Elin Nordegren hopes to save marriage

Posted: 08:46 AM ET

Elin Nordegren is hoping to save her marriage to Tiger Woods because she doesn't want to raise their two children without a father.

"Elin wants a solid family life," a Florida source told PEOPLE. "She was a child of divorce and felt her dad slighted her. She absolutely does not want that to happen to Sam and Charlie. So she wants to keep her family together even if she and Tiger live together as friends instead of lovers."

During the past week, Nordegren, 30, reportedly visited her husband at the Gentle Path sexual addiction clinic in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he has been getting treatment.

During the middle of the six-week counseling session, a patient's spouse is invited to visit for about a week, according to a former patient of the alcohol addiction section of the Hattiesburg clinic.

"This is the rough part where the patient has to admit to his wife that he [cheated]," the former patient told PEOPLE.

Yes – I hope they can work it out. Good Luck to them.

Theresa   January 27th, 2010 9:39 am ET

I wonder if the case was reversed if Mr. Woods would be standing by his wife. Don't think so! He'll crawl back up that pedestal--the companies will return –so too will the $$$$$ & all will be forgiven! Oh,to be a celebrity.

luckybee   January 27th, 2010 9:42 am ET

Her children? They don't look like her at all!!!

jan   January 27th, 2010 10:27 am ET

I hope the media especially diane dimond (stalking their home by boat) backs off and give them some space.

Stacey   January 27th, 2010 10:50 am ET

They would be able to save their marriage if people leave them alone... Their private life should not be their public life..... Ok we all get it, he cheated.... What man doesn't? It is none of our business anyways.... This is the problem with our socitey, people seem to think that because a person is a celebrity that everything they do is our business....... Leave them alone already.... There are more important things going on in this world then Tiger Woods cheating on his wife... That is their problem, not ours, or the media.....

MsNomerN Az   January 27th, 2010 12:54 pm ET

I think that Diane Dimond is the most obnoxious and uneeded reporter alive.

As to Tiger and Elin...celebrity or not this type of experience happens to regular folk too and I always think that divorce is the worst solution. Those two can recover from this episode and these cruel realities. Infedelity does not mean that a person does not love the spouse. Marriage is not successful automaticallly. Relationship is very difficult..intimacy is not something that most people are expert in being. I pray that these two remarkable people can heal their lives and grow together toward a happy peaceful and fullfilling future either together or apart. I am sure they both have things they need to heal from and become....I am certain that Elin is not perfect and she can grow spiritually along with Tiger to a new beginning for each other. It is possible...In recovery miracles in relationship happen daily around us it is just that most of us don't have our laundry aired by the likes of Diane Dimonds (insufferalbe) in the world.... Just look at what she did reporting about MJ...she was the most biased of reporters...almost as bad as Nancy Grace.....

Lori - Justice For Michael   January 27th, 2010 1:06 pm ET

Putting a marriage back together is extremely hard work. I understand Ms. Nordegren wanting to work things out because of the children and wanting them to be a family unit with both parents. However, if both the parents are not committed to each other in the first place, if the love and the trust is gone, then just going through the motions for the "sake of the children" may not be the best thing either, IMHO. I hope that if they truly want to remain married that they will both receive counseling and figure out how to come to terms with everything and put the marriage first. This will be a long and difficult process. If it does come to a divorce....the parents can mitigate the effects on the children....but this too, takes a great deal of committment, work and compassion. Divorce does not have to mean a disaster for the children if both parents put the children first and allow each parent to fulfill parenting roles.

Connie ~ IL   January 27th, 2010 1:11 pm ET

If they can work things out, good for them! Hopefully they will be able to take care of their personal business privately.

lola   January 27th, 2010 1:35 pm ET

Diane Dimond should not be given the opportunity over and over again to destroy people's lives, regardless of their celebrity. She is a disgusting pig and should be hung out to dry. Any media outlet that allows her to continue should be ostracized and not taken seriously as a reputable source.

jamis   January 27th, 2010 3:07 pm ET

@Lori,

I agree with you. It will be a looooong difficult road ahead. Even with the best of intentions, the likelihood of it not working out is pretty high in my opinion. I'm not being negative or pessimistic, I don't think, I've just seen it not work out, a few times, even with the best of intentions...

Elin, best of luck to you. You're young and have a lot of life to live. I hope that you have more days of true happiness than days of regret.

