause, how do I know it will reach the people that actually need the money? I know for a fact that when all the billions of dollars were raised after 9/11 that United Way sat on the money as long as they could while reaping the interest money. Not all of the money went to help victims of 9/11, some of it was put into the general funds of United Way.

United Way is a large contributor to Planned Parenthood which promotes abortion.

So, money that was given by sincere people to help the victims of 9/11 ended up financing abortion.

I see this telethon as another way to take advantage of the kind hearted people of America while celebrities tuck feathers in their caps for promoting the telethon.

I'll donate directly to the Salvation Army which has a proven track record of actually getting the funds to people that have a ligitimate need.

I am not without concern for the plight of the people or the animals caused by the B P oil disaster.

But really folks.

Did'nt the President as well as the B P spokesman tell us that any and all financial costs resulting from this tragedy will be covered entirely by B. P.

Aren't we Americans put upon beyond our own ability to meet our own basic needs for life already.

We have donated 100's of millions to the Haiti charities already.

We are taxed billions of dollars every month to finance two wars we should'nt be involved in.

When will the ultra rich going to understand that we simply have nothing more to give.

As a resident of Gulf Shores, which has been one of the most effected areas, I can tell you that even though BP is supposed to pay, they have years to raise the 20 billion, and so far, business owners here have been paid a single $5000 check for their losses. This is supposed to cover the losses from April to July. These are businesses that were making a couple thousand a DAY. That $5000 check will not go very far. I agree that BP should pay all of it, but someone has to force them to pay certain amounts to certain people by a certain time. Until our government steps up and spells out exactly what is expected of them, BP will just pay what they want, when they want.

Enough with the whining of people who keep saying they have nothing left to give. I'm in Canada, and I will give what I can because I support the environment world wide because we are all connected. I have visited the gulf during travels. Now seeing images of dead wildlife, oiled birds, oil soaked marshes reaches out to me. By the time BP does anything of value everything will be dead. Yes they are accountable but they aren't doing what is needed and neither is the gov't. So rather than sit back and fiddle 'while Rome burns' forgo your morning latte and chip in $5 – if everyone did that – then perhaps more action in rescuing those that still can be and getting equipment to clean up some of those areas can start taking place. With up to 100 million barrels a day leaking out of this thing it is high time someone take action. There are no skimmers – nothing along the shores to prevent this entire area from becoming a dead zone. This is ONE world and we are all a part of it. Give a buck, give two bucks – but do something.

BP will back out of anything it can back out of. Unfortunately, we can't just let them take care of everything, for the sake of the animals and people. Look at it this way: if you came upon a person who had just been attacked, would you help them or insist that the attacker pick them up and carry them to the hospital? BP has attacked the gulf and is going to do as little about it as they can get away with. We need to be the good Samaritans and help out.

I agree with Christine. I work in animal rescue and they should not be the ones to suffer because you feel that you have a point to make. If you can't offer financial support then at least do something to help the animals. The rescue agencies need volunteers and donations of supplies. Hell if you can't give a buck check with the groups and see what supplies they need. I am sure it's not going to break your bank account to donate a bottle of Dawn.

We can all help in some way. Don't just wait for someone else to clean up. This will have an already terrible effect on us and not cleaning it up will hurt us all even more.

I'm suggesting that we offer any person who books and pays for a vac./ charter boat or any other activity in the affected areas within the next 60 days gets to take it off their taxes and the gov. can give BP the bill. they don't have to take the vac. or charter for up to two years.

