South Carolina governor admits extramarital affair (LKL WEDNESDAY DISCUSSION THREAD)

Posted: 02:51 PM ET

art_mark_sanford_gi(CNN) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, just back from a secret trip to Argentina unknown to his staff or his wife, admitted Wednesday he has carried on an extramarital affair. "I've been unfaithful to my wife," Sanford told a news conference in Columbia, the state capital. "I developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina."

His voice choking at times, Sanford apologized to his wife and four sons, his staff and supporters, and said he would resign immediately as head of the Republican Governors Association. The affair was discovered five months ago, Sanford said.

What do you think?  Sound off.  We'll be discussing this on the show tonight.

He disappears for 5 days and doesn't tell anyone? Was this his way of subconsciously wanting to get caught cheating on this wife?

Margie   June 24th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

Hypocrite. Another fine example of Republican family Values...NOT!

Margie   June 24th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Should he resign from office because he failed to take the required steps to notify the State he was leaving?

Common sense is dead   June 24th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Margie – You are ignorant to say this is a Republican issue. What about your boy Edwards, the biggest hyprocrite to date? Bill Clinton, remember him, Lied and lied some more until the proof was on her dress!! Cheating is not a partisan issue, it appears to be political!!

Margie   June 24th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) now Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC)...all within a week.

Margie   June 24th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

Common sense is dead,

Please remain civil. Stop the name-calling and grow up. Take a cue from your "user name" and try and use some common sense of your own and reread my comments. I never said it was only a Republican issue. Democrats are unfaithful too. It’s the Republican hypocrisy I was addressing. They don't practice what they preach which is strong family values. They don't forgive easily and continually badger Clinton; they bring President Bill Clinton up on the news all the time as a running joke just like you did in your post. They never let him forget his affair and constantly remind the public of it even after all these years and have quite frankly made him a "poster boy". The Republican talking heads need to stop preaching and criticizing democrats who have extra-marital affairs when it continually happens in their own backyard.

BrotherBill   June 24th, 2009 4:37 pm ET

Once agaon, all of the "Mother Teresas and Popes" come out, their own baggage securely hidden, take their turn to play Moral Police! AWOL from work is this guys ONLY issue with anyone other than his Wife,

Tina   June 24th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Larry,
With all due respect to your reporting and Larry king Live, this subject is something the public is simply tired of hearing about. Please kick the trash stories to the side and report on something meaningful. Something very meaningful and important to millions occurred in Washington today...Nick Jonas, Mary Tyler Moore, Sugar Ray Leonard and 150 little children and teenagers, all with type 1 (Juvenile) diabetes testified this morning before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs on the need for funding for type 1 diabetes research. This is the kind of news I would like to see you report about and bring to the forefront of America’s mind.

Margie   June 24th, 2009 4:55 pm ET

Did the taxpayers foot the bill for this airfare to Argentina?

Susie   June 24th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

What is up with these politicians having these affairs lately. Do they think they are above it all? Is the power they think they have an aphrodesiac? They all eventually get caught. That trip that the Gov of So.Carolina took to Argentina sounded awfully fishy to me. What an embarassment to his family!

eJay   June 24th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

Republicans get rid of the ( Party of morals) quote.

Michael C. McHugh   June 24th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

I'm definitely sick of politicians in general, especially ones that always pretend to be so religious and run on "family values"–and then never meet the same moral standards they insist on applying to others. I am a libertarian myself and don't care what consenting adults do, but I am really sick of politicians and political parties demanding that the government always regulate people's private lives, while they are hypocritically doing whatever they want in private.

Susan Silverstein   June 24th, 2009 6:13 pm ET

Who cares that he slept around, that's his wife's business, what is unforgivable is that he could not be found in the event of a true State emergency. He needs to resign or be fired!!

Common sense is dead   June 24th, 2009 6:25 pm ET

Margie – That's cause your boys lie and lie until proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Johnny boy was the biggest hypocrite ever, with his holier than though attitude while not only cheating, but fathering a child while his wife is dying. Billy Boy pointing that finger and lying to our faces. It was classic when they found the proof on her dress!! You poke your fingers at the Republicans, just goes to show what a narrow minded person you are. Anyone who supports their party that strongly is not capable of thinking for themselves. Nope, won't let Clinton forget about it, because he so adamantly denied. As I have always said it's a bipartisan issue, Politicians cheat!

Common sense is dead   June 24th, 2009 6:29 pm ET

Margie – Not all Republicans are Religious. Some of us are Pro choice and agnostic. Taxes are my issue, not abortion. We all know Democrats are tax and spend and will tax every last dime out of our pockets. I personally don't care about their cheating ways, but you can't be pointing fingers at one party while excusing the other.

Mary S   June 24th, 2009 6:33 pm ET

I am very tired of watching these unfaithful men commit suicide in public. Their career is over, but they knew this when they began the affair. They almost beg for exposure, so they can stop pretending that they are something that they are not.

Ron San Bruno, Ca   June 24th, 2009 6:51 pm ET

Boy has John and Kate started a trend .Does this mean Mark will be going on hiatus?

soeresh gobardhan   June 24th, 2009 7:06 pm ET

How come that the past months some US Republican senators and governors who are extremely vocal about family values, had a messy affair with mistresses?

We must not take for granted that what we say we are going to do, that automatically the mindset will support that thought or statement.
If you need a specific output from your computer you need to have the appropriate software that will generate the desired outcome. The same is true with humans. In order to be sovereign, faithful, and honest you need to develop and apply the most appropriate mindset for that.

From science we know that humans have a reactive response and we can perceive that through our five senses. However, there could be another response beyond our senses which is called the toxic response fuelled by a toxic mindset.
That toxic mindset acts just like a computer virus which can be activated by certain triggers from the computer. Once triggered, the computer virus inflates and takes over the whole processing of the computer. In the same way with humans, an toxic mindset that can be triggered by numerous activities in society and inflates itself with more toxic energy and ultimately takes control over the person resulting in a toxic response like that of governor Sanford.