Suzanne   January 27th, 2010 4:37 pm ET

@LORI...I agree with you that if there is no love and trust, going thru the motions is beneficial to no one and usually psychologically harmful in the long-run to the children...I don't agree however, that marriage is hard work. Road construction is hard work. If the marriage is built on a solid foundation from the start, it won't fall apart. I believe that is why people are often married in a church, typically, under God, because marriage it is not a partnership, but rather a Trinity; God, and the two other parties, what a concept. If you have no foundation on which to build in the first place, you can"t rebuild what was never there to begin with. In my opinion, she is a co-dependant in this situation and needs counseling as well; as who in their right mind with any self-respect would stay with him! Please! Why would you want to continue to live a lie every day, how could you sleep at night? There is no truth in that relationship, nor will there ever be, because they cannot be honest with themselves. Children are not stupid, they pick up everything in their environment, including the energy of their parents and are extremely sensitive to it. Divorce would be a much better solution, as the negativity and stress exchanged between them on a subconscious level will always be there. As our beloved MJ says, and I couldn't agree more...."It's all for LOVE....L.O.V.E"....unfortunately Tiger apparently loves everyone but his wife.

Gerald Jolly   January 27th, 2010 5:47 pm ET

Let us hope that the effort Elin is willing to put in will result in a satisfactory resolution to this idiocy.

For her sake and the sake of the children I hope the therapy he is taking for his "SO-CALLED" sex addiction works, however I am a firm believer that a PLAYER, IS A PLAYER, AND WILL ALWAYS BE A PLAYER.

The think that puzzles me most is, after looking at the photos of the women he cheated with, I dont understand, why!!

Most of those women are less than desireable, and most have a pretty checkered background. GOOD GOD some are well known call girls.

I truly enjoy watching Tiger play golf, but I'm really not interested in his extra carricular activities, particularly with the "WHORES" he has chosen over a very beautiful woman.

I hope she can find peace and closure in her's and the childrens future.

NBo matter what resolution comes out of this, she would be smart to take the three hundred million dollar award she got and salt it away in a Swiss Bank to protect her future.

Karen   January 27th, 2010 10:16 pm ET

He just started and I can not stand to listen to his political garbage. Get on with it.

jane howard   January 27th, 2010 11:53 pm ET

We applaud you for the panel selection on last night's show.
Although your show tonight will probably concern the President's State of the Union speech, please do not bore us again by having your buddy, John McCain. He is tired, and we are tired of seeing his extremely frequent appearances on your show. It has been sad to watch him develop into such a bitter old man.

jane howard   January 27th, 2010 11:55 pm ET

Congratulations on the selection of individuals on last night's panels. Hopefully, you will not repeat your pattern of having John McCain on tonight. He is tired, and we are tired of watching your buddy repeat his bitter phrases.

Tom from New Jersey   January 28th, 2010 12:35 am ET

Larry Tell Sen. Mcain I respect him for his service but the whole Congress is nothing but a bunch of deadbeats just looking forward to their next election and forgot that they are there to serve us. I say term limits for all of them. A Vietnam Vet

Cindy   January 28th, 2010 1:07 am ET

Thank you Larry for bringing John McCain on. i think it is good to have some balance.

Gretchen   January 28th, 2010 1:27 am ET

Larry,John Mccain is Bitter, the President reached out to everyone tonight,John wants to keep the arguments going,we will reject him,we are tired of the bickering.Americans need help, not the critical name calling and belittling coming from sour grapes.John you heard the President extend his hand to invite republicans how dare you continue with the lies.I hope that since they are so critical that they come to the President tomorrow with a health care plan that won't increase the deficit, that will end the awful practice of preconditions, and that will protect medicare, since they have all the answers bring them to the table in the morning. To John Mccain if I were a soldier I would not care whether or not the soldier fightingto save my butt was straight or gay.The time is now.

Gretchen   January 28th, 2010 1:31 am ET

Ms Huffington, how dare you.I hope all liberals are listening to this trader.Stop going to Huffington post.Let her sit there and agree to bash our President, and lose her followers.Screw the Huffington Post!!!

Cindy   January 28th, 2010 1:31 am ET

I did not hear anything that suggested John McCain is bitter. He is very articulate and speaks without all the emotion and ugliness that is constantly displayed on this blog. The problem with the healthcare bill is that it will increase the deficit and it will not protect Medicare.

Cindy   January 28th, 2010 1:36 am ET

If the President has tried to work with the Republicans on healthcare and they say no to everything, why doesn't the President clearly state what issue he has with what the Republicans are suggesting. For example, are he and the Democrats against insurance companies selling across state lines to create competition.

