Ex-'Growing Pains' actor missing

Posted: 05:03 PM ET

When former "Growing Pains" actor Andrew Koenig missed his flight home to Los Angeles from Vancouver, British Columbia, last week, his father became worried.

Walter Koenig, an actor known for playing Pavel Chekov in the original "Star Trek" series, had just received a letter from his son that had a "despondent tone," according to a family statement on the father's Web site.

Two days later - on February 18 - the elder Koenig and his wife, Judy Koenig, called Vancouver police to report his 41-year-old son missing, Detective Raymond Payette said.

"Andrew has recently been despondent and his family and friends are concerned for his well-being," a police statement said.

The Koenigs are reaching out for public help, but their son's disappearance is too painful for them to appear on camera to talk about it, Walter Koenig said.

"I tried it once, and it was just too difficult," he said.

His parents last talked on the phone to their son on February 9 - a week before he failed to board his flight home, the family statement said.

I'm sure the parents are consumed with grief and fear for their child, especially if he is suffering from depression and is not reaching out to the family for help. God Bless them and may God return Andrew home safely to his loving parents.

I AM TRULY SORRY THAT THIS IS HAPPENING TO YOU. IN THIS DAY AND AGE, THERE COULD BE SO MANY REASONS FOR HIS DISAPPEARANCE. MAKE SURE THE POLICE ARE WORKING HARD AND FAST AND GETTING ON ANY SHOW ABOUT MISSING PEOPLE, WOULD BE A GOOD THING. NANCY GRACE MIGHT SAY YES. I'M PRAYING FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY THAT ANDREW WILL BE RETURNED SAFELY TO YOU VERY SOON.

I hope this young man is found alive and well. This is devastating for a family to deal with.

I'm very sorry that Andrew is missing, but the story was well below your usual investigative quality. Many adults have psychological problems and disappear, but to use the "Vancouver" connection to focus on a child star from 20 years ago is somewhat questionable. Why not tell a story about an unknown person who has been missing and has reunited with his family instead of a story including comments such as, "There was a sighting of Andrew at an Olympic venue last night," when earlier in your story you said that he hasn't been seen since Feb.14th? I sincerely hope that Andrew is found and reunited with his loving family, and I appreciate your focus on his disappearance, but let's hope that everyday people matter just as much in the world of journalism.