Also, why is it that there are so few clean up crews (for every mile there are about 10 people (slowly) cleaning up...) except, of course, when President Obama shows up...then they call the training schools to bring all their students out there...then they leave after the president leaves....(saw this myself) and go back to school! Who holds the BP contracts? There are a lot of people with their HAZWOPER 40, TWIC cards and certifications looking for the clean up jobs...why aren't they being hired? Why is a certain company taking 100's of applications, sending them to a 4 hour orientation (they are calling it training – but there is no training involved, nor certifications, not TWIC card, and no 8, 24 let alone 40 HAZWOPER training....) They simply take the applications, direct them to the 4 hour orientation and then tell them that they will call them. It seems to me that this certain company now has all the information they need to bill BP for the training...Its not free....and they are certainly not footing the bill....Someone needs to look into this...NO, I am very much against BP, I hate what they did, I hate that Tony Hayward looks to Louisiana and their people like they are retarded and stupid with his "don't give a damn attitude" – but I very much against fraud, which is what this certain company is doing.......

Well, I guess I'll be the spoiler... BP has put aside $20B which the U.S. Govt is suppose to administer. Why are you having a Telethon? Why are people complaining about BP not paying claims? It's all up to the WH now to administer claims and dole out money like they did after Catrina. The cleanup is now largely run by the WH as well with BP trying to 'plug the hole'. Why are people not angry about the govt's lack of cleanup efforts and even longer now claims process?

Sorry to say but before I donate to anything post Catrina, given the political slant on everything, I look to see whether the local govt is red/blue. If it's blue I just don't give anymore.

By the time BP pays out, more of the environment will have been destroyed, wildlife killed slowly and with excrutiating pain, and people's way of life dissappeared.

We’re preparing the July 10th Worldwide BP Protest 2 to help. It’s global. We’ve been waiting for someone like Larry King to get some big names together. Thank you CNN.

Here’s our bit: Sat July 10 from 2-4pm in Chicago on the SE corner of Randolph & Michigan. Our rallying cry is based on a CNN interview with the wife of one of the shrimpers in the Gulf. He, and the other fishermen, were forced to sign a gag order if they wanted to work for BP's cleanup crew. If they didn't promise silence, BP would not hire them. She was afraid to give the interview and when asked by the CNN reporter why she was still doing it, Kindra Arnesson replied "It starts with one."

This gave us what we needed to stress our global solidarity. BP has also threatened to fire any workers in the cleanup group who accept to wear the protective masks offered gratis by the Health Dept because of the toxicity of the chemical dispersant Corexit 9500. It had been taken off the market in 1989 after the Exxon Valdez spill due to the insidious effects on the nervous system and long-range carcinogenic effects. Of course, BP, unchecked by the EPA (we learned that BP was a major supplier of fuel for the US military) went ahead and sprayed with this dispersant regardless of the known warnings. Help Kindra feel she's not alone. This is our moment to show what we're made of.

I can't believe Larry King is doing this. Is he kidding? Wanna help the Gulf Coast, go ask Hollywood, The Government or BP. Don't come at me...this is ridiculous.

I agree there should be no benefit or fundraising done for this at all. This is BP's mess and they should have to pay 100% for everything. I understand donating if it is a natural disaster or out of human control. But BP took shortcuts to save money and is was their fault that this happened. Maybe the CEO of BP should take that Yacht of his and put out there to skim oil or help in the recovery. At least he would be doing SOMETHING!

This is pathetic. We are going to ask the public to "help" save the Gulf from a publicly traded company's gross ineptitude? I understand the impact on the environment, but why should the public at large be expected to help in the cleanup? If I have a tree that I neglect and a branch from it crushes a neighbors roof, should a neighbor across the street be expected to chip in for the repair? This whole mess is a shared responsibility between BP, Trans Ocean, Halliburton, etc. Let them be soley reposnsible for cleaning up the mess and if one or more of them needs to be liquidated to acheive that goal – so be it. Let us also all be reminded that nothing to date has been able to stop the flow of oil. The blowout preventer did NOT work. Why should we helpt to "bail out" the Gulf, if this same scenario can happen all over again...

When BP has spent every last nickel it has, then come asking for my money. Until then, the company directly responsible needs to be held accountable. They need to pay, pay, pay.

