Tina Brown – Michelle Obama fit for a Queen

Posted: 08:35 AM ET

by Tina Brown, Editor-in-Chief and Founder of thedailybeast.com – Tina was on LKL last night talking about the Obama's trip and here are her thoughts!

The excitement British women feel about the arrival of Michelle Obama in London for the G-20 summit is spiked with awe. She’s so big-time. So self-confident. So devoid of rainy, British diffidence. In a country where most political wives and female members of Parliament are the stylistic equivalent of a tufted ottoman, Michelle’s kind of striding self-assurance, glamour, and broad demographic appeal feels thrillingly 21st-century. The fact that she's African American adds an inspirational magic.

It was smart of France’s ravishing first lady, Carla Bruni, to let her husband go to the conference without her. The second Madame Sarkozy was a big wow when she visited London last March, but she’s a shrewd enough PR hand to know she would suffer in comparison to the first and only Mrs. Obama. Carla is old news next to Michelle. Sure, she’s more beautiful in the cover-girl sense—looking good is her profession, after all—but an Italian heiress who strums the guitar and made a predatory move on France’s reigning little Napoleon isn’t the best poster girl for the scariest economic downturn since the 1930s.

The Brits went off Carla almost as soon as she was back in Paris. That fake-demure little Dior suit she wore to lunch with Queen Elizabeth seemed in retrospect like the kind of get-up a reformed hooker might wear to meet her latest CEO for lunch at the Savoy.

One of the many appeal points of Michelle to the Brits is that her casual elegance feels as if it came out of her own closet on her own salary. The clean lines of Mrs. Obama’s jewel-colored shift dresses, skinny cardigans, and ballet flats have that effortless air that always gets high marks in dress-down Britain, where “she’s trying too hard” is the ultimate putdown.

Dear Larry,
The words SIMPLY DIVINE only ever came from HEAVEN.
Larry, I'm fitting America up for some major SUCCESS stories. The Obamas are today part of those Success stories. You know how Heaven works Larry.
SUCCESS = EFFORT
HEAVEN'S SUCCESS = HEAVEN'S EFFORT.
SUCCESS COMES VERY SOON.
HEAVEN'S SUCCESS COMES VERY SOON.
Have a really nice day America

"""IF""" lou Dudd traveled outside the USA would he wear that flag pin; or slap Canadians flag on his luggage?
Democracy did NOT begin in America. It was a movement FOR the people against the Privileged. 'off with their heads' 'the red coats are coming' remember??>
It is the GOP who are saying 'let them eat cake' 'save the blue suits' only they use terms like 'free economy' 'socialism' 'small government'.
SURELY there is a system that allows for wealth without exploiting and ruining the masses!!!!???
[[[instead of 50% of the wealth in the hands of 5% of the Elite, what about 50% to 15%????]]]]]
America BEGAN as a redistribution of Power and Wealth. Nobody was screaming Socialism back then.
King Charles and Antoinette would have kept their heads if they had a group like the Republican Party protecting them. Lamebaugh, Dudds and chuckie Norris are ANTIthetical to Government for the People!!!
They are mouth pieces for the Corporate Elite.
They WANT 'in your face' government regulations for THEIR issues, like immigration, gay rights, abortion rights.
It FOOLS their followers, who are uneducated, into believing the the Elite can run the World.
LOOK AT WHERE IT GOT US!!!!
The ONLY way out of the economic crisis lies in the Free Trade movement.
The Pyramid Scheme, Ponzi 'free' 'capitalist' system relies on 3rd World exploitation, and the World is running out of 3rd world countries.
Unless America smartens up on on loan sharking and unrecoverable lending, INDIA will overtake the USA within 5 years!!!!

Why is Madonna's purposed adoption require so much air time? Could you not find a better story about adoptive children than Madonna"s intentions. Could we not discuss and or compare the adoptive process in African vs America, for example. Could we not discuss how children are cared for agencies in America vs. Aftrica? I think the story can be much deeper than what you discussed and felt that your show was for pure entertainment – hence little value.

Dear Larry: I think that this is a good thing for the British to have royalty like the Obama's in England. It would be like having Prince Charles in the United States.

Karthik Boominathan   April 1st, 2009 9:11 pm ET

I would say that this topic is not all that "big". Its redundant that the Media is comparing our first lady... the presidents wife.... to the the queen. We are America and we have our presidency and they are Great Britan with their Royal Family. But my say to this topic is that she would make a fair queen, but not the one the people of Britan need.

Sheepdog   April 1st, 2009 9:26 pm ET

If you concentrate enough on the stylish couple, perhaps we will forget that the president is leading rapidly down the path to socialism or at best a European style social democracy. How questionable do our economic policies have to be when the head of the European Union – not known for its conservative policies, believes that the Obama administration policies are leading us "straight to hell."

Boy.....larry, thank God that Michelle is black and not white.....Ha haa!

Why? Glad you asked.

If she were white, there would have been a lot more subtle and suggestive Budweiser ads plastered all over America suggesting that black men are out enjoying the company of white women while black women are left with her sad self alone and sitting at a table clutching a glass of alcohol for comfort....

Be advised, Michelle is only ONE of the many black women as beautiful, super mother, woman and wife, educated and NOT aggressive according to popular belief....Lol

My question is, why does the media always show as if MOST black men are with white women? Are there no white men with black women?

How many secretly lust after black women but fear what friends and family would say if they date one?

or

Maybe the next person or company who make such suggestions should ask who unashamedly throws whose self at who....ha haaaa

I love all the positive press Michelle is getting but I have to say the clothes she wears play second fiddle to the fact that she is an intelligent, sophisticated woman and to downplay her personal accomplishments for her outfit is chauvinistic at best. She is smarter than 98% of us after all.