Ask Debbie Wasserman how she feels about such suggestions. I hear what the Republicans don't like about the bill, but I don't hear what the Democrats dislike about the Republican suggestions. It doesn't really add.

debbie stewart   January 28th, 2010 1:45 am ET

I think that people should leave Tiger Woods alone, because 99 per cent of men have cheated, even those reporters, the men from CNN, they all have probably been unfaithful, and they should stop thinking that they are angels.

victor sedo   January 28th, 2010 1:45 am ET

OBAMA DID EXTREMLY WELL. BUT CNN AND THE REPUBLICANS KEEP TRY ING TO DOWN GRADE HIM. REPUBLICANS JUST DON'T WANT TO BE CRITIZED OR UP STAGED. AMERICANS ARE EXTREMLY MEME'S AND EXPECT IMMEDIATE RESULTS THE USA OF A AND THERE GOV'NMENTS ARE RUN BY THE DRUG COMPANIES AND INSURANCE CO. AND THE PEOPLE SEEM TO ENJOY THIS GOVERNANCE!

gayle crane   January 28th, 2010 1:50 am ET

It is so sad that conservative commentaries are so negative. Instead of throwing rocks at an administration that was handed their mess, they should start showing some effort to solve problems, and help find solutions. Americans are listening. They keep hearing negative, negative, negative from the right. It is TIRESOME! Democrats should just get the job done without them. They have the majority. Go to work and get it done, dems.

John Kitchen   January 28th, 2010 1:59 am ET

Yeah, yeah, I know – she's blond!

Adolfo   January 28th, 2010 2:02 am ET

Insurance companies are the rats of the world......health care should be totaly free for all....that homeless person lying in the gutter should be picked up and cared for.....every human being....should be loved with all of our capasity to do so.....we spend trillions of dollars making wepons of hate and distruction.....killing people we don't even know.....who do you think is running this world.....and all the media pretties just keep rattling on as they have no care in the world....with their huge salaries for just looking pretty on tv.....

Nancy B   January 28th, 2010 2:08 am ET

Maybe the President needs to lower his nose and realize he has won the office and stop running for office. I was shocked when he patted the Dems on the back and gave the stiff upper lip type statement to keep working on passing health reform. Then he looks at the Reps and made the snide remark about they'll dread monthly meetings with him. How childish of a President. He gives me the feeling the U.S. is now his, and he's just letting us live here.
It's so disappointing these days.

Jim   January 28th, 2010 2:10 am ET

I cannot believe what I am hearing/reading, what is wrong with that lady? He will always be playing the 19th hole.

Bonnie   January 28th, 2010 2:15 am ET

It is sad to see the people in the United State acting as if the President have all the answers to life problems. Half of the people that is questioning his decision would not even run for the office. For the task he has taken on he is doing more than enough to help us.
If they want more they need to do more than talk. It's going to take everyone pulling together to make world a better place. The President is just one of many who is making a different. As
JF Kennedy said, "Ask not what your Country can do for you, ask what you can do for your Country." That still hold true today!

janet grigson   January 28th, 2010 2:26 am ET

larry, ask all senators to stop seeking medical services at our military hospitals unless they are retired from one of our branchs of armed services ,they already have very good health insurance yet most of them when it comes to health care reform say that they do not want goverment run health care, what do they think that walter reed medical center is?my husband served 23years in the us navy and yet when i reached 65 they stopped me from seeing the family doctor at bamc and made me go to a civilian doctor who does not have access to my medical records.HEALTH CARE NOW FOR EVERYONE JANET

Kat   January 28th, 2010 8:55 am ET

Yeah, yeah. The lawyer advised her to hang in there for more $$$$$$$$$$$$$. These women only want money and fame. This spells Kardashian mentality!

Kat   January 28th, 2010 9:04 am ET

McCain being an ex service man acts as if he is the ONLY soldier to have ever served the US and so we owe him forever. He lived to come back and tell the tale.

Many died fighting for this country – especially black ones seem to be good enough to DIE serving America but not good enough to LIVE serving America as president.

Wicked Publicans!

Kat   January 28th, 2010 9:09 am ET

They are fighting the president because they know that if they give him a chance and he will do well and they do not want a black man to succeed. I cannot stomach Michael Steele. Traitor! The Publicans paid that black woman to stand right behind that NJ brat of a politician last night!

And the stigma & castigation attached to an extra-Marital affair?
A Haitian Divorce perhaps?
Did Tiger Woods ever say his prayers?
The Family that prays together?

Faithless Tiger Woods without Christ?