As a mind set specialist, I am of the considered view that I have the answer why this is happening with people. I have described this mindset phenomenon in my recent book: Silent Voices and would like to share this knowledge with your audience.

I do look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Soeresh Gobardhan, MD

Margie   June 24th, 2009 7:30 pm ET

I'm getting a U.S. history lesson...I didn't know who all these cheating politicians were before. Maybe a TV network should have a reality show “I’m a Cheater…Get Me Treatment Options”.

Willie Simpkins   June 24th, 2009 8:05 pm ET

I would like to say please check the stimulus funds given the governor because while fighting it he disappers. Several government offici als are saying infidelity lately.

Is this the way out now ? Or easiest way to steal money without being under watch.

Just wondering. I would love to hear your opinion.

Kyle Horrocks   June 24th, 2009 8:10 pm ET

Re; John McCain's comment about not recognizing a govenmnet that shotss its citizens. what about Kent State? What about Waco,Texas? What about Chicago? He who casts stones, etc.

Matty   June 24th, 2009 8:14 pm ET

I definitely don't agree with cheating but honestly I think this is a personal matter between Gov. Sanford and his family. The man is obviously an excellent politician and his career shouldn't be affected. People in this country are way to involved in each others personal lives. Everyone out there knows somebody who has cheated or not been in love with someone, how many times did that them fired or made them have to quit a job they were good at? I'm willing to bet that two thirds of the politicians out there have cheated at least once in their life.

Matty   June 24th, 2009 8:22 pm ET

I don't believe its just politicians having the affairs, its men in general. By nature men are always thinking and fantasizing about women its just sometimes more men act upon their thoughts, and sometimes it ends up hurting other people. Gov. Sanford went with his heart its unfortunate for his family but this should not ruin his career he worked so hard to build. Simple and plain he just acted on his basic male instincts. I would imagine if he didn't resign and were coming to work tomorrow he would have worked just as hard if not harder for the people.

Greg   June 24th, 2009 8:24 pm ET

What a country. You can have sex in the WHITE HOUSE if you are democratic, no problem and no consequence. But, if you are a republican and have sex (anywhere in the world) you better bring your own cross, so the media can crucify you.

Ken Bertwell   June 24th, 2009 8:24 pm ET

He owes it to the good people of South Carolina to resign right now–no waiting-period! Zip up your pants buddy and hit the road out of DC. You disgust me!!

Matty   June 24th, 2009 8:26 pm ET

For Gov. Sanford to have reached the status he has reached of governor he obviously has excellent political skills. Why should that be taken away because of a mistake the man made in HIS personal life? He needs to work it out with his family, put this issue behind him, and continue in politics doing the great job he has done!

jbrantow   June 24th, 2009 8:53 pm ET

Sorry Common sense is dead
John Edwards didn't stand on a soap box and spew phoney moral values. He didn't cruicify clinton and livingston to resign after their affairs. This was done by your darling hypocrites Sanford and Ensign. GOP lack values and morals.

jbrantow   June 24th, 2009 8:56 pm ET

The rethuglican party....going....going....going.......gone.

jbrantow   June 24th, 2009 9:01 pm ET

Greg doesn't get it....Turn of fox and limbaugh and exercise your neurons. Democrats believe in live and let live....they don't preach phony morals. The repubs spew to live life the way I dictate via "their biblical rules" then break those rules. Hypocrisy is ugly and the rethugs are masters at it.

Tehran, Tn   June 24th, 2009 9:05 pm ET

He cheated and will the same people that wanted Clinton out come forward. Will Oprah say if he cheat once he will cheat again? Will he have to replay the money use to pay for the trips? Will he be asked to step down?

angela   June 24th, 2009 9:06 pm ET

I am sick to God of the time we have to waste listening to this absolutely pathetic confessions of these men and their personal struggles. I do not recall this type of public behavior about marital struggles growing up in this country. Now that the GOP is just a party of Nazi's of course they have to make these dumb confessions, which again make me want to puke.

Gary Chandler in Canada   June 24th, 2009 9:06 pm ET

Is ending up with leaders like Nixon and Bush part of the 'price' of democracy, or is it proof of a flawed system?
Political parties should be outlawed!

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:08 pm ET

Dear Larry,

Is it me or do all men become casanova when their trying to get laid.

angela   June 24th, 2009 9:08 pm ET

More weeping about how it cant be kept in the pants, how pathetic we have to waste our time hearing these stupid confessions. My sin my sin, yadda yadda yadda.......shut up, man up and shut up please.

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:09 pm ET

YES!

MONA   June 24th, 2009 9:10 pm ET

PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE COME ON

HE IS CRYING AFTER THE FACT
HE IS SORRY AFTER THE FACT

SORRY... WONT CUT IT..

jack   June 24th, 2009 9:10 pm ET

I guess sanford isn't against all forms of stimulus. No one would care if these guys were not such hypocrites, calling for other's resignations. I propose the conservatives call their part Grand Old Hypocrites. And how about the issue of possibly stealing state resources , such as the car he used to travel to Ga with, trips to Argentina that were not strictly business etc.? If the South Carolinians can get in such a heat over Clinton and Richards , are they gonna give their own a free pass? Is that the kind of morality that the GOP wants. , Do as I say , not as I do. Also he was scheduled to be a lead speaker at a confernece on VALUES, A favorite GOP hypocrite theme.

Didi   June 24th, 2009 9:12 pm ET

Larry:

I have a question, based on what Governor Sanford said about how this relationship started. Is it possible that this relationships began online. He said it started with a few emails, so does this mean that he was engaged in some online chat room? Does anyone know how he met this woman? That's relevant to me because if they met online this was not an "accidental relationship", maybe he was out looking which means it may have not started so innocently after all.

