I agree with PETA. Yes, Vick served his time and now he is out free. But, he does not deserve the right to play professional football and be placed on a pedestal and become a role model to millions of kids. This sends a very bad message to our youth. He is a horrible, despicable person and 18 months in jail will never change that.

carol   August 18th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

could not agree more.

This man obviously took pleasure in torturing & or standing by & watching helpless animals being tortured. You don't participate in this savage cruel behavior for 6 yrs then when caught say "Gee i guess it was wrong, I should have stopped it."

The man got caught, this is the only reason it stopped.

It is unfortunate that punishment for animal cruelty is so light. By the law..yes he has served his time. By human decency he could never serve enough time for what he has done. He obvioulsy has serious mental issues that makes him capable of such acts. The only thing prison probably did for him is make him angrier. The public "i'm sorry tour' is strickly a career move. Hopefully one day for Michael Vick 'what goes around comes around'

Thank goodness for animal welfare society people. PETA, SPCA etc. Don't let Larry's attackes last nite against you discourage you from doing the wonderful work you do on behalf of animals.

Valdene   August 18th, 2009 12:32 pm ET

What do you want him to do for a living? If I am not mistaken he's now a felon, which in the US means that there are lot of jobs which are no longer open to him. Mind you he can work for the media, they have no ethics.

Lana Peck   August 18th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

I am in a profession of saving people from killing themselves. I consider myself to be a deeply compassionate person who cares about people regardless of their deeds. I am sorry to say that I don't feel this way about Vick. I am disgusted with the fact that this person is allowed to speak on behalf of the animals-same beings that he enjoyed torturing and killing. As a mother of 6 cats and a dedicated animal rescuer, I can't find it within myself to want to understand him, to feel empathic about his upbringing. We all have psychological childhood trauma of some sort. As adults, however, we make a choice to act on it. Another piece is that Vick mentioned that football doesn't mean much to him and that he is fully dedicated to the cause of animals. Well, Vick, why don't you give your next year's salary to PETA and other animal rescue organizations to show that your words and your actions match?

Ellen   August 18th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

Based on Michael Vick's words as expressed on 60 minutes perhaps 'talking the talk " could include his contributing a large portion of his Eagles salary as part of a "community service" to PETA. Young men wanting to emulate him might think twice about consequences if loss of money is involved. .

mcpherson   August 18th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

let him be he did his time

Tony   August 18th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

Dog Town is a fabulous organization! I read their website regularly and have followed the Vick dog's in thier care as well as numerous other animals of many types, dogs, cats horses, birds etc. all being rehabilitated at Dog Town. How sad living creatures end up in need of this care.

Michael Vick may return to football, and may do well living the remainder of his life, who knows? But the man's legacy will always include a chapter on abuse of those less powerful than himself. One day it will turn around and bite him on the ars.

Diana Moston   August 18th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

Mr. King,

I saw your segment on Michael Vick last night

Debbie Totten   August 18th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

how can someone hurt an animal you are a cold heartless peice of work have you no heart yes we all make mistakes but you take the cake you know that animals cant fight back yes what goes around comes around and it will come back to haunt you you did the crime but not enough time

Diana Moston   August 18th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

Mr. King,

I saw your segment on Michael Vick last night. I heard you say more than once that since he has paid his debt to society, why shouldn't he be able to play football. He has paid his dept to the government ; he has yet to pay his debt to society. It is easy to talk abstractly about what he did when no matter how hard you may try, you cannot imagine what it is like to watch the pain of a living thing going through torture. If PETA or the ÅSPCA have such a film it would be very instructive for everyone to see it – not only to understand the enormity of his actions, but to fully grasp the psychological makeup it takes to participate in such sadistic behavior. Some time ago Pete Rose was thrown out of baseball for betting and now we have someone who fights, kills and tortures animals who will be making millions after a short time in jail. Jail time does not change ones psychology and "You should treat your animals with respect" are not the words of someone who has learned anything. In our society, any thug or sociopath can do pretty much anything long as they're making money for someone. I'm not saying people shouldn't have second chances but this man has a long way to go before he stops parroting the words of his publicity team and starts realizing, in a profound way, what he really did and the extreme pain he inflicted on innocent, vulnerable animals.

carol   August 18th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

this man is not in the least bit remorsful.

Dogfighting is one thing, killing animals is another (both dispicable of course)

Torture for the sake of watching animals suffer for pleasure is quite another. This speaks to the makeup of this man. He obviously has a sadistic, cruel twisted side to him. It is one thing to kill an animal, it is quite another to drown & electrocute. The pleasure is in watching the suffering because he certainly didn't do it for the money.

His parents must be so proud of their son.

Dress him in an expensive suit, parade him around on talk shows spewing the rehearsed retoric of 'poor me, it was my upbringing".