@PROFDAVE...I agree...however, it is not about not showing weakness, it is about not 'being' weakness'...you must be that which you are seeking....'Self Mastery does not mean that you are the best at your sport or craft...it is control of one's own thoughts, feelings, and actions for your highest good....what you do not master, will master you every time! When are people going to 'wake up', and understand that you cannot fill a void within you from outside of you...it is a bottomless pit...discipline and power comes only from within.... it seems to me that shrinks only analyze the mind from a limited perspective (their own mind), and they cannot measure units of consciousness, but Stephen Lewis can.....Expansion of consciousness raises your vibration and heals...aimprogram.com.... A. Smith, Oregon   January 28th, 2010 6:56 pm ET

@ Kat, John McCain under duress during his interrogation by the North Vietnamese soldiers, confessed to various war crimes which he signed documents on, and his confession was also video taped.

Yes later, JOHN MCCAIN is now the one telling the American public confessions by torture should be allowable in order to convict suspected terrorists.

It took nearly 30 years in order for a Democratic majority and Democratic led administration under President Obama to expand and provide meaningful updates to the GI Bill which helps veterans with home purchases, educational, apprentice and work opportunity's.

Senator John McCain is no friend of the Veterans of Military Service, and with his OK to torture stance, He is one of the largest political HYPOCRITES in existence.

Deb n Texas   January 28th, 2010 8:03 pm ET

I don't blame her – let him help her with the kids. Smart thinking!

lilarose in bandon, or   January 28th, 2010 10:48 pm ET

Elin, your hubby isn't who you thought he was.

He will never stop being a womanizer. That is something like believing child molesters can change their ways.

Give your kids a chance. Escape to Sweden and meet a nice NORMAL guy who can be a great dad to your kids.

Tiger's stripes won't change.

Sandra Battle   January 28th, 2010 10:52 pm ET

Elin, THE LADY

I am so glad she is taking the high road on her personal situation.
I hope the marriage heal and Tiger's game is be just as strong.

Work it and don't continue to reflex on it – KEEP YOUR FAMILES and THOSE FRIENDS out of it. Only GOD should be in the mist.

Best Wishes

luckybee   January 29th, 2010 12:50 am ET

Elin Nordegren will be the last blond angel in her familie tree.

Jim Zajac   January 29th, 2010 2:04 am ET

I'm just glad Elin had the composure and restraint with that golf club not to make Tiger end up the way those seal puppies in the Artic do.

Ann   January 29th, 2010 3:07 am ET

There is noway a man who has 2 different lives one not known by the other can be changed. this man has no empathy and borders on a sociopathic personality! Elin is just looking for future heartbreak. the man is a complete liar and a cheat. Why would she want to raise her children under the influence of that kind of male. If she knows what is good for her children she will Run to the nearest car bus or plane and fly away home. Tiger is a poor excuse for a male certainly not a man!

Sheila   January 29th, 2010 7:14 pm ET

Mmm...I think Elin cannot leave all that money! Of course she'l take Tiger back – but not because of love, oh no! But love for money, yes. I could never sleep with a man who has cheated on me! I divorced my 1st husband for that very reason. My kids did very well, even better without their dad! They got distinctions at school and university after we split. I never had to tell them to do their homework! They are the most independent little people around! Our divorce made them strong for the cruelities of this world. So please do not use the kids as an excuse! If you are unhappy, get out! Dont stay for the sake of the kids – they are better off without the cheater who makes their mommy unhappy and in turn makes them unhappy! My 2nd marriage is amazing!! He is my man and my man only and thats how I like it!! If I could turn the clock and marry my 2nd husband 1st, I would be the happiest woman alive! But, God has His reasons!! Goodluck to Tiger and Elin. I still love you Tiger so do what makes you happy, not the public and not Elin, but think of you first!! You can only make someone happy if you are happy within yourself!! Dont forget that.

Janet   January 29th, 2010 7:25 pm ET

to Stacey: My man doesn't cheat, it is not necessarily a male "trait" but rather a male "choice"

amy   February 5th, 2010 1:27 am ET

It is well known that in the USA if a marriage lasts 10 years, the wife claims half the fortune of her husband. Elin has decided to cancel the divorce proceedings in order to benefit half of Tiger's wealth. I am sure that this is the reason. And Tiger might agree in order to save all the benefits he could receive during this time. Its all about money!!!

Henry   February 17th, 2010 10:07 pm ET

Tiger does not owe America an apology. He owes his wife and his maker. He needs to come back to the course yesterday. Tiger is golf.
