Vegas entertainer Danny Gans dies at 52

Posted: 12:22 PM ET

Note: Unless you were a regular on the Las Vegas strip, you may not be familiar with Danny Gans, but he was truly one-of-a-kind.  He was an impressionist, comedian, musician, singer, actor, athlete, dad, husband, and all-around good guy.  He left us too soon.  Danny Gans rarely gave interviews.  In what would be one of his last interviews, Danny sat down with Larry in March of this year.  Larry, his wife Shawn, and his family were friends with Danny Gans.  In fact, Shawn King was set to open for Danny on the night of his death.  This loss has touched both Larry and his wife deeply.  Danny Gans will be missed.  The entire Larry King Live team sends our thoughts and prayers to his wife, children, and family during this very difficult time.

(Danny Gans Interview full interview with Larry King)

(CNN) - Singer-impressionist-comedian Danny Gans died early Friday at his Las Vegas, Nevada, home, according to the hotel where he was based.

Danny Gans was one of Las Vegas' top entertainers and recently moved to the Encore Theatre.

Danny Gans was one of Las Vegas' top entertainers and recently moved to the Encore Theatre.

Gans, 52, was voted Las Vegas "Entertainer of the Year" for 11 of the 13 years he has been based there.

Hotel mogul Steve Wynn, who signed Gans to star in his Encore Theatre starting in February, said he was "devastated at the loss of our brilliant, talented and loving friend."

"One of the most unique human beings and entertainers in the world has been taken from us in an unexpected moment," Wynn said. "A profoundly tragic event that leaves us all sad and speechless."

Gans is survived by his wife Julie, two daughters and a son.

His long Vegas run began in 1996, when he gave up his one-man Broadway show and a tour schedule of 200 shows a year for a three-month gig at the Stratosphere Hotel.

He signed a nine-year deal to play in his own 1,250-seat theater at the Mirage Hotel starting in 2000. Some reports put the contract at $200 million.

When that expired early this year, Gans moved to the Encore Theatre, which sits between Wynn's Encore and the Wynn Las Vegas hotels.

The biography on his personal Web site said that out of college, Gans played minor league baseball for two years, until a career-ending injury.

He then turned to entertainment, traveling for 15 years before landing in Vegas.

We just got back from seeing Danny Gans in Las Vegas in April, 2009.
We raved about him during his show, raved about him to our friends in NY, and now am shocked at the news that he has passed. He made our trip in Vegas--a Vegas style act that could not be duplicated anywhere else. And, his act included how much he adored his family....and, we are all about family. Please tell Larry King that we are so happy that he has honored Danny Gans tonight. And, please let his family know-we send our prayers and also send the knowledge that he made a phenomenal impact on all of our lives.
All our love, Mark and Rhonda

Saw Danny once–was sooo impressed. Was trying to get back to Las Vegas to see him again. What a loss of talent, family man... a true icon of work ethic and family values. So sorry tonight.

Laurie Morgenthal   May 2nd, 2009 12:29 am ET

I worked with Danny doing stage monitors for him during his latter corporate entertaining years and at the Coast Playhouse in Los Angeles just before his stint on Broadway. There were several more shows in Vegas and then he was off and running at the Stratosphere permanently.

Danny and I used to play catch (baseball) in set dining rooms ready for the evening crowd and it always worried me that he trusted my arm so well. We had a blast and it calmed him down before shows. Ever the quintessential performer, each appearance was extremely important to him and he always made sure that people enjoyed what he was doing.

He was the most Christian person I've ever known and generally walked his talk in life. I cannot tell you how dark the hole in my heart is at the loss of one so vibrant, loving, loved, intelligent, giving and on top of this world Danny was. He's the very last person on earth whom I'd expect to be wishing for Restfulness and Peace.

My prayers and condolences to Julie and the children; to all the children whose lives he impacted through ParTee ForeKids and those he'd yet to; and to all of the people whose lives he touched if but for one evening. Larry is right, Danny was one of the greatest entertainers of our time.

Michele Richardson   May 2nd, 2009 1:13 am ET

Saw one of his last shows at the Mirage and it was fabulous, but when he was on Larry King, I kept noticing the bulging vein in his temple...I hope he didn't have an annurism.

