Editorial: It’s increasingly evident that Obama should resign

Posted: 02:18 PM ET

Ted Rall is a columnist for Universal Press Syndicate via State Journal-Register

art.obama.ahead.giMIAMI — We expected broken promises. But the gap between the soaring expectations that accompanied Barack Obama’s inauguration and his wretched performance is the broadest such chasm in recent historical memory. This guy makes Bill Clinton look like a paragon of integrity and follow-through.

From health care to torture to the economy to war, Obama has reneged on pledges real and implied. So timid and so owned is he that he trembles in fear of offending, of all things, the government of Turkey. Obama has officially reneged on his campaign promise to acknowledge the Armenian genocide. When a president doesn’t have the nerve to annoy the Turks, why does he bother to show up for work in the morning?

Obama is useless. Worse than that, he’s dangerous. Which is why, if he has any patriotism left after the thousands of meetings he has sat through with corporate contributors, blood-sucking lobbyists and corrupt politicians, he ought to step down now — before he drags us further into the abyss.

Good "Railin" Ted, Where were you during the Bush Administration?Personally, I think we could put all the Democrats and all the Republicans in a bag along with some flour-shake well under totally obscure as to which party they belong to and have each write their own personal views on the Constitution and Laws that govern the Country and everyone of them would ask-What Constitution? What laws? Where is my staff so they can answer tough questions like this?
Not to hurt your feelings but when our twin towers were attacked on 911 and President Bush announced a pre-emptive strike on Iraq in response-I thought that he had gone totally nuts! For 8 solid years after that, he did absolutely nothing to change my opinion!

Shirley Thomason   May 30th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

No thank you on the negative comment on Obama. If they can do better I like to see them try. He had a mammoth job and has excelled on all he has done so far, which has been, in my opinon, a lot. Afterall, what do you expect? I did not see him with a magic wan and he hasn't performed any miracles yet. He is only human and an intelligent one at that. The health care plan will come. Trust me.

Jay   May 30th, 2009 6:09 pm ET

Ted you must have been hiding under a rock, Obama didn't make our health care premiums unaffordable, nor did he send all of our jobs to China. Ted maybe you should resign.

John, San Antonio, TX   May 30th, 2009 7:54 pm ET

What a Crock! What we have is a president who is intelligent enough and well grounded enough that now he is in office and has access to the facts of life all presidents must face, he is willing to make adjustments to his points of view in keeping with reality. Not so easy to simply close GITMO. Not so easy to deal directly with the North Koreans, Iranians, Venezualens, etc. In my humble opinion, he is doing exactly what he must do and handling himself quite well. To call for his resignation is simply ridiculous.

Shirley Butler   May 30th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Good grief! Annoy the Turks? Why on earth would we want to do that? The GOP did enough to ruin our reputation and this country lost its faith in our intelligence to deal with foreign countries with any form of diplomacy. Is Obama perfect? I think he would be the first to tell us..he is not! What exactly do you expect him to do Ted? As he has stated, he would like to be fully briefed before he acts or speaks. I believe he has learned much more about the realities of our situation since taking the oath of office. I believe he is acting in our best interests. I believe in Obama. I believe Ted is melancholy for that old sentimental feeling that we had in the sinking pits of our stomachs while G.W. Bush was in office.... you are addicted to fear and loathing ... like other dysfunctional people...it's not enough to be cognizant of the dysfunction...it's thinking outside that box that is painful when we face change.
Obama...change we can believe in...have some faith man.

A Name   May 30th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

What we have is a president who still can't even prove that he was born in this country, which according to the Constitution, is a requirement. He's going to continue moving this country into a Socialist state, so kiss goodbye to the freedoms that your founding forefathers fought so hard for. Socialized medicine is great for the young and the healthy. But when you need more than minimal health care, it doesn't work. That's why Fidel goes to Spain for his treatments. That's why the Canadians come here for theirs. There seems to be no spending limit whatsoever. People just blindly follow this man, without real thought as to what is going on. This used to be a country that, while criticized by many, was a country that many people wanted to live in, and many people have moved to. Someday it wil be so unrecognizable, that Americans will want to move to another country. But who, I ask, will want us?

als   May 31st, 2009 2:24 am ET

Bush made us a socialist country. Pres Obama has only been in office for 135 days. This country was in the toilet anyway. Pres Obama is trying to get us out.