MONA   June 24th, 2009 9:12 pm ET

MY GOD IS EVERYTHING A BIG HOLLYWOOD SCENE

HE COULDNT KEEP IT IN HIS PANTS

GEEZ

I AM SO TIRED OF THIS

ISNT THERE OTHER THINGS TO DISCUSS ON TV
OTHER THAN THIS

Vicki Melton   June 24th, 2009 9:13 pm ET

Boy is this the good ole boys club tonight. The only thing this governor regrets is he got caught.

gqduchow   June 24th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

No one is perfect, until you walk in their shoes , it is their life. I don't condone this, but he doesn.t have to answer to anyone but his wife and sons.

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Why do many white americans find a little extra excitement in a latin woman that just makes them lose common sense. On the other side Im actually a latino man and ive falling head over heels for a white woman. Go figure right

And on that note....

Does no one realize that We have Nixon on tape stating that if he met Obamas Mama, he would have advised her to abort.

Just saying...

You all should really be careful while riding the middle...way to go Media!

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

Dear Larry,

I loved it when Big Ben Drank, while carvel said. "Dont get Caught!"

Carmella   June 24th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

It is what it is. Short term pleasure for long term humilation.

angela   June 24th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

There is plenty to discuss besides this. They have to make these idiotic confessions. Why, because they are the HOLIER than thou party now. They are so stupid, they play this card and then accuse everyone else of sins and it explodes in their face...

Andrea   June 24th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

First of all, Sanford should be giving explanations to no one BUT his wife. PERIOD. Second, press should not be allowed to ask such personal questions – it is none of their business.

There are issues out in the world that are really important, not this petty issue.

Joanne Tomarchio   June 24th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

Ben Stein is absolutely correct to refer to Gov Stanford as "nuts." Obviously the Governor is not clever enough to have affairs outside his marriage because he doesn't realize that cheating does not exist until someone gets caught! So he confesses? Was there a possible blackmail issue related to his confession?

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:22 pm ET

Dear Larry,

I kinda feel you and your guest should be playing cards

BTW doesnt it feel kinda weird... to have to talk about this when all we wanna do is give the advice

jack   June 24th, 2009 9:24 pm ET

Oh , and another old Republican saying "it is not that he did it, he LIED about it." He told them he was hiking, not taking the state car to Atlanta, catch a plane to an illicit rendevous on another continent. On Father's Day, besides, now that really speaks to Republican hypocritical values!!!

Cecilia Riley   June 24th, 2009 9:24 pm ET

Larry,
I just can't understand why Gov Stanford is so sorry now, after the fact. Does this mean that he did not realize that what he was doing was wrong until AFTER he was sexually satisfied ? !! Did he not think about "all the people" he was hurting until after he returned from his tryst ? It's the same as gorging at Thanksgiving, and feeling awful afterwards, and vowing to go on a diet–after you are full. Are you kidding me? He knew better, knew the consequences, and did it anyway, figuring he would be forgiven if he cried hard enough. Give me a break !!

Carmella   June 24th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

The Republican Party brand is moral accountability. Lately the list continues to grow with a lack thereof. The Republican party brand is we are better than everyone else however; Republicans are no better than anyone else. The party needs to recognize and be more inclusive vs exclusive. The Republican Party has dirt just like everyone else.

angela   June 24th, 2009 9:27 pm ET

It would nt do anything to those boys if he were to shut up and deal with his love life privately, what crap.

Dalia Augunas   June 24th, 2009 9:27 pm ET

Dear Mr. King,
We have tragedies happening in Iran, women dying for freedom, and human rights, ppeople demonstrating against dictators.
I find it very distasteful that you are discussing politician's love affairs and laughing about this personal tragedy. You forgot that his wife and children could be watching.
It woulld be much more meaninggful if you would discuss how we could help Iranian people.
sincerely,
Dalia Augunas

Ruth Fralick   June 24th, 2009 9:28 pm ET

Why is it that all of the Senators, Governors etc that have had affairs, the people fo the United States feel that they have to resign when Clinton LIED to the American people about his affair and he just continued to be our President?

jack   June 24th, 2009 9:28 pm ET

Resign NOW ! That is what you prescribed for others. Aren't you going to do what you advised others to do? Or are you the vile hypocrite that is going to try to ride this out, showing that you are a phony?

Marty   June 24th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

Why won't you drive home the hypocrisies of all these so called moral Republicans, all of which were clamoring for Clinton to resign for what he did?

Rick   June 24th, 2009 9:32 pm ET

Stanford should resign. If he wasn't satisfied with his married life he should have got a divorce and then it would have been somewhat acceptable.

Connie in Manassas   June 24th, 2009 9:32 pm ET

I believe that no one is sorry for what they do, they are sorry they are caught. Had Mark Sanford not been photographed at the airport this morning, there would be no news conference, he would simply state he was hiking. And the fact that he drones on and on and on in the news conference, isn't that in itself a bit narcissistic?

adeolu   June 24th, 2009 9:32 pm ET

It is unfortunate that politicians put themselves in these shameful situations. But saying that because they are public figure they should be immune to these acts is baseless. They are public figure and they have chosen to put shame on the side to come out in the same medium that they are known to reveal their secrets. This is one reason why i think comparing them to individuals differs. They are public figures and when they chose to come in public to expose themselves, in my opinion, they should be forgiven.

angela   June 24th, 2009 9:34 pm ET

We the public want to puke, we must confess we have let our politicians down, we have let all government down, but we want to PUKE. we are sorry, we hope our puke is not nasty and offensive.

