Jim Moret: When One Day Can Change Your Life

Posted: 07:36 PM ET

Jim Moret is Chief Correspondent for Inside Edition and he is a frequent guest on CNN and HLN and is a regular guest host of Larry King Live.

I've known Larry King for nearly 20 years. For the better part of a decade we shared a studio at CNN’s Los Angeles bureau. He graciously invited me on as a regular guest throughout much of the OJ Simpson murder trial in 1995.

One night before a broadcast he asked "How would you like to host sometime?" I said, "sure" as you might expect, and I ended up filling in for Larry about 30 times before leaving the network in 2001.

Our paths did not cross again until nearly eight years later. I had just finished the manuscript for my inspirational book "The Last Day of My Life" and I wanted Larry to write a blurb for the cover. I went to Nate'n Al's, the famous Beverly Hills deli where Larry can be found along with his old school pals every morning he is in town. Sure enough, there he was, holding court as usual.

I walked up to him and he greeted me warmly, as if we had seen each other just the day before. Not only was he eager to read what I had written, but I soon saw a hand extended along with a voice saying, "Jim, it's Michael Viner. I still want to buy your book."

Michael had tried a few months earlier to purchase my manuscript but it looked as if we already had another deal in place and we passed on his offer. As it turned out, that deal fell through and Michael's interest was quite welcome.

As you might guess, we did make that deal, and while Michael passed away several months ago after a battle with cancer, I am proud that my book is part if his legacy with Phoenix Books. I am honored to say that Larry liked my manuscript and graciously provided the number one blurb on my book jacket.

News events, beginning with Michael Jacksons untimely death, brought Larry and me together in another way. I soon found myself a frequent guest on his show. I had covered Jackson's molestation trial in 2005 as both a reporter for Inside Edition and legal analyst for all the broadcast networks.

When Jackson died I was called upon as somewhat of an expert on his legal and financial conditions. Before long, I was once sitting alongside Larry on his now new and improved Los Angeles set. Much had changed, but much more had remained the same. I was once again given the pleasure of filling in for Larry when he was off. Larry has played a significant role in my career, both as my mentor and as my friend.

You never know how one day can change your life.

Gee Larry, tell your producer to take off the ticker when you show video (the Las Vegas camera phone video 1-4-09) once in a while. Having an eighth or so of the screen clustered with CNN/Larry King and announcements is annoying. Nancy does it all the time! I'll still watch you though – Love ya Larry.

The attack on Christmas Day did not "fail". He passed the security and got on the plane. The chemicals didn't react as they were intended.

I really enjoy when Mr. Moret is on. He is balanced and fair.

elly   January 5th, 2010 12:11 am ET

just out of curiousity can anyone tell me what Jim moret stood regarding Michael jackson's accusations? I mean did he think he was guilty or innocent? or did he just report?

CORRECTION:

just out of curiousity can anyone tell me where Jim moret stood regarding Michael jackson's accusations? I mean did he think he was guilty or innocent? or did he just report?

I asked my father-in-law how he felt about what was happening when pictures were shown: "It was a shame, instead of people feeling joy and hope at the sight of American soldiers, have become afraid and distrust Americans."

Susan   January 5th, 2010 1:48 am ET

WHY does CNN give Andrea Tantaros a forum? What are her credentials, or experience? She appears to be 22 years old, quite hysterical, and has no sense of perspective, recent history, or fairness in her comments. CNN viewers would prefer a weightier, more experienced and knowledgeable commentator! Thank you.

Connor   January 5th, 2010 5:26 am ET

Dear, Larry

Why don't we introduce the "common sense" party and put political biases aside? We should put some people on air that understand what it would be like to lose a family member or close friend because of "due process" or whatever political talk to protect the lives of innocent people. Times are changing and we have to adapt to what is presented to us. Terrorists are penetrating our current security and we need to make it so that we are no longer afraid to enter an airport because of our current security. Protecting innocent people is more important then following old structures of law that are presented in the Constitution. Lets focus on the real issue which is protecting people who are attempting to live their live without the constant threat of fear.

Another love letter from Jim to Larry...how quaint.

MaryRM   January 5th, 2010 7:27 am ET

let's see, hmmm, back on March 29, 2005, were you a fair and balanced reporter, remaining objective and stating just the facts?

MORET: All of the boys - all of the boys are between the ages of ten and thirteen at the time. Let me just pick up from what Art said, as well, because the boy who`s now a man in his 20s who`s going to testify. The thing that makes him really tough to break is the fact that he`s now a youth pastor. He is married. When you talk about credibility, that`s the person you want on the stand for the prosecution.

This doesn't sound even remotely objective. Chandler never testified, refused. Jim – Your words carried great weight and you were irresponsible with them. You are no better than any of the others watching Michael's lynching; worse, actually, because as both a lawyer and reporter, you should have, been able to be more objective. But I guess, you wanted the gig, so sold out.

Jim, you wrote an inspirational book? You are a hypocrite.

MaryRM   January 5th, 2010 8:05 am ET

In addition to my above post – Jim – I would just love to hear one reporter.... just one..... admit they were unfair to Michael Jackson. In person and on air. Just one. it would probably be too much to also expect an apology to be given to his family and fans for your share of the blame.

Would you do it Jim Moret? Or did you rationalize your behaviour long ago?

Susan from MD   January 5th, 2010 10:07 am ET

MaryRM, I would also like to see or read an apology to Michael's fans and family but, not just from one but from all who slandered his name. I know I'll never forget Nancy Grace's comments or Diane Dimonds words yet both continue to work for CNN. Now, we have another CNN reporter trying to sell us his words. Not to me!!! Michael was correct when he told us not to believe the press.