I am curious about how United Way plans to disburse this money. They have never been a direct aid agency and don't have any infrastructure for this type of casework. How does one apply for funds through United Way? What guidelines will they use to determine who get help? This is complicated for agencies who have done this for years or even the government. I would think twice before donating my money to United Way for something in which they have no expertise.

Hello, I think that what Larry king is doing is great!!

My family and I plan on watching the telethon this evening. I would like to mention that Ian Somerhalder was the first celebrity to step forward and mention a telethon. Ian also filmed a PSA for Louisiana to raise awareness. Will Ian be co-hosting the event? While we can appreciate the other stars participating in the telethon we do look forward to someone mentioning that it was Ian Somerhalder's initial idea for a telethon in the first place. A special thanks to Ian for his efforts and commitment.

Let the first person who has never driven or ridden in a car or received anything transported by an 18-wheeler speak out against helping the people of the Gulf Coast. The economy is collapsing down here due to this tragedy. Everyone from retail to medical to everything in-between is adversely affected and many will not be able to pay their bills. We have a right to protect America's resources – our coastline. BP will probably not deem a nurse who just lost her job because of the blow to our economy as a legitimate claim.

I think it is commendable that Larry King and celebrities are doing this fundraiser. I am directly affected by this oil spill as I live in Panama City, FL. I think it is a shame that people would question the motives of Larry King and crew. If this happened in YOUR backyard perhaps you wouldn't be so quick to judge. I am sure that the money raised will be given out appropriately, at this point something is better than nothing. YES, BP shouild be handeling everything but they aren't, so I would like to thank all those participating and to those who willl donate to raise money and awareness to the devestation and destruction of the Gulf Coast.

This is not our oil- it is YOUR oil – everyone's oil. But we are destroyed by it's effects. The problems are deep and obscure and charities will need to help the people affected by the tragic blow to the economy due to the blowout of the well.

My heart goes out to the people of Louisiana but I can't find the justice in giving money towards this. As I see it, every dollar given is a dollar is a dollar less that they can justify saving. Okay, I'm confused. Why is anything being done which will lesson the amount that BP must pay? Isn't there some other diasaster or charity which the President of the US has not said outright that a corporation will pay every penny for, that your energies could be directed to?

I hate to think that this is a pathetic attempt at publicity for these 'stars' to cash in on this disaster but in light of BP's financial responsibility for the Gulf, I'm afraid that it certainly looks that way.

The Solar 500 Plan

Put solar pannels on 500 (500 ft long) poultry houses in south MS.
Sell the electricity to power companies for 10% less than they can produce it from oil.
Put the money earned into a fund and add a new house as soon as possible. Then you have some the sun payed for.
As the number of houses gets larger the number of houses should grow faster.

While I fully support raising public awareness of the devestation to the Gulf, fundraising for clean-up??? Excuuuuse me??? BP is supposed to cover ALL costs of the clean-up. The Nature conservancy is business partners with BP. Shouldn't they be shifting funds to their clean-up operations anyway? BP should pay oil collectors twice the going rate for a barrel regardless if it is delivered in a resonably useful form. You would be surprised how inventive people would become if they can get paid for their efforts. A flat rate offers no incentive to work harder. Who knows there may be some millionares made if they can get paid.

I just returned from a long weekend in Gulf Shores. Every day I went out with a bag and walked on the beach and picked up tar balls. It's not my job and I was there on vacation but I love the beach and I felt like I was making some contribution however small. Even though there are still many tar balls there, every one that I picked up is one less that will wash up on the sand and cause more problems. I encourage visitors to return to the area. The businesses are really struggling right now and desperately need your business. There was no oil in the water and no odor. The tarballs are in the water and some on the beach but they are of a fairly hard consistency and won't stick to your skin.

This is good, but wrong. I would donate, but do not believe it's the right thing to do unless BP matches all donations. It's the only fair thing to do! BP made this mess, they are responsible for it. Should there be $100,000 donated to various organizations along the coast, BP should match those funds so that after this is over those organizations can use the money to further their causes outside the realm of this disaster. If this was a natural disaster, I would be right up with the rest of the folks writing a check...but here I need to draw a line. For the record, I am affected by this, and am watching others in my area affected directly.

