Limbaugh dropped from group seeking to buy NFL team

Posted: 09:27 AM ET

If conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh ever had much of a chance to be a minority owner in a successful bid to buy the NFL's St. Louis Rams, it is now over, two league sources have confirmed to SI.com.

In a statement released Wednesday evening by St. Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts - who is heading the group that hopes to buy the Rams - he announced Limbaugh's official exit from the bid. It is believed that Limbaugh's controversial participation would have doomed the group's effort in the eyes of NFL owners. League sources told SI.com that Limbaugh's candidacy in any Rams bid had "zero chance" of being approved by the league's owners. In his statement, Checketts said Limbaugh's participation had become "a complication and a distraction" to the group's efforts.

According to league sources, Limbaugh comes with too much troubling baggage in terms of his outspoken views that often intersect the divisive issues of politics and race in America. In a time when the NFL is hoping to have complete uniformity among its team owners in anticipation of the tough collective bargaining negotiations to come with the players union, there was little interest within the league to associate with an owner who is paid to give his highly charged opinions on the radio for hours each week.

jennifer ratliff   October 15th, 2009 10:29 am ET

It is so hard to understand WHY a 11 year old couldn't escape and why she would stay 18 years.

jason dallas tx   October 15th, 2009 10:31 am ET

Yes, Jennifer-- Why didn't she TRY to excape???? Staying there 18 years DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE.

Cali MJ Fan   October 15th, 2009 11:59 am ET

YAY! Now if they would just remove him from the airwaves.

MaryRM   October 15th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

His supposed talent on loan from God – well, God is love, and does he ever speak words of love? Or is it more judgment fear and hate? Whose words are those?

Jeri   October 15th, 2009 3:05 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh accuses others of spreading lies about him re: NFL ownership bid instead of taking responsiblity for his own words which is damaging enough. Limbaugh dishes out lies, fear and racist remarks. He is an alarmist and a leader of the ignorant in the USA. What goes around, comes around. Tough beans to Limbaugh, if you dish it out, get ready to eat it as well.

Rush Limbaugh too risky, divisive, inflammatory for the NFL and the African American “Reverends.” But Borak Obama is Ok to lead America after covering the Cross at Notre Dame this past summer before commencing is “Fiercely Unwelcomed” speech. America has spoken.. America speaks.. And nobody has twisted America’s harm to make unwanted statements.

I don't feel one bit sorry for Rush Limbaugh! He's made millions of dollars doing what he's doing. Like him or not, he chose to go that route and rightly or wrongly he is paying the price.

SuzieCanada   October 15th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

Jasmine   October 15th, 2009 7:31 pm ET

YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BUY ANY TEAM IN THIS WORLD..GOOD FOR THE MOTOR-MOUTH..MAYBE RUSH WILL FIND GOD AND BUY A CHURCH....WE DON'T NEED TO GO BACKWARD LIMBAUGH WITH YOUR ENRAGED ATTITUDE....

Mr. King, congratulations on setting up a blog where people can spend their time revealing their hatred. Very sad for the country.

Good Evening Larry King!

Where did you ever find a picture of Rush Limbaugh without his mouth gaping open spewing out all kinds of nasty and racial crap?

Thank goodness for Photoshop!

Well Rush, how does it feel to be finally on the "receiving" end!

Remember the old saying.... what goes around, comes around! If you can't take it, don't dish it out to others!

I think this is hilarious!!! Finally, you get exactly what you deserve!

Dodie ~ California   October 15th, 2009 8:34 pm ET

@ Anne D

I don't know about anyone else, I can only speak for myself. I do not hate RL... I just think he is an idiot and very embarrassing. I know other countries watch his program and completely laugh at all of us for our stupidity!

I guess I am a little sensitive of being the laughing stock of the world because of people like Rush!!!

Michael Jackson’s case has been ruled a homicide for a reason. There is a massive cover-up going on regarding his murder. Please learn the truth at this-is-not-it dot com and get involved.

RL is exactly the opposite of what is positive and civil in our society. Maybe some people like his hateful talk, but I don't. Perhaps he isn't aware that what you send out is what you get back multiplied. (at least on this planet). He has a lot of negativity coming back his way and I hope he is ready for it.