Dave of Detroit   May 31st, 2009 8:18 am ET

Mr. President-Under President Bush, the Country was run by the Industrial-Military complex comprised of The Carlylse Group, Behner Engineering, and Halliburton that proceeded with their own agenda after covering any backlash against the Saudi's for the 911 attack. Basically, the U.S. citizens had a President that led them down a "crooked path" to quote Bob Redford. Now we have a President that does not want to deal with any of the Country's problems-Illegal Immigrtion-give them Amnesty (Be a nice guy and stay popular), a National Healthcare program financed by a "hidden value" tax that can be changed at will and would put a European style 50 % tax burden on a Country that is up to its ears in credit card debt and had their pensions, savings, and 401 "k"s stolen by corporate thieves of Mega sized corporations that again you refuse to deal with as they make political contributions to our political parties. Instead, you take charge of a middle class Auto Industry and break it up and take more pension and layoff more workers and there is even a very nasty rumor circulating that after GM's bankruptcy, instead of importing Opels, they will be a major outlet for Chinese Imports.Believe me, your credibility as a tax reducer on the middle class, an enforcer of the Laws of the Nation, qand a strong President is starting to fade. It would be a very sad thing if the President who admired the Great Immancipator became the one who ut a great Nation under a bondage of Tax and debt that they could never get out of!

amb   May 31st, 2009 11:17 am ET

Not all countries love President Obama. I saw a picture when he was visiting Turkey and the signs the people were holding up said "Go Home Obama." His apologies to other countries while he was on his European tour make me feel shameful for his behavior. Does he not realize that the American people freed many of those countries while fighting for our own freedoms – World War I and II, especially? I really am offended by his statements and he doesn't represent me or countless of other people in our wonderful country. And he is leading our country down the wrong path and still blaming Bush.

Michael C. McHugh   May 31st, 2009 1:55 pm ET

This article was written by Daffy Duck. Why should he resign when he's going to be re-elected in 2012? And I'm willing to bet Mr. Rall here and now that he will be re-elected. Obama is going to go down in history as one of the best presidents and a political genius, who overcame immense problems.

Resign indeed! Mr. Rall is living on Fantasy Island, and you can tell him I said so.

Michael   May 31st, 2009 4:14 pm ET

He had a mammoth job and has excelled on all he has done so far, which has been, in my opinon, a lot. Afterall, what do you expect? I did not see him with a magic wan and he hasn’t performed any miracles yet. He is only human and an intelligent one at that.

Hey Shirley. So if those are your feelings, why do you criticize Bush so much. Wasnt he in the same situation. After all, he is only human! Not an easy job to excell in after 9/11! Stop being hypocritical. You cant make excuses for Obama when hes doing the same actions as Bush

Shirley Butler   May 31st, 2009 6:59 pm ET

What a blanket statement Michael....Obama is doing the same actions as Bush...SUCH AS? I referred to the GOP and GW Bush as that sinking feeling in the pit of the stomach... I don't have that feeling with Obama... I dare to say I doubt I ever will. Bush and the GOP had eight years... how can I be hypocritical when Obama hasn't even had six months? I think YOU are the hypocrite along with the rest of the conservatives who have a sudden case of amnesia. My point is... give the guy a chance and I did state I don't believe he is perfect but I do believe he is doing what he can to rearrange chairs on the ship that is rapidly going down called the GOP's mess. I refuse to blame Obama for the GOP and the corruption and greed this country knows is their true values.

Irene, TX   May 31st, 2009 8:58 pm ET

Life is no movie and America is drowning in the movie culture. Looks like for many everything from "knowledge" of world history to views to expectations come from movies. People who are so unhappy with President's actions and results apparently expected a happy ending in 2.5 hours. Just like in the movie... Too bad it does not work that way. We the people are all responsible for this mess. It will take us a long time to get out of it. My grave concern is that too many good things could be talked and twisted to death, and then another pointing finger will stick out. Take Gitmo, for example. Closing it is such a hot subject and a convenient one too. People just might forget who opened it.

Demond   June 1st, 2009 1:08 pm ET

This article is a piece of trash that I wouldnt wipe my a** with. Obama has been in office less than 6 months and the repubs are critizing him for not getting out of two wars, fixing the economy, fixing education, fixing health care, closing Gitmo, etc. etc. It took Bush, Chaney, Rumsfeld, and Rove 8 years to bring America to the lowest point since the Great Depression. We all know it is easier to create a mess than to clean it up. In case you dont spill a glass a water on your floor and compare the time it takes to spill and the time it takes to clean it up.