Their should be no need for donations. BP should be 100% Responsible for all costs associated with cleanup. Shame on them!!!

Suggesting a compromise ; Allow BP to offer to reimburse any person who donates on the Telethon tonight. Tony Hayward could build some much-needed credibility, and he could promise the reimbursements would be in addition to the BP escrow payouts. CNN would not be criticized for doing the Telethon, thus providig a win win win fo every person involved.

Regardless of whether BP should pay, the residents of the Gulf area are desparate for help and this telethon seems to be the only way to demonstrate my heart felt need to help.

This is not something I am willing to pay for or help fix, It is BP and all of the other mobster gang. You did it, you pay for it. I think each and every business effected by this should receive $ 1M for this and BP should be shut down indefinitely and we the american people should not have to pay ONE RED CENT for their negligence and greed. When answering a question from a viewer: "why should we donate money if BP is supposed to be paying for everyting?", CNN replied "We should all do our part to help", and "because of the immediate need for relief money". The problem with donating is by the time all the money, good will, etc go thru those filters called (Greed, Corruption, Waste, Mismanagement, and Delay) there is very little left for its intended purpose. I want to thank CNN's Larry King and all the thespians that are uniting to help raise funds for the much needed help for our Gulf Coast. Through all the tears that I have cried over the innocent animals affected by this tragedy I actually smiled for the first time in over 50 days because of the Gulf Coast Relief Telethon that you have all put together. I also wanted to you to know that I feel very strongly about this as I live in Pensacola, Florida and have seen the tarballs and the birds with oil on them. I can't thank the thespians enough who come out tonight to do this telethon.

Well, If these people were making "all" that money that they claim they are now losing, why didn't they save any for a rainy (or oily) day? I work hard for my money and I have enough to pay my bills (after Uncle Sugar pockets 30% of my earnings). Perhaps the government can just put a moratorium on all expenses incurred on the "Gulf" people until BP comes through with the money they have promised (like we can trust them!). When I was laid off in Minnesota I sold my house and moved to a good job in Oregon. When that one turned south I moved to Oklahoma.
These people can relocate too until that cesspool of a gulf is cleaned up. (wasn't that great before the spill). I know this will ruffle some oily feathers but I am getting sick of this "poor me" stuff all the time.

Not one cent!!! BP needs to pay the whole bill. If you can help a friend fine, but who needs the United Way bureaucrats to skim 10 or 20 percent? Skim the oil, not the public. This is not Katrina. A company caused this.

This is a desperate situation that is going to affect us all. We can't penalize the people in the gulf and not help because big oil is supposed to pay. They need our help now. Whatever you can give. As sad and as heartbreaking as this disaster is, appealing to the public to fund any portion wether cleanup or otherwise is ridiculous and wrong. A private company caused this, they should be funding/hiring these agencies to cleanup, as well as paying for the livelihoods ruined. More pressure needs to be put on BP to pony up the funds instead of just stating what they plan on doing. Our lawmakers need to be filing criminal charges and seizing assets, not talking in front of cameras. While these charities do admirable work, I won't donate to clean up the mess BP caused.

Nothing at this time needs to be rebuilt or fixed, what we need is our resource of visitors back...if you took all the money you raised and gave away free vacations for people to visit the Gulf this would make a difference. I'm sorry, why are we being asked to pay for this disaster? I, like many Americans, am living paycheck to paycheck. I don't think the executives at BP are struggling like we are. BP should pay, and pay dearly. I live on the Gulf Coast, and will likely be very afftected by this tragedy, but I can't pay for the clean up. The American Taxpayers stand to lose 190 BILLION dollars in this SINGLE Oil Spill thru lost jobs, lost industry and lost tourism. Ethanol production is on-tap to produce more immediately usable fuel than that created from the crude Oil America purchases from Saudi Arabia! Every gallon of Ethanol directly replaces a full 6 gallons of crude Oil. President Obama should immediately remove the crass, callous and heavy handed tariff on Brazil's Ethanol exports and immediately purchase as much Ethanol from Brazil as Brazil is willing to sell to America.