Victoria J   January 5th, 2010 10:22 am ET

I have to say, I thought Mr. Moret was poignant in remembering and reflecting on Michael following Michael's death. He seemed deeply saddened and had mostly very kind and objective words to say about Michael. However, I have to stand with MaryRM and Susan from MD, in that I watched in horror how those reporters stamped guilty on Michael before he even walked in the courtroom in 2005 and influenced a multitude of millions to believe he was guilty that continues to this day. They, along with the drug pushing doctors have Michael's blood on their hands. They should apologize publicly. It's the least they can do.

Kathleen Lamoureux   January 5th, 2010 2:53 pm ET

I absolutely love Jim Moret! When he speaks I listen. He is always so well composed and his words are so articulate. It is always a pleasure to see him as a guest host on CNN.

Sandy-Houston   January 5th, 2010 3:25 pm ET

"You never know when one day can change your life."

Mr Moret, Michael certainly knew how one day could change a life. The day he was arrested and handcuffed and taken to jail. The day he had to face his family after the charges were filed. The first day being on trial for something he could not even imagine doing. The day the media started with their biased opinions...and never stopped. The day his so called "friends" turned their back on him. And the day he took his last breath at the hands of a physician who was obligated to first do no harm.
Yes, Mr Moret, Michael had many "one thaw" that changed his life. The Last Day of My Life for Michael Jackson was a tragedy beyond belief. I just wish the world knew the real Michael. Maybe then he would also have that "day" where finally he was treated fairly.

Sandy-Houston   January 5th, 2010 3:29 pm ET

Excuse me "one day" that changed his life.

elly   January 5th, 2010 4:15 pm ET

wow, I guess reading the posts gave above now I got my answer. shockingly! these reporters are all the same.unfair and biased.

elly   January 5th, 2010 4:16 pm ET

@ Nicole S. - North Carolina

LOL, it's infact a love letter!

Bobby   January 5th, 2010 10:22 pm ET

I have to say aside of our currently brave and struggling president, I am embarrassed to be an "American". However I have not left for another place because I'm sure that it only gets worse from country to country. I am, in fact, to be honest ashamed of the entire human race, and embarrassed to be a part of it. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU.

Bobby   January 5th, 2010 10:31 pm ET

Another point I would like inject, and if you do not like it, tough, I think that all of these critics, no one has bothered to propose along with their criticisms any suggestions or better plans. Politics are the biggest joke of all time. I mean geez people what a bout the little guy(me for instance), and NO I do not vote because I am more than positive that most elections are just a "MONEY" laundering scam so to speak, meaning that the one with the most money can obviously buy the vote.
I mean look at g.w.bush bought the vote just to avenge his gutless father. So I say, "What is the point?"

Bobby   January 5th, 2010 10:35 pm ET

OH, yeah what about the three minute search for bin laden, I think he is hiding at the bush's homes or supported monetarily by them. If I am wrong, and I am not, I would retract.

Jaspreet Dhillon   January 5th, 2010 11:16 pm ET

Larry,

Not sure what your celebrity guest's point was tonight. Was Ms. Rivers pissed because the airport personnel did their job, even if it was a bit later along their process, or simply angry at her celebrity not helping her get on that plane? I wonder what she would think if a non-celebrity "meeting the skin color profile" simpleton passed unchecked onto a plane with the wrong name on a boarding pass? I'm sure that would be a security scandal, in our current climate, that she may even report on!

Has reporting the news really turned into this sort of nonsense? I'm not a student of journalism so perhaps its just ignorance but is reporting the news not supposed to be based upon facts: the who, what, when, where, why and how? Why has it turned into a medium for sharing opinions disguised as facts?

When will media take responsibility for inflaming events in order to make money or get air time? I think in the current state of trying to one-up the other media outlet, even the likes of CNN have migrated from their core value(s) of reporting the news. At a time like this, when media helps create the news, who keeps you all honest? Where's Anderson Cooper on this one?

Look forward to a honest response....if that's possible!? Best wishes and Happy 2010!

Mrs. Mayes   January 7th, 2010 2:55 pm ET

Even though you removed my comment Mr. Jim Moret still did and awful coverage of Mr. Michael Jackson's death. He was very negative toward Mr. Jackson and it was terrible how he and the Media covered his children. I was also very disappointed in Mr. Larry King to. The Media and Mr. Moret should be put in jail for Child Abuse. These Children will have to grow up in this world and it is a shame the way the Media is still trying to destroy their father. How would you like someone to constantly be printing or saying neagative things about your dead father and you don't even know if it's true. Mr. Jackson children deserves to live in peace! God has given Mr. Michael Jackson his glory now and no one can take that away from him he is the Greatest and All ways will be. Rest in Peace Michael Love You Always!

Prometheus77   January 16th, 2010 4:54 pm ET

Yes, there were reporters that were unfair to Michael Jackson, but Jim Moret certainly is not one of them... whenever I heard him talk he did give a balanced report and kept it real (of course some fans do not want to hear things which are not in favor of Michael, meaning anyone who is not constantly praising Michael is biased).

I got the chance to talk to him in the days waiting for the verdict and he gave a true assesement of the case, not one hint of negativity or bias towards Michael, he even said that he thinks that MJ will be acquitted!

Not all (even though many) people in the media are evil when it comes to Michael Jackson!