I am an American living in Germany and working on the Germany economy. Everyone here in germany who works are required to have health insurance. Employees pay 14.5 percent of their income and the employer are required to pay the rest. ( Europeans are not taxed 50 percent as someone wrote.)

Rose   June 1st, 2009 2:30 pm ET

Hey Ted Rall – You stated: why does Obama even both to show up at work in the morning. Answer: Because he's trying to clean up the enormous mess the Republicans left behind.

GW Bush set a record for most vacation days taken by any president in his first year in office. Bush didn't bother to show up to work much, he must have been too busy taking "Intro-to-the-Presidency-101" or "How to Destroy a Country in One Term or Less". What a stupid article.

Rose   June 1st, 2009 4:36 pm ET

Ted Rall's IGNORANCE of politics is SHOCKING re: his "when a president doesn't have the nerve to annoy the Turks. . ." (!!!) Turkey's importance to the US is even more pronounced now. Turkey is the only country in the region that can work effectively with virtually all of the others in the Middle East.

Turkey is influential in the Balkans, the Black Sea and the Caucasus. In this extremely important arc of countries where so much of US foreign policy is at stake, Turkey is a vital link for the US and its European allies in addressing common economic, security and political challenges. It also has a diplomatic and military relationship with Israel (a rare situation in the mid-east) especially to keep Syria in check.

Turkey is also the gateway for exports of oil and natural gas from the Caspian region and Iraq to Europe. Is has shares common borders with Iraq, Iran and Syria and is a "key US ally". Obama is handling this critical relationship with the required care that is owed to advance America's position – especially after all the damage done by the Bush Administration in the region.

Ted Rall needs to start reading history in its proper context and stop publishing ignorant editorials.

Rose   June 1st, 2009 6:23 pm ET

As reported on CNN's site today: Cheney admits that there was NO LINK between Saddam and 9/11. . . finally a morsel of truth.

Then why did the US start a war against Iraq? No Weapons of Mass Destruction found. Again, why did the US start a war against Iraq? Cheney stated that Saddam "supported" terrorists (?!) based on "intelligence" – the same sources that said there "were" WMD. Wrong across the board. Al-Qaeda was in Afghanistan and no Bin Laden caught in 8 years. I hope Cheney (and his ilk) have lined their pocket sufficiently with the profits of their Halliburton, Carlyle Group etc contract$ in Iraq. How many dead for this false "cause"?

. . .and Rall's writing that "Obama" should resign – what a joke!

Ted   June 5th, 2009 8:43 am ET

Rose, give it to him, should ignorance be painful, Ted Rall would scream day and night.
Every empire on this earth went down, because they got lazy, complacent and lost the same moral values that made them powerful.
Looking at our nation, get rich easy in 30 days, watch TV 25 hours a day, clutch the bible in your left hand, but beat the hell out of your neighbor with your right one, does not match the values that made America strong. The Persian, Egyption, Greek, Roman empires lasted for many centuries, are we declining after less then a century of being on top?

Ameina Williams   June 11th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Oh by the way Ted- it's funny how you began with the Persians in regards to civilization- you can go back further to Kemet, they are the builders of the great civilization that we now call Egypt and, home to Arab community. Considering our president just spoke in Cairo, it would have been more significant if he could acknowledge that fact and current misnomer.

History- gotta love it,

Ameina

Ameina Williams   June 11th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Hi,

I would like to ask a few questions on our policies of torture, ethics and cooperation with international law and, also our constitutional right to be protected from threats both foreign and domestic.

1. If the enhanced techniques are illegal according to the Geneva Codes I, II, and II shouldn't any evidence, including the CIA tapes, be released into evidence, for the investigation of authorizing officials? Is it correct that the soldiers and commanding generals were acting under executive order and not liable of their actions?

2. If our policy is not to torture, then shouldn't the administration be held liable for crimes against humanity, murder and compromising homeland security by the enhancement of hate among radical groups?

3. If we have an ethics policy introduced by this administration, wouldn't the refusal to release information, which would indicate and hold accountable government officials for wrongful actions, be a direct contradiction to policy? Would this administration, then become an accessory to the crime by failure to act?