After reading many of the posts on this, I am embarassed to realize that THIS is what America is reduced to. Yes, BP should pay the bill, but they wont. And the government wont make them. Money is needed to fund the cleanup. After constant comments like Tony 'Wanting his life back' do you really expect BP to follow through with the funding and entire cleanup effort? I, personally, do not.

And the constant remarks about the economy being down the tubes... EVERY one of you are sitting on a lap-top, on the internet, probably sitting in a cafe sipping a $5 cup of coffee. You can afford those luxuries but you can't afford a few dollars to aid the cleanup and possibly save entire species from going extinct? How selfish.

The entire thing sucks, but those of you who complain about the situation AND the possible solutions are a waste of space and should turn off your computer and go back to your jobs to make your precious money that you are so unwilling to part with in a time of crisis.

This fundraiser is "bleeding heart" with no brains. The only entities that should be paying for any cleanup related to the oil spill are the companies involved with the oil rig and well. Please think about that before you help BP out by paying money to this fundraiser.

I am so saddened and heartbroken and mostly FURIOUS at the BP!! This is all their fault and now families, economy and thousands of wildlife are suffering. It's just ashamed that it's 60 days later, and oil continues to gush from the bottom of the ocean, with no end till August the earliest. BP took shortcuts, was driven by profits, and as a result are ruining our environment and people's livelihoods for decades to come.
Aside from donating, I pledge to NEVER buy a penny of BP gas, Castrol oil, or any BP product. This will send a sign to other oil companies to be safe and conscientious with their drilling efforts otherwise it will affect their bottom line. Money seems to be the only thing they are concerned with anyway.

Ya know...I understand that BP should foot the bill...BUT, I am no so cynical to think there is not something we can ALL do for our 'family' living in the affected area...we are ALL "family" – the 'human family', and what we can do in addition to what BP MUST DO...is to help "NOW"...BP will (unfortunately) take their greedy conglomerate time to help...but this is something WE can do to get help faster for those who need us – our 'family'.

People have been devastated financially by this disaster. Larry King , CNN and the celebrity volunteers are trying to help and all you want to do is be insulting. Shame on you! Like to thank LKL for all the wonderful interview over the years. With the benefit tonight, we continue to bring forth this tragic disaster. AC does a great job of keeping a foot up BPs backdoor. Seeing as CEO Tony & his crew, seems to think they are going to get away from their responsible to this mess his company has created.
It's not so funny, but, a few week ago I talked about how BPs was not going to come right out, and tell exactly how much oil was spewing from this well. They first, needed to protect their brand. I'm sure, they thought that they would have it under control before anyone could calculate. Now that we find out, that BP, in fact had a worse scenario figure on hand, within the 1st week. We know now that they were more interested in CAPTURING (siphoning) what oil they could, instead of actually plugging/stopping the leak.
I tell you, this planet will only take so much abuse, as would anything, before enough is enough!
Our greed and ignorance is catching up to us. And our childrens children will not have a decent planet to survive on.

I may not have a lot but when a disaster like this strikes I won't just turn my back. Yes it is BP's fault but they have been lying since day one and have done virtually nothing to keep this destruction to a minimum. But they aren't releasing the money that is needed now. I'm curious – what were the fundraising results from last night's telethon????

The Nature Conservancy has nothing on its website about the telethon. National Wildlife Federation only has the announcement about the telethon.

How much was actually raised here, and how will it be used? This information should be prominently featured here, and the charity groups' site. How much goes to each group involved (UW, NC, NWF), and what will they be doing with it, specifically??

i watched up untill i saw they raised close to 1 million...does anyone know the exact amount they raised? i hope lots more:-)