Sandra Crowe   June 24th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

It amuses me that Americans make such a todo about this. Americans give the impression of purity when they are not. Europeans laugh at Americans because of this hypocracy.

So glad his wife did not stand next to him while he was "confessing." Seems so ridiculous for the women to do that. She was not there. He seems to have obviously fallen in love – it happens but to happen to Republicans – whoa. This man should RESIGN – NOW!!!!

PS: Larry, please stop referring to Levi as fiancee. There was no ring. Why try to put respectability on this guy screwing an underage girl?

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:36 pm ET

Dear Larry,

That truly does suck guys, everyone will judge you whether you try to do the right thing or when you get caught doing the wrong thing.

I'll drink to that

jack   June 24th, 2009 9:37 pm ET

I hope we will finally be through with GOP and so called moral majority types lecturing anyone else about family values. If they do you have the absolute right to laugh in their face.

Pat, Miami   June 24th, 2009 9:37 pm ET

I think it says it all that he ran to his mistress when his wife threw him out. His wife is a fool to take him back. Pat, Miami

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:38 pm ET

Dear Dr Saltz,

Is this life all that has to offer me...lol

I asked that same question Dr. you really understand me.

angela   June 24th, 2009 9:39 pm ET

whats a "sparking thing"

Charles Strand   June 24th, 2009 9:40 pm ET

It's a shame that so many are so quick to judge. People make mistakes, relationships change and marriages end. it has little or nothing to do with his qualifications as Governor.

Bill Clinton cheated on his wife and was re-elected by a huge majority. JFK and may other popular elected officials had affairs and went on with their careers... so should this man.

Charles

Carmella   June 24th, 2009 9:40 pm ET

Reality is the man can't go any further than the woman allows. She is as equally responsible. "Just Say No" and I am not talking about drugs.

chakesta   June 24th, 2009 9:40 pm ET

AS OF TODAY I THINK MARK SANFORD SHOULD JUST GO HOME AN ENJOY HIS LIFE HE IS LOST ALOT OF TRUST.THEY MADE BILL CLINTON GO SO SHOULD HE.

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:41 pm ET

Dear Larry,

You should tell senator Palin that Fishing is a great sport aswell.

angela   June 24th, 2009 9:41 pm ET

I really like Roberts commentary.

Pat, Miami   June 24th, 2009 9:41 pm ET

People in positions of power must be held to a higher standard. If they are arrogant enough to have an affair when they are in the public eye what are they willing to do to hide it. Blackmail is a real issue that must be considered. Pat, Miami

Jayne   June 24th, 2009 9:41 pm ET

Larry,
Mark Sanford should resign as Governor of S.C. I am speaking as a citizen of S.C. What he did to his family is inexcusible, however, it is between his family. But leaving and lying and not telling the state that he is gone is grounds for his resignation. If I worked for a company and disappeared for 5 days without notice, when I returned I would be fired. Doesn't matter that I was in Argentina, I would be fired and he should be as well. He left the citizens of S.C. without a leader. The Lt. Governor had no idea he was gone. If something catastrophic had happened in this state, what would we have done, no one knew where he was!!! THat Mr. King is why Mark Sanford should not be the governor of my state.

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:41 pm ET

Dear Dr. Drew,

Is it the stimulation that drives people or the security?

Jo Ann   June 24th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

Maybe these old guys should just lay off of the Viagra.

Carmella   June 24th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you. Sexual addiction is a spirit that is not of God. It's the lust of flesh. Read the word and you will most definitely learn something,

chakesta   June 24th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

THIS IS SO HURTFUL TO THE PEOPLE OF MYRTLE BEACH SC ITS JUST NOT CALL FOR THIS IS THE MOST SC BEEN TALK ABOUT

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

Dear Larry,

You just outted Michael, wrong dude...

but thats my entertainment!

Your the Best!

Jo Ann   June 24th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

I am tired of all of these stupid excuses. They are adulterers that are willing to drag their families through the mud to fulfill their selfish desires.

Stephen Webb   June 24th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

More than say, A mailman? What did you mean by that Larry? I'm a mailman, and I watch your show daily! Did you mean politicians are more easily swayed to cheat than mail carriers? I don't understand!

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

Lets face it... we all need to test drive cars before we buy them and remember we always want the newest ride out there.

I once told my ex wife...

Dont ever be called a trophy wife! Why she asked? I told her, " ...you ever meet anyone with just one trophy?"

Keep up the great work America

Connie in Manassas   June 24th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

Another interesting point is he mentioned his wife a couple of times flatly, yet when he spoke of the history of his mistress, it was almost like he was daydreaming, reliving the entire thing. Sad.

Jace   June 24th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

Love how this brought out 10 years worth of clips of male Politicians apologizing for infidelity all the way back to Pres. Clinton. The expert panel brings up some great points about relationships and responsibility but before we continue to demonize men, can someone point out the fact that staticstically speaking, women cheat more than men. Does anyone know what the Gov's wife is up to when she say's she's going to meet up with the sisterhood of the traveling pants club?

Didi   June 24th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

I agree with those of you who say that affairs are between the spouses and the "third parties". That being said, the real reason he should resign, to give his family the peace they need as long as he's governor the famiy will continue to be hurt. He should also resign because he went AWOL. He abandoned his state to have an affair. He needs to move on and allow the people of South Carolina to move on. He had his chance, he blew it. Such is life!

jack   June 24th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

Oh, now they are trotting out the old sexual addiction excuse. Breathing is an addiction. Eating is an addiction. Where was this excuse when the Dems, who usually do not lecture us on moral issues and pass as many repressive laws (though there are a few exceptions) were caught in affairs? This should be their own business, but what makes it ours is when these hypocrites have the audacity to lecture and legislate their "morality" Now they should understand that we are all human, and stop trying to represent themselves as paragons of virtue. Ank keep their lying mouths shut about other people's values. It is obvious, or should be, they have no right to cast stones. Time to quit trying to legislate morals that does not harm others. High time.

charlotte   June 24th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

Larry – its about choices, I chose to be faithful. I chose to remain with the man I married. I love him, he is a good husband and father. We do have to understand that it is also their relationship and it is never my place to judge their relationship. In the end he will have to answer for his actions, no one else.