At the end of the day he is no different then a Jeffrey Dalmer, an OJ Simpson, & every other killer who somehow think they can justify their criminal behavior once they have been caught. You make 1 mistake, you don't make 6 years worth of mistake. Also, since when is torture considered 'a mistake'

nardofree in virginia   August 18th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT. I'M A TRUCK DRIVER. IF I DID THE SAMETHING MV DID , AND WENT TO JAIL, GOT OUT OF PRISON. ARE SOME OF YOU TELLING ME THAT I DON'T DESERVE A JOB AS A TRUCK DRIVER ? HELP ME UNDERSTAND ARE YOU SAYING, I SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO DRIVE ANOTHER TRUCK AS LONG AS I LIVE, BECAUSE YOU'RE ANGRY WITH ME FOR GETTING OUT OF JAIL AND GOING BACK TO MY OLD JOB? IF SO, YOU ARE AS CRAZY AS TWO LEFT SHOES! YOU DON'T GET TO PUNISH SOMEONE MORE AFTER THEY GET OUT OF PRISON. IN MY VIEW, YOU ARE JUST AS HATEFUL AS MV WAS UNTO HIS DOGS!

nardofree in virginia   August 18th, 2009 4:02 pm ET

IF WE ARE TALKING ROLE MODELS FOR OUR CHILDREN , WE ARE FOOLING OURSELVES. HAVE YOU LOOKED AT YOUR TELEVISION LATELY? IN THIS COUNTRY MEN CAN MARRY MEN, SO PLEASE DON'T USE THE ROLE MODEL REPLY IN THIS CASE. IF OUR KIDS NEED A ROLE MODEL, IT SHOULD BE US. THEIR PARENTS.

peter   August 18th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

he committed murder, Mr King !..

Juana   August 18th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

HELLO HELLO. ANYBODY LISTENING?
THIS IS YOUR HISTORY SO I AM SHOCKED ABOUT YOU GETTING SO UPSET ABOUT DOGS. WHILE I LIKE DOGS, I LIKE BLACK HUMAN BEINGS BETTER.

Cali MJ Fan   August 18th, 2009 5:53 pm ET

This topic makes me so sick to my stomach I can't even bring myself to watch the video. I can't believe anyone could do this to animals.

As a football fan, I vow to not watch any games with Vick in them– or even the team and have sent a $5000 contribution to PETA (which I normally think are a bit over the top) to help fund any protests against Vick.

Disgusting Vick– absolutely disgusting!

Deborah-Canada   August 18th, 2009 6:15 pm ET

Maybe they should put this creep in a room with some of the surviving dogs from his sick operation and let them decide what to do with him – I am sure that when they smell his stench, they will do the right thing! Payback time!!!

Givonne   August 18th, 2009 7:37 pm ET

Georgia, you go girl, tell your story!

eJay   August 18th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

Vick served his time for the crime he committed, he can do whatever he please as long as it's legal.

Susan   August 18th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

Whether or not Michael Vick served his time has no bearing over whether he truly learned his lesson. Words do not exist to properly describe what a waste of human life he embodies. He only cried himself to sleep in prison because he was caught, not because of the pure agony he brought to the dogs that fueled his hobby.

He shows no remorse; only relief that this chapter in his life is almost over. How soon before he bankrolls another dogfighting ring? Tick tock. The writing's on the wall.

Juana   August 18th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

WITHOUT SANCTUARY is a book that illustrates whites hanging and burning blacks as your families and children looked on. I have not to this day heard an outcry. DO YOU CONSIDER DOGS BETTER THAN BLACKS? CERTAINLY DOES SEEM THAT WAY.

Juana   August 18th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

Larry, can't you discuss this? It does have merit that whites in this country do not get upset about the killing and hanging of Blacks but do about dogs.????????????????Talk about it.

carol kesling   August 19th, 2009 12:01 am ET

this man should not be given any AIR TIME, he is sorry........SORRY FOR BEING CAUGHT,6 years of this action is UNFORGIVEABLE......NO FOOTBALL, NO WAY EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Terry, TX   August 19th, 2009 12:12 am ET

Juana....the subject is not lynching....stay on the subject.....good grief ...everything is not a race issue....can't even have a conversation without the race card....as a minority I can't stand it when somebody thinks by throwing the race card....they are right or untouchable. Get over it.

It is what Vick did to those poor animals that people are upset about....it was heinous....he did his time... .however in alot of jobs you don't get your job back if you committed a felony. I will leave his judgment to a higher power....I just will never watch him.
By the way PETA opinion....does not mean squat to me....they are just another creepy left freak group.

KG   August 20th, 2009 8:22 pm ET

It really makes me mad that Vick was allowed to declare bankrupcy, keep his multi million dollar estate and now a fat pro football paycheck. He was supposed to pay Best Friends $800,000 for the care and rehabilitation of these dogs. Is the NFL going to garnish his wages???

SLB   August 20th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

I deplore ALL acts of violence! What I learned from the recent interviews is that MV got away with dogfighting once as a child and decided it was OK, denied his participation in dogfighting and was very, very sorry to be caught and punished. I hope he spends the rest of his life being a strong advocate for animals.

