Tonight on LKL: The Acceptance Speech You Didn't Hear

Posted: 05:07 PM ET

Tonight, an LKL exclusive!  Roger Ross Williams will deliver the acceptance speech he didn't give last night.

It’s what many viewers are calling the Academy Awards' “Kanye moment.”

The win for best documentary short took an odd turn when the film’s producer, Elinor Burkett, grabbed the microphone away from director-producer Roger Ross Williams during the acceptance speech.

Burkett told Salon.com that the pair have had some issues which she said resulted in Ross no longer speaking to her and her being shut out of events surrounding the Academy Awards.

Burkett would not be denied, however, when it came time to accept the Oscar and she was soon behind Williams when he hot-footed it to the microphone.

Their film, “Music by Prudence,” follows Prudence, a disabled woman in Zimbabwe whose voice has been described as hauntingly beautiful. Part of the strife, Burkett said, was a disagreement over whether the movie should focus on Prudence or the entire band of which she is a part, Liyana.

For his part, Williams told Salon that he was the only one who should have been allowed to speak, and that Burkett was removed as producer a year ago – a point she's sued over.

"The academy is very clear that only one person can speak. I own the film. She has no claim whatsoever," he said. "She has nothing to do with the movie. She just ambushed me. I was sort of in shock."

Bruce Vilanch, head writer for the Oscars, told CNN that because the director ran down so fast, when the (slower) producer of the film finally got down there she was ready for her turn at the microphone.

Burkett said Williams' elderly mother used her cane to block her from following him to the podium.

It's easy to understand the passions behind such a wonderful film, but that was very rude for her to take over the microphone from Mr. Williams! It would have been nice to hear what he wanted to say! How did we , as a society become so very selfish? Maria C.

Elinor Burkett definitely seemed rude, pushy and not unlike many 'Oscar Moments' of the past. Thankfully, it appears the Oscar's have adopted the 'Hook' to either turn off the microphone when an nominee stumbles into a incoherent, rambling, bumbling speech, or goes over their allotted time-span and the music strikes up to help cover a stumbling gaffe as that person is escorted to the laugh and cry room area.

If Elinor Burkett had anything substantial to say, she should have bum crashed the laugh and cry room area where she could expound on her version and 'vision' which apparently was rejected a full year ago in the production of the movie 'precious'.

Global Warming (Danger-Danger Will Robinson)

A research team's observations of the accelerated Methane Release in the Arctic region on earth recently showed that the permafrost submerged on the shelf is now perforated and leaking large amounts of methane into the atmosphere.

More than 80 percent of the deep water and more than half of surface water had methane levels around eight times higher than found in normal seawater, according to the study published in the journal Science. The researchers warned that the release of even a fraction of the methane stored in the shelf could trigger abrupt climate warming.

"Ocean-bottom permafrost contains vast amounts of carbon, and experts are concerned that its release as methane gas would lead to warmer atmospheric temperatures, thus creating a positive-feedback loop that would lead to more methane escaping from the permafrost and more global warming," they said.

Current average methane concentrations in the Arctic average about 1.85 parts per million, the highest in 400,000 years, said Shakhova.

Concentrations above the East Siberian Arctic Shelf are even higher, and scientists are concerned because the undersea permafrost "has been showing signs of destabilization already," she added. "If it further destabilizes, the methane emissions... would be significantly larger."

Geological records indicate that atmospheric methane concentrations have varied between about .3 to .4 parts per million during cold periods to .6 to .7 parts per million during warm periods. And the Arctic is pouring out 1.85 parts per million of Methane Gas NOW!!!

Lowering Oxygen Levels in at least 3 of the world's ocean's are directly related to the effects of Global Warming.

Lower levels of oxygen in the Earth's oceans, particularly off the United States' Pacific Northwest coast, could be another sign of fundamental changes linked to global climate change, scientists say.

They warn that the oceans' complex undersea ecosystems and fragile food chains are being disrupted. In some spots off Washington state and Oregon , the almost complete absence of oxygen has left tons of Dungeness crab carcasses littering the ocean floor, crippling colonies of sea anemones and produced vast mats of potentially noxious bacteria that thrive in such conditions.

The Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans low oxygen areas appear to be spreading, covering more square miles, creeping toward the surface and in some places, such as the Pacific Northwest , and encroaching on the continental shelf within sight of the coastline.

"The depletion of oxygen levels in all three oceans is striking," said Gregory Johnson , an oceanographer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Seattle . In some spots, such as off the Southern California coast, oxygen levels have dropped roughly 20 percent over the past 25 years. Elsewhere, scientists say, oxygen levels might have declined by one-third over 50 years!!!

Thank you Larry for giving Roger Ross Williams the chance to say his speech! I thought it was really rude and arrogant of Elinor Burkett to have interrupted him the way she did.

Thanks, Larry, for having Mr. Williams on the program to deliver his speech. That was a wonderful gesture on the part of LKL. I have no idea what is really going on but I think it reminds us how ridiculous we can appear when people don't have an understanding of the background. No matter what the problem is, she is the only one that looks at fault.

janette tx   March 9th, 2010 6:28 am ET

Someone should have turned off the sound on her!!!

Susan62509   March 9th, 2010 7:33 am ET

Elinor Burkett just blacklisted herself in the industry. You reap what you sow.

Gerald Jolly   March 9th, 2010 10:56 am ET

Is burket Keaney West's MOM

Expat American   March 9th, 2010 12:22 pm ET

Given Burkett’s impressive girth, at first glance I hypothesize that it would take a little more than an elderly person’s walking cane to block her forward momentum.

That could have gotten ugly. Thankfully Williams’ mother was not injured in the ensuing stampede.

Rose   March 9th, 2010 3:53 pm ET

Burkett was removed as producer a year ago yet she rudely interrupted Williams and rambled on meaninglessly (wasting precious time given to speeches). It was a gross display of self importance and lack of decorum. If she has legal issues with her associates, such behavior at a high profile awards ceremony was not the correct solution.

Joy Behar told Larry King she would have Burkett on her show. It was gracious of LKL to allow Williams to finish his speech. Too bad that Joy is giving Burkett yet another platform to justify wrecking someone's Oscar speech. Burkett also had the nerve to say that Williams 87 year old mother was trying to trip her with her cane. She got "her moment" on stage – at the price of making a complete ass of herself.