Victor   June 24th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

Dear Larry,

A woman who has a sexual addiction is called a winner.

BlaqOps   June 24th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

The issue here is not whether or not Gov. Sanford should resign because he had an affair.. The issue here is he is a Gov., and he goes awol without notice? If I were to go on the lam without notifying my employer it would result in my pay being docked (at best), or my termination (at worst).

He must be placed on some type of probationary time out. I'll give the Gov. one thing, I don't ever recall hearing him getting on the moral high horse, therefore, the affair is a private matter which "should" only concern him and his family.

jack   June 24th, 2009 9:51 pm ET

Dear World,

Media is truly downplaying the intense threat of a nuclear war on the horizon. Really! Wake up after all this sex addict stuff and stock up on water and canned goods while there still affordable.

Just a heads up

This Gov isn't done lieing yet.

The State Newspaper of SC had emails that he wrote to this woman and she to him since Dec 08.Apparently they were waiting to catch him which the reporter that reported this went to GA and waited for him to come of the flight.
He was shock to see the reporter and when she ask him about Argintina he told said a few words that he knew she knew than this morning spoke to the news media that he was hiking another Lie.
Later at 2pm is when he spoke to the news media. To listen to him sounds like he was telling the story of Senator Ensign mixing it up.He stated the affair started last year.Ensign said his ended last year.
This Gov said she was married and split up at the time and Ensign said he and his wife was spit up at the time of his affair. On and on and On.

He is doing exactly what Senator Ensign is doing. He'snot dropping down as Gov unless he's told to.This is exactly what Senator Ensign stated. When Ensign went to the GOPs lunch he was aplauded

He also stated he spoke to his staff when in fact no one knew where he was not even the staff.

Bottom Line the lieing isn't done yet.It sounds like a story of Senator Ensign with him in it.

The Very Bottom Line is these same GOPs have been telling the people that it's President Obama that ones should watch out for.
Seems that the cards are falling for the Republican Party one by one.

Dave Rudd   June 24th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

Larry
What is Sanford doing that's so reprehensible?

Connie   June 24th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

Finally, a politician admits to an affair, and his wife isn't standing up there with him.

Charles Strand   June 24th, 2009 9:58 pm ET

Maybe if his wife was supporting him and tending to his needs, he wouldn't feel compelled to look elsewhere. There are two sides to every "adultery" story. Sometimes people just change in different directions and no one is at fault.

All this self rightous talk about honesty is disturbing. None of us are completely honest with our spouses or anyone else. Is lying about a relationship worse than lying about anything else?

The man took good care of his family for years and years, still is. He is at least entitled to a second chance and some privacy.

"Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone...". It sure won't be me!

Charles

tob ie   June 24th, 2009 10:01 pm ET

reading against the grain of those present, it appears that
there is a dominant dyadic narrative of scarcity/abundance.

why, for example, is a so-called meaningful relationship with more than one person diminishing (necessarily) of the primary partner in other situations, of course, where there is consensual open-ness in the marriage or relationship, however defined.
in this context, by meaningful relationship, i mean that one is willing to contour one's current life path to support the relationship in an ongoing way.

i get that also at issue with public officials (and everyone else) is integrity and reverence. i also get the walkin' one's walk aspect that is blown away by lying to one's intimates. that said, if one is lying to oneself, that person can only but lie to everyone else - everyone.
this person deserves our compassion - just as we each most need the magically transformation gift of self-forgiveness. each breath is an opportunity to change one's life forever.

i am somewhat surprised at the entire absence of alternative family organization that involves the conscious weaving of multiple relationships simultaneously - and, i am not necessarily referring to the dominate cultural narrative of the modern, american polygamist, and waco, for example. i am, however, also including in this use of "multiple relationships" the existence of multiple children, possibly from different partnerings, both within and without of the primary caregivers bloodlines.

maybe the spot was too short to open the discussion (ha!)

jack   June 24th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Many of us are not that concerned about these affairs, as the person suggested most Americans are. What concerns some of us is that they try to push their morals down other people's throats through statements and legislative initiatives. IT is the HYPOCRICY, not the thing itself. Grand Old Hypocrites

Linda   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

I find it very offensive that your guests (and you Larry, too) seem to think that cheating is ho hum. How inconvenient for you men that some of us believe this behavior is hurtful and damaging to spouses and family, especially children. You all sounded like a bunch of teenage boys sitting around in a locker room. So, if we have reached the stage in our society where we are to believe and accept that all men cheat, and that it's perfectly normal, why bother with marriage and children at all? With all the current problems of the world, it was distasteful of you to air this program. I would think CNN could find something more importance to report on ibesides this selfish man's game. CNN used to be a good news source. Soon you'll be no better than Fox News.

jack   June 24th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Well, at least we do not have to worry about him ever being President, now. Just think, Commander in Chief disappears to undisclosed on another Continent, and doesn't leave anyone in charge , in case of emergency. Also having an affair with someone on another continent, while trying to cover it up with absurd lies, does not indicate someone who is a brillian strategist. Aside from the trustworthiness issue, that would be of grave concern. He is complicated emotionally , I will give him that, and probaly has the heart of a poet. Not a good lier though.

Cathy Burks   June 24th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

I believe that the general public (common citizens) do not find what happened to the S.C. Governor and his family today (concerning his affair) important, what was important was the fact he did not inform State Officials of his leaving the country. He really never discussed that issue, which I felt was much more important than his affair! I could care less what he &/or his wife does, that is between the two of them.

