Bill Clinton: 'Vast right-wing conspiracy' as 'virulent' as ever

Posted: 12:47 PM ET

The "vast right-wing conspiracy" that attacked him during his presidency has been weakened, but continues to operate against President Obama, former President Clinton said Sunday.

On NBC's "Meet the Press," Clinton was asked about the term his wife Hillary Clinton, now secretary of state, famously coined. "Is it still there?" host David Gregory asked.

"Oh, you bet. Sure it is. It's not as strong as it was, because America's changed demographically, but it's as virulent as it was," the former president replied.

"I mean, they're saying things about him [Obama] - you know, it's like when they accused me of murder and all that stuff they did," Clinton said, in an apparent reference to conspiracy theories surrounding the suicide of White House deputy counsel Vince Foster.

"It's not really good for the Republicans and the country, what's going on now," Clinton said. "I mean, they may be hurting President Obama. They can take his numbers down, they can run his opposition up. But fundamentally, he and his team have a positive agenda for America."

The nation needs "a credible debate about what's the right balance between continuing to expand the economy through stimulus and beginning to move back to fiscal balance," Clinton said. "We need a credible debate about what's the best way to get to universal [health care] coverage."

This is just the Republicans doing what they always do, attacking any president in a reform cycle who is trying to make some changes that will benefit the common people instead of big business. There are plenty of Dems that are not much better than Republicans when it comes to that.

Republicans appeal constantly to their Confederate-evangelical base in the South with all the usual flag waving, Bible thumping, playing the Race Card and so on. They've been doing it for decades. If they get back into power, they will do the same things they have always done since about 1882: cut taxes for the rich, let big business do whatever it wants, spend a lot on the military, especially in the South, and generally tell teh ordinary people to sink or swim.

I am not a right winger. I am very middle of the road. I do have questions about the current administrations actions on some things. It's not a conspiracy. It's just regular people concerned about the future of the country. Don't label us conspirators. And to Bill Clinton: you lied about having sexual relations with Monica. Why wouldn't you lie about other things?

Joe G. (Illinois)   September 28th, 2009 3:20 pm ET

You may be well dressed and look presentable in a suit and tie.. But like Borak Obama you advocate/support/promote Abortion and the abomination of family morals. You hear me Clinton..?! Cry.. Whine.. Let me hear about your complaints.. But tell me this.. When you look at yourself in the mirror.. When you look at your wife.. When you look at your beloved Borak Obama.. Who/What do you see? Is it a beast from the depths of hell? Or just a loving considerate/compassionate person who wishes peace in the world and to do no harm?

President Clinton's comments show that he and other anti-war activists during the Vietnam War are in denial. In his comments on Larry King Live he blamed the loss of the Vietnam War on the South Vietnamese people, themselves, for not aligning with the United States in that war. What he didn't mention was that the reason they didn't align with us was because of all the anti-war rhetoric in our Congress and the anti-war demonstrations in our streets urged on by far left college professors. Of course they wouldn't align with us if they thought we would pull out due to American politics.

The U.S. troops in Vietnam won every major battle including Tet of 1968. The war was won on the battlefield but lost in the streets of America and in the Congress of the United States. Even General Giap, the top North Vietnamese general said that. And, proudly so. Because that was his strategy. He sacrificed as many Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops as necessary, simply to increase the casualties of American Troops. He did this even though his own troops suffered far more casualties. He did this to breed dissension in the American people and government. And, it worked, thanks to people like Bill Clinton.

Our government withdrew our troops, not for military reasons, but to avoid increasing unrest at home.

After the suicide attacks by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese during the Tet Offensive of 1968 the increased casualties suffered by Americans was only a fraction of those we inflicted on the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese. In General Giaps own words the American Troops had broken the back of the North Vietnamese army.

Clinton's comments are just another example of how he talks around the truth from "I did not have sex, with that woman" to "It depends on what the definition of 'is' is."

I am a former U.S. Marine captain; Vietnam War veteran; and very Independent.

((( well said )))

I would add just one more little thing. If we continue the path of big business control.... whereby 1% of the population owning 98% of the country's assets.... this will untimately drop us into a 3rd world country. We are already in the process of becomming a 3rd world country.

First we must regulate Big Business control! We have no hope unless we do that first! We MUST separate church from state!

I have pitty on you if you think like that!

Maybe you will do better in the next life!

MR. PRESIDENT, DON'T GET SUCKED INTO A BLACK HOLE IN AFGHANISTAN. SEND NO MORE TROOPS– CUT THE NUMBER BY AT LEAST ONE. YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK TO GET SOMETHING DONE FOR AMERICA. REMEMBER, PRESIDENT JOHNSON; HE FELL INTO A BLACK HOLE IN VIETNAM, AND TOOK THE GREAT SOCIETY WITH HIM–THAT IS WHAT THE DEVIL DAMN
REPUBLICANS WANT TO HAPPEN TO YOU.

INFLATION IS A EUPHEMISM FOR THEFT. It changes the ratio of money to the goods and services being
exchanged, and eats up any new money put into the system–preventing it from doing the job intended.

MR. PRESIDENT, now that you have the stimulus –ask businesses to do their part by lowering all their prices by at least 0.1%.