And finally,

4. How can world relations be rebuilt, if there is a continuance of evasion from accountability? If we are to ask other governments to be accountable for harboring terrorist, then we should we not be accountable to them and its citizens?

I ask that the administration consider these questions and its promise that it made to the world, and to reconsider its decision to hold back the pictures. I would also like to mention the CIA tapes, which everyone has seem to forgotten.

America has a long history of torture and, it is high time that we come clean and do what is just and right.

Thank you,

Ameina Williams

Michael Surber   June 15th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

Dear Larry,
I thought I would write to you to tell you the story this government and how they have put so much grief on me. This will be a quick story so you can get an ideal of all the wrong and all the pain this has caused me. My husband was a war hero in the Koran War and he was 100% service connected and his income from the Army was $7000.00 a month tax free. He was drawing so much because the Army preformed Experimental Surgery on him for frozen feet. He passed away Feb.16th 2006 because the VAMC would not give him the equipment for proper health care. They also didn't pay any of his life insurance they owed him. They also dropped my pay from $7000.00 to $1400.00 a month and me being a Widow of a 100% veteran I should continue to draw the full amount. My house payment is $1345.00 a month. I have written every official from the mayor to President Obama. Of course he never got to read any of the letters. I have my only son to fax them to the White House every day. My son and I took care of my husband for 14 years and now he can't get a job and we are about to lose the house and everything we own! This country is in the worst way and treats people like me awful. I have photos of the soars on my husband that show how much he suffered and they would make you sick to look at them. So to sum all this up, I am about to lose everything and no one will help me at all. All I get is lies and double talk. I have tried to refinance my home to try and buy some time in hopes my son can find a job and CitiMortgage want even do that. I thought President Obama would help and that is why I voted for him but my letters never make it to him. So I thought I would write to you and I pray to God you will at least get to read this! Maybe if you get to read this you will want to know the whole story how I have and am being treated. I just don't know how long I can hang on. So I thought I would reach out to you because you are God fearing women that have a lot of power and that really cares about people!
I cry every night because I am scared to death I will be put out on the street and this is all too much for me to handle.
Can you help me please?
Thank you and God Bless.
Sincerely,
Margaret Surber

LANCE-huffman tx.   June 16th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

ted you are a mooroon{ i spelled it that way. }maybe we should call bush and cheney back to finish what they started. just to tell you idid not feel safe until i heard bush was out of washington air space.
now you would think these idiots think they are still in power. its like a bunch of kids that if they don't get their own way they take their ball and go home to mommy.
the republicans honestly believe they{bush} has kept america safe from another attack. the only ones who have kept us safe is the soldiers and marines that believe in what they are doiing. i have never seem in my 62 years the way these men are treated.,even in nam they only spent 1 year in rotation unless they wanted to.
by the way have any of your family or relatives enlisted for the cause.
i tried to reenlist 6 months ago and was told i was to old. i didn't know there was a age limit on patriotism. as all these cable heads if any of them have gone there other than to put in an appearance.
pick up a gun and follow these brave combat engineers into the face of death every day.
so don't blame THATS PRESIDENT OBAMA TO YOU for taking so long in cleaning up bushes mess.

hopedawn   July 11th, 2009 11:42 pm ET

Ted Rall, it is increasingly evident that you should be more realistic. apparently you had unrealistic expectations of Obama. It took 8 years to destroy the country's economy and you are expecting it to bounce back in just a few months. Man, get real. building bridges and foundations that we can depend on later is a good place to start. and that is what Obama is doing.

stormylady   August 17th, 2009 11:12 pm ET

Wow, the president should resign? Yeah, from the wholesale backward ignorance and terror that was always following him from day one. His life and family are too credible for the neanderthal, beasts without souls that are just evil. Those beings need a liar that would send young Americans to war in harms way,for what? Americans never got any answers. He never even talked and when he did, he gave no reasons. Our soldiers are suffering, killed,. crippled.and some take their own lives. Go visit them at V.A. hospitals. See for yourself the damage. It wouldn't matter who was in the WH, no one can fix this mess in a year or two. Who was those fools following the president rallies with guns, one was blacck on t.v. Now, we know that had to be an agent. NO BLACK MAN CARRIES WEAPONS IN PUB;IC AND LIVE. Prayers for the President, no matter who he is. ALRIGHT.