Abdullah Muhammad   April 1st, 2009 9:38 pm ET

Its ashame that folks can't say anything positive about our President and First Lady, folks try to put aside your personal feelings and give these two wonderful people their due.We now have a real down to earth President and First Lady. They both have made an impression on the world like it or not.God bless them both for years to come, and keep these safe while their away.

Peace Whitley   April 1st, 2009 9:40 pm ET

The Obamas are a beautiful couple and they deserve the respect of all Americans; no matter what they are wearing. They represent "real" black people. The kind that don't change just because their status changes. I personally think that they are the people that they represent: a humble, good natured and down to earth couple who love their kids and their country..keep representing Obamas.

J. R. Ericastilla   April 1st, 2009 9:40 pm ET

Mr K,
Mrs Obama is a pedestrian woman who will clop around no matter what the silk. Judge her as Michelle not Lady D, Jackie O etc. Eric

margie   April 1st, 2009 9:51 pm ET

she may dress like a lady.. but, someone should fill her in on how to walk like a lady...and not a buffoon...

Sheepdog   April 1st, 2009 9:53 pm ET

Of course, they are beautiful – that fact is never in question. The appropriate question is "Are we judging them on the color of their skin, rather than the content of their character?" Looking at the cabinet choices and their attitude toward taxation – read tax problems – are they the persons of good character to lead the greatest nation on earth out of the current malaise in the economy. It erodes our confidence in the president when he fails to know that a host of nominees including the Treasury Secretary and Secretary of HEW did not pay requisite taxes. The rest of us would be facing serious consequences for such oversights.

Angelina Inniss   April 1st, 2009 10:39 pm ET

I am baffled by the fuss over whether President and First Lady Michele Obama would embarrass the US and perhaps trip over the Queen and Prince Phillip during their visit to Buckingham Place, maybe use the wrong fork at dinner! The President and First Lady are two highly, highly intelligent and well read individuals, I am sure that they are very much aware of which fork they should use for which dish. Have you guys forgotten the dumb cowboy you had for a President prior to this one!

With regards to the gift! Absolutely nothing wrong with it, another gift from another Head of State, The Queen will accept it graciously, thank them and put it aside with all the other thousands of gifts that she receives. The Obama's gave something cultured and something young and fresh, nothing wrong with it!

What Americans should be focusing on are the relationships and good will that they have lost over the last eight years and will be rebuilt from this visit, after the mess of the Bush administration.

Americans have always been touted as the country that everyone else in the world wanted to emulate and one wonders why? You focus so much on the trivial and materialistic things that it is not wonder you are in the mess that you are in today!

Give your President the credit he deserves and a chance to clean that mess up that has been handed over to him, let him do the work that he has been put there to do by the people that it really matters to.

Ellene   April 1st, 2009 10:53 pm ET

The Obamas they do look terrific!, and they seem like down to earth good people. Lets hope though the president of America can keep his promise, and he is ABLE to take America out of this mess, not by bailing out the car companies, and the banks, but the hard working people of his country. With their tax dollars...

Jessica   April 2nd, 2009 1:11 am ET

First lady Michelle Obama is bad to the bone. She's in a class all by herself and her style belongs to her. I am pleased to see her conduct herself with such elegence and grace. Every time I see her.........I always say........YOU GO GIRL............Michelle represents all positive woman. Black, white, latino,Indian so on and so on. 'm proud she is our First Lady...............................Continue to represent the US with such style, elegance and grace

Is there still a Chief of Protocol in the White House? If so – why weren't the Obamas forewarned about not touching the Queen. As an American who has traveled to Europe/Great Britain both for work and pleasure, I am a little embarassed. Before I traveled there, I read up on the various cultures so I would not leave an "Ugly American" imprint on anyone.
It was just a little thing and could have so easily have been avoided if Protocol were to have been discussed.
(I am still so ashamed of that noodnick Bush who thought he could actually rub the shoulders of a female colleague at a world leader conference!)

Hodge Alexandre   April 2nd, 2009 9:47 am ET

Gerry Stratico   April 2nd, 2009 1:47 pm ET

It is amazing to me that with all the problems that Americans are going through now, you spend air time on Michelle Obama, her arms, her wardrobe, a play-by-play of her touching the queen. Do you honestly think we want to hear this with Americans out of work, worry everywhere for them and their children. How about delving into the cost of this trip for the Obamas. They certainly did not need all the people (and teleprompters) that accompanied them. Who needs 6 assistants by their side – oh, MIchele Obama does – and do not forget the personal chef. Oh, how grandiose, and we, of course, as taxpayers, foot the bill. Your program along with other CNN anchors need to get over this adulation and start saying it like it is. Where is your reporting of Acorn with its corruption, dishonesty, and how they got this guy in office? Where is the reporting of Obama's aunt staying in the U.S. even though she is an illegal? You let Obama slide on everything. Guess what? He is not a god, we alll know how he got to the white house, and it disgusts me to see how you and your anchors fawn over him and his wife. How about fawning over the American people and what they should have.

Rose   April 2nd, 2009 4:15 pm ET

Michelle Obama is wonderful. A self-made educated woman and an asset to America. She is not the daughter of a rich man, she did not marry a rich man – unlike many past First Ladies. She is not a famous model (unlike French first lady Carla Bruni whose main-claim-to-fame is her looks via "lucky" DNA).

She presents herself in a dignified manner and her intelligence comes through. She dresses with respect and consideration to the financial situation that American's are facing. Who really cares about superficialities such as what color she wore or how she walks or how she stood etc. That's just plain silly.