Judith   June 24th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

Ones feel that he is an odd duck and the Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina who is a republican isn't too happy with him nor was he before this happen.

jack   June 24th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

I guess the guv didn't want the stimulus to help his low income people in SC. But he sure did like another type of stimulus.I guess he is human too, not the great speaker on values and moral paragon we are supposed to believe. The more of these hypocrites that are elected officials that are exposed, the more honest society we can have , with less laws against victemless crimes, that certain hypocrites like to pass.

shenygirl1   June 24th, 2009 11:27 pm ET

Sanford must resign immediately. This sanctimoneous hypocrite preached family values and had the audacity to refuse money for his state from the stimulus package which would have helped the unemployed, homeless and the indigent. As a true believer in conservative values, he was one of the Republican legislators calling for Bill Clinton's impeachment in 1999. Watching those old film clips of Sanford attacking Clinton's morals and veracity made my blood boil. I hope the South Carolina residents have the tenacity to demand the resignation of this deceitful politician and not fall for his phony crocodile tears.

Kevin   June 24th, 2009 11:29 pm ET

You see that Republicans are real men. They are having to many women. It's hard to say something bad about Republicans because most are striaght and women want straight men. Many Democrats never get caught cuz lots of those men go the other way. Being straight is hard and then you get all the Democratic girls and then you having to sex with all thier girls also. It's hard being a Republican.

Mike   June 24th, 2009 11:34 pm ET

My husband and I were married in Vancouver, BC, in September of 2003. Yet, the US or individual states do not recognize our marriage. Our own state now recognizes "domestic partnerships," but it requires us to "re-register" our relationship; this is not done for mixed-gender couples. Same-gender couples need to re-register from state-to-state; it's like collecting state memorial quarters!

And then we read the news:

Democrats who can’t control or channel their libido? Republicans who support DOMA and vote against gay marriage, and then violate their own marriage vows?

Maybe we need new logos for the two parties, to replace the donkey and elephant….rabbits for the Democrats; hippos (for hypocrites) for the Republicans !

Tony Cruz - Willingboro NJ   June 24th, 2009 11:48 pm ET

Polititians & Religious leaders apologizing for infidelity after being caught . Don't trust them, their hypocrisy never recesses to amaze me.

valerie   June 24th, 2009 11:50 pm ET

and they say Republicans are conservatives? The Republicns do more sinning then any other party but yet try to hide behind religion. What a joke they are.

Rich   June 25th, 2009 12:26 am ET

You have to be seriously kidding me. How much abuse have the neo-cons heaped on Senator Kennedy for an accident that happended......what over 30 years ago........give me a break!! and Stanford voted to impeach President Clinton!!

No sympathy for being "stupid"!!

anon   June 25th, 2009 12:28 am ET

Anyone spare a thought for 'Agentina' who is probably crying too.

How come mistresses clinton, edwards, stanford et al., remain more discrete than the spouses? Is it because they are threatened?

Elden Schneider - Baltimore   June 25th, 2009 12:35 am ET

So far tonight I have not yet heard a single newscaster mention the fact that Mark Sanford's "indiscretion" occurred over Father's Day weekend, an ommission that provides the final nail in Mr. Sanford's moral and political coffin, given his hyporitical devotion to his four sons!

jkinchicago   June 25th, 2009 12:37 am ET

Good bye and good riddance. These people are a joke. Not for being human but that they think we are so stupid. His morality is his own business but when he took a public office he was supposed to be devoted to the public not his pants. I hope his wife gets it all and he can go off to Argentina and live his silly life in his silly way. Most people understand marriages gone bad but the lengths he went to in order to cover up-again how stupid did he think SC voters would be. He cared more about his other woman than he did the taxpayers. Public officials don't get to have the same kind of private life as the rest of us-that's part of the bargain-these are not rock stars or movie stars. They are public servants-these officials are supposed to be thinking of us-so we can stay a free nation.

Dodie ~ California   June 25th, 2009 12:42 am ET

How can they justify the extra circular sex when these are the same people that pushed to Impeach Clinton! This just amazes me how they can justify this behavior when 9 years ago they challenged Clinton!

Karen Adair   June 25th, 2009 12:47 am ET

I'm sick of this (Gov. Stanford) being discussed as 'sexual addiction'. I had an affair of the heart 20 years ago, and it had nothing to do with any kind of sexual addiction. It was all about living with an abusive husband who did not fulfill my emotional needs!!!!!!

Stephen   June 25th, 2009 12:47 am ET

Very one-sided panel, a bunch of judgemental phonies. This is not just about morality. Poor guy may have not getting his emotional needs met at home. It's too easy to blame reckless behavior. Can anyone on your panel suggest a more intelligent insight as to the possible root cause??

Mark Goulston, M.D.   June 25th, 2009 12:48 am ET

To err is human,
to take full responsibility for it,
face and pay all the consequences,
is divine

We and Governor Mark Sanford may never know why he did what he did? It’s unclear if we or Bill Clinton ever figured out why he did what he did or Eliot Spitzer or yadda, yadda, yadda…

But what is clear is the “rubbernecking” that this story is causing as if people are watching some roadside disaster. The attraction may be that the exposure of Sanford’s immoral, is causing waves of anxiety among the not-yet-caught men who are flirting with similar disasters and the women who love them. It has been a bad few days for denial.

I can imagine millions of men who have been cheating on their wives through prostitutes or mistresses or tip toeing into their dens and home offices to lose themselves in the world of pornography, scurrying around to erase phone numbers and delete computer files and swear to themselves that they will never engage in such behavior again.

I can also imagine these men looking more guilty than usual and raising the suspicions of their wives.

Finally I can imagine volatile confrontations taking place that are finally exposing marital infidelity of one form or another.