Timp   May 2nd, 2009 1:21 am ET

Dear Larry:

I am so sorry for your loss….Danny was….well, The Best. I had the honor of working with Donny Osmond as a Producer; many years ago at a local, and very small PBS station in Provo. Donny was more than a gentleman, he was a kind and generous guest; which in our house, was rare.

With the humble statement of Donnie and the impact that Danny Gans had on a Janitor in Vegas; we really get a photo op of what Danny Gans was to everyone in Vegas, humble, real, and a great talent which we have lost too early.

My greatest sympathies to you and your family.

With Love,
From Provo, Utah
Thanks, Larry for sitting in the stands for the Timpview Thunderbirds.

Please call on me if there is anything I can do.

Best.

Jane Wilson
Provo, Ut.

Timp   May 2nd, 2009 1:28 am ET

I forgot to ask if there is a Trust set up for Danny's family.

I would like to spearhead efforts in Utah.

Warmest Regards,

Jane Wilson

Dear Friends,

Today, while talking on the phone with my daughter, I happened to notice on the news' crawl that Danny Gans had passed away.

I was immediately shocked and saddened and told her. Both she and I went to our respective computers and over the phone line read to each other the information we found regarding his death. My sister, sent me a text with the sad message, "Danny Gans has died."

In 1997, my parents, Gordon and Doris saw Danny Gans at the Stratosphere in Las Vegas. My dad soon became one of Danny's best PR people an aspiring entertainer could have. He told everyone who would listen that they needed to see this multi-talented individual. He purchased Danny's VHS and had all of us watch it several times. At that point in my dad's life, he and my mom visited Las Vegas quite often, and of course took everyone to see Danny Gans.

Danny Gans moved over to the Rio in '98, I think it was, because that's the year my husband, daughter, and I saw his show. Luckily for us, my dad knew someone at the Rio and as a result, we had "ringside seats" for the show in a venue that allowed us to be within two or three yards from him. The three of us loved Danny's energy, singing, impressions . . . we were soon telling everyone that if in Las Vegas be sure to see Danny Gans.

Danny Gans was much more than his being named Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year 11 times as a singer/impressionist . . .

He was a devout Christian; dedicated, loving family man; generous person involved in numerous philanthropic causes. One of the stories he shared at his shows was the fact that when he was doing a One Man Show on Broadway his daughter had drawn a photo of their family. Up in the sky in an airplane was Danny. Then and there he knew he needed to be home, thus he moved his family to Henderson, LV and as a result he did not have to travel in order to support his family.

His Vegas show was the kind that inspired, uplifted, and made you walk away ever so grateful that you had the opportunity to have experienced his wonderful gift of entertaining.

He epitomized how I wish everyone's lives can be . . . loving God, surrounded by loving family, having numerous caring friends, helping others . . . having this in his life with a career he loved in entertaining others.

I had hoped to see him again . . . his show being on one of those lists of things I want to do again . . . and never did I think that would be taken away . . . with his passing at the young age of 52.

God bless him and keep him . . . condolences to his family, friends, and those who had the joy of being part of his life even if it was only for one very, very incredibly great Las Vegas show.

For people to say that the interpretation of the bible that reference marriage is relative to the reader is absolutly ridiculous! It clearly states in Leviticus chapter 18:

"Never have sexual intercourse with a man as with a woman. "

Unless the meaning of " never" has changed, God said tha it should not happen. Period!

Who are we to interpret the bible in an attempt to jusify ones personal and sexual needs?

Nick   May 2nd, 2009 5:53 am ET

I am so saddened by the loss of this incredible talent. This void will not be replaced. Just an amazing, sad day. So young, talented and kind...

Susan Brimmage   May 2nd, 2009 6:00 am ET

Such a shocking announcement. Las Vegas has lost a legend.

p peters   May 2nd, 2009 6:41 am ET

Danny Gans must have been one of the few people in the world who were able to use more than 10% of their brain? Perhaps, much more than 50%?

I am sorry that I was never able to attend His show in Vegas...

David Lane in Georgia   May 2nd, 2009 6:58 am ET

A friend told me DO NOT go to Las Vegas without seeing Danny Ganns. If you dont have tickets, dont go to Vegas. Faye and I saw him
at the Mirage in the 90's. He was the best performer of all time. He will never be replaced. Our prayers go out to his wife and children. A sad time for everyone.

