January 4, 2010 Jim Moret: When One Day Can Change Your LifePosted: 07:36 PM ET
Jim Moret is Chief Correspondent for Inside Edition and he is a frequent guest on CNN and HLN and is a regular guest host of Larry King Live.
One night before a broadcast he asked "How would you like to host sometime?" I said, "sure" as you might expect, and I ended up filling in for Larry about 30 times before leaving the network in 2001. Our paths did not cross again until nearly eight years later. I had just finished the manuscript for my inspirational book "The Last Day of My Life" and I wanted Larry to write a blurb for the cover. I went to Nate'n Al's, the famous Beverly Hills deli where Larry can be found along with his old school pals every morning he is in town. Sure enough, there he was, holding court as usual. I walked up to him and he greeted me warmly, as if we had seen each other just the day before. Not only was he eager to read what I had written, but I soon saw a hand extended along with a voice saying, "Jim, it's Michael Viner. I still want to buy your book." Michael had tried a few months earlier to purchase my manuscript but it looked as if we already had another deal in place and we passed on his offer. As it turned out, that deal fell through and Michael's interest was quite welcome. As you might guess, we did make that deal, and while Michael passed away several months ago after a battle with cancer, I am proud that my book is part if his legacy with Phoenix Books. I am honored to say that Larry liked my manuscript and graciously provided the number one blurb on my book jacket. News events, beginning with Michael Jacksons untimely death, brought Larry and me together in another way. I soon found myself a frequent guest on his show. I had covered Jackson's molestation trial in 2005 as both a reporter for Inside Edition and legal analyst for all the broadcast networks. When Jackson died I was called upon as somewhat of an expert on his legal and financial conditions. Before long, I was once sitting alongside Larry on his now new and improved Los Angeles set. Much had changed, but much more had remained the same. I was once again given the pleasure of filling in for Larry when he was off. Larry has played a significant role in my career, both as my mentor and as my friend. You never know how one day can change your life. Filed under: LKL Web Exclusive