If such activities are exposed, can the damage be undone? Once trust is broken by betrayal, can it be regained?

There is a road back, but it takes practicing the 4 R’s to respond to the 4 H’s you triggered in the other person by betraying their trust.

The 4 H’s and the 4 R’s:

1. To ease the HURT you need to demonstrate REMORSE to show that you know you damaged something in them, by looking them directly in the eye and admitting you’re truly sorry, with no excuses (this is the stumbling block for very narcissistic people and something Bill Clinton had trouble with during the Monica situation)

2. To respond to the HATE you need to show RESTITUTION and offer a payback for what you took away from them by giving up something that matters to you or letting them verbally punch themselves out at you for making them feel crazy
while you lied to them

3. To lower their HESITATION TO TRUST you need to REHABILITATE yourself to let them see a new way of dealing with those situations that caused you to stray and that you actually prefer to your old destructive behavior

4. To get them to stop HOLDING ONTO A GRUDGE, you need to REQUEST FORGIVENESS after practicing those 3 R’s for a minimum of 6 months so they can become a part of your personality

If the other person is still unable to forgive you after that, you are no longer unforgivable (if you haven’t gone beyond betrayal into abuse), they are unforgiving.

It’s clear what is in it for you if they forgive you, but what’s in it for them? When you earnestly practice the 4 R’s above, you enable the person you injured to go from fear and loathing to feeling safe, trusting and even liking you again—and that feeling is called, “euphoria.”

Dodie ~ California   June 25th, 2009 12:49 am ET

These senators/governors/etc, should be treated the same way Clinton was treated. They should end up in front of the Grand Jury!!!

Stephen Webb   June 25th, 2009 12:54 am ET

The GOP wanted to lynch Clinton, but SOMEHOW this is different!

Conservatives want to drop this and talk about something else!

Republican or democratic...these guys are human.

But what Bush did to this country...any Republicans want to talk about that???

Besides blame all of Bush & Dick's mistakes on Obama!

Diane Kirse   June 25th, 2009 1:12 am ET

I watched his interview and he does not sound very sincere in his apology to his wife and children. I am so sick of these women "standing by their men". At least his wife has kicked him out. He needs to go ahead and do what he wants to do which is divorce his wife and go on with the Maria woman that he is in love with. It was clear to me during his statement and by the emails that have been reviewed that he really wants to be with this woman. To say that he made a mistake and feels bad for what he did is BS. What he is sorry about is that he got caught. If I were his wife, all his stuff would be out on the driveway.

Dawn   June 25th, 2009 3:22 am ET

Larry,
Hypocrite...hypocrite... Sanford... the Republican party boasts family values...
Then come the exceptions: Chaney's daughter– , Sanford, etc...
It's like the Catholic church with birth control.. let's deal with the reality of situations and teach ourselves and our children– BE A RESPONSIBLE ADULT, ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR ACTIONS!

Elmer Gantry   June 25th, 2009 4:16 am ET

Let's all tune in to watch the pot call the kettle black. The first part of the show looked like a good ole boys' night out. And watching Ben Stein show up to proclaim "let him have his affair and live it up for awhile" and "my heart breaks for the guy" and how stupid the governor was getting caught at something so mundane as an affair. And "not just the heart but the other parts too" har har. Guess this was a panel of experts after all. These men have no shame. (I didn't watch the rest of the show with the psychologists because I'd had enough.) And check out Sanford's record on condemning Clinton and other politicians. He ran an ad in 2002 on family value starring his wife and kids. What a bunch of hypocrites. May they all choke on their Viagra.

Jana   June 25th, 2009 5:55 am ET

Just watching the discussion about Gov. Sanford.

You really don't have anything more important to talk about?
What is there to ponder about anyway?

Fact 1: Men have affairs, always will.
Fact 2: Yes, he is a public figure, but it's up to his wife to decide how it will affect their marriage. None of our business.
Fact 3: He is incredibly stupid. Therefore: fire him!
Fact 4: He dissapeared from his job for a week. Therefore: FIRE HIM!

What would happen to my job if I dissapear for a week without any explanation - I would lose it! Simple as that.

als   June 25th, 2009 8:14 am ET

SC Gov. did not want to help the citizens of his state he wanted to take a trip with the tax payers money so he could spend time with his mistress. GOP party wants to spend tax payers money on themselves and not on the problems the United States are having right now. Thats why they are the party of no and no ideas because they dont care. What ideas are they giving to the Pres besides I dont like your idea? The marriage is over thats why she did not say anything . She is trying to help him save his career. This cheating has been going on for sometime now. He took this trip to clear his head which head?

vallary   June 25th, 2009 9:20 am ET

I wish for once the women that in these men's lifes would step up and kick them out. I have seen high profile women stand by their man. THEY haven't stood by you or children. The SC governor should be so a shame of his self. I don't care what the deal is between him and his wife, but there are 4 SONS involved in this game playing. I wish adults would act like adults and take responsibly for their familes, 20 year marriage, 4 sons a 2 terms. I hope it was all worth it in the end. I hope she (wife) and people of SC kick to the street. And grow up on your time. Not everybody eleses

street smart   June 25th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Lets face it Gov. Sanford does what every other politician does, he cheats on his wife. I'm quite sure the right wing religious nut jobs are full of outrage and condemnation about his infidelity and will lean on him to quit his job. The rest of us could care less but heres the rub: the guy's family knows he has to sometimes stay late after hours to get alot of stuff done for his state, which he actually does from time to time. That gives him 5 days (and 5 nights) to have a booty call. Why didnt he answer the "call of the wild" during the work week instead of on Fathers Day weekend? He is incredibly stupid for not strategizing better than what he did. If the guy is that stupid and cant use common sense to plan ahead then how can he make the tough calls in his state or even the country for that matter? Better he should step down, the GOP have enough stupid politicians as it is. Neeeeeext!