Helen Dixon   May 2nd, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Danny Gans, like Elvis, Glenn Gould, Judy Garland, Heath Ledger, Bernie Mac and many others that "gave their all" every time they ever performed, all seemed to "flame out" just like the magnificent falling meteors, or the comets that we see shoot across a summer night's sky. And like those gorgeous marvels speeding in the Heavens, when we look up and catch a view of them, for just a moment; we know that they will flame and seem to burn out just from the miraculous wonder of their power and beauty!

Dear Danny, and the other angels that went before him, were perhaps just too talented, too great, too brilliant and bright to last until they grew old. But what a miracle they were while they were among us! Danny was such a gift, so loved and appreciated by so many, and will be missed! Bless him for the giving of himself so extraordinarily, generously, and unselfishly to his family, friends, and the fans that all adored him for it! He gave his all, every time! Now, Rest In Peace, Dear Danny, your work is here is done.

GODSPEED, Danny Boy, GODSPEED!

Junie Reid   May 2nd, 2009 6:48 pm ET

Very sad that Danny Gans is gone from us so soon. His loss reminds us lfe is short and to reflect "what is man"? We are like a flower which bloom today and wither tomorrow. We are nothing. With all the riches and fame we all will come to the end of our road.
My thaughts are with his family and freinds.

Peace
Overcome fears with courage

PAUL DOBBINS   May 4th, 2009 12:22 am ET

Oh Danny boy the pipes the pipes are calling. Had never been to Vegas until September of 2007 and since then have made four trips, on my second trip i had the pleasure of staying at the Mirage and saw the Danny Gans show before it closed. Words cannot describe what an amazing talent this man was and i doubt that Las Vegas will ever see an entertainter as talented as Danny i just wish that more of the country and the world had seen him perform. I was scheduled to see his show in mid-May at the Encore Theatre and will still make the trip. Sin City will not be the same without Mr. Vegas. GODSPEED DANNY GANS you are truly one of a kind.

Doreen Davidson   May 4th, 2009 1:19 am ET

My brother, Michael and sister in law , Sandi told me about
seeing Danny Gans at the Mirage and loved the show. I was fortunate to see his show. I hope Larry King can rebroadcast his interview on CNN
Live of Danny. If there is a video of Danny Gan's act at Encore, I hope CNN can show it on Larry King Live in the near future.
With the help of Steve Wynn and Larry King, i hope there is plans
to create a DVD of Danny Gans's act at the Encore that people can purchase where all proceeds go to Danny Gan's family.
Hopefully, there can be a place at the Wynn Hotel, where people can come, see the video in person, and keep his memory alive.
Our hearts go out to his wife and children.

Nick Pelino   May 4th, 2009 3:34 am ET

My prayers are with Danny's family. The lights of Vegas glow a little dimmer with this loss.

sophia from Barbados   May 4th, 2009 3:48 am ET

Michelle Obama is strong and beautiful; with a head for fashion.
may god bless your family.

Doreen Davidson   May 4th, 2009 6:23 am ET

To Larry King and Steve Wynn,
As a tribute to Danny, and because he gave so much to the entertainment industry in Las Vegas, why not have "Danny Gans"
slot machines in the Mirage Hotel and the Wynn Hotel and in other casinos, where a percentage from the proceeds of those slot machines will go to Danny Gan's Favorite Charity, and to his family?
You will be surprised, that even in these tough economic times,
people who come to Las Vegas will want to play the Danny Gans Slot Machines.
This would also be a great idea for the Millions of fans of Siegfried and Roy. Have slot machines at the Mirage Hotel with their image or pictures of the White Tiger. A percentage of the proceeds from those slot machines will live on helping the white Tiger, going to Seigfried and Roy's favorite charity.

pattie colavito   May 4th, 2009 8:13 am ET

very sad about the passing of danny gans – a full dvd of his show should be made in memory of him for those who never saw his show and proceeds go to his charity/family. i have seen him 3 times and this august would have been my 4 time. hope larry king does a special on him as he was truly a gifted man who made us laugh and now has made us cry

Dodie ~ Irvine California   May 4th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

Danny Gans' death is a tragic loss to the entertainment world. He was not only a fabulous entertainer, I understand he was also an intelligent and very kind person. My condolences to his family and friends.