MR. PRESIDENT, DON'T LET BIG OIL AND BIG BUSINESSES RUN OVER YOU WITH A PRICE MARKER. DEVIL DAMN REPUBLICANS WOULD LIKE TO HAPPEN TO YOU. THEY WON'T SUPPORT HEALTH-CARE, BUT THEY WILL SUPPORT SENDING TROOPS TO THE MOON.

THEY DID IT TO PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER. WE CAN FORGIVE HIM. HE HAD BEEN UNDER WATER
TOO LONG WHILE IN THE NAVY. YOU WILL HAVE NO EXCUSES. LET THIS BE A WARNING TO YOU.
I WILL BE THERE TO SAY," I TOLD YOU SO"!

INTEREST RATES SHOULD BE LOW AND STABLE–BUSINESSES
SHOULD LOWER PRICES– NOT INCREASE THEM

THE UN IS IMPORTANT
We can hear 192 nations tell us who they are, and we
will know them better.
Agreeing with what we hear or not is not important.
To be upset with what one or two members say or do takes a small mind.
There is no requirement of a mind to be a republican. All that is needed is
to know how to say no, and be against everything that would benefit
anyone but the rich. Mr. moore has it right.

TO MR. MOORE
The answer to Capitalism is Mixturism: THE RATIONAL ECONOMIC,ETHICAL,
AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21ST CENTURY AND BEYOND. Businesses,
governments, and people working together to meet the needs and desires
of all. FIND YOUR FREE COPY ON THIS WEB SITE.

WHY DON'T THE DEVIL DAMN BUSINESSES START
PUTTING PEOPLE BACK TO WORK? THEY COULD
END THIS RECESSION NOW!

Bill Clinton is right. Not since the 60's & 70's have I seen SO much hate being spewed by the far-right. The ONLY difference is that the Tea-Baggers are not wearing white robes and hoods!

In 2008, AMERICA REJECTED the VILE politics of the GOP......... we are sick and tired of the GOP's ......lies, fear, hate and division!

The BUSH WARS have been going on for EIGHT YEARS now!

IRAQ ALONE HAS COST, TO DATE, $3 TRILLION!

AFGHANISTAN $864 BILLION.

PRESIDENT OBAMA END THIS MADNESS & BRING OUR TROOPS HOME!

John H   September 28th, 2009 10:36 pm ET

@Earle Richmond.....You are absolutely right. The only adjustment I would make to your comments is that we didn't lose the war in the streets of the U.S.; we gave it away in the halls of congress. When we left South Vietnam to it's own devices, it was with the understanding that we would continue to provide them with the means to defend themselves. Instead, we cut them off entirely which is quite the opposite of what Russia and China did for their clients to the North. I realize that is not the way history is taught in our universities but that is the way it was. I will never accept the argument that we lost that war even though the anti-war crowd is still patting themselves on the back for the heroic way they forced the outcome we faced. Another Vietnam war veteran and another opinion or point of view.

Mark My Words   September 29th, 2009 2:27 am ET

Blah, blah, blah... are you guys so intellectually dishonest that you think that all Repubs are bad and Dems are good. Do a little research on those so-called public servants that you worship.

I once heard a story about a disbarred lawyer who had inappropriate sexual relations in the White House, disrespecting the office, his wife, and his country and then lying about it. That guy had the 911 mastermind in his sights several times and was too weak to take him out. Finally, this guy had pre-planned a trip to a dictator's country to offer up legitimacy to his and the dictator's existence. Too bad the guy just won't fade away.

Mark My Words   September 29th, 2009 2:31 am ET

"They can take his numbers down, they can run his opposition up. But fundamentally, he and his team have a positive agenda for America.”

It's his AGENDA that is causing his numbers to be worse than any other president in this stage of his presidency. And, it's not only your right wing extremists that don't approve of his policies.

Rose   September 29th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

Joe G: You are anti-abortion but did it ever occur to you that without legalized and medically safe abortions women would be having them ANYWAYS as they have in previous decades. They ended up with backroom butchers, thousands of women and their babies died. Those who could afford it flew to other countries and got abortions.

Whether you like it or not, abortions are a reality. If you respect life so much, why can't you respect women's lives? Access to medically safe and legal abortions instead of illegal methods that will definitely occur. Trying to block abortions will continue to kill women, as it has in the past. So much for this continued hypocrisy.

Rose   September 29th, 2009 6:32 pm ET

Some facts: Abortion was criminalized in the US up to 1973. Tens of thousands died from illegal abortions. The conservative estimate of deaths are about 10,000 women per year. In the early 1960s in New York, deaths resulting from illegal abortions accounted for 42% of the maternal mortality rate. After WW II there was a backlash against women's rights and women working outside the home. Central to this was a crackdown on illegal abortion that drove it underground and ushered in an era of tragedy and horror for women.

In 1977 Congress passed the Hyde Amendment banning federal Medicaid funding for abortions for poor women. Shortly after the law went into effect, Rosie Jimenez a student and single mother could not afford a private abortion. She obtained an illegal one and died from infection. There were many other cases.

Women tried to induce abortions by throwing themselves downstairs, ingested, douched with or inserted a variety of chemicals and toxins from bleach to potassium permanganate to turpentine to gunpowder to whiskey. Knitting needles, hooks, scissors and coat hangers were used. Thousands died from poisoning and injury including their unborn children. Sorry to paint such a disturbing picture, but that is what happened.

For any political party or individual to disregard the health of women and what women in particular are subject to would be truly "immoral".