Salister O'Daye   June 25th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

Larry King,

As a young man you must have been arrested, why? I seen a mug shot of you as a younger man, please do tell what you were arrest for?

eJay   June 25th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

Has anybody ever confessed without getting caught first.

Linda R Austin, Texas   June 25th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

I am very disappointed that coverage of the Sanford story seems to be concentrated on the deails of his affair. Yes his hypocrisy about the affair and family values is an important point, but the focus should be on Sanford's betrayal and arrogance in failing to fulfill his solemn responsibilities as governor to the people of South Carolina. Sanford has not resigned, and says he will "let the chips fall where they may".

Larry, will he be paid for the days he was AWOL from the state? What if a hurricane or tornadoes had threatened the state during this time? Would he have even known or cared in his love nest in Argentina? Where is the public and media outrage for his neglect for the people and well-being of South Carolina? Why is the media concentrating mainly on the sexy emails, while overlooking the man's careless abrogation of his responsibility to the common good? It is not a matter of simply forgiveness; what the man did was no doubt illegal and in opposition to his sworn oath of office. Furthermore, his situation is different from Bill Clinton's: our national executive never disappeared AWOL from the country and shed his sworn responsibilities.

eJay   June 25th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

The only thimg he has done for South Carolina is to set them back thirty years.

Jerry   June 25th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Larry,

I have said over and over time for a new party buyt us as simple minded Americans cannot come up with this Idea. Maybe we get someone from the center of these two parties and come up with a way. The money is there and we have to have the brains to do this. Have the people read this and come up with their thinking, just a common american.

Jerry

Timo   June 25th, 2009 6:49 pm ET

Larry, I love your show! If we keep on pin pointing all our politicians for sex, I am sure soon we are going to run out of them and hopefully the world will get better place.

Mimi in Atlanta   June 25th, 2009 8:26 pm ET

What job in America would allow an employee to go AWOL for 5 days and not terminate their employment once they came back to work? The fact that this Governor had an affair is irrelevant. The fact that he shirked his responsibility and went AWOL should be grounds for removal from office without a doubt!

Phebe   June 25th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

It's time for all my ladies to take a stand and say that we're not going to tolerate this crap anymore. I swear everytime a lady tells me she is going to get married I privately mourn.

All straight men require bottles and pacifiers. It's sickening. My best advice to any ladies planning on getting married out there, do not do it, unless you enjoy cleaning up after grown men 24/7.

The hell with men and all their little needs. They are designed to be weak.

Cerissa   June 25th, 2009 11:51 pm ET

Joe of San Antonio.- I have followed the conversations and see that you have critiqued others faults....Do you have any? Just curious.

The greatest entertainer of all time and the best there will ever be. There isn't one artist in the world that had a career span 45 years and still have millions upon millions of adoring fans – people who came after him for having a heart should be ashamed of themselves, absolutely ashamed and disgusted – You know who you are. His music will live on forever. We love you Michael – Rest in Peace

The stupid Gov. from S.C. needs to get gone.!!!!!!

janette   June 26th, 2009 1:16 am ET

Oh yeah.....he can forget 2012.The only thing he'ii be doing at the
White House is cleaning toilets.

Imelda   June 26th, 2009 1:47 am ET

Larry, w/ regards to the question to include or not the portion where Bruno-from the title of the same movie-interviews La Toya Jackson and tells her "you sound like Michael"-the answer is: it must NOT be removed from the movie. We humans and Michael Jackson fans might not like it-but I know he does not mind. And people should understand that he will love it and will have a blast laughing. I believe in souls still lingering around after we die so I know he wont mind. I believe he encourages us to tolerate the movie and life-as life. I hope he comes back as the same person he was: with a big heart & incomprehensible talent but w/ a more stronger will not to be used.

Imelda   June 26th, 2009 1:48 am ET

Oops! I submitted a comment not about Michael Jackson. Sorry!

Andy A Renema   June 26th, 2009 9:49 am ET

Dear Larry ,we watch your show faithfull. My request is could I get a print out, regards the wednesday June 24 interview about Gov mark Sanford, the question you ask ,to the panel.

Sincerly Andy a Renema. P.S Hope to hear from you, thank you.

janette   June 28th, 2009 2:07 am ET

Hey Elmer you are so funny! Well so much for contrition.....
Mrs. Sanford revealed her husband made several requests
to visit the "other woman"AFTER he was found out now
how stupid is that! He sounds pretty damn dumb to me.
The boy needs a shrink.

valerie   June 28th, 2009 11:34 pm ET

Kevin what in the world are you talking about? You make no sense what so ever. What most people on here are saying is that the Republicans take pride in calling themselves conservatives, and yet they are the furthest from that. At least Democrats don't pretend to be these moral standing, religouse fanatics who live by the law, but really don't. The republican party is a joke to me and always have been. They only care about themselves and the rich.

Stephen Webb   June 29th, 2009 1:24 am ET

Phoebe, you are a smart woman! I too privately mourn...and I am a man! I'm not gay, but two men tend to think alike, and ditto for two women! I know I want to save for the future, while my wife wants to live it up now! I try to explain that we won't be able to work when we're old, so now is the time to accumulate our wealth. She on the other hand, says we'll be too old to enjoy ourselves if we wait! I think we should divorce so she can live it up and I can glide into a comfortable retirement!

Damon Danner   July 18th, 2009 6:35 pm ET

so, an American general says we can't eradicate the poppy plants in afghanistan cause the farmers will be angry. LOL! Why don't we just throw down some money and pay them NOT to farm like we do here in the U.S. It would be much cheaper...I'm sure the Taliban doesn't pay em' that much being that far down on the drug trade money line. They don't have to farm and they still make double what the terrorists are paying them.