Karen   August 21st, 2009 9:10 am ET

Well said, SLB. As a Christian I believe in forgiveness and rehabilitation, but I would be more convinced of his sincerity if he gives a big chunk of his paycheck to Best Friends and other humane organizations, and if he continues to speak loudly and clearly against dogfighting. If anything good can come from this, it would be that the spotlight is on the horrible practice of dogfighting, which has been an "underground" practice in inner cities and rural areas. Let's pressure our legislators for stricter anti-dogfighting laws and more education!

Kim   August 21st, 2009 9:44 am ET

it's hard to know what to feel, say about this. I love animals and I love people – God created both! I am trying with all my heart not to feel hatred for this man (used loosly), but to feel compassion, pity. He's the one that is missing out! All you dog lovers know what I mean. There's no more loyal friend than a dog! If only people could learn from them! My vengeful self says "turn the dogs loose on him and let them inflict the same torture on him as he did on them" but I'm sure his discusting smell would invoke horrific memories for them. So, Best Friends, just keep loving them and hopefully, God willing, they will all find wonderful, compassionat forever homes.

As for the return to the NFL...My family and I are football fanatics! However...media...if you choose to air a game in which he is on the field/sidelines, we will NOT tune in! Shame on the Philadelphia Eagles!

carol   August 21st, 2009 11:03 am ET

Worse then the dog fighting is the torture of the animals that were no longer useful.

The drownings & electrocution of the the animals for pleasure speaks to the sadistic mindset of Michael Vick.

"I made a mistake". A mistake happens once or twice. 6 years of torture is deliberate well thought out actions which would have continued had he not been caught.

Nevermind football. I would not want this man living in my neighborhood. To me he is no different then any other sadistic, cruel, violent criminal. He legally paid his debt to society but he still is exactly the same person he was before prison.

Kathy   August 21st, 2009 11:51 am ET

I am sorry that the NFL does not seem to have a clause that other companies have "conduct unbecoming" but they don't so he is back in football.
His behaviour towards a living creature is abominable and I, for one, do not believe for one minute that he is remorseful – except for the fact that he landed in jail.
Thank goodness for the wonderful work that Best Friends does. If any of you spent any time with some of these wonderful people who have devoted their lives and their pocketbooks to this fabulous place you would understand how fortunate we, and those animals, are to have a sanctuary that cares so much. They do great work.

Barbara Evans   August 22nd, 2009 6:06 pm ET

I keep seeing references to PETA in the comments. Are you aware that PETA called for all the Vick dogs to be killed? I actually called the PETA headquarters and spoke with a representative about their response to these dogs. When I mentioned that 22 dogs went to Best Friends his statement was "that's just going from one cage to another". Obviously he has not been to Best Friends, I have. I was able to view some of the Vick dogs from a distance that is required by the court shortly after they arrived at the Sanctuary. I have been back many times since then and have actually had the pleasure of meeting two of the Vick dogs. I was so upset with PETA's stand I told them to remove me from their mailing list immediately. Of the twelve dogs dogs that went to BAD RAP in Oakland only one or two have not been adopted. Best Friends has had one adoption and another dog out for a court required six month trial period. These are the dogs PETA wanted to kill. Their answer to the dog overpopulation is to kill "because it is kinder". Hello, what about finding a home for them.
HSUS is trying to get Vick to speak to youth about his errors and tell the kids not to make the same mistake as he did. I'm sceptical but time will tell.

SLB   August 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

I agree with you about PETA, Barbara. My understanding is that they generally don't like pit bulls believing it would be kinder to do away with the breed. That's why me and my pit-mix don't support PETA.

I Miller   August 23rd, 2009 2:20 pm ET

I don't see how 18 months in prison can be measured against the horrific cruelty this cruel barbaric person inflicted on these poor dogs. It is easy to say he served his time,BIG DEAL!..as opposed to what? the suffering, and horror these sentient beings went through at the hands of this sub-human AH. There are many, many role models out there in sport that are worthy of the title. he is NOT one of them.He had it all,but it was not enough for him,and it never will be!

jane Q   August 23rd, 2009 4:50 pm ET

There is nothing to like about this man. He is a psychopath...The sadistic cruelty this so called human put those poor dogs through is not the actions of a good person by any stretch of the imagination. A good person loves all living creatures, and does whatever he can to help animal or human, and many of these really good people who go out of their way every day to do good deeds are too often forgotten, and the like of this thug, just because he is a footballer, and has money, his horrific crime is somehow different...Give him time he will never change...psychopaths never change It has never been known to happen, and a person who can inflict pain, and suffering on a living creature, and enjoy it, is a psychopath plain, and simple..No matter how people try to dress it up,there is good, and evil in this world.People that torture, and murder animals are evil!

llond   August 28th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

I felt the same way when I was reading about the PETA comments. PETA and HSUS were both against those animals living. They thought it better to kill them. PETA is disgusting, just like the HSUS. I believe in second chances, but MV has shown no remorse, do I think he deserves a job? I guess, but to be an NFL star and a role model for future generation? Definately not. I am proud of the people who are selling their tickets, just like Best Friends said "instead of tuning in to a Philidelphia game, go volunteer"
